252 BUILDING VIOLATIONS?!

Did you see today's (5/26) list of building violations on EveryBlock Daily Digest?!

It looks like the city is running a massive building inspection sweep on the NW side. Anyone affected by of have info on this?

  • The one property with most of the violations appears to be under contract, so wondering if a reinspection by the city on an open permit issue led to a bonanza of violations?

a_m_b OR, the building is being sold because of the violations (and this was the purpose of a task force inspection report) I have no specific knowledge.

Hi everyone. Hoping to get some help here.

Our neighbor has a tree in his backyard that has gotten really big. It's trunk is busting through the fence separating our property and the roots are cracking the concrete on our side. Also, the branches are hanging over way onto our side.

We aren't really close with our neighbor but we get along fine. We'd like to keep good relations but wanted to know what the rules are for this kind of situation. We don't want to ask either him of us to take on more than the required responsibility.

Ideally, the tree would be removed, but at least the trimming of all the branches on our side would be done.

Does anyone know the current laws on this? Who pays for these things? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

  • Is it possible to defer to natural authority and just adapt to the tree being there? I am a part owner of a gigantic catalpa tree that encroached on my yard and pavement so we just gave up trying to control it. We enjoy the beauty of the tree and the shade it provides. If you try to be the boss and cut the roots, it may become very sad and die and fall on your house for revenge.

  • Thanks all!

There aren't any dead branches that I can see. The only way it could be a hazard is in that concrete on our walkway is not only cracking but raising and jutting up in spots so that someone could easily trip. (That wasn't clear in my first post)...

(That wasn't clear in my first post) Don't know if that counts as an actionable hazard though...

There's no room to move the walkway, unfortunately, @NW-Sider or I would agree with your idea.

I'll check with an arborist for sure. If you all have any recommendations, please pass them along. But knowing all this will make it easier to have the conversation with our neighbor.

This is a benefit for the all breed dog rescue clinic "One Tail At A Time."

Adding to the already considerable list of beer festivals that will be tapping kegs in Chicago this summer, Lagunitas Brewing Company announced the return of its annual Beer Circus this morning. Previously, the event took place in the parking lot of Lagunitas' enormous brewing facility in Lawndale, but this year's edition of the one-day festival will move a few blocks west to Douglas Park—the same park that now hosts Riot Fest.

According to Lagunitas communications coordinator Betsy Gregg, the brewery decided that the Beer Circus had outgrown its parking lot but wanted to keep it in the neighborhood. The move to Douglas Park will allow the event to increase its capacity and provide more space for entertainment, while offering even more room to grow in the coming years.

The Chicago edition of the Lagunitas Beer Circus will set up in Douglas Park on Saturday, August 11 from noon to 5pm, bringing along a lineup of bands, burlesque performers, sideshow acts and aerialists. Attendees will also be able to enjoy plenty of Lagunitas beer, including some rare limited releases—each $40 ticket includes one free pour. Of course, more beer will be available for purchase, with a portion of proceeds benefitting local all-breed dog rescue One Tail at a Time.

Tickets for the Beer Circus will go on sale May 21 via the Lagunitas website. If you want to spend a summer afternoon enjoying the brewery's hop-filled concoctions in a park, you'll need to act fast.

House Break-In on Spaulding

Yesterday at 1:41 pm, an unknown person was caught on video entering my apartment at 1929 N Spaulding. Nothing was taken besides the television remote batteries, but the person was wearing a sweatshirt and big pants, they possibly had a ponytail. Keep alert!

  • Wait? All they took are batteries? Did I miss something? Are batteries the new tide pods?

  • Maybe he was binge-watching The Handmaid's Tale and the remote went dead? That might drive someone to commit crime...

Appliance Repair

Hello Neighbors - I'm looking for an honest and reliable company or repair person to fix some household appliances (refrigerator ice-maker and leaky washing machine). I appreciate all recommendations. The last folks I used seem to include a lot of extra charges. Thanks!

  • Hi Bellhome- we used Bobby at The Fix-it guy. 773) 974-8735 We like him... he fixed our Ice-maker and then a couple months later fixed our dishwasher, which had kind of dual problem and he fixed the second for free (just charged for parts). He's knowledgable and a nice guy.

  • Tomorrow is another day Happy resident of North Park Village

Ditto for The Fix-it Guy! Has repaired several appliances. When he fixed a washer, said we would need a new one when it went. When he says he has to get a part and will call when he gets it, he does. Says when he will be there, and he is. He is a guy I can work with, ask questions of, and explains what the problem is.

WOW, right on the money MAC. Sorry, did not want to start a war on your thread. I have raised my family here and when I moved in this ILLEGAL loud music NEVER HAPPENED! The park was so dangerous, no one would dare to risk injury to do so. Not until after gentrifers worked to make the park safe again for families and the year after Riot Fest was kicked out of the park did this group appear. Now, more and more groups are using the park, setting up illegal amp.s and blaring music for hours disturbing the entire neighborhood when they do. The Alderman's people video taped the East side group after a shooting in the middle on the day the first year they took over the park. They recorded drug smoking, alcohol drinking, loud music and park grounds being destroyed by vehicles on the grass and tearing up the pavement. Sorry to hear that yet another group has appeared to disturb every ones peace on the West side of the park. Our Alderman has done nothing but make the park unfriendly to families and it is up to us, voters who live here. We must solve this problem on our own in this February's election because no one else will help us. Good luck, see you on election day.

  • And, just to be clear, I wasn't commenting one way or other on the music, just passing along info. (Music at the park doesn't bother me when I visit... but then I don't live right next to it!).

Mailbox Regulations?

Does anyone know if there are regulations for mailboxs? Today my husband was approached by our mail lady. She told him that our block has too many stairs and that we are required to have our mailbox mounted to our wrought iron fence instead of our house. Just wondering if anyone has heard of this or anything similar to this. I found some regulations on the usps website but nothing to answer my question. My mailbox is easily accessible, it just located on my front porch up 8 steps.

Will just lead to you losing all of your packages and correspondence till the end of time, and no, the home office will not do anything about it. Just ignore it and continue on with life and if she brings it up again just tell her sweetly that you called USPS to see what the exact requirements were and they told you that you didn't have to do it, but that you understand her concerns and vaguely suggest you might plan to get around to it at some point...and then leave it be.

  • Artist girl Artist and Muscian

It's true that if you get on the postal worker's wrong side you may get missing packages, etc. And it is true that USPS doesn't seem to care and usually doesn't do anything about mail problems, unless they get called out about it on the news.

The rise and fall of community policing in Chicago

Really good article. Thank you for sharing.

Community involvement is key. We will never have enough police to curb crime. We have to be the eyes and ears of the police, help them. That's the only way. It's tragic that the black community generally under-reports crime out of fear of retaliation. That, I think, is one of the biggest obstacles.

And if police go under cover or act like they are residents of a neighborhood that is terrorized by gang activities and these officers make arrests you have lawyers who will represent the suspects and go before a judge and proclaim that this is a form of entrapment the judge then buys into it and the bangers that were arrested are right back out on the street and this is justice.

Recs for Repair to Old (ca. 1890s) Metal-Clad Turret Window?

Hi all:

Our house has an old turret-like corner bay window, dating, as best as we can tell, from approximately the 1890s. It is clad in a kind of metal sheeting, which has been successively painted over the years. A part of the structure was damaged over the winter by ice, and I'm looking for someone who has some experience with vintage ornamental structures like this to come out and assess what we need to do to fix it.

If anyone has any recommendations, please share! Much appreciated.

Thanks.

Drywall repair and painting - recommendations?

Hi, neighbors! We sustained water damage from the heavy snow and a bad roof over the winter. We're just about done with our roof repairs. (Thanks to all the great recommendations on here, we went with Nyberg Exteriors and have been pleased with their service and professionalism.) Now that the roof is fixed, we need to get the interior drywall on a few ceilings and walls repaired/replaced and painted. Any recommendations from good, honest contractors (who are licensed and bonded)? We haven't been impressed with the ones recommended by our insurance company. Many thanks in advance!

Just wondering if he has a business website or anything. I like to do some digging around before cold calling. Did he have a business name?

    Thanks

When I moved into Humboldt Park, my block had two apartment buildings and a building that had a few stores in it. There were six vacant lots to the North and then the building containing the stores was leveled bringing the total of vacant lots to seven out of nine lots. The neighborhood was crime ridden and gang violence was a daily occurrence. Neighbors got together and started a community garden on several of the lots to clean up the neighborhood. Gang bangers could no longer use the lots for their criminal actively. Shortly after, developers started purchasing the lots. I am happy to announce that all the vacant lots are gone and tended to as of this month. One developer purchased two lots and built single family homes on them and great people moved in. Now, another developer has purchased the last four lots and built two more single family homes. One home sold for 619K with a great new family. The other was up for sale for 1.2 MILLION until the developer moved his family into it. The last two lots along side of the developers home is now being landscaped as a beautiful addition to his home. After the neighborhood was flooded with low income projects, it is great to see single family homes being built with home ownership because that is what truly stabilizes a community. I am so happy to be apart of bringing back life to Humboldt Park and welcome all new comers that want to make the 720 acres of the park family friendly again.

awww. i hoped so much that it wasn't a scam, but it was. two days before xmas, frantic woman in a van, waves me over (i am gassing up at opposite pump) 'do you speak english?" yes. "thank god." story about dying dad in hospital, tank on e, needs gas, let me take your number and i'll pay you back. blah blah blah. i swiped my card for her on the pump and left. i knew it was probably a scam. thought, if she just charges the 30 bucks she really needs to get somewhere, it's legit. if she fills it up to 60, it's a scam. well, charge card showed 59 bucks. tonight, day after new years day, another woman (different, yet could have been the first one's mom- both were equally frantic and articulate...i admire their rehearsal skills if nothing else)in a suv waves me over (i'm on foot this time, but same gas station at calf and armitage.) "do you speak english -- thank god." same EXACT script. her mother's in northwestern, card is over-extended, blah blah blah. i guess word got around that it worked, so the scammers are working it. so adjust your need to respond (if any) accordingly. (by the way, i gave the second scammer the loose bills in my purse. it's a REALLY cold day, and she took the time to give me an education. that's always appreciated.)

Looking for year round babysitter

Hello! My husband and I are seeking a sitter for our two daughters, a 4 year-old and 1 year-old. Ideally, our sitter would be able to work 8-10 hours per week; preferred days are Wednesdays and then either Tuesday or Thursday, timeframe flexibly around 3-7PM. Any reccomendayions would be awesome. Summer only need not apply. 15/hr.
