We have a fighting chance of overriding Governor Rauner's veto of a bill that passed the General Assembly with bipartisan support — but it's going to take each of us speaking out to fight back against the gun lobby's dangerous agenda.

  • Tell me it isn't so. Some Illinois lawmakers want to give extra money to schools that replace armed security officers with unarmed social workers and behavior therapists. What could possibly go wrong? This is an indication of the wonky extremes to which the antigun faction is willing to go, and the name of safety, no less? Unbelievable!

Woman sexually assaulted in the brown line

A 20-year-old woman was standing on the platform at the Brown Line’s Francisco station on Thursday night when a man approached her, began kissing her and sexually assaulted her, Chicago police said.

The attacked happened around 10:40 p.m. at the station at 4648 N. Francisco Ave. in the Ravenswood Manor neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

The news said she wasn’t getting on a train but rather she was playing Pokémon Go....at 1040pm?!

I bought my leather wallets, gardening tools, mattresses, TVs & Blu-ray from Sears. I bought Dad’s clothes from Sears. It was hard to find reasonably priced casual well made men’s clothes until I went to Sears. I wanted to buy my stackable washer & dryer from Sears but they didn’t have what I was looking for. I have a friend who liked to buy her work blazers there. Sears did alot of things well. I will miss the department stores. It was a different experience.

Moving to Lawrence & Spaulding?

Went to this area this weekend to look at a room and I liked the place and the hood. I walked around a bit, seemed like a cool diverse area. I’m aware there’s gangs in the hood.. I’m not worried about that.. it’s Chicago..Just want to get your opinions on this area. I’m a young black male. If that adds anything. I saw virtually no blacks. Which is fine as well.

I live right around the corner on Leland and love the neighborhood! Lots of long-time residents who are very neighborly and invested in preserving a (multicultural) sense of community. Proximity to the brown line is great, too. Parking right now is a hot mess because of the construction, but in 5 years or so, when that's all done (j/k), it should be fine. ;)

Not a super-chatty block - people come and go from the multi-unit buildings and the condos on the corner, so I know few people by name despite being here 10+ years. But everyone's always been polite, no trouble-makers or weird stuff going on. Pretty diverse crowd - our upstairs tenants are black, FWIW. Safety-wise, it's a quiet corner of Albany Park. No visible shady stuff going on at night. It's still the city, of course... know your surroundings, don't be stupid, etc. My only beef with the neighborhood is the lack of green space. I'd love a decent park.

Attaching this black ribbon to the top of a U.S. flag is an acceptable alternative for flags that cannot be lowered to half-staff (see pic). Questions about flag etiquette? Please reach out Jac.Charlier@gmail.com.

On this solemn day, we mourn the loss of Barbara Bush, an outstanding and memorable woman of character. As a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, military spouse, and former First Lady, Mrs. Bush was an advocate of the American family. Mrs. Bush lived a life that reminds us always to cherish our relationships with friends, family, and all acquaintances. In the spirit of the memory of Mrs. Bush, may we always remember to be kind to one another and to put the care of others first.

As a mark of respect for the memory of Barbara Bush, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, on the day of interment. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same period at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this seventeenth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand eighteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-second.

A week ago today I was walking to the local grocery store near Belmont and Knox. As I approached the corner I noticed a news man taking video behind the senior center. My initial thought was that perhaps he was doing a story about the senior home. But when I returned from the store I noticed many more news reporters had joined the scene. At this point I questioned the first reporter I encountered. He mentioned that a dead man was found in the alley shot to death. Which that alone turned out be false to some extent. As I continued down the block I encountered another reporter at the other end of the alley off of Barry Ave. At this point I was a little more surprised because we was getting a lot closer to my residence. I said to him, "I hear it was fatal, any specifics as to what happened?" And he said that they found a man dead in the alley but no one knows what was the cause of death. He said he even walked the alley to see if he noticed a sign of the crime scene but could not pinpoint the spot where the body was found. There was no blood on the ground or anything, not even yellow tape. I mentioned that the prior reporter said it was a gun wound. And he said that no one really knows, that his report indicated that the man was beat to death and found a couple hours earlier lying in the alley.

The Tribune report:

https://www.google.com/amp/www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-met-man-found-dead-in-alley-040818-story,amp.html

That was it! I never heard an update. And this startles me to the core because my grandchildren and I live right down the street from this crime scene. For all I know we have a murderer on the lose in the neighborhood!

Does anyone know who to reach out to to find out more? I'm curious to know if they determined who the individual was? Cause of death? Was it a local resident? Was it gang related? Was it someone that may perhaps been murdered elsewhere and just dumped in the alley? So many questions are unanswered.

  • Yes, just as Bellhome says... go to your local police station or call them and tell them of your concern and questions. Each station has its own number.
You never mentioned there were any cops around just reporters. (?!) were the police there when you approached each reporter you confronted?

  • Clef in Jeff Park, no now that you mention it I didn't see any officers around. Then again, the police were alerted to the body sometime around 7:30am and when I walked by it was already around 10:15am. I don't know if that was enough time for them to conduct their investigation though.

Sometimes I think they really have no idea what they're doing. Some of those pipes they're replacing are likely 100 years old and so are the manuals on them. Just imagine the trial and error. It just needs to end already.

  • This project started in 2011 in Chicago. I think it is supposed to wrap up in 2021. They are replacing the entire system in the city. I'm still hearing the water sucking machine from blocks away and they aren't done

Women's underwear?

Guys, we are demo-ing our basement, and we found these weird small plastic bags of women's underwear stuffed into the ceiling insulation. Do we have a Dateline situation in our ceiling? What do you think the police station would do if I walked in with underwear and told them I had concerns?

When we were tearing down a wall in the kitchen, we also found a pink pair of women's underwear and some heineken bottles. We just laughed it off. But maybe we shouldn't have?

Why is pink women's underwear hidden in our ceilings?

  • Thank you eyeinthesky, that is helpful.

It just occurred to me that they also had a large freezer in the garage when we first looked at the house..

What is most surprising is that there isn't as many incidents as one would think given just how bad it is. It's just a matter of time until a small child gets nailed at one of these useless intersections. I'm not a round a bout person, but to see 9 out of 10 cars blow right thru these signs is shocking and something really needs to be done. Especially, given the proximity of Gray School = 2 blocks.

I didn’t get to see who did it in time but a neighbor came out and said they went west towards Pulaski on Wilson. This happened at St. Louis & Wilson. I am wondering if anyone has cameras that may have captured the vehicle around this time? In the morning I’ll be able to see the paint color. I'm so sorry this happened to you. I'm an insurance professional with over 20 years in the business. File the police report and get 2-3 damage estimates. Damage estimates are free except for your time and trouble. If you cannot contact and work out a way for the other driver to pay for the damage they caused to your vehicle either out of pocket or through their reputable insurance carrier, ie if the agent is someone like Insurance King, Talrow Insurance, Marvell Towers as opposed to State Farm, Geico, Progressive or another big company you may want to look to your own insurance company provided you have comprehensive aka other than collision coverage. Reason being non-standard insurance companies generally don't have the best claim service and payment record. If, however, you have liability only, check your policy to see if you purchased uninsured motorist property damage coverage which MAY, depending on the terms of your insurance contract, respond to the damage caused in this incident. I hope this all works out for you!

FOUND PUG

Hi, found Oscar wandering around Leavitt and Barry. Anyone know who he belongs to? He has a tag and I called the number on it but have not heard back from anyone. Thanks for any help.

Poor Pug. Either he's confused by the sitter and ran off, or the sitter is slacking. If I were the owner I would be freeking. Poor Oscar, but at least he's home.

  • Thanks for clearing that up......
