Albany + Diversey corner store shut down?

I noticed a big orange CLOSED by the City of Chicago as of 5-22-2018 sign on the front door of Diversey Market at the corner of Albany and Diversey. This place was recently sold (I think?) and renovated within the past few weeks. Does anyone know why it has been shut down? The sign had no details, and the store was open on Monday.

  • i don't see that the property changed hands recently - at least not on MLS, not via address 3056 W Diversey

  • That sounds like the signs city slaps on your front door when they a business gets shut down for severe health code violations.

Although, to be fair, I don't see any inspections since 2014 which suggests they have not been in business under this name since at least 2015 in the city's eyes.

Amid Affordable Housing Dispute, Conservatives Seek a Home in Chicago - ProPublica
When news broke last week that a proposed affordable housing development on Chicago's Northwest Side had likely been put on hold, Ammie Kessem, a Republican candidate for state representative, vowed on Facebook that it wasn't the end of the story. Democrats, Kessem wrote, would pay for pushing the plan - including 45th Ward Ald.

If interested in any/all of this, please PM me. You'll have to be prepared to pick it up/move it from my 2nd floor apartment before the end of the holiday weekend (I'm not a big fan of putting stuff out in the alley). I'm very close to Elston/Kedzie. Thanks.

297 Apartments Near O'Hare Approved Over Alderman's Objection
CITY HALL - A key city panel approved the construction of a seven-story, 297-unit luxury apartment complex near the Cumberland CTA Blue Line station in a 7-1 vote on Thursday despite the objection of Ald. Anthony Napolitano (41st), who said residents of the 41st Ward did not want the project.

Napolitano: From Pro-Publica Illinois:https://www.propublica.org/article/illinois-policy-institute-northwest-chicago-affordable-housing
Amid Affordable Housing Dispute, Conservatives Seek a Home in Chicago

Groups tied to Illinois Policy Institute and talk show host Dan Proft back GOP candidates on city’s Northwest Side.(Excerpts):"Starting with the 2012 elections, some institute leaders began funding campaigns after a series of transactions involving other organizations and political action committees they formed, records show."

"The Illinois Opportunity Project, in turn, poured more than $1.7 million into political campaigns and committees across the state, according to election board records. "..."Some of the money from the Illinois Opportunity Project went to a pair of Northwest Side candidates for the Chicago City Council in 2015. John Garrido, a Chicago police officer running for alderman of the city’s 45th Ward, received $2,000, while Anthony Napolitano, a former police officer and firefighter vying to be 41st Ward alderman, got $3,000."..."In 2016, the Illinois Opportunity Project also loaned $325,000 to Liberty Principles, a political action committee founded and run by Proft. Liberty Principles spent more than $10.5 million in races across the state in 2015 and 2016, including about $118,000 backing Garrido. Proft didn’t respond to a request for comment. The 2015 results were mixed. In the 41st Ward, Napolitano upset an ally of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s. But for the second time in four years, Garrido lost to John Arena, a self-described progressive who received significant backing from unions and liberal donors."

Welles Park Dog Park?

Thinking Welles Park needs a dog park or signs can't let your dog off leash and someone to ticket. Every morning on baseball diamonds and today we have a party of 5 dogs off leash with owners chatting. Was hoping to cut through park but will go around.

  • I couldn't agree more Cubs. My dog is always on a leash and I deal with this at Winnemac park regularly. Dogs off leash approach my dog as I'm walking him and if they run up to us, he feels threatened. (His eyesight is not great anymore). I would much prefer there were a fence around the unofficial dog park that's formed there so we all can enjoy the park.

  • The police don't always coordinate with the Park District management. This problem has to be addressed with the park supervisor. If you don't know who that is, go to the Chicago Park District website and look it up or click on CONTACT US on the home page and leave your complaint there.

5200 W. Roscoe

Noticed the construction going on inside this building of the corner of 5200 W Roscoe/Laramie. The ground level has framing going on front to back. Any ideas what they are doing?

  • Is framing going up inside the existing building or outside?

  • From what I seen that night in the dark, the framing is going on inside the first floor, front to back. Please note, I was inquiring if anyone had ideas what business establishment was coming. Or what they are building inside the place, not if there are permits. I'm not one to report people. I'm glad the building was purchased and work is being done instead of sitting abandoned.

Vine maintenance

Hi neighbors, we have a vine-covered building that we're trying to maintain. We don't want to completely get rid of the vines, but we would like them to stay healthy. Can anyone recommend a service that would help with this? It's a 3 story building and the vines go to the top. At the very least I'd like them to be trimmed away from the windows (they are murder on the screens!) but I'm thinking we'll need professional help.

  • Vines are like ladders for ants to crawl in your unit

  • If you have a brick building, vines are the worst thing you could do. Vines eat away at the mortar and tuckpointing. Can completely ruin the masonry over time. Be prepared for the expense of re-tuckpointing if you continue to allow vines to grow on your building.

Missing Cat: White with black spots, male

Hello. My cat went missing from Pulaski and Milwaukee area. He’s 7 months, medium fur. He has a big black spot on his nose. His name is Amileo and he’s very friendly. If you see him or find him, please contact me.

  • Thank you for letting us know he was found, Abby H. Besides liking to hear the good news, it helps us to know to stop keeping an eye out for him.

    Bet you're glad he's back! :-)

  • Good neighbor! I have lived on Troy St. since 1990 and love it!

I agree. Good news is always welcome.

More images of the Avondale package thief

He is at it again. Please keep an eye out and call the police.

  • Thanks Scott. I saw this guy Monday morning at 5:30am. Was walking my dogs and he was on his bike on Waveland and Springfield, headed east. I didn't notice the backpack but definitely same outfit, hat, and bike. Will keep my eyes open.

  • They removed photos...people, we are on our own!

Found Social Security card

I just found a social security card on the sidewalk of the 4100 block of Keystone. First name is Evangelia. Please let me know if this is you!

  • Wicked Fast BMW Average Chicagoan who loves her city

I too live on the 4100 block of Keystone and do not know an Evangelia (though admittedly I don't know everyone). She may not live here. I too would suggest shredding it as she can get a new one and having one lost out there could lead to identity theft. I'm glad a good person found it and will take care to make sure that doesn't happen.

  • We found a credit card and the lady was listed in the phone book, lived a couple blocks down. I had my own returned to me because the finder located me on facebook. Saved a lot of hassle.
