Garbage Garbage Garbage!

Why are the streets of the 1st Ward constantly lined with garbage?! This is an ongoing problem that seems to have no initiative in place to care for the situation. It seems to be especially bad in the triangle of Milwaukee, California and Armitage. Businesses and restaurants do little to,keep the sidewalk and street in front of them clean. The Chase School property is often a garbage dump and Point St and Francis Place which border the school are littered most of the time. This is appalling and unacceptable as littering is preventable and clean up can be successful with a cooperative effort. We live here and are all invested in a healthy, clean and safe environment. It is time that this issue is tackled! Clean up!

  • This is not the only areas affected. It stretches out to six corners at North avenue and continues west all the way down North avenue for several blocks. North Ave is disgusting as well as the alleys in the West Bucktown/Humboldt areas.

You will need to continuously file complaints with 311 via phone, online and through the Chicago Works app. Make sure you take pictures that you can attach to the app or online for supporting evidence.

  • Rumhamms you are right. Calling the Aldermans office, calling streets and sanitation etc is necessary and a part of a comprehensive Initiative that must come from the Aldermans office. Businesses etc., must all be held accountable for clean up and residences with excessive garbage in front of them should be warned with a follow up fine. Accountability and and enforcement are important. We must get in front of this issue rather than just be stuck in this futile cycle.

Landlord Not Repairing Air Conditioning

Hello all, my wife and I have rented from our landlord for two years now. In the past, when things have needed repaired he has dragged his feet until we pester him repeatedly. Last fall, our central air stopped working and we let him know about it. Fast forward to this May, and he tells us that he couldn't get us scheduled for a repair until early June. Early June comes and we get a hold of him on the phone and learn that he had never actually had an appointment for us. Here it is, nearly the end of June and he is not responding to calls, e-mails, or texts. Having suffered through multiple days of 90+ degrees inside so far this summer, and seeing more coming in the next week, my wife and I are beyond frustrated. We are paying for a unit that includes central air/heat, and have not been able to use it, and have had days where we need to leave our home to find someplace cooler. What can we do about this situation? I have read about giving official notice in the mail of there being an issue, and giving 14 days to have it repaired while withholding some rent, but I'm not sure of what we actually have the power to do in this case. Any advice would be welcomed. Thank you!

Turns out she has more of a time management/procrastination issue than an intentional tenant neglect issue, and now we have a better relationship because we help take care of her unit (she pays, of course, we just organize things for her with her approval). Maybe your landlord will understand your sense of urgency if you offer to get it done for him: "seems like you're really busy, why don't I make the calls about the AC unit and keep you posted? I'd be happy to help!"

Johnny's / Mezcaleria

So it looks like work has commenced in the Johnny's space. No idea what it is but this would be the last major vacancy around the square.

Just saying for all the haters...

Noticed that the "For Rent" signs came down about two weeks ago. Was waiting to hear something "official", but it's great to know that something is being done in there.

  • Can't find out any info. I really hope it's another diner. The neighborhood could use it and I'd hate to see the space gutted. The second iteration of Johnny's was gone too soon. Crossing fingers that awesome patio will be back as well!

  • When the federal government provided 56M for the project, it became a transportation thoroughfare.

It was not exclusively made as a bicycle trail but part of the agreement with the federal dollars meant that it must be used as a transportation route. Which includes all form of transportation, including walking, biking, skate-boarding, and no limitations on your dog companion.

  • Ellen,
I agree with your recollection. Also, the East end of the Trail is walking distance to the Metra at Ashland and Armitage, so it was considered a leg ( pardun the pun) to downtown or out to the burbs.

Also, The Friends of the Bloomingdale Trail was run by a bunch of bicycle enthusiasts, which is who took the point for 15 years on this project.

Logan Square Moms Group? ho

I am a first time mom and off from work until February. While I love being home with our daughter, its tough to be cooped up all day and without social interaction while my husband works late. It would also just be nice to meet other moms/parents in the neighborhood. Is anyone aware of any moms groups in the area? Or any parents feeling the same way and want to meet/interact with others in the same boat? Our little one just turned two months old.

Hi Ladies...while this post is from several months ago, wondering if anyone is still interested in connecting and/or meeting for playdates and adult time. I am a working, new mom of a 4-month old boy and would love to meet other moms in the neighborhood.

ATM Skimmer scams run rampant - even at bank ATMs

Diagonal white lines on side of road? Am I allowed to park here?

Please see the attached picture. I don't think i've ever seen these road markings in the city before. What do these diagonal white lines mean? There were a few separated ones near the curb (this is the closest space to the intersection) I did not see any tow zone signs or yellow marked curb or anything else to indicate it is not a valid area for parking. I could not really find any information about these markings except for that they are sometimes used near handicap parking, however I did not see any handicap parking signs on the street either. Anyone have any idea?

  • Marcelino G New 31st Ward Resident

Can’t say for sure but it may be a right turn lane next to a bike lane. Only JD knows exact location. Maybe he can give us that to help.

  • I think the meaning of small hash marks (as opposed to parking spaces) on the pavement is to indicate a "no drive / no park" zone. I see them between the driving lanes and the bike lane, on clybourn, for instance. I also see them at intersections where they seem to want to keep people from parking/driving between the stop sign and the parking lane -- , perhaps leaving it open as a site line?

he weekend began with seven people shot in just an hour on the South Side. It ended with 10 people shot in two attacks on the West Side.

By Monday morning, at least 56 people had been hit by gunfire in Chicago over the weekend. At least nine of them died, according to data kept by the Tribune.

It was the worst weekend for violence in the city this year. But more troubling, it was close to comparable weekends in 2016 and 2017, when gun violence hit levels not seen in Chicago in more than a decade.

"Most of Chicago celebrated and enjoyed this weekend," Chicago police First Deputy Superintendent Anthony Riccio told reporters, referring to Pride Fest on the North Side and various Father’s Day celebrations. "However, we saw an unacceptable and frustrating level of gun violence in several communities.

“There’s too many illegal guns on the street,” he added, echoing a constant theme of his boss, Superintendent Eddie Johnson. “They’re too easy to get.”

As bad as shootings have been in some parts of the city this year, overall they have been down substantially from the previous two years. But not last weekend, an analysis of Tribune data shows.

At least 59 people were shot in Chicago during the weekend of June 16 last year and again during the weekend of June 17 in 2016.

Weather was no doubt a factor. Temperatures climbed into the middle 90s both days, drawing more people into the street later into the night. According to police, that usually increases the odds of rivals running into each other or arguments escalating into gunfire.

Two of the city's most violent police districts bore the brunt of the weekend gunfire: 10 shot in Harrison, 9 in bordering Ogden, the data show. The next highest was the Near West Side District: 7 shot in two attacks. The Englewood District to the south also recorded 7 shot.

'Unacceptable and frustrating': Chicago sees most violent weekend of the year

Cats Outside?

What is the policy on housecats being allowed loose outdoors? I frequently see one leaving an apartment near my house and it has been “aggressive-defensive” to my dog. Tonight was the most concerning because it sliced at my dogs face unexpectedly from underneath a car.

I dont know exactly know which apartment it comes from and dont plan to go knocking on doors asking who's cat it is. Im just curious if there is a cat “leash law” and who enforces it.

  • Again - according to Chicago law - if you allow your cat to roam off of your property - it is possible that you would rec. a citation - 1st time 200.00 = second time 500.00 and call to appear at an administrative hearing..... but most importantly - this city is not safe for our dear pets to roam...... Take care !

  • Pet Parent - and all - - it is illegal - to let your cats roam - - - - for ever so many reasons - all reasons are good ones......

Getting hit by a car is around 100 times worse than a bike. It's false to equate the two like so many here have. Car drivers must burden 100% of responsibility. If you can't drive a car and avoid idiot bikers and pedestrians we would all be safer if you stuck to Uber.

On the contrary, the bicyclist in this example, Bart, did not appear to follow the rules and could have been seriously hurt as a result of his actions. Kittyhop - it's a long story what actually happened. I am amazed no one posted about it. The entire block was in our front yard yesterday.

Here is the short version: Minor, drunk, stolen car. It was around 4:30pm and I was watching TV when I heard this loud BOOOOM. I seriously thought the house next door blew up. So I ran outside and saw the car in the yard. Two girls jumped out of the car and ran. Then one of them came back to get the keys. I tried to call the cops, get a picture of them and not loose my calm. Cops showed up, interviewed everyone (at this point the entire neighborhood is on my corner). Then another neighbor showed up and was like " I saw them walking in the alley". So the cops looked at me and were like "you are coming with us to identify them....". So I experienced my first chase. In a police car. Nope, this was never on my bucket list. We finally caught the driver in an alley 3 streets over. By that time 6 cop cars showed up for back up. She was a minor and drunk. All this time I tried to get ahold of my landlords but neither of them answered their phone. Anyhow, the landlord came home right when the tow truck showed up (6pm).

Good thing no one was in the yard or on the sidewalk. This could have ended VERY bad

  • Looked and sounds like a episode of 'Chicago PD"...wow....

(The key thing is the surprise...esp since it was stolen...too much drama for a hot day..but thanks for sharing...)

Any recommendations for tree service?

The city recently cut down the ash tree in front of our house because of ash borer infestation. The tree still looked healthy but I’m no arborist.

Can anyone recommend a tree service to treat our two remaining ash trees?

I spoke with the Bureau of Forestry and was assured that they would not remove these trees if they were recently treated.

  • If the trees are on the parkway - the city does treat them - but it seems it does not help - the city tries to keep them up as long as they are not dangerous....sooner or later they take them down - and replace them later in the year......

Best place to sell appliances,etc?

We've recently (almost!) completed a reno and have a few things to sell that are in good shape/not used (coin op W/D, pedestal sink, light fixture, etc) that seem like things a landlord or builder would be interested in. Is Craigslist still the best place for this type of thing? I have tried the 'marketplace' on Facebook somewhat recently too and didn't have any luck. Are there better apps or sites? I've heard a lot of them people just try to get you down to giving it to them for free on the apps... Thanks!

Is it legal for a scooter with an out of state plate to park on a permit only street?

I have a friend visiting who will be bringing a scooter here. i know you can park scooters on permit only streets without a zone sticker with an IL plate, but does the same apply to out of state plates?

Thanks!

  • You can only park a scoot in permit parking if you have a city of Chicago patking tag. It's a little circle that you put on license plate. City clerk sells them $40 I think

  • The "little circle" is the equivalent of the city sticker on the windshield of a car. It has nothing to do with parking. Motorcycles are exempt from zoned parking restrictions.

Too bad the city will overspend on tax incentives to attract companies but won't pay to bring some worldwide focus...

U.S., Mexico and Canada win joint bid for 2026 World Cup; Chicago won't be a host site
The World Cup is returning to the United States, and this time, Mexico and Canada are along for the wild ride. Chicago, however, will not be among the host cities. A North American joint bid won the rights Wednesday to host the 2026 edition of the celebrated soccer tournament, defeating Morocco and bouncing back from an unfathomable U.S.

  • That is true in hosting an entire event...hosting a game or two wouldn't have nearly the same scale of issues.

  • That is also more true when you have to create infrastructure. Chicago would not be creating any transportation or venue infrastructure. If anything it might speed along some backlogged transportation projects.

Sure it'd be overcrowded for a week or so...but I think it'd be worth the visibility and potential investment.

House cleaning help !

Anyone have a cleaning person...who isn't afraid of, and is careful with animals in the home. I really need some heavy work done. Scrubbing floors etc... I prefer a person, to a service....but would do a service if I have to...thank you

  • Not to direct you away from Normas but I use thumbtack.com for these types of projects. You describe the job and then you get a bunch of bids. Really convenient.

  • Are you looking for a regular person or just a one-time?

Dog Friendly Area in Humboldt Park - Application Status

Hi Neighbors,

This post is to notify you all that a steering committee have assembled and filed an application for a Dog Friendly Area (DFA) in Humboldt Park! Hi Neighbors,

This post is to notify you all that a steering committee have assembled and filed an application for a Dog Friendly Area (DFA) in Humboldt Park! We have the support of the park manager and the alderman, and there generally seems to be much support from neighbors, but to pull it off we'll need to show a lot of support from dog owners and non-dog owners in the neighborhood.

As some of you may know, we submitted an application at the end of last year, and it came back a few months later, denied not for lack of support or need, but because we simply asked for more land than the parks department maximum allowed for Dog Friendly Areas. With the huge area available in HP we thought it worth trying to break the rule on the premise that it could result in a vaster play area for dogs, and perhaps serve to attract more people to the park from other neighborhoods. We have resubmitted with a smaller designated area (15000 sq. ft.), and are hopeful.

Thanks to the community-minded trailblazers in other neighborhoods, the Parks Department has a fairly comprehensive website on Dog Friendly Areas. See this link:
http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/facilities/dog-friendly-areas/

If you scroll down there is another link after a few paragraphs, to procedures for establishing a Dog Friendly Area. Anyone interested should familiarize themselves with the process but in summary:

STEP 1. Assemble a steering committee
STEP 2. Communicate with appropriate authorities and establish a suitable location
STEP 3. File an application
STEP 4. If approved, petition neighbors for signatures (100 needed from both dog-owners and non-dog owners)
STEP 5. Conduct surveys of proposed area to determine potential impact, 4x over 1 year.
STEP 6. Raise $ and commit to at least 3 years of ongoing management.

We're in step 3 now, and looking for your support! Please reply below if you support having a Dog Friendly Area in Humboldt Park!

    http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com
  • We are there now! Places that have petitions available to sign are Archie’s Iowa Tavern, First Ascent, North Clybourn Group, and Boulevard Sports Lounge.

  • I support a dog park!! And I'm not a dog owner!

I have a PARROT at my bird feeder...

Not a parakeet, but a green parrot that is 12" long. I tried to take a picture but everything is green and it let me know that it wasn't interested. I'll figure out better food for it..

  • DianeW just nosey

Oooh, I'm so glad it's still around, and thank you so much, Kitty hop, for trying to help.

Have you tried regular old pet bird seed? Like unsalted sunflower seeds and unsalted safflower seeds? The bird might recognize that as food more so than fruit, In case it hasn't been exposed to a varied diet of fruit and veggies in it's previous home.

  • On my way to get some....

Shots fired at Grand and Richmond on 6/3 classified as Vandalism: Criminal Damage to Vehicle.

The police had Richmond blocked at Grand and were searching for shells with flashlights. I didn't see anything and then see this listed as vehicle damage. MAYBE a car was shot, but no mention of multiple shots fired? It occurred on the parade weekend, so we initially thought the shots were fireworks.

  • In this incident, a criminal idiot shot-up his girlfriends car. She reported a bad argument with him and witnesses describe a man that resembled him. The car was parked for the night near her home. Noone was in the car and multiple shots were fired directly into her door. This was not random.

Then the report was correct. Seeing that the offender was NOT identified, good luck with an arrest. If the boyfriend was identified, he would be charged under domestic violence laws that carry more weight than just criminal damage. Any gun crimes would probably never be made against the offender. Again, that is how Chicago kills gun crimes. When you hear the Mayor say gun crimes are down, it is more likely, reporting them is what is down while they are getting higher every day. I have seen videos of MANY shootings lately and police who answered the call did not make a report. In one case in front of my home, a witness who had dash cam video of an entire shooting with vehicle plates was told to go to the station where he lived with a copy! I say, thank the ACLU for that one. A lot of people on EB defend criminals and their criminal activities, very few support the police that place their lives on the line to protect us. We are on our own and WE are to blame for it. Watch out everyone and be safe.

Does anyone have a speed heater/silent paint remover they'd be willing to rent?

We're removing tons of paint from our new/old two-flat, and are interested in trying an infrared paint removal system. The reviews seem mixed, so we'd love to try it out before making the purchase. Would anyone in the area have one they'd be willing to rent out for a day or two?

Thanks!

  • How did the speedheater work? Any chance you'd be willing to rent it out? We just bought a bungalow and have quite a bit of paint removal ahead of us and are trying to find the best approach - I found this post while searching to find a local source to rent.

    Thanks!

BOOKKEEPER needed

Hi neighbors-
I am looking for a bookkeeper and a background in real estate would be a bonus. This individual needs to be able to enter receipts/invoices into an exisiting spreadsheet and help organize things between a few properties. This data entry would happen inside my Logan Square home and not an office. I estimate it would take 1-2 weeks initially to catch up and 1-2 days monthly to maintain.

Thanks in advance.
