EB may be leaving, but we're all still here. Let's start an EveryBlock (or whatever) sub-reddit!

hey all. i'm equally bummed about losing everyblock. i've become used to all the great input, feedback and dissenting opinions...even the varied responses to trolls. they enrich my morning. :)

so why give it up? surely some of you know about reddit.com. we can create a sub-reddit just for us. if we ALL hopped over to a new sub-reddit, then we wouldn't have to lose a thing. we could retain our anonymity. all we need are some basic posting rules...

i haven't thought out the details, because i know we are all from different neighborhoods...but calling it chicago-northsiders or something comes to mind. there are already a couple of NWside sub-reddits, but they are vastly underused. we could at least just start one and see what happens.

your thoughts?

  • I wouldn't consider /r/ChicagoNWside vastly underused and I'm sure they'd welcome even more activity.

  • Thanks for this post. I really appreciate it. How do I sign up?

Planting by neighbor against my Brick Property needs tuckpointing

Hello

These property lines drive a Chicago homeowner crazy. I told my neighbor I will be doing some tuckpointing work on the west side of my property (on their yard side) later this summer. My chimney protrudes out approx 4 inches on that side which also coincides with MY property line. My neighbor then goes ahead and plants veggie plants directly against my building with chicken wire fencing obstructing where tuckpointing is needed. The Alderman has indicated that I would need to get a R/E attorney and apply for a temporary easement order with the CofC to gain access. How ridiculous is this. All because of some plants on MY property line.
Anyone have any suggestions, please give me a holler. Thanks in advance!

  • You should have a survey along with your property papers. That survey will give dimensions from your house to your property line.I would guess that the narrow strip of land next to your house where they planted is actually your property. I does not matter where the fence is .
A contractor will probably erect a scaffold to do the work. That can be done in such a way as to not disturb the plantings. Protection can be do so as to protect the plants from dust and debris.

Yes, they are on my property. I have a plat survey and it indicates that my property line is 11 5/8 inches out from the building. I'll use this if needed in the event the neighbor tries to justify his plants being placed there.

The building tuckpointing is needed at the bottom sections of the building, thus, the plants are obstructing the part that needs access on the lower part. I think there may be room if the contractor decides to pull the plants back with a strap of some kind to shift them forward away from the building without damaging them. This all depends on how cooperative the neighbor is. I have found they say one thing, then do something different. We shall see. Thanks for your comment!

Eugene Field(house) River Dumping

Hi Albany Park Neighbors,
On more than one occasion I have seen someone dump plastic bags with animal parts into the bridge passing over the river here. They simply get out of their GMC walk to the river bridge and throw in a bag of animal parts. This also has happened at Central Park. Has anyone else witnessed this and has anyone got a license plate number? I'm hoping to take information to the Alderman. Thanks for your help!

  • What they're doing is gross & wrong on many levels (what type of animal parts and obtained how, etc...?). Hope you can collect enough info to have them caught and stopped.

  • future alderman future alderman

i would call 311 today and the alderman tomorrow

  • lin ravenswood downsizer

Call 911. That is a crime to dump, anything, in the river.

Reckless driving

Out for a walk last night around 8:15pm, we saw two black sedans with temporary plates (the second car was an Audi) doing 45-50 mph down Ainslie between Elston and Pulaski. They blew right through all of the stop signs without slowing down. It was pretty terrifying; if anyone had been in their path, there would have been a collision. It happened so quickly we couldn't get photos are do anything.

It may have been a single occurrence but please be careful when out there, there are some real crazies around.

Did anyone lose a parakeet near Drake and Sunnyside in Albany Park?

  • Hello, are you sure it is a parakeet? I see a lot of miss labeled birds on sites.

Soon after a sedan (I think dark green) came speeding down the street and flew through the 4 way intersection. A man was in the front seat and a young child in the back. A few seconds later a black sedan came speeding down the through the intersection in hot pursuit of the first car. A young (teenage I am estimating) boy was standing up in the back with this torso out of the sunroof shooting at the car ahead of them. I witnessed about 6+ shots fired. Both cars turned onto Irving Park from Troy. I called the police and gave them the pertinent details I was able to witness. I wanted to post this to encourage others to be safe and on alert for gun related activity in the neighborhood. I am upset I was not able to get the license plate.

Cook County Towing/Avondale Collision - Open Meeting at City Hall

Neighbors - we've all complained now we must insist the City follow through! Please attend an open meeting at City Hall, 121 N LaSalle, room 805 on Thurs, Oct 5, 10 AM.

The purpose of this meeting is to address the numerous complaints of reckless driving, aggressive behavior, noise at all hours of the day and night, misuse of the lot at Keeler & Milwaukee in accordance with zoning, and overall "junkyard" state of the property occupied by these businesses.

Please attend. Please bring your neighbors. Please call the alderman's office, and more importantly 911 when you see issues happening in real time.

We deserve respectful neighbors in our community and these businesses are infringing on our safety.

  • To address the concerns and take steps towards being better neighbors, AC was advised that they needed to operate inside the scope of their business license. To address the concerns and take steps towards being better neighbors, AC was advised that they needed to operate inside the scope of their business license. Their working hours should not go past 6 p.m. They should provide their contract with CCT for review. They are only permitted 15 (possibly 16) spaces on their Milwaukee-facing lot. They should not load out or receive any cars on the Keeler side. Drops on the Milwaukee side must be on the property (street drops not allowed). Signage was required (and subsequently displayed) pertaining to driving cautiously and being quiet. Vendors are to use the Milwaukee-side entrance only to conduct business.

Per the owner of Avondale Collision, they used to but do not currently have a contract with Cook County Towing.

I call all this non-progress because the last meeting with Chicago Business Affairs and Consumer Protection it was deemed that AC provided all documentation and signage to maintain their business and continue to operate at Milwaukee and Keeler, and since then we've seen the number of cars in the lot continue to grow again, CCT continue to drop off cars after 6pm + AC being open beyond 6pm. The only "win" I've witnessed is that the CCT are less likely to idle next to my home, but, from the comments here and recent comments on Facebook, it sounds like they have just found new spots to and neighbors to disturb. Please keep calling 911 to report reckless driving, please keep telling the Aldermans this is unacceptable behavior from a neighbor.

  • No contract with CCT...what a joke, I’m going to snap a photo every chance I see a cct truck dropping a car off

Free Glucose Meter and Strips

Are there any Type 1 or Type 2 diabetics in need of a glucose meter and 500 strips? Another ridiculous Medicare regulation requires the provider to send these items along with Dexcom sensor supplies even though another brand is preferred. Medicare will not stop sending these supplies. I would like to pass them on since blood glucose testing is vital to good control. Call me 773-588-8872

Editorial: Cigarettes. Drunken driving. Next: Guns?

To most people, a drunken driver is a public menace to be jailed, not a mistake-prone tippler to be tolerated. There’s a stigma attached to DUI and cigarette smoking. Americans resent the preventable deaths they cause. Will Americans now decide that minimizing gun deaths should come next?

Gun control activism is risk to bottom line, gun maker says

The maker of Smith & Wesson firearms said gun control activism poses a risk to its business, according to a company filing.

American Outdoor Brand Corp., which on Wednesday reported a 25 percent decline in fiscal fourth-quarter revenue compared with last year, listed the "actions of social activists" as a risk factor in its annual report.

Shares fell as much as 12 percent Thursday in New York, the most intraday in six months, and were down 4.6% to $12.62 at 12:13 p.m. Rival gunmaker Sturm Ruger & Co. fell 4.8 percent to $57.45.

    Cigarettes. Drunken driving. Next: Guns?
One of the greatest public health triumphs of the last century impressively still gains momentum: Millions of Americans have quit smoking - and more will follow. Smoking among adults hit a record low in 2017 - to about 14 percent from nearly 16 percent a year earlier.

  • Sorry, one of the highest gun violent city’s. I am not here to argue with anyone. I am just saying we have bigger issues to tackle then worrying about law abiding citizens. That’s all. Have a good week everyone.

  • To J Sebek, No, I will not stop worrying about the inner city. All that garbage is moving our way, slowly but surely. You can't just bury your head in the sand and pretend that it does not effect you.
