Amid Affordable Housing Dispute, Conservatives Seek a Home in Chicago - ProPublica
When news broke last week that a proposed affordable housing development on Chicago's Northwest Side had likely been put on hold, Ammie Kessem, a Republican candidate for state representative, vowed on Facebook that it wasn't the end of the story. Democrats, Kessem wrote, would pay for pushing the plan - including 45th Ward Ald.

Ald. Arena pledges to bring 50 CHA units to the ward
by BRIAN NADIG Alderman John Arena (45th) has pledged to bring 50 Chicago Housing Authority-sponsored apartments to the 45th Ward by the end of his term in the spring of 2019. Arena and six other aldermen recently signed the pledge as part of an effort that they say will help end segregation on the North and Northwest Side.

LaBagh Woods offers great recreational, aesthetic and ecological value to the people of Chicago, and serves as a habitat for migratory birds and diverse wildlife. The privately owned, wooded property at 4357 W Bryn Mawr is a seamless addition to the forest preserve and contributes to the quality of life and property values that the families of Sauganash and neighboring communities enjoy.

We were dismayed to learn that in spite of strong community opposition, the City Council voted to rezone this land from POS-1 (Regional or Community Park) to RS-1. This will allow developers to strip this land of its trees and wildlife in order to construct single family homes.

We believe that to divest the people of Chicago of even a single parcel of forested land should be as unthinkable as privatizing a stretch of the lakefront. The parcel in question, though privately owned, provides great value to the community and the region as undeveloped open space. We therefore ask that you sign this petition to express your concern and opposition to development at this location. We further ask that you reach out to your elected City and County officials to voice your opposition to the development, and urge them to work with the community and the owner of the parcel to reach an equitable compromise.

I am just trying to get rid of it without having to bag it for the garbage people, so feel free to come by and take it. I plan to put a sign up tonight, but as described above, if you drive west on Montrose, turn right on Narragansett, turn right on Sunnyside, then turn immediately right into the alley and drive down a bit, you will see the sod stacked up on the right right inside my fence. Take as much as you want, all of it if you can.

Mixed-income housing developer for 5150 Northwest Hwy reviews options after state denies tax credits

Subsidies, programs and promises have a cost. As those costs rise taxes are raised. When the net is widened, costs increase So taxes are raised. When the taxes and costs become too much to bear, people and companies cut back, move, or fold. Then meaningful economic development takes a hit which results in less incoming revenue. As things become "unaffordable" for those remaining, they leave or get in line for subsidies. Which of course reduces revenue and increases costs. So taxes are raised.....

    This is an unsustainable cycle....

  • PortageRules Love Portage Park!

Being unsustainable is built in to the Illinois constitution, so, why stop with this? Unsustainable is a word not in Illinois politicians vocabulary as long as the words "added/increased revenue/taxes exist. Sadly, a 5 yr old can see the math problem here and are honest enough to give an accurate answer.

Twelve-year-old Aoife Gallagher fights a debi...

Twelve-year-old Aoife Gallagher fights a debilitating disease called Leukodystrophy. Aoife's form of the disease is so rare, only 250 people worldwide have been diagnosed. This neurologically degenerative disease has no cure. Diagnosed more than 10 years ago, Aoife has lost the ability to walk and talk and depends on her parents and 10-year-old brother Fionn for her every need. After years of medical treatment, Aoife had a recent major setback that required intensive care treatment for more than three months. Aoife is a student at Disney II Magnet School on Chicago's Northwest side. Aoife's father, John Gallagher, hails from Crossmolina, CO. Mayo, Ireland. Her mother is Margaret McIntyre, and her brother Fionn plays for the Windy City Gales Irish youth football team for which John coaches. On top of the emotionally and physically intense years of medical procedures and extensive medications, this ordeal has resulted in a sizable financial burden for the family. A benefit to support this resilient family will be held on Sunday, June 3, from 3-8 pm at the Irish American Heritage Center, 4626 N. Knox. If you are interested in sponsoring the event, you can find a donation commitment form on my website at http://ward45.org/wp-content/uploads/Aoife-Gllagaher-Benefit-Sponsorship.pdf.

Groups tied to Illinois Policy Institute and talk show host Dan Proft back GOP candidates on city’s Northwest Side.(Excerpts):"Starting with the 2012 elections, some institute leaders began funding campaigns after a series of transactions involving other organizations and political action committees they formed, records show."

"The Illinois Opportunity Project, in turn, poured more than $1.7 million into political campaigns and committees across the state, according to election board records. "..."Some of the money from the Illinois Opportunity Project went to a pair of Northwest Side candidates for the Chicago City Council in 2015. John Garrido, a Chicago police officer running for alderman of the city’s 45th Ward, received $2,000, while Anthony Napolitano, a former police officer and firefighter vying to be 41st Ward alderman, got $3,000."..."In 2016, the Illinois Opportunity Project also loaned $325,000 to Liberty Principles, a political action committee founded and run by Proft. Liberty Principles spent more than $10.5 million in races across the state in 2015 and 2016, including about $118,000 backing Garrido. Proft didn’t respond to a request for comment. The 2015 results were mixed. In the 41st Ward, Napolitano upset an ally of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s. But for the second time in four years, Garrido lost to John Arena, a self-described progressive who received significant backing from unions and liberal donors."

5150 N Northwest Hwy proposal left off state housing authority agenda

Preliminary agenda for state board meeting on low-income housing tax credits does not include proposal for 5150 N Northwest Hwy. Barring any late changes to the agenda, it is not clear what impact the lack of tax credits would have on the feasibility of the housing proposal for this year. The developer, Full Circle Communities, could not be reached for comment. Tax credits are often required for affordable housing developments. One local housing group has questioned the neutrality of the state board. http://nadignewspapers.com/2018/05/15/5150-project-not-on-preliminary-agenda-for-low-income-housing-tax-credits/

Incident on Kennedy Early Sunday A.M.

Does anybody know what happened on the eastbound Kennedy I-90 Sunday morning around 6 a.m.?

It happened just east of the Austin Ave exit and it appeared that first responders had the Kennedy completely shut down. Thankfully I was able to exit at Austin Ave to avoid the gridlock but others were not so lucky.

  • I keep getting thumbs up for this post.

This is somewhat puzzling as I'm asking a question about a presumed incident on the Kennedy last Sunday morning.

    Does anyone know what happened???

5200 W. Roscoe

Noticed the construction going on inside this building of the corner of 5200 W Roscoe/Laramie. The ground level has framing going on front to back. Any ideas what they are doing?

  • Is framing going up inside the existing building or outside?

  • From what I seen that night in the dark, the framing is going on inside the first floor, front to back. Please note, I was inquiring if anyone had ideas what business establishment was coming. Or what they are building inside the place, not if there are permits. I'm not one to report people. I'm glad the building was purchased and work is being done instead of sitting abandoned.

Beware of Caldwell Central Auto 6301 N Central

We had our car towed here last Monday. It wasn’t until Friday we got the diagnosis of a timing belt & water pump for $2800. Since we had the timing belt changed 30,000 miles previously and the unprofessional way Pedro dealt with us we paid the $90 diagnostic fee and had it towed to Albany Auto.

They found it was the alternator at a fraction of the Caldwell Central price and we are happily driving again.

  • PennyPenguin Chillin' out on EB

should post it on yelp and contact Better Business Bureau

  • Bob

Wow -Another buyer beware scenario. I have many times been misquoted by shady auto mechanics. When they think you are an idiot, they will try anything to make you believe your auto needs repairs that are not legit. Glad you got out of there and thanks for the heads up!

  • $2800.00? I think $ 450.00 would be the cost for an alternator & belt, maybe $550.00. There’s a guy at Central & Sunnyside, an old looking gas station/garage. Sam has been there for maybe 20 years & always honest. Worth a visit.

Pros and Cons of North Mayfair?

Hi, everyone! Our family is considering buying a home in North Mayfair. It seems really lovely, quiet, safe, and has some great community involvement! What do you like or dislike about this neighborhood? Are people generally politically conservative or liberal? Is it diverse? Are there lots of little kids? We have a five-year-old who will be looking for playmates. Thanks in advance for sharing your experience!

  • North Mayfair is a great neighborhood. Depending on where in the neighborhood you are you can actually walk to the blue line at Montrose. It is a diverse neighborhood with many young families moving in. There are also residents who grew up here and that have opted to come back and raise their families in the neighborhood,

  • We have our share of crime, so don't think this is a crime free zone. There are no crime free zones in this city.
However, there are great people here and JP seems to be attracting more restaurants and shops. My neighbors are friendly and I'm grateful for them. 👍

Hope you enjoy the diaper cream, infant gloves and nasal aspirator you stole from my front door steps on Leland between Linder and Central (Saturday later afternoon). Hope karma bites you in the a&& for stealing items meant for a extremely congested 6 week old baby.

  • Sorry to hear that happened to you. Hope you were able to get the items you needed for the little one.

That's horrible I hope the baby gets well soon and you were able to get her some supplies.

North Branch Trail Alliance of Greater Chicago Awarded “Advocate of the Year” by the Active Transportation Alliance (ATA)

The North Branch Trail Alliance (NBTA) of Greater Chicago is excited to announce that it was awarded the “Advocate of the Year Award for 2017” by the Active Transportation Alliance (ATA), Chicagoland’s leading voice for biking, walking, and transit. Steve Simmons, ATA Trail Advocacy Manager presented the award and said, “We’re grateful to be working closely with NBTA to advance trail networks along the river. Trails strengthen economic development and provide users with lasting cultural experiences. NBTA has made a valuable contribution to trail development by hosting bike rides, partnering on workshops, and joining the Chicago River Trail Coalition.”

Jac Charlier, NBTA President said “For NBTA to receive this recognition of the local economic development work we are doing that’s helping our neighborhood downtowns from Albany Park to Mayfair, Forest Glen to Edgebrook, to Niles, Morton Grove, Glenview and beyond, speaks to the value of moving from mostly seeing bike trails for ‘health and hobby’ to understanding them as real economic drivers for our small businesses.” Charlier said that NBTA is currently seeking businesses as well as Chambers of Commerce interested in becoming NBTA 2018 Business Partners.

The next NBTA ride will be on Saturday, May 19 at 11:30 AM, with the theme “Icons of our Northwest Area.” More about NBTA at www.northbranchtrailalliance.com on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
