Dibs

Born and raised in Chicago.Ive seen an ironing board out there.

  • If the city doesn't come by to pick up your empty trash bags, maybe the spring winds will catch them and "distribute" them on other peoples' front lawns, shrubbery, and even back yards. Thank you. One of my favorite pastimes is picking up other peoples' garbage--in fact, I look forward to the opportunity.

  • So glad the pouring rain today is not snow.... I can't stand any more bickering about dibs... :-)

Portage Theater

I heard it was going to close. However the website shows bookings through April I walked by there tonight and everything has been stripped from the lobby..the chandelier, the vintage movie posters, the concession stand...all gone.

I used to go to the Portage with the family to see Christmas Story .They had a guy that played an organ that resembled the old Chicago Stadium organ only much smaller. He played carols before the movie started and the words were put on the screen for sing along.

Michael, you can still attend these kind of events. The Chicago Film Society (previously the NWCFS who had a home for several years at the Portage) now holds their classic screenings at the NEIU campus. The organist from the Portage plays all the silent cinema accompaniment for the Silent Chicago Film Society which holds silent movie screenings at theaters across the city and burbs. Also, the Park Ridge Classic Film Group regularly schedules classic screenings with the organist from the Portage doing the prelude music. It was great when we had these kind of family friendly events right here nearby at the Portage or Patio, but since that's not going to happen under the present management of the 2 venues, we go elsewhere.

Di's Den Burglary

I just saw in the Nadig news that Di's Den was burglarized Sunday night. I live on that block and hadn't heard about this. It sounded very professionally done. Pretty scary.

  • Do you have a link?

Looking for recommendations

Looking for someone to install new drywall in our small coat closet in our bungalow. Located in north Montclair. Must be reliable.

  • Home advisor is a great place.

  • PennyPenguin Chillin' out on EB

So is Angie's List and Yelp! and Google, and other sites w/ reviews.

  • I second Home Advisors. I have people but they are all so busy I can't get them to call me back. So I went to Home Advisors. You tell them what you need and then they send 3 people or companies to you. They are all vetted. The painter I got was good.

How come Harwood Heights and Norridge don't have these problems

Curious if the "Pepe" in the last name is a reference to Pepe the Frog - the bizarre mascot adopted by the Alt-right? If so, it's not surprising they brushed up against some community guidelines prohibiting hateful speech. Also possible they were considered duplicate accounts for the same person - which would get both accounts closed down. If it's unjust, they can contact Everyblock and make their case. Similar issues have come up on other social media sites. I doubt there is any conspiracy here or this thread would have been closed down.

Portage Park's Brgrbelly trims prices to celebrate tax overhaul
Appetite has aligned with altruism in an enterprise familiar to many Portage Park-area residents run next level by Steve and Nicole O'Brien. In a unique gesture celebrating the federal tax cut, the family-owned Brgrbelly restaurant opted to slash prices by 20 percent starting Feb., reducing all menu items to the original prices listed on the restaurant's opening day in 2013.

And also I recommend their other joint, Tipsy Cow. Customer-service level is off the charts. Not sure how, but we got our meal for more than half off. Totally unexpected. We mentioned a Facebook promotion for a buy one entree get one free, and they also a half-price appetizer promotion (or something similar). Seriously, when we saw the final bill, I almost choked on my delicious nachos.

Security Camera's - Looking to purchase and would like suggestions

Hi Everyone,
I am looking to buy security camera's....last summer someone posted on this site that they purchased some from Amazon that they felt were good and at a good price. I cant seem to find the post.
Any suggestions? I seen someone post that they have them with flood lights, pros/cons?
Thanks you in advance for suggestions.

  • Spam Alert Don't be selling your used junk up in here, okay?

Meh, okay, let me then remove that Thumb Up I gave you in thanks for your earlier explanation of what you were trying to point out......There! I suited myself.

  • Waveland_5400 Retired and loving it!

Remember friends.... cameras are not security. In the security world there are preventative controls (alarms, locks, etc) and detective controls (cameras). You might want to consider preventing a crime as opposed to seeing what happens after the fact. Just sayin......

I have seven Blink cameras in my house and garage but I consider my alarm the most important part of my home security.

Fence codes in Chicago`

Does anyone know the height limit for fences between houses in Chicago. It says that I can install a fence over 5 feet that is 'open construction', but I can't seem to find a definition for open construction in any of the Chicago resources.

I'm not concerned about permitting, I just need to know the height limit and what constitutes 'open construction'.

Anyone have any resources to share?

  • OParker Native Chicagoan

Don't forget to call DIGGER before digging post holes.

  • I would also suggest looking at your survey to make sure the fence is where it belongs if you are replacing an existing fence. If you are putting up a new fence get a staked survey.

Might this be a misuse of Department resources for political purposes?
•Alderman Arena's office filed a CR number against any officer that openly opposed his housing development on his Facebook page. Leslie Perkins who is employed by Alderman Arena's office, is the complainant on the CR#.

Arena's office claims that the officers who opposed low income housing, on the Alderman's Facebook Page, are racist. Alderman Arena allowed, and most likely encouraged, his paid protestors to openly threaten law enforcement officers on his City endorsed Facebook Page. Alderman Arena also allowed community members to be threatened, harassed and stalked by his henchmen if they did not support his agenda. Even officers who kept their profession hidden and used screen names, were not safe from the wrath of Alderman Arena.

The Alderman had his staff run the plates of individuals who were present at gatherings opposing his development, get their information and run it through a city data base to find out if they are police officers. The CR number names numerous officers, alleging they made "racially charged comments against low income housing." Anyone who made a negative comment concerning Arenas housing projects, even if it was just comments concerning overcrowding, were labeled racist by Arena, his wife and his paid protestors. Numerous individuals who were threatened on his Facebook Page, a page that he controls and content he is responsible for, contacted the Alderman's office through phone, email and social media, all of which went unanswered.

Even if Arena didn't make the threats against law enforcement, he obviously condones it since he never deleted them from his social media, nor did he condemn them. These officers voiced their concerns as community members, not police officers. Now that the community has spoken and Alderman Arena has been denied state funding for his housing project, he needs someone to blame and who better than the police.

  • Weebis Politically Incorrect Thought Criminal

hey, SCC, you demand evidence of paid protestors. How about providing some evidence of these racist cops and firefighters.

On the record statements, video tape, or audio tape.

    Anything??

Anywhere near Jeff Terminal is REALLY bad. Just be alert, and if you see one, make noise, yell at them. They will run the other way. Just an FYI. I watched them for over an hour or two around 6 pm Tonite in my alley. Working on my car. They don't want to be around people. So, respect them and rodent problem will be a thing of the past. They can hang in my alley all they want. I welcome them, we need them people, so don't get crazy. Just watch your small animals, as you should in the first place.

Hey Everyone,

I’m looking to order unicorn donuts for an upcoming party but haven’t been able to track any down. Anyone know of a place that makes them or would accept special orders for such an item? Does not need to be in the Portage Park area directly.

Thanks in advance!
