Lawsuit to stop 16-story building challenges project’s zoning; JPNA raising funds for legal costs

Lawsuit to stop planned 16-story building in Jefferson Park was discussed at the Jefferson Park Neighborhood Association meeting. The lawsuit claims that the building and its parking garage would worsen traffic near the CTA Terminal. The building would be located on what is essentially a side street, according to the lawsuit.
Alderman Arena has said that more density is needed in the area to help revitalize the business district. The JPNA has a general policy of opposing up-zonings.

Doorbell Ringing Near Milwuakee and Kildare

Has anyone's doorbells been ringing from 1 am to for 4 am lately? My family and I are quite worried about this incident. There was no banging of doors, but the doorbells were just at it.

  • Has this happened more than once? Do you have a wireless doorbell? After I installed one I bought at Home Depot, my doorbell would ring but there’d be no one on my porch. I was perplexed for months until I noticed that every time this happened there was someone at the door on my neighbor’s porch across the street. Their wireless doorbell was apparently set to the same frequency so whenever someone pushed their doorbell, it rang at my house.

  • Same here with the wireless doorbell. We had to finally get rid of ours, after we realized it rang everytime there was someone at the door of the house across the street from us. Hope that is all it is for you. If not, I would be installing cameras.

Read All About It! FAiR Newsletter February 2018 is Out - Jet Noise and Health

Greetings My Neighbors,

Sharing this with you from the Fair Allocation in Runways (FAiR) Coalition. The lead story is about the impact of airplane noise on and in our lives.

JET NOISE AND HEALTH

Chicago and suburban residents under the O’Hare flight paths currently experience jet noise in the range of 65 - 110 decibels on a 24/7 basis. Those living immediately adjacent to the boundary of O’Hare, like the residents of Park Ridge, Bensenville, and the 41st Ward, experience noise levels close to 120 decibels (the sound at which aircraft take off).

    Merchandising 101 – Sale Pricing

Let’s say you own a store and receive some new clothing. You determine that the best price for them is $40 so of course you put them on the rack priced at $100 and sell none.

A week later you mark them down 20% to $80 and sell a few.

At the end of the month it is 33% off and sales start to pick up.

2 weeks later it is marked at half off and for $50 they really start flying out of the store.
Finally they are on clearance at 60% off and you sell the rest at the $40 price you really wanted to sell them at.

Across town a similar store receives the same blouses and puts them on the rack for $40. 6 months later almost none are sold and they are returned to the supplier or trashed.

Fantasy? Nope, in the 1990’s Sears came up with the “Everyday Low Pricing” deal and priced everything in the store at the base price which meant that there were no longer any sales. The result was a disaster. Fortunately Sears was huge at the time so it weathered the storm and went back to sale pricing.

About 4 years ago JC Penny hired Ron Johnson who had the same idea to end sales and lower prices and almost drove the company into bankruptcy. It is still trying to recover.

So if you are in the low end (WalMart, Ross) then low prices will work. But if you are in the middle to high end then it will kill you. No one calls their friend and say, “I paid full price for it.” They want to brag that they are real shoppers and got a great deal. They do not buy things for $40 they buy things for 60% off, even if it is the same amount.

@DianeW I of retail was in Penneys today and in the Menswear Dept. a lot of winter coats and such are 60% to 70% off of the retail price. Now at this point in the season is the time to buy winter coats, you will get a much better price than in September!

That simply is not true the spot in front of your home is yours because if it is then I am getting pushed around my neighbor parks there all the time and I actually park in front of his home. I have never heard that before. I will have to call 311 and ask them that one and I know they are going to more than likely think it’s a prank call. I wish it would be true though that would be awesome I would get a sign with my name on it how great that would be (Apples parking only all others will be towed or ticketed) 👍🏽🤪👍🏽

  • As for my work they do shovel the lot however it is a small lot and if maintence is gone for the day if I stay later I have had to shovel it out when it has been a heavy snowfall .... I should put a “dib” in that spot

Why is Dibs a thing ?

Why is it so that is now an unwritten rule that people can put their furniture to reserve public property ? We all know that we can't all do that, and it's always the same people, the folks that feel like they are entitled to things. Why is it so that is now an unwritten rule that people can put their furniture to reserve public property ? We all know that we can't all do that, and it's always the same people, the folks that feel like they are entitled to things. We got like 1 foot of snow, nobody has shoveled the street, all the spots are their due to cars that were there during the snowfall, yet immediately 5-6 spots had furniture on them.
It amazes me that some people think that only because they put a chair on the street I will park a block away from my house when I get back from work. This might've been an OK practice back in the day when most people had decent values, but nowadays you only get the douche-bags in society abuse these thoughtless, unwritten rules.
I don't understand why the city can't start enforcing the actual regulations and toss furniture off public property and issue litter tickets to people that won't comply.
And yes, I can kinda understand it if we got the same blizzard as several years ago, but for 1 foot of snow...seriously ? Just park like the rest of your neighbors and if you have to shovel for 5 min - big deal...

No mail since December 28th?

Anyone noted that there has been no mail delivery in the Jefferson Park area since Dec 28th? I am told that the post office is very short of help. I offered to pick up my mail and was told it would be delivered yesterday. That didn't happen. Wonder how mail can be retrieved at this point.. If you are having a problem, best to contact MIKE QUIGLY at 773-267-5926. You can also contact the post office at 708-667-4696 but they are not very helpful and rather rude.

Frequent "no-hitters" on the 5800 block of West Wilson. Example: December 26. No delivery yesterday Feb 12 (NO, Lincoln Bday is not a Federal / Postal holiday). Other dates too. The next day piles may be delivered. Online complaining via USPS worthless. Likewise, do not attempt to telephone the Lawrence Ave Post Office. No one answers and some numbers posted online are out of service. In person complaints will result in the standard evasions. When I requested a repair of an out of service letterbox the postmaster gave me a scrap of paper with a phone number on it. Typical bureaucratic attitude of 'its not my job' or "not my department". Trying to lament the neoliberal imperative to privatization, but poor service like the USPS seems to justify the trend....

Dibs

Well here's the thing I am 65 shoveled out my spot and have one car not 5 or 6 like many so I think it only fair the city does give you a warning and th garbage men will pick up stuff on the street after a resonable amount of time I do have a garage but no way I could get through the alley I would rather be in the garage so I did not also have to clean off my car plus I ran my snow blower down my whole block so my parking spot is my reward

  • i know what you mean about the alley, the ruts are so bad people are always getting stuck, plus there is no where to put the snow, esp. if you are in the middle of the block.
You think the city could eventually go plow thru the alley in snow storms over 8".

  • Brushman4 Serving the best since "53"

The city says no plowing of alleys, because doing so would collapse garage doors! Just hire someone with a backhoe and open trailer and have them haul the snow out of there.

Mystery Book Club (?)

Hi
Is anyone interested in a Mystery Book Club? We could meet every month or every six weeks. And we could, if possible, meet at local facilities like Jefferson Park Library, coffee shops, it’ll help create revenue for that business and allow us to meet our local business owners and neighbors. I’ll look into more if there are those of you who would like to do this.
I wanted to know if there is interest before I pursue details. No interest, no problem.
Thanks. I’ll be checking.

Fat Tuesday Paczki

There's good and not so good, depending on the source. Where's your favorite Paczki from?
We got Paczki from Jewel (Central/Lawrence), Forest View Bakery (6454 N Milwaukee), and Ideal Pastry (4655 N. Milwaukee). Those from Jewel were bad--really bad; the sticker on them says "Clyde's Donuts." Forest View Bakery's Paczki are melt-in-your-mouth delights! Ideal Pastry's Paczki is also pretty good, and slightly doughy.

Catalytic Converter Theft

On Friday morning, Feb. 2 at approximately 10:30a, I witnessed a catalytic converter theft but may have foiled it. It happened in front of 4955 N. Merrimac. I thought something just wasn't right. On Friday morning, Feb. 2 at approximately 10:30a, I witnessed a catalytic converter theft but may have foiled it. It happened in front of 4955 N. Merrimac. I thought something just wasn't right. The perps knew I was onto them so they jumped in their car and took off. I pulled a Steve McQueen and put my car in reverse to chase them but they were too quick. I telephoned 911 and also stopped at the 16th District station to report it.

This afternoon on my way to the gym I saw a squad car pull over on Carmen just west of Nagle. I too pulled over and rolled down my window. As it turns out, a cop in the neighborhood has been looking for this car. It's a gray 4-door Infiniti G or Q series sedan with Michigan plates. They think they're amateurs because they were working in the morning and this kind of crime happens in the afternoon or night. Also the fact that Friday was a no school day so most everyone(witnesses) would be home. They're going to pull film from the CVS cameras--Higgins & Merrimac/Mobile--to see if they can see the car and the Michigan plate number.

  • As someone who lives close to there THANK YOU for being aware and reporting what’s going on!

  • I was the beneficiary of a foiled catalytic converter theft back in July. A good Samaritan foiled it and posted on Ward 41 Watch Facebook page complete with a picture of a yellow Camaro with temp plates.

    Stay alert folks...NW Side strong!!!

  • I live about 2 blocks away from where that occurred. My neighbors and I have been keeping an eye for just anything unusual that happens in our block.
About 2 months ago my neighbors house got broken in to and about 2 weeks ago my Car got broken into.
Both accidents I caught on my surveillance cameras but no luck on getting license plates.
Thank you for keeping an eye on our neighborhood.

Did you noticed what color car it was?
