Carjacked on Fullerton 7/14 @ noon

Hi all ... wanted to let you know I got carjacked today in broad daylight in Logan Square. I was on Fullerton by the Social Security office at Sawyer. I had just parked and locked my car when two young black men approached me and demanded my keys. I yelled at them hoping I’d scare them off and when that failed, I yelled for help. Hi all ... wanted to let you know I got carjacked today in broad daylight in Logan Square. I was on Fullerton by the Social Security office at Sawyer. I had just parked and locked my car when two young black men approached me and demanded my keys. I yelled at them hoping I’d scare them off and when that failed, I yelled for help. Several people simply stood by and watched. I do know at least 2 people called 911 — so if you’re out there and you did that, thank you. To the lone guy who sought me out to make sure I was ok, thank you. To the two guys across the street who watched two men throw me to the ground, steal my purse and then steal my car, I hope this never happens to you. But if it does, I pray someone helps you though you did not help me. At any rate, just wanted to give everyone the heads up to be alert. Police report has been filed. Credit cards have been canceled. Locks have been changed. And if anyone on Everyblock did see something they could share with police to catch these guys, that would be appreciated. Stay safe out there!

  • They aren't afraid of the police anymore! keep on protesting against the police and you see the results. The sentencing for these crimes will have them on the streets again in no time. Repeat offenders!

  • Nice false equivalency here. One has nothing to do with the other.

And who are you telling to “keep on protesting against the police”? There’s not a single criminal who was protesting the police who is going to read a word you just said.

EB may be leaving, but we're all still here. Let's start an EveryBlock (or whatever) sub-reddit!

hey all. i'm equally bummed about losing everyblock. i've become used to all the great input, feedback and dissenting opinions...even the varied responses to trolls. they enrich my morning. :)

so why give it up? surely some of you know about reddit.com. we can create a sub-reddit just for us. if we ALL hopped over to a new sub-reddit, then we wouldn't have to lose a thing. we could retain our anonymity. all we need are some basic posting rules...

i haven't thought out the details, because i know we are all from different neighborhoods...but calling it chicago-northsiders or something comes to mind. there are already a couple of NWside sub-reddits, but they are vastly underused. we could at least just start one and see what happens.

We're losing Everyblock?

Just noticed the message at the top of the Everyblock screen, from what I understand we're losing Everyblock on the 19th, and they're asking people to sign up with Nextdoor, correct? I'm not misreading this? If true this makes me so sad.

What if you want to ask a question to people near your hood, like in Bucktown, Logan Square or Humbolt Park, if you have been designated as North Wicker Park, and also want to get the news or postings from those areas (the area that I am in, in Everyblock encompasses a wider area)? Seems that you can access the other areas postings in a search, but aren't able to receive announcements or postings from there, and are not able to post questions there. Also, In the a newsletter there are things like dog training and moving sales, but nothing like this kind of discussion, and no postings of news like new restaurants, or things going on in the area. It seems all very bland and much more like personal adds.

Gas Pipe Construction = High Gas Bill

We just got finished with the whole city of chicago replacing our gas lines on our street. Something they've been doing all over the city I've noticed. And now I just got my 1st gas bill since then and it's the highest I've ever been billed. Even compared to my winter bills in Jan & Feb for the past 4 yours, it's never been this high. And this is for last month of June so I KNOW that we did not use our gas that much. Has anyone else experienced this? I tried calling people's gas and I waited 2 hours and 20 min for a supervisor and no one ever answered. I finally hung up. Ugh.

  • robin in WRP I support a 28th Amendment 4Free & Fair Elections!

Our monthly bill from People's (we're on the "budget" plan) went up $45 this month

  • Electric heat is more expensive than gas. I used energy efficient heaters to supplement my gas space heaters, still cost a lot of money.

Catalytic Converter Stolen Last Night!

The catalytic converter on my 2004 car was stolen sometime during the night last night. I went out to my car this morning, and found it was gone. Be Careful! Car alarms don't sound when this is done to a car - they saw off the converter under the car. My mechanic said it takes them about a minute to do it. Yikes!

  • We had guests in town and unfortunately, they had theirs stolen too on the night of July 11, while parked on California. Really unfortunate, and sounds like they may have hit a number of cars in one night.

Construction workers parking on zoned/permit streets

Does anyone know what the rules are, if any, regarding construction workers parking on streets with permit parking? A quick search on the city website and I was only able to find information on parking for city workers. My street is permit parking and there is currently an 8 unit building going up. Every day there are easily 10-15 construction worker vehicles parked on my street. They just put their yellow vests in the driver's side window and I've never seen them get ticketed. They are taking up all the free parking on the street and it's frustrating.

  • Tim

I will bring it up with my doctor. I'm not sure entitlement is something I understand in myself.

  • Bottom line: a yellow vest on a seat or on a driver's side window is not a parking permit.

The temorary city permit for contractor applies only to temporary vehicles like cement trucks and definitely not worker's cars.

No, an "I Support The FOP" sticker or police memorial license plates will not get you out of a moving violation, let alone a parking ticket.

Yes, you are entitled if you believe you are above the law.

Classical Guitarist for Wedding

Hi there - I am trying to see if anyone out there knows of a classical guitarist that I can hire for my wedding in September. I'm looking for someone who can play a few of the common wedding progression songs as well as current/modern songs with a classical/renaissance flair. Not sure if that makes sense. Basically I need someone to play some background music before the ceremony and at first it sounds like a beethoven but then you realize it's radiohead! Well, if you exist or know of someone. Please forward me their info. Greatly appreciated!!!!

Hi All -
I am desperately trying to get this info out!

Last Tuesday (the 19th) around 1pm I witnessed what looked to be animal abuse in the area by (what I think) a dog walker. I love dogs, especially Golden Retrievers so this was definitely unsettling. As I look back, I definitely should have called 311 or atleast said something but did not want to cause any more issues.

This happened at the corner of Oakley & Addison. The (presumed) walker came down Oakley towards Addison, away from Waveland, at this point the dog laid down and the walker kicked it a few times. The dog then got up and they crossed over Oakley where the dog laid down again and the walker continued to kick the dog. They then walked down Oakley towards the school/Waveland.

I tried to follow them in hopes of seeing where the dog went to stop by later and inform the owner but unfortunately ran out of space/time and had to get to work.

If you know this dog or the owner, I strongly suggest showing them this video so this doesn’t happen again.

Chicago Water Dept Strikes yet again!

I woke up to find out Chicago Water will be tearing up our street for the 3rd time in approx 18 months. I get that work needs to be done, but they prohibit street parking across several blocks in the neighborhood for 2 MONTHS each time.... and they show up for about 7 days during those 2 months to do the actual repairs. Anyone else frustrated with the city Water Dept? Any suggestions for holding them accountable?

  • Wait until they only show up every two days and start work before 7am.. They did this by my bldg every year for about 3 years. The problem is there is no planning. First people gas dug it up, took about 6 weeks and put in a nice new street, 3 months later, the water company, then the following year peoples gas again. This is the first year they haven't done anything... yet.

  • Tim

I suggest taking action yourself, as it's too easy to complain. Visit the alderman, run for office, apply for a position within these companies so you can change the culture. Again, way to easy to complain.

  • Unfortunately these companies think they know what they are doing. So taxes pay them to dig up a brand new street to do the work they have to do because this is not planned properly. They would rather use tax dollars and dig up 5 times in the same year rather than coordinate everyone to do the work at the same time the FIRST TIME the street is dug up. More profitable for them to dig it up 10 x in one year ...

When he got out before I had trouble catching him as he was so nervous. Please let me know if you spot him so I can try looking where he was last seen.

Cook County Towing/Avondale Collision - Open Meeting at City Hall

Neighbors - we've all complained now we must insist the City follow through! Please attend an open meeting at City Hall, 121 N LaSalle, room 805 on Thurs, Oct 5, 10 AM.

The purpose of this meeting is to address the numerous complaints of reckless driving, aggressive behavior, noise at all hours of the day and night, misuse of the lot at Keeler & Milwaukee in accordance with zoning, and overall "junkyard" state of the property occupied by these businesses.

Please attend. Please bring your neighbors. Please call the alderman's office, and more importantly 911 when you see issues happening in real time.

We deserve respectful neighbors in our community and these businesses are infringing on our safety.

  • To address the concerns and take steps towards being better neighbors, AC was advised that they needed to operate inside the scope of their business license. To address the concerns and take steps towards being better neighbors, AC was advised that they needed to operate inside the scope of their business license. Their working hours should not go past 6 p.m. They should provide their contract with CCT for review. They are only permitted 15 (possibly 16) spaces on their Milwaukee-facing lot. They should not load out or receive any cars on the Keeler side. Drops on the Milwaukee side must be on the property (street drops not allowed). Signage was required (and subsequently displayed) pertaining to driving cautiously and being quiet. Vendors are to use the Milwaukee-side entrance only to conduct business.

Per the owner of Avondale Collision, they used to but do not currently have a contract with Cook County Towing.

I call all this non-progress because the last meeting with Chicago Business Affairs and Consumer Protection it was deemed that AC provided all documentation and signage to maintain their business and continue to operate at Milwaukee and Keeler, and since then we've seen the number of cars in the lot continue to grow again, CCT continue to drop off cars after 6pm + AC being open beyond 6pm. The only "win" I've witnessed is that the CCT are less likely to idle next to my home, but, from the comments here and recent comments on Facebook, it sounds like they have just found new spots to and neighbors to disturb. Please keep calling 911 to report reckless driving, please keep telling the Aldermans this is unacceptable behavior from a neighbor.

  • No contract with CCT...what a joke, I’m going to snap a photo every chance I see a cct truck dropping a car off

Not sure if everyone saw the post made at the beginning of the week. Within the post was a link to the filmed incident of this person kicking a dog. I am pretty sure I figured out who the person is if indeed it is a dog walker but I want to verify via video before I start accusing people. Facebook took down the video - original poster trying to find out why.
There are so many comments in his thread here I am not sure if anyone is seeing I am asking if the video can be emailed to me. Once I see the video and can verify OR if the original poster John Paul is able to view the photos I sent him and verify, I will then do a little more detective work to find out his identity so police can be informed. John Paul if you see this please check the photos I sent you. You are the actual eyewitness and may need to be the one to go back to the police about this.

I don't want to upload photos here because if my memory is completely wrong, I don't want to start a vigilante movement against the guy I took pics of (he was also with a different dog but backpack/build etc are same if I remember correctly).

So, please help if you can!

  • Tipsy - I'm going to email you as well.

  • Tim - There is no citation for cruelty - - who told you that they found the person and gave him a citation? Perhaps he did not have a dog license - that would be a citation. I can find nothing about it in the media - - - -
