  • Ixcateco Grill in Albany Park, makes me hungry just thinking about the place. Asedero's is really good too but the service is abysmal

  • El Asadero on Montrose across from Welles park off of Lincoln avenue. They only take cash. The burritos are good partly because the meat has that charcoal broiled taste. My family has been going to this place for a good 20 years or more.

Outdoor fire pits in Logan square ?

I was just wondering is it illegal to have a portable fire pit in my backyard. I use a cast iron stove in my backyard

  • You just need a mesh cover on it, any store-bought one is fine. We use one in our yard.

2/24 2:30 p.m. cooper's hawk in trees in the tastee freez alley

He was in a tree on the south end of the block, giving the repeated yak yak laughing mating call --- (it's a bit early, for that, isn't it?) He then flew north down the alley toward tastee freez.
pretty cool. Here's what the call sounded like, if you missed it.

DNAInfo coming back?

I am thrilled to read about the public radio push to acquire and re-launch DNAInfo and Gothamist. I don't see anything new on DNAInfo, but it's all still very new. Crossed fingers that it will come back! https://www.wired.com/story/gothamist-dcist-laist-return-wnyc-public-radio/

Gothamist Lives, Thanks to a Boost From Public Radio
After billionaire Joe Ricketts announced the shuttering of local news organizations Gothamist and DNAInfo last fall, readers across the country mourned the loss of the beloved sites, and worried about the vulnerability of journalism in the digital age.

Half Italian Closing

May be old news for some, but just found out that Half Italian is closing in March (via their Facebook page). This is very sad considering this was one of my first spots I went to for a quick (and amazing!) sandwich when I moved to the area. Hope we can have something fill the gap in the future.

  • This is so sad! I live a block away and go there regularly for some fresh pasta or something from the deli. I hope they're able to move to a more affordable location.

  • Agreed. Parts and Labor was sad too.

Rosie's Sidekick?

Could it be? A new Italian Sandwich Shop about to open at 2610 N. California. Rosie's Sidekick. At least that's what the note on the window says- And they do have this nifty sign as pictured!

  • @Jenny! That's great! I looked at the web site for Rosie's Sidekick. You would think they were open based on that. Very confusing.

  • Pipeworks is coming soon. They haven't started building yet. There was a community meeting last year when they presented their design ideas. They will have food.

Re: Rosie, it is confusing. The website gave me the impression they are open, taking online orders and it has hours posted. Looks very cheery. I hope they get a vegan sandwich or ones with that option. People will be asking for that. It's nice they have a veg. soup.

Sleeping guy on Cortland

Anybody know what the deal is with the sleeping guy on Cortland and Mozart? The cops tell him to move and then he comes back. He is a Hispanic man in his 30s with a large black backpack. He tends to wander around the neighborhood aimlessly and laugh maniacally at things that are not there. I’m also convinced he was in my back yard today. But that’s another story in itself...

  • Agreed..I have a bag I give out with socks, gloves, food, etc and there are quarters & a few dollars in it. The gift card work well.I also pick up the cost for those in dollar stores buying ..usually hygiene products.
We all need to research services but some won't stay in them because they don't feel safe.
    (Back to elected officials again...)

  • Was he in the military? They can get housing.

  • Spaulding & Schubert buildings have been a problem for years. Kedzie/George is really bad as well.

  • If it’s the same guys, they’re not talking. From the Tribune

About 4:15 p.m. on the Northwest Side, two men were found shot in a car in the 2600 block of North Kimball Avenue in the Logan Square neighborhood, according to police. A 22-year-old man shot in the right leg was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, while a 19-year-old man also shot in the right leg was taken to Norwegian American Hospital. Their conditions were stabilized, according to police. The two were being uncooperative with investigators.

Ron Onesti: I caught 'Saturday Night Fever'
People today know me pretty much as a rocker, but there was a fleeting moment when I was almost forced to "pick a team" -- disco or rock. It was a difficult time for me, as I was just a sophomore in high school when "Saturday Night Fever" came out in 1977.

Tightening power lines

Has anyone ever had the power lines that run over their property “tightened”? Some run diagonally across my yard and are saggy - not dangerously so, but they’re an eyesore from our bedroom window and may impact some potential plans for our yard. I’ve read across the internet that some people have gotten the power company to do this for free... seems too good to be true for Chicago. Curious on the process to do this as well as price. Thanks!

Is this your cat?

Hi - walking the dog tonight 2/12 my husband came upon a really friendly grey cat around Drake and Schubert. No collar, both ears intact. I read a post from August with a description of a similar cat. Is this yours?

  • Dhe

Thanks for posting! My heart did jump when I thought it was my cat. I believe someone befriended my cat and took her in.
Please remind people that a tipped ear on a cat means they are spoken for 😀

  • A tipped ear only means it was trapped, spayed/neutered, vaccinated at the time (which may have since expired), likely microchipped and then released. It doesn't indicate if a cat is being cared for. Some may be tame, so it'd be great to help find a forever home.

Need good roofer

I need to find a capable and honest roofer! The majority of my roof is fine, but the roof over my foyer has a leak that I've paid to have fixed twice to no avail. I need an honest roofer who's not going to try to get me to get a whole new roof (which I can't afford right now), but who's also savvy enough to actually figure out this issue!
Anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks-

  • Melissa Stanley local realtor and business onwer

Call Pablo 708-574-2207 he is great and very reasonable. Just remember that water seeks the lowest point so the leak could be coming from another part of the roof. I know for experience that finding a leak is not easy and sometime you just have to re-do the roof. Sorry but it is true.

  • Try Nyberg Exteriors. Great reviews, fixed my vent and didn't try to sell on replacing the entire roof. https://www.yelp.com/biz/nyberg-exteriors-chicago

And what part of companies relocating don't you get?

When I was in high school, my dad's employer moved to Glenview, so we did too. I moved back to the city when I started college.

While about half moved for employment reasons, the rest were mostly retirees or moving closer to family.

I'm not defending politicians, or saying that government debt isn't a factor, but they're not the reasons being given to the moving companies.

If the Republicans offered good candidates, I'd vote for them. But the GOP is so incompetent that a Neo-Nazi is running unopposed in the primary. Rauner's opponent is ultra-conservative, so not much choice there.

I looked at the sample Republican ballot, there are 10 "no candidate" positions listed (not including judges). By contrast, the Democratic ballot has only one.

How do you vote for change when there's no one to vote for?

  • Since I already stated that I am in the process of moving a company, I can tell you for certain....I get it. way more than most.

This is what happens when you cut off your nose to spite your face. Under no instance should a not for profit with a bankruptcy in process be trusted with a permit for a parade or event. Vendors deserve to know.

A few years off and a redefinition of the event on a smaller, safer scale would be a smart move to declare to the court, as well. It's called a good faith proposal.

Worms in meat at Tony's Fresh food at Fullerton and Central Park

Please do not shop at Tony's finer food. There are worms in the meat. The management does not want to deal with it. Because I sent Lorena without a receipt.

Tony's Fresh Market does not take this situation seriously.

I love to try everything available without having to buy an entire drink in order to do so. Would free samples be more ideal for me as a customer? Sure. Would it be viable (if I want to try everything) for the business to do so? Nope. I'll give 'em a go.

Missing white husky - in Bucktown/Wicker Park/Logan Square

Hi, everyone. Earlier tonight, our dog ran out through out front gate. He is a male, all white husky; responds to Yukon and was last wearing a blue harness. He is not chipped. We live by Western and Charleston, but he's a runner by nature so I'm not sure how far he would've gone by now.

I am not sure how this works, but if anyone has any information please send a message. My poor boy is out in the cold alone. I need him to come back home.
