Parking Spaces for Rent?

Hey Everyone,

My Fiance and I just moved to Albany Park (Sunnyside and Drake) and parking is a nightmare. It has been taking 20+ minutes on average to find a parking spot every night. I'm looking for 1 or 2 parking spaces for rent that are close to our location.

@ Ward - I don't have abando's, I've got a guy who uses the block as his personal parking lot for business related trucks ( construction) and snowplows. If and when a copper from 017 shows up he goes right by these violations. If you ask the copper to write them they always say "I come back later and do it" which never happens. Maybe he's doing favors for them or their related. Just like the rumor that he's doing favors for Mell. Mell gave him the placards to put on the trucks saying they're exempt. Funny but you used to be entitled to only ONE placard and the company name had to be posted on the truck ( his is not). Mell gave them one than one. My understanding is those placards are no longer legal and should not be used. I think there some shenanigans going on here with Mell and the po po and this guy.

Fence Builders

Hi Friends! Wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a fence builder? We are looking to build a horizontal fence in backyard as well as our front yard. Any recommendations are appreciated!

  • Our friend was an award winning builder. Several years ago he had 2 clients back out of projects because of bad Angies List reviews. When he looked into it he found several horrible reviews from people he had never heard of. He contacted Angies List and they said they had no way of verifying if reviews were real. He suspected the reviews were initiated by a competitor but could not prove it.

  • I've used Angies List for at least 10 years. I never base my decision on just one or two good or bad reviews. I read ALL the reviews. I look at any pictures posted. There are always some people who are never happy with anything and it is important story...

There are always some people who are never happy with anything and it is important story see what the company does to resolve those issues. I look for someone who's been in business for a while thats licensed and insured if required. I also interview several potentials before I decide to hire. During the interview I ask questions and get a feel for how the company is to work with. Then I decide who to hire. I never take the first person I see on Angies List and I never take the cheapest or the most expensive. I also post reviews and have no problem if a potential customer wants to call me regarding a job someone did on my place.

Parked car in driveway?

I have a question about parking a car in my driveway. My inlaws are going south for the next month or so and have left their vehicle in our driveway. It will mostly remained parked there -- we don't plan on using it much if at all. Do I need to purchase a city sticker for it? It has current IL plates but is registered in a suburb.

  • Sami, maybe you would have money to buy your city sticker if you would park your car legally.

Sounds like you are a bit of a mess in a dress!!!

  • From Daily Herald 1/16/2011:

Schaumburg's requirement for residents to display an annual village vehicle sticker will no longer be in effect as of May 1, 2011.

An optional community id sticker will be available April1, 2011 for those concerned about receiving a ticket from another community.

Water line install pipe replacement Referrals needed

Hello, i'm getting a waterline install quote for a 3 flat in the Northside of Chicago. Looking for economical referrals if anyone has any. I've already gotten pricey quotes from Apex, and Parks Plumbing but am wondering if a smaller company can do better. Thanks everyone.

  • May I ask why the street to house line needs to be replaced? Is it leaking before reaching the house or having low pressure issue? When I replaced the lines in my building we did it from the point where it entering the house to all the fixtures and the boiler room.

When you say waterline, are you referring to the water service? This is the line that brings water from the municipal main to your building. If that’s the case, then your choices among plumbing contractors is going to be more limited than for work that does not involve going into the public way, which is required to replace a water service. Depending on the current size and fixture count, you may we’ll need to go into the street, requiring a street opening permit among other things. I’m not certain of the age of your 3 flat, but many older buildings in Chicago have a 1 inch lead (or iron) water service which no longer meets current code. You will need to bring things up to current code once you expose it. We do not do water services yet-it is one of the very few services we do not offer (but are looking to in the not too distant future) but would be happy to refer you to someone. If you are looking for inside plumbing, I’d be happy to give you any advice or take a look at things if you’d like.

The reason I say that is because even though it is a bit warmer, someone in an SUV (Grey Nissan Mirano, I think) would know if the window was opened. People, this is the problem: if we don't teach our children to do better, how can we expect better from them? Just bothers me because I pick up trash in front of my house and neighbors, shovel snow, etc, and don't feel that anyone realizes they are in a 'neighborhood' any longer. When did this blatant disregard for others start?

  • Try Kabobi Grill just a block north.

  • Try the whitefish weekend special at Kabobi. Ask for it so that they get the message that we want it on the regular menu, not only on the weekend specials. I'm addicted to that kabobi whitefish!!! I get really cranky when they don't offer it. Help me!!! 😍

Theft at Welles park tonight

My son's friend had his bag (phone, clothes etc)stolen from the locker room. The two male thieves also entered the girls locker room. Warn your kids to be sure to always lock up their stuff and girls should always immediately alert an adult if a male enters their locker room. Wish there were cameras in the hallways there too.

My brother went to Gordon Tech in the 1990s and loved the auto and wood shops among other things. It is now called DePaul College Prep. My son is in the 6th grade and we are starting to look at high schools. A couple of items on their website alarmed me. One is that it seems that with the change to DePaul CP, they also did away with all shop classes. While my son wants to go to college, I felt it important that he learn to work with his hands as well. It seems so many people go to college only to come out and struggle to find work. Yet I have a friend who is an electrician and he makes fantastic money, and has always been busy.

The other concern was, is DePaul CP a racist school? I see they have a Black Student Union, but none for whites! I do not want to send my son to a racist school since we are a family that is proud of what God made us (I am white, my wife is Hispanic) so we would not mind him joining a group of others that would share like minded ideas about their culture, as I am sure the Black Student Union does, but to have one and not the other worries me in that, this may be a school that teaches that some races deserve special treatment based solely on the color of their skin. Does anyone have experience with DePaul CP? Many thanks for advise. We have a couple of years, but time passes quickly!

No guilt whatsoever on my part.

Yes these are both true. My electrician friend says that another complaint he has is when his customers go on youtube, assume each job is just like it is on the internet and then question his price, yet are unable to turn a screwdriver on their own. He charges $185 per hour for his labor rate, and even with overhead, that is not a bad living.

Illegal parking on private property

Can I tow an illegally parked car on my private back lot? What are my rights?

  • Perhaps this link will help; yes, it's your private property and you can tow. The link is for a company that will make a sign with the IL statute number on it: https://www.mysecuritysign.com/illinois-no-trespassing-signs

  • Someone parked blocking the entrance to my driveway. I called the police and they came and wrote a $100.00 ticket and asked me if I wanted the car towed. I told them the ticket was sufficient for the first time. He said if they ever block the driveway again I can have them towed.
BTW, I do have a store bought sign that warns people that if they park and block the driveway their car will be towed away.

Candidates running for Illinois Attorney General have been shown to be loyal to the Party. Aaron Goldstein is running to give the Attorney General's office back to the people. He will be the people's attorney.

Right now, this office is representing big money, big corporations and political insiders. No one is representing the people. Aaron will return the office to its intended function. As a life-long Public Defender, Aaron Goldstein is the candidate who most truly aligns with the AG's original mission.

Unapologetically progressive, Aaron’s compelling new video, tells his story as a native Chicagoan who grew up to become a public defender of everyday Illinoisans. Goldstein graduated from Lane Tech High School and then earned his bachelors’ degree in political science from the University of Illinois and his JD from the University of Iowa.

When he finished law school, he applied for only one job: to become a public defender, “because I believe in the human dignity of us all,” Goldstein said. He has devoted his career to representing individuals—real people—in criminal and civil rights cases. He has litigated hundreds of cases.

“I believe that a lawyer’s job is to stand for the most vulnerable in our society and to live out the principle of ‘justice for all,’” said Goldstein. Throughout his career, he has witnessed, firsthand, the destructive impact of income inequality, segregation and unfairness in the criminal justice system. “The criminal justice system is broken, but we can change this.”

In the video he shows how he stood up against the machine and won by beating long-time politician and power broker Richard Mell to become 33rd Ward Democratic Committeeman. He is running for Attorney General to make bold, progressive change—to stand up to powerful interests, make lasting criminal justice reform and fight government corruption.

This video is part of a media campaign and will be seen throughout Illinois.

Home - Aaron Goldstein for Attorney General
I am running for Attorney General to stand up for all Illinoisans. I will be a champion for justice and stand up for all of us. That's what I've stood for my whole life and that's why I'm running for Attorney General.

affordable snow removal service/person?

hello neighbors!
We are a new business at the corner of Avondale and Pulaski and we are looking for a more affordable option for our snow removal. We're interested in a professional service for heavier snow falls (over one inch) and/or a local person who could just (perhaps with a snowblower?) take care of our sidewalks during light snowfalls. We've gotten lucky so far this year but there is still (purportedly) a lot of winter days left!

Thanks!

Never ending car alarm

Hi folks,

I wanted to know if anyone has experienced a never ending car alarm somewhere on Lawrence between Oakley and Leavitt. Today, I was woken up at 7am by this alarm, it is now 9:30am and it’s still going on. Tuesday afternoon and night it seems the same car had the same issue. The alarm went on till 8pm from the mid afternoon. I called 311 which connected me to the police they said they would bring a car out this was a little before 8am but obviously nothing has happened. Does anyone have any suggestions what to do about this?

I called 311 once for a car going off all night. They said the only thing they could do was put a noise violation ticket on it. Which wouldn't help get it turned off obviously. Another time was a neighbor's car that beeped outside my window everytime a car drove down the street. It was going off several times a minute round the clock. I was starting to go crazy after a week of this. I finally put a note on the car explaining the frequency. After the note disappeared so did the sound. I think non nasty notes are the most effective. Unfortunately I don't think you can do anything in the moment because I don't think cops will tow the car. Unless you know how to get into the car and turn it off like that other guy!

I wish I had a better answer for you, but unfortunately there are a variety of issues to work through at the Montrose spot that continue to put timing and planning up in the air. Maybe put some of those slot machines in the back and patrons can also bet on the ponies with an OTB. Forget about all those fancy microbrews, only Schlitz or Old Style for a buck and a quarter each. It will be the classiest establishment on the NW side. Call it "Deplorables"

Save the Tables: Last-minute New Year's Eve reservations at 178 Chicago restaurants
Welcome back to our annual Save-the-Tables feature, wherein you, the alert reader, get a shot at impossible-to-get New Year's Eve tables that I, your not-so-humble servant, have set aside. OK, actually, the restaurant owners themselves are the generous folks who set these reservations aside. But they're all in my name.

Just read some of this thread. Steve sounds like your the only one impressed with yourself. Whats the big deal about an Eve of the Eve party at Merch Mart that anybody could drop $160 for. It's not some exclusive shindig that's by invitation only. You can see Maggie Speaks at any of the numerous summer fest's all over the city ( but not downtown!! ) every summer for free. I don't think anybody at the party was all that impressed with you either Steve or you wouldn't be spending your time on EveryBlock with all us dumb paupers. Poor Steve. Too smart and rich for everyone.

  • Correction: he is neither.

Baby Stuff Donation

Hey folks, I have accumulated a ton of baby stuff over the years ( 5 children ), Potty trainer, basinet, several fold up plans, bath tub, etc. I donate to the epilepsy foundation but they do not take baby stuff. Also, most of it is too big to box. Does anyone know who may take these items? They are all in excellent condition. Also, it would have to be a pick up. Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Ilene, I think I also have children's boots!!

Please clear snow and ice from sidewalks.

Most sidewalks were full of ice this week. If there is a melt of snow one day and you see the temperatures will drop over night the sidewalks will have ice. When I try to walk on these sidewalks and try not to fall I think of the people that live in these homes that didn't bother to clear their sidewalks. Think of your neighbors, the kids on their way to school and the delivery people. It only takes a few minutes to clear your sidewalk. There are many bad sidewalks with cracks and dug up in the neighborhood. So add ice and snow and it makes it that much worse.

  • michelle, loving the yaktrax! it's nice to not just walk in boots when the weather warms up (haha) to double digits. thanks again for the recommendation!

  • paul in jefferson jefferson park resident

I am a landlord , I shovel stairs, sidewalks and salt . Many homeowners don't. Many city sidewalks also are in need of repairs so who gets the ticket the city.
