Chicago Water Meter

Hey Everyone, we purchased our Single Family home a little less then a year ago & we do not have a water meter installed. Our current water bill is just under $500 (6 months) for 2 people. What is everyone's experience with this? Is it beneficial to get the meter installed?

  • I have a large SF with two people and ours is around $80 every two months. As per above, check for drips and leaks, that seems very high!

  • Definitely get a meter! Same as above 2 people living in a 3-bedroom 2-bathroom house. And my bill is proximately $50 quarterly. My meter is located under the front porch I believe

Guy rings doorbell asking to speak about one of the politicians running.

Yesterday I had a gentleman ring my doorbell, ask for me by first name but said he is hoping for my vote? How would they get my name if the apt is under my gfs name? I didn't open the door but thought that was odd.

I am more or less confused, dont think he was malicious, but found it strange.

Doorbell Ringing Near Milwuakee and Kildare

Has anyone's doorbells been ringing from 1 am to for 4 am lately? My family and I are quite worried about this incident. There was no banging of doors, but the doorbells were just at it.

  • We use to at our first apartment, it was usually drunks walking past ringing bells or a tenants drunk friend ringing the wrong bell

Shootings near Ridgeway & Milwaukee

There have been shootings in this area before, but this week on 2/15 and 2/14/18 a couple of cars, one being a black Honda Civic, with their lights turned off have openly shot at the house second to last from the alley near Ridgeway and Milwaukee. If I had to guess, it’s the house with the 2984 address that got shot at.

The guys that live at the location are bad news. They attract violence. I don’t know if the...

We have neighborhood watches, we attend CAPS meetings, we call the Police when something suspicious is noticed, the Police have special detectives specifically for gangs. But we still have an epidemic of gang crime. What is being done wrong???

As far as why the gun violence is going on in th le first place, I think drug altercations sparked it in this particular situation. Many of my neighbors are aware of it, but I’ve also learned that with kids jobs and busy lives, they assume other neighbors will take action and don’t really do anything, sadly.

Dibs are not only Unappreciated, but Also Illegal

Hey everyone, I know with the snow this year it's a real pain in the butt to dig your car out from the side of the road. But dibs are tacky, unhelpful, and make our beautiful neighborhood look like a dump. If everyone who dug out a spot left the spot, there would be a spot for everyone who needed one.

None of us own the streets in Chicago and none of us can claim ownership of a parking spot on these public ways. I don't even park on the street, but if I see dibs I unequivocally move them up onto the sidewalk in an unobtrusive area.

Be a good neighbor - don't place dibs.

***REWARD***

If any of my neighbors on the 3700 block of St. Louis / Bernard alley have video footage from Friday night and Saturday day (9pm Friday to 2pm Saturday, please PM me and I will gladly pay. Someone got into my garage, opened the overhead door and placed a piece of wood trim nails up on the threshold of the overhead doorway. The police will not let me file a report because I do not own the property and I saw the nails before I drove over them. Thanks very much.

  • Exactly, Jim. I should have driven over them so I could file a report to have when this nutter escalates

Ice Dam...water dripping into back rooms

Hello neighbors. Woke up to frozen interior rear stairs and some pretty bad leaks in the back rooms this morning. Looks like Ive got one helluvan ice dam. Anyone have a reputable company they can recommend to clear the ice today? Or any other recommendations? Trying to prevent thousands in water damage. Thanks for your help.

  • Do you have anyone that you would recommend to install the ice cables? I have a huge issue I'm a second-story roof gutter area and have since I moved in 5 years ago. I have an ice dam on the south side of my house and this year is three times larger than last year. I'm pretty sure that those ice cables would solve my problem!

  • It can be a bit complicated to install the melt cables as it requires power. The cables I am familiar with are plug-in, so getting a new wet-use electric line run to your roof or near your roof with an outdoor use waterproof box/pipe/connectors and GFCI outlet can be the...

It can be a bit complicated to install the melt cables as it requires power. The cables I am familiar with are plug-in, so getting a new wet-use electric line run to your roof or near your roof with an outdoor use waterproof box/pipe/connectors and GFCI outlet can be the main expense.

As far as operation is concerned, they sell accompanying plug-in thermostats for $17 that will allow power to your melt cable based on the outdoor temperature hitting a certain reading. Personally I think this is a waste of energy as then the cable will be on when it is cold and not snowy as well as when there is snow.

I like them on a switch in the basement that I control. Or on a multi-level structure you can have the power line run somewhere under the back porch.

I'm not a fan of Home Depot due to their policy or frequent decision of re-stocking returns that customers have brought back as broken or missing parts, but there is a video on ice melt cable installation there. I hate it when I have to go back because I was sold some broken or incomplete garbage. I've had plenty of good experience at HD, also but they simply and easily could do better. Another beef is if there is one certain thing I need there is a shelf label there, the wrong thing is in that spot, and there are 28-49 of each item next to it and zero of the item I need.

Here is the product and video link:

Not a Nanny Share but I have a small in-home daycare located by Elston & Irving Park with over 18 yrs. of experience and I am CPR certified. I provide healthy, well balanced meals and snacks in a loving and nurturing environment, have excellent references from past and present parents and I charge reasonable rates. Some of our daily activities include music, play and story time along with plenty of outside time in our beautiful gated and grassy courtyard.

I know how difficult it is to leave your child with someone but I assure you I will give your little one all the love, attention and care they need unlike some of those huge daycare facilities. I would love the opportunity to care for your little one, so please contact me for more information or to set up an appointment to come by and see the beautiful set up. Thank you!

LOST Cat - 100$ Reward

Hi everyone. Our forever outdoor cat Baxter (gray and white tabby on left in second picture) is still missing. We’ve never been able to keep a collar on him, he’s been neutered, not chipped. Small rip in left ear. Please be on the lookout and let me know if anyone has seen him. Please also take a minute to check any garages, basements, outdoor crawl spaces or under decks/porches, or basically anywhere a cat could sneak in to hide or get stuck. They are curious animas.
You may also call the number 773-407-6961 if you have any details regarding him or have seen him. A 100$ reward is up. Please and thank you.

  • We are a ways away but I will definitely watch for him and keep you in our thoughts. As someone who loves cats, it's easy to imagine how hard this must be.

  • Thank you all. We’re still holding out hope. I will give treehouse a call. We’ve checked with them to see if anyone brought a cat in like him but no luck yet. I don’t think he would gravitate to a colony but you never know.

MISSING Gray Cat

Hi everyone. Our forever outdoor cat Baxter (gray and white tabby on left in pic) has been missing for several days now. We’ve never been able to keep a collar on him, he’s been neutered, not chipped. Please be on the lookout and let me know if anyone has seen him. You may also call the number 773-407-6961 if you have any info regarding him. Posters are up in the neighborhood around Gorden Tech (DePaul Prep) Please and thank you.

Another stellar display of Darwinism! More good news, residents are all fine! This might even close a few investigations in Lincoln square .
