Woman sexually assaulted in the brown line

A 20-year-old woman was standing on the platform at the Brown Line’s Francisco station on Thursday night when a man approached her, began kissing her and sexually assaulted her, Chicago police said.

The attacked happened around 10:40 p.m. at the station at 4648 N. Francisco Ave. in the Ravenswood Manor neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

The news said she wasn’t getting on a train but rather she was playing Pokémon Go....at 1040pm?!

Silverstein Petition to Ban Sale of Assault Weapons in Illinois

Long-time gun safety advocate State Senator Ira Silverstein (D-Chicago) has introduced a measure to address the sale of assault weapons, such as the AR-15, that have been used in countless mass shootings in America.

Senate Bill 3297 will make it illegal to sell assault weapons in Illinois. The legislation spells out which weapons are included in the definition of assault weapons and also includes the sale of so-called “large capacity ammunition feeding devices” of more than 10 rounds in a...

Senate Bill 3297 will make it illegal to sell assault weapons in Illinois. The legislation spells out which weapons are included in the definition of assault weapons and also includes the sale of so-called “large capacity ammunition feeding devices” of more than 10 rounds in a single magazine, belt or drum.

If you share Sen. Silverstein's concerns about gun safety in our state, particularly in light of the mass shootings in Florida, Texas and Las Vegas, please provide your contact information to stay updated on this legislation and other gun safety bills the senator sponsors. Thanks.

    Dear Mr. Kastigar:

Thank you for contacting me regarding gun violence and access to guns in our country. I appreciate hearing from you, and I share your concerns.

Over 30,000 Americans are killed by guns each year, and this violence takes a devastating toll on families and communities. I support sensible gun safety laws that will help reduce the number of gun deaths in America. I support measures such as universal background checks to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons, mentally unstable individuals, and domestic abusers. An overwhelming majority of Americans know this is just common sense. I also support efforts to crack down on illegal gun trafficking and straw purchasing, and to limit the civilian use of high-capacity ammunition magazines that have been used by mass shooters to cause enormous harm.

We can and must do more to keep guns out of the hands of those who would misuse them, and we can do so while protecting the right of law-abiding citizens to use guns in a responsible and legal way for sport, hunting, and self-defense. My wife and I grew up in families of hunters. We know the rite of passage when a parent takes his child out into the woods and teaches him or her to shoot. The hunters I know are good people who love the sport and hate the people who use firearms to terrorize and kill.

Gun violence is a complicated problem, and there is no one solution that will stop all the tragic shootings. Reducing this violence will require dedicated efforts by families, community leaders, law enforcement, employers, faith leaders, and elected officials to prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands and to address the conditions which create violence. Unfortunately, in recent years common-sense legislation to prevent gun violence has been blocked in Congress by well-funded political organizations. But I’m not giving up. I will continue to work to ensure the federal government helps address violent crime in our communities.

Obviously won’t be coming home too often in the middle of the night but still something to consider. I do a lot of walking/running in the middle of the day which is also something on my mind.

2. How is parking for you? I see most of it is permit parking but still looks busy. Also, how is parking for guests?

3. What do you love best about the neighborhood?

Thank you so much!

Really going to miss Sears Store at Irving Park and Cicero.

Heard they're going to close in July this year.

  • nmm1 Chicagoan

I bought my leather wallets, gardening tools, mattresses, TVs & Blu-ray from Sears. I bought Dad’s clothes from Sears. It was hard to find reasonably priced casual well made men’s clothes until I went to Sears. I wanted to buy my stackable washer & dryer from Sears but they didn’t have what I was looking for. I have a friend who liked to buy her work blazers there. Sears did alot of things well. I will miss the department stores. It was a different experience.

  • I will miss Carson's very much too. I think part of the problem is people don't have a lot of extra money to spend.

Moving to Lawrence & Spaulding?

Went to this area this weekend to look at a room and I liked the place and the hood. I walked around a bit, seemed like a cool diverse area. I’m aware there’s gangs in the hood.. I’m not worried about that.. it’s Chicago..Just want to get your opinions on this area. I’m a young black male. If that adds anything. I saw virtually no blacks. Which is fine as well.

I live right around the corner on Leland and love the neighborhood! Lots of long-time residents who are very neighborly and invested in preserving a (multicultural) sense of community. Proximity to the brown line is great, too. Parking right now is a hot mess because of the construction, but in 5 years or so, when that's all done (j/k), it should be fine. ;)

Not a super-chatty block - people come and go from the multi-unit buildings and the condos on the corner, so I know few people by name despite being here 10+ years. But everyone's always been polite, no trouble-makers or weird stuff going on. Pretty diverse crowd - our upstairs tenants are black, FWIW. Safety-wise, it's a quiet corner of Albany Park. No visible shady stuff going on at night. It's still the city, of course... know your surroundings, don't be stupid, etc. My only beef with the neighborhood is the lack of green space. I'd love a decent park.

On this solemn day, we mourn the loss of Barbara Bush, an outstanding and memorable woman of character. As a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, military spouse, and former First Lady, Mrs. Bush was an advocate of the American family. Mrs. Bush lived a life that reminds us always to cherish our relationships with friends, family, and all acquaintances. In the spirit of the memory of Mrs. Bush, may we always remember to be kind to one another and to put the care of others first.

As a mark of respect for the memory of Barbara Bush, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, on the day of interment. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same period at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this seventeenth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand eighteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-second.

Fischman Bottle Shop

If you have a nuanced taste in craft beer and spirits, Fischman is one of the best in the city. They are one of two bottle shops in Chicago that carry Transient (out of Michigan and very limited). They get all the new and special release stuff from all the local and regional breweries. And its all fresh beer! Gus, the owner, sends the old beer back to the distributor. Plus, for those seeking Zombie Dust, Fischman always has it on the shelf!

Women's underwear?

Guys, we are demo-ing our basement, and we found these weird small plastic bags of women's underwear stuffed into the ceiling insulation. Do we have a Dateline situation in our ceiling? What do you think the police station would do if I walked in with underwear and told them I had concerns?

When we were tearing down a wall in the kitchen, we also found a pink pair of women's underwear and some heineken bottles. We just laughed it off. But maybe we shouldn't have?

Why is pink women's underwear hidden in our ceilings?

  • Thank you eyeinthesky, that is helpful.

It just occurred to me that they also had a large freezer in the garage when we first looked at the house..

I didn’t get to see who did it in time but a neighbor came out and said they went west towards Pulaski on Wilson. This happened at St. Louis & Wilson. I am wondering if anyone has cameras that may have captured the vehicle around this time? In the morning I’ll be able to see the paint color. I also found this in the street, it’s a long shot but maybe someone knows what kind of car it belongs to. It’s snowing but it isn’t that slippery to cause someone to do this.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I'm an insurance professional with over 20 years in the business. File the police report and get 2-3 damage estimates. Damage estimates are free except for your time and trouble. If you cannot contact and work out a way for the other driver to pay for the damage they caused to your vehicle either out of pocket or through their reputable insurance carrier, ie if the agent is someone like Insurance King, Talrow Insurance, Marvell Towers as opposed to State Farm, Geico, Progressive or another big company you may want to look to your own insurance company provided you have comprehensive aka other than collision coverage. Reason being non-standard insurance companies generally don't have the best claim service and payment record. If, however, you have liability only, check your policy to see if you purchased uninsured motorist property damage coverage which MAY, depending on the terms of your insurance contract, respond to the damage caused in this incident. I hope this all works out for you!

And behind them were the subtle ones, those who never say anything bad but just nod when the bigot throws out his strong opinions.

He is actually the worst, the nodder is, because sometimes he believes differently but he says nothing. He doesn’t want to cause trouble. For Pete’s sake, don’t cause trouble!

So when his brother-in-law or his card-playing buddy from across the alley spews out the racial filth, he nods.

Give some credit to the most subtle of the subtle. That distinction belongs to the FBI, now looking for King’s killer.

That agency took part in a mudslinging campaign against him that to this day demands an investigation.

The bullet that hit King came from all directions. Every two-bit politician or incompetent editorial writer found in him, not themselves, the cause of our racial problems.

It was almost ludicrous. The man came on the American scene preaching nonviolence from the first day he sat at the wrong end of a bus. He preached it in the North and was hit with rocks. He talked it the day he was murdered.

Hypocrites all over this country would kneel every Sunday morning and mouth messages to Jesus Christ. Then they would come out and tell each other, after reading the papers, that somebody should string up King, who was living Christianity like few Americans ever have.

Maybe it was the simplicity of his goal that confused people or the way he dramatized it.

He wanted only that black Americans have their constitutional rights, that they get an equal shot at this country’s benefits, the same thing we give to the last guy who jumped off the boat.

So we killed him. Just as we killed Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. No other country kills so many of its best people.

Last Sunday night the President said he was quitting after this term. He said this country is so filled with hate it might help if he got out. Four days later we killed a Nobel Peace Prize winner.

  • I remember this day and the many others like it. Thank you for posting.

  • Thank you for posting. How sad that 50 years later we are still fighting the same hatred and bigotry.

Greetings My Neighbors!

At 6:05 PM CST today on April 4, 1968 the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was murdered (with a Remington rifle) by a white man who was a known criminal. You know the story of course, and that's important as it's our history. On this 50th Anniversary of the violent assassination of Dr. King, I share with you the words of Edgebrook resident Mike Royko. He would publish this tomorrow, April 5, 1968.

Mike Royko: Millions in his Firing Squad
April 5, 1968

FBI agents are looking for the man who pulled the trigger and surely they will find him.

But it doesn’t matter if they do or they don’t. They can’t catch everybody, and Martin Luther King was executed by a firing squad that numbered in the millions.

They took part, from all over the country, pouring words of hate into the ear of the assassin.

The man with the gun did what he was told. Millions of bigots, subtle and obvious, put it in his hand and assured him he was doing the right thing.

It would be easy to point at the Southern redneck and say he did it. But what of the Northern disk-jockey-turned-commentator, with his slippery words of hate every morning?

What about the Northern mayor who steps all over every poverty program advancement, thinking only of political expediency, until riots fester, whites react with more hate and the gap between the races grows bigger?

Toss in the congressman with the stupid arguments against busing. And the pathetic women who turn out with eggs in their hands to throw at children.

Let us not forget the law-and-order type politicians who are in favor of arresting all Negro prostitutes in the vice districts. When you ask them to vote for laws that would eliminate some of the causes of prostitution, they babble like the bums they are.

Throw in a Steve Telow or two: the Eastern and Southern European immigrant or his kid who seems to be convinced that in 40 or 50 years he built this country. There was nothing here until he arrived, you see, so that gives him the right to pitch rocks when Martin Luther King walks down the street in his neighborhood.

Need some reco's....

Hi All...

Need a couple of recommendations, hopefully in Albany Park. I need a plumber, and someone to re-do the stairs going into my basement...whole thing (taking out the old stairs, putting in the new stairs, finishing and/or painting them as well). Thanks!

Hi, am new to EveryBlock.

I've been attending the CAPS meetings and will be at the next one
on Apr 18! Would be interested in meeting anyone along Leland.
I would also like to participate in the neighborhood cleanup on Apr 21.

Tks
Doug

  • Welcome to your neighborhood, Bob! I think you'd get more of a response if you mention what cross street of Leland you are near. That's a long street. :)
Are they promoting a neighborhood cleanup at the CAPS meeting? Cool!

I'm having a small surgical procedure done under anesthesia and I need to find someone to pick me up. I don't have any family locally and no one else that is able to help. The surgery center will not allow me to use an Uber or taxi and want me to provide a name of someone they can call when I am ready to be released. I'm looking for services similar to these two (links below) but neither are in Chicago. I don't need any special car or services. With the size of the city, you'd think they'd have something here but I can't find anything. As I start to get older, I do worry that I'll need this more often. Any ideas are appreciated.

  • They won't let you go home in a cab. This is just a fancy name for the same thing.

  • @Jamie, most cab drivers will not get out of the car and go to a doctors office to pick up a fare. a car service with a professional driver will.

Filming at Bernard & Lawrence

I didn't see this on any of the notices posted on the 33rd ward Facebook page, but there was a crew on Bernard & Lawrence and they were filming right in front of the Post Office at 4749 N Bernard St. The Post office was closed due to the filming.

The Bernard street was also blocked at Leland.

It also smells heavy of fire in the surrounding area.

Greetings My Neighbors,

As a veteran myself, you know I post about things of import to our vets of all eras, women, men, and families of veterans. This includes the flag ceremonies that we do in our communities as well as ways we can serve our veterans and their families. Tomorrow is one of those that stands out however as its significance in so many ways for our vets, for each other, for our nation rests with us to this day with much pain and hurt. I usually write something myself for my posts but this time, the words of the American Legion National Commander Denise Rohan (and the Legion's first female Commander!) say it all. Please share with our Vietnam veterans and their families and please, thank them for their service to our nation!

___________
Thursday, March 29, is Vietnam War Veterans Day.

While we honor our war dead on Memorial Day and our living veterans on Veterans Day, this is a time when we give a special tribute to those who served during the Vietnam War. For many, it’s the recognition they deserved when they returned to America.

They defended our flag with honor. They supported democracy. They fought in brutal conditions.

Yet when many Vietnam War veterans returned to America, they were unwelcomed. While we cannot change the actions of the past, we can show our support and gratitude today – something that should have happened 50 years ago.

In fact, the American Legion is already doing this. http://www.vietnamwar50th.com/

Across the nation, ceremonies will honor Vietnam War veterans this Thursday. Of course, the Vietnam Wall will play a special role in honoring and remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Throughout the United States, nearly every state is planning to host commemoration events.

We should not allow this special day of recognition to fade when the calendar turns over. Join me in thanking Vietnam veterans for their service not just this Thursday, but every day.

Welcome Home.

Litter at the Plaza

What’s up with the overflowing trash cans in front of ALL the businesses in the Stripmall/plaza on Leland and Pulaski. The one with the Spincycle. Trash completely covers the interior corner patch of grass by the daycare and building up around the base of the trash cans. It’s it the individual business owner’s or the property owner’s responsibility to pick up trash? Who do we call as a significant amount of it is blowing off property into the neighborhood

Let's get something done about guns

Limit the magazine size to 3 bullets - after that, a reload is required.

Require sales registration on all gun sales, including sales to relatives.

Require background checks and registration for all gun sales, ownership transfer and/or purchases.

None of this threatens to take away guns. None of this violates the letter and the spirit of the 2nd Amendment.

  • JG

Bob your lack of knowledge is why people like you should not be allowed in the gun debate. Your are like the rest trying to ban guns with know knowledge about them. Please go to the back of the line and come up when you actually know something other than what you read.from the media

  • JG

And how do you expect criminals to follow the law when normal citizen can’t follow the law by not driving and using cell phones and I’m sure you have done it bob. So tell me how that 3 bullet law will work. People don’t follow basic laws you expect criminals to

OVER A DOZEN SHOTS FIRED!!!

I am 4200 N. on Lawndale, just heard at least a dozen shots from different directions. Hard to pinpoint locations, sounded like Central Park and Montrose. Also, somewhere towards Hamlin and Irving. Please, tell me, was it just fireworks?

  • ward greenleaf Smokey and the Bandit, Hooper, Cannonball Run...

This will get pulled but specific buildings managed by a property owner on the n/w corner of montrose and lawndale caters to section 8 residents. These buildings house the shenanigans shaking up the neighborhood.

  • Mr Greenleaf :

You choose the building, I will post a notice of inspection. You pose as an insurance or bank inspector and we go together through any of my buildings. After which time we can discuss any objectionable tenants. While you are contemplating my offer consider
reading the ninth commandment. Please remember, i should provide at least a 48 hour notice, but if you desire an unannounced, ambush visit, that's o.k. too. Let me know.

Road rage rear end incident today on Irving Park Rd

This afternoon, I witnessed the most extreme road rage I have ever seen. If you (or someone you know) were affected or your car was damaged, I have a photo of the offender's vehicle and plates.

Two cars -- a blue Toyota sedan and a beige Kia SUV -- were driving westbound on Irving. The woman in the SUV was driving on the right of the 2 traffic lanes and became enraged with the Toyota driver -- maybe because she was trying to get back into the lanes of traffic? She swerved repeatedly at him, swearing and screaming, almost forcing his car into oncoming traffic. At a red light, she pulled alongside him and rammed the side of his car with her door, which she forcefully opened and closed. This continued for several blocks until, furious and distracted, she rear ended another car just east of Kimball. All of this was taking place in my rear view mirror, and at one point, I rolled down my window and snapped a couple photos, hoping to catch the plates. I did.

I circled around the block to try to provide witness information to the rear ended car, but it seemed that both the Kia and the car she struck (which I can't describe) were gone. I tried calling 311 and the police, but they said there was nothing I could do.

Please comment if you know the victims of this incident, as I would be willing to serve as a witness. It was a pretty scary situation, and I can only imagine how frustrating and frightening it was for the other drivers who were directly affected and had their cars damaged.

Big BOOM last night!

At about 1:00 am, I was woken up by a big boom that sounded like an explosion. I am in the vicinity of Kimball and Lawrence. Called 911, even though I looked outside and nothing seemed out of place. Others must have called too as fire trucks came rolling through. I didn't see anything this morning either. Anyone have any info? Just confused as to what it was.

The business community in greater Albany Park reflects the area’s diversity and is becoming a hub for creative industries, from brewing to design, creatives are flocking to the area. Why? Small businesses are incredibly supportive of each other and the Northside community, plus local residents shop the district.

“Whether opening a new business or adding another location, there are many perks to doing business in Albany Park,” says Duka Dabovic, North River Commission’s economic development coordinator. “Commercial rents are affordable for entrepreneurs and the area has a high walk score making it perfect for retail activity. The Albany Park Chamber of Commerce is engaged in developing the neighborhood’s various business corridors while attracting different audiences to the area through events and neighborhood promotions.”

Here’s what seven local businesses that offer creative professional services had to say about working in the area.

I really wish some creative businesses would open in the retail spaces at Sacremento and Montrose. They took forever to build because of disputes with electrical pole locations or something and now have been for rent forever. Anyone know what gives?
