so why give it up? surely some of you know about reddit.com. we can create a sub-reddit just for us. if we ALL hopped over to a new sub-reddit, then we wouldn't have to lose a thing. we could retain our anonymity. all we need are some basic posting rules and a few moderators to oversee it. i'm happy to volunteer to get us started but would certainly appreciate some input from the EB regulars.

i haven't thought out the details, because i know we are all from different neighborhoods...but calling it chicago-northsiders or something comes to mind. there are already a couple of NWside sub-reddits, but they are vastly underused. we could at least just start one and see what happens.

your thoughts?

  • I've never posted to reddit before, I guess now is finally the time. Thanks everyone for sharing the info and with helping organize.

Monarch Butterflies need "Common Milkweed"

For anyone interested in helping restore Monarchs by planting milkweed; not all milkweed offers full life-cycle Monarch support (not all gardeners/naturalists know the distinction). All types of milkweed will attract pollinators/butterflies.
But only Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) supports the full Monarch lifecycle; as the necessary food source for caterpillars of the Monarch butterfly that feast on its leaves.

Never saw the visitor to our garden, but we found its caterpillars! (pic)

Ald. Arena pledges to bring 50 CHA units to the ward
by BRIAN NADIG Alderman John Arena (45th) has pledged to bring 50 Chicago Housing Authority-sponsored apartments to the 45th Ward by the end of his term in the spring of 2019. Arena and six other aldermen recently signed the pledge as part of an effort that they say will help end segregation on the North and Northwest Side.

From The Chicago Reporter:"How aldermen maintain segregation in Chicago" By Kate Walz and Patricia Fron (Excerpt):"This patchwork of zoning control has negatively altered the landscape of the city by diminishing land area available for multifamily development or developments containing multiple housing units. By reducing allowable density, housing supply is constricted, raising not only housing cost—particularly rents—but land value as well, much to the detriment of affordable housing development. Since 1970, the developable density of over 5,000 acres of Chicago’s land has been reduced by downzoning or landmarking. And today, just 20 percent of the city’s land is currently zoned for multifamily housing, and it is concentrated outside of predominantly white areas, with 75 percent of multifamily zoned land located outside of majority white wards.

These conditions force housing developers to navigate varied and complex ward-level systems, and on the North and Northwest sides of the city often mean that housing proposals that include affordable units, family units, and rental units will not get the green light. Without aldermanic approval, housing proposals are effectively dead because aldermen wield veto power over access to city funds. Applications for the city’s multifamily loan program must be accompanied by a letter of aldermanic support. If there is no chance they will receive an alderman’s blessing, many developers report not bothering to apply for financing from the city.

Unconstrained control over zoning, combined with the ability to influence and approve of individual housing developments, has resulted in haphazard and imbalanced affordable housing development. Over the past 50 years, predominantly white areas have constructed just 2 percent the city’s new affordable multifamily housing while containing 25 percent of the city’s multifamily zoned land.",FROM:https://www.chicagoreporter.com/how-aldermen-maintain-segregation-in-chicago/

Fischman Public House

Anyone go to Fischman Public House at 4058 N. Milwaukee in Portage Park yet? I remember going to the original Fischman's Bar quite a bit when it was near Hoyne Bank before the bar closed a while back. Gus was the owner then, and I hear his Public House is a smash hit!

The food is impressive too! Gus and crew provide a slightly upscale take on bar plates. Plenty of vegetarian options too! But the star of the show are the cheese curds. Out of this world.
What I like about it besides the beer and food is that they are family-friendly.
I see a lot of families eating there.
I loved the old Fischman bar but the new place is even better.

I just used it a couple months ago on highly varnished, very dark and very tarter/nicotine covered pine paneling with at least 100 years of heavy smokers in the house. It is really expensive and a little messy since it's almost the consistency of skim milk but it is the best product for maximum adherence, minimum/no bleed through, stink elimination and quick drying (<40 mins for starting with the actual paint you want to use). I didn't even have to wash the walls or sand them at all. 1 gallon got me through a 15 x 30' room with some to spare for use on other things. A few months later and my ultra-pale yellow shows no bleed through whatsoever and there is absolutely no stale smoke smell (or any smell at all, even from the paint, for that matter).

    Good luck!

Street repavement question

Anyone know what the deal is with 4800 and 4900 block of Warwick street repavement? They had signs up for no parking the 5th-11th. They broke up the street. When I returned home from a trip yesterday, the 13th, I was expecting a new paved street, however it was just how I left it. The signs are the old signs as well, so wondering why it stopped and when it will be finished.

  • You know how the city works. Look how long it took them to finish Cicero. Hopefully it will be done soon.

  • Agnes Groeper Major of Major

We have suffered the repaving problem for years to get the 2400 and 2700 blocks of N Mango repaved. Would you believe they did 2500 and 2600 which were cement and skipped 2400 and 2700, Whoever repaved Schubert from Central to Austin should be sued, It was a bad job to start with and is already cracking up, We need more housewives in City government to clean up the mess Any volunteers?

  • Nessuno Government Blank Check.

Oriole between Belmont and Forest Preserve Dr. is plain concrete and has lasted for years! Of course, they don't wanna build them all that way. There would be no busy work for the over paid city employees.

Hello

These property lines drive a Chicago homeowner crazy. I told my neighbor I will be doing some tuckpointing work on the west side of my property (on their yard side) later this summer. My chimney protrudes out approx 4 inches on that side which also coincides with MY property line. My neighbor then goes ahead and plants veggie plants directly against my building with chicken wire fencing obstructing where tuckpointing is needed. The Alderman has indicated that I would need to get a R/E attorney and apply for a temporary easement order with the CofC to gain access. How ridiculous is this. All because of some plants on MY property line.
Anyone have any suggestions, please give me a holler. Thanks in advance!

  • You should have a survey along with your property papers. That survey will give dimensions from your house to your property line.I would guess that the narrow strip of land next to your house where they planted is actually your property. I does not matter where the fence is .
A contractor will probably erect a scaffold to do the work. That can be done in such a way as to not disturb the plantings. Protection can be do so as to protect the plants from dust and debris.

Yes, they are on my property. I have a plat survey and it indicates that my property line is 11 5/8 inches out from the building. I'll use this if needed in the event the neighbor tries to justify his plants being placed there.

The building tuckpointing is needed at the bottom sections of the building, thus, the plants are obstructing the part that needs access on the lower part. I think there may be room if the contractor decides to pull the plants back with a strap of some kind to shift them forward away from the building without damaging them. This all depends on how cooperative the neighbor is. I have found they say one thing, then do something different. We shall see. Thanks for your comment!

I am a single GWM who moved to Jeff Park from Bucktown a few years back and am having a tough time finding any gay identity here. There must be gay men in Jeff and Portage Park tired of the craziness of the Boystown scene and desire true friendships here on the Northwest Side!

My friendship base kinda wained over the years and would love to establish something healthy and enduring. I'm 50, sincere, discrete, professionally employed and have a really warped, fun sense of humor.

So, let's get together and share great conversation, food and friendship! Life is too short not to!

Prohibition does not prevent people from pursuing the thrills and vices they wish to pursue. It only makes the pursuit thereof more dangerous and harmful to the users and those around them.

The only solution I can see for this problem is to bring it out into the open. Have the Aldermen, city, fire and police organize community supervised fireworks shows. Get it out of the back alleys, where debris showers on the yard and clogs the drains and lands in gutters full of dry tinder. Bring neighbors together to talk to one another, socialize, and use and enjoy fireworks as safely as we can. Teach safety and responsibility. Set up in the park, on the baseball field, and bring along a dumpster and have a cookout on the 5th with rakes, bags and trash pickers to clean up.

That way most of the activity can be contained and moderated, and the calls to 911 can better address those that still insist on polluting, disturbing the police, and creating hazards in our alleys.

  • Some people just cannot resist the thrill of setting off forbidden fireworks. It's like a little kid thing. If it becomes legal and controlled it may just lose its charm. However, the danger, the noise and the pollution will remain.

Motorcycle Running Wild?

Early this Sunday morning from around 3 - 4 am, I heard a motorcycle or motorcycles racing around the streets somewhere around Monitor, Menard and Cullom (4200 N, 5700 W). While I could not see what was making the noise, I could hear it.

Did anyone else in the area notice this too?

Not sure what to do since I could not call the police and give them specifics.

Thanks.

My thanks to everyone who made a comment and I appreciate the "thumbs up" notices.

Our family loves living in Portage Park. And it's still a relatively safe community compared to much of Chicago.

To help keep it that way, I would encourage all of us to consider:

    1. Calling the police for obvious activities they should address (e.g. people doing drugs in their cars, sitting on residential areas in cars playing loud music at night)

    2. When you see graffiti on your block (e.g. even on back of street signs) call or use an online form to get it cleaned up.

    3. When you have an ongoing issue where calling 911 might not be appropriate (e.g. the bad folks are not around long enough for the police to deal with them or fireworks going off two weeks before or after July 4th) call the District 16 Caps office (312) 742-4521 and ask them how to handle these concerning, yet not alarming matters.

I've done all three of the above, more time than I would like. However, it does seem to work.

    Thanks.

Recycling

To the person in the condo who loaded up our two recycling cans with their junk (A lot of which was not recyclable): We took all that stuff and placed in our garbage bins that were picked up by the city today.

It was strangely statisfying. Also, we know who you are.

  • Penelope - perhaps you meant to respond to another thread - but using a hand held fan to move the flies away from your milkweedworks quite well. I use a large 'dance prop' fan.

THE POINT "The Point"

Does anyone know the general feelings from the community regarding the senior housing project? Were there more neighbors for or against this idea?

  • Daniel D

"Wait until people realize that the Sears building was full of lead based paint and asbestos when it was built. There's probably going to be a second, bigger hole in Six Corners soon."

Ooh, good call. This should be interesting.

  • There are great breakfast places in the area! We love Nick's Hi Ho which is a little south of Six Corners. Burgundy is great too on Irving. Also, don't forget Fannie's - she is great because the food changes often. We ate at Fischmans and the food was fantastic - try the avocado bomb and the PBJ with bacon!

DA(M)N RYAN SHUTDOWN 2018

Pfleger gives no quarter to those who deny his parishioners' peaceful demand for attention to this most important issue.

Chicago Police Dept. Chief Eddie Johnson is the hero of the day - He parted the Red Sea of "red tape" of politics & legal BS by asserting his higher jurisdiction over defending "the People" in the march to protect them against harm & to insure the People's message is heard and all are safe. While the State Police may have the duty to protect the highway - he had a higher sworn duty to protect the People themselves.

In the end not one person was arrested. In the end not one person acted in a non-peaceful way. This was all accomplished without a single permit application or issuance.

Videos from WGN-TV, which covered the event, show fist-bumps & hugs abounded between the marchers & Chicago police rank & file members who stood alongside to protect citizens in their right to be civil disobediants...

At least for TODAY, the Chicago Police Department and the People of Chicago were finally on the same side against the war-mongers who try to divide them!

THIS IS NOT THE 1968 DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION - HALLELUJAH!

Mayor Rahm Emanuel was very "late to the party". His previous comments showed his opposition to this march. Does this show his lack of backbone or political worries as his underlings take the lead on the inevitable?

Illinois state politicians in Springfield (democrats and republicans) continue to be “officially” silent before and in the wake of this peaceful protest march.

Next up... Who’s gonna vote for whom?

Yes Craig, it was "one sided" (only the Northbound lanes) -Wink!

  • OParker Native Chicagoan

political hoi polli . getting close to election..schools are getting attention, PD is getting officers and suddenly Rahm believes people have a right to protest. As I recall Rahm was the one to push rulings to prevent people from marching and protest downtown because it was some type of health/safety issue. He needs to be removed..time is up ...before we end up with another 20 year Daley that totally sells us out and then jumps ship.

Puppy guidance sought

I will be getting an 8 week old Goldendoodle soon. It has been 40 years since I have had a dog. Living alone, I am assuming I need to crate train from the beginning. Having said that, what are thoughts about the pup climbing on furniture and sleeping in my bed?

I know I am going to need help on the training end. What are your experiences with obedience training classes and/ or hiring a trainer to come to the house. And, how about selecting a vet?

Puppies do not have eight hour bladders. You need to get up during the night to successfully housebreak them. The crate is to contain them at night, during the day when they cannot be supervised, it is their safe space. You don't want them to view a crate as a bathroom and bedroom. They should view the crate as their den and safe space. Dogs don't use their den as a bathroom. http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/dogs/tips/crate_training.html

    https://www.labradortraininghq.com/labrador-training/what-size-dog-crate-and-which-type/

If you have a yard this will make housebreaking much easier. It is much easier to get up during the night and take a dog out in the yard than it is to actually go for a walk.

The amount of exercise a dog requires varies by dog and breed. Each dog is an individual, so some may need more others require less. If you have a higher energy breed making sure they get enough exercise is key to avoiding behavior problems.

You will also want to puppy proof your yard and house.

  • Robsy, If you're seriously 'rethinking' your goldendoodle because the breed/its needs may not be a good for you, look past that $400 deposit if you can. The best fit you can get with your lifestyle, home, and expectations is more valuable; a good choice on a pup will last many...

TDawg54 and Chitowngal have both provided good info. I see TDawg54 mentioned Bichons. We know a Bichon that's such a complete hoot, everyone that meets it adores it. Will fetch with almost unending delight and is smart as a whip. The Bichon's size makes it easy to care for/vet, take along in the car, and pick-up if unsure about other/strange approaching dogs.
