Yes there are cheaper restaurants in Edgewater and Uptown - but they are not fine food sit down and be served restaurants. One needs to compare similar food and service when comparing restaurants. Revival had sandwiches and Burgers for lunch. The voting was done by a Rogers Park individual - It was a vote entered to counter my smiling thumbs up. Check the names of the voters. I ate at Revival often - that speaks volumes about my vote.

Well, I'd agree that there is a lot of good dinnertime competition (Income Tax, for example)…but for lunch, I'd have to respectfully disagree with you Sandy. After all, with Loyola so close (offering all those catering/business-meeting opportunities), it's hard to believe that Revival couldn't have done fantastically during the lunchtime hours. And, in my humble opinion, there is hardly a better locale for an Edgewater restaurant…it should have been a magnet for commuting-from-downtown-let's-do-dinner-hey-we're-right-here-at-the-Granville-el-stop crowd. Pretty much every time I hop off the el on my way home, Flaco's has a good gathering and Revival is one table away from being utterly dead. I am sorry @headsup…I know you loved Revival, and that's cool…but if the neighborhood can find love Income Tax and Uncommon Ground, it could have found love for Revival. But the love just wasn't there. Hey, I've been there…sometimes I love something everyone else dislikes…at times like that I have had to step back, take a deep breath, and try to divorce myself from my preferences.

New to Edgewater and Chicago

Hi Neighbors,

I just moved here, was wondering if anyone had suggestions of good places/groups in the area to meet people. I work till around 7 in the evening and have to come home a walk the dog, so it limits my time span to meet new people.

  • Walk your dog early in the morning =and of course on weekends - ( not to mention when you get home from work) - - - Since you are lucky enough to have a dog - you don't have to worry about where to meet people = = by now I am sure many people talk to you while walking the dog..... I can think of no better way to meet folks of a like mind..... Everyone has given you good ideas.....you can't go wrong - enjoy your new neighborhood.....

  • Here’s hoping something good goes in that nice space, it will be a welcomed change :-)

Resignation from volunteer HOA board.

Hi,

I am currently the president of our volunteer HOA board in my building. I was volunteered for the position and I no longer am interested in acting as board president. From what I am reading, I have absolutely not obligation to continue as a board member as long as I formally resign.

Does anyone have any experience with this? ANY information is helpful. Thanks!

  • CookieMuffin Edgewater resident.

By-laws state nothing about board members resigning, that is why I inquired here. I have read all of our by-laws as I am the president. I was just curious if there were any legal ramifications.

Hi, headsup. My building has a completely volunteer board. We don't have lower assessments for serving on the board. I don't think your comment has any relevancy to my post. I asked for any info regarding resigning, not your opinion on assessments.

  • Helen NoH North of Howard for 55 + years

I doubt that there's anything in the Illinois law regulating condos regarding this issue. It probably should have been included in your By-laws. Our By-laws (for a co-op not a condo) call for a written letter of resignation.

I'd take Sarahdonis' advice to heart. While serving on the board is a lot of thankless work, it gives you some say so in how your building is run and funds are spent. I've been on our board for nearly all of the more than 40 years I've lived here.

looking for monthly parking rental

I live near Swift Elementary, and I'm looking for a monthly, long-term rental parking spot. I've already checked out the usual websites (spothero, parqex, craigslist, etc.). Any information about available spots would be greatly appreciated.

  • Except for walking past it often, I don't know much about it, but there is a fenced parking lot on the corner of Winthrop and Glenlake, one block from Swift. There is a telephone number on the gate.

  • Mark H home skooled

Thanks for the heads up, Larry. I do have that number, but I haven't called it yet. I was hoping to find something a little closer because I'm just that lazy. :-P

Moving within Edgewater area, CTA station question

Hi. Right now i have a studio close to Broadway and on Granville. I need a 1 bedroom and saw one on Granville but I'm looking for Aug 1st and they have to rent July 1st so it may be rented by the time i can move in. I saw another 1 bedroom on Bryn Mawr a little further from the Bryn Mawr CTA and half way towards Clark St.

How does the Bryn Mawr area compare to Granville? I will be traveling in the evenings. Also how do the neighborhoods compare?

I love the stores and accessibility around Granville!

Thanks!

  • Thank you for all the information and positive comments! Looking forward to my move!

  • headsup not available

Granville is a great place to live - you will enjoy the new buildings when they are finished - and the new restaurants are in place - you will see the art scene continues to grow. Granville is a growing street - Bryn Mawr ?? Granville is close to transportation and the lake - another plus is Granville is part of Edgewater - the place to live, work, and play. Granville and "Hip" come together.

Violence in Edgewater

Hey neighbors I just wanted to clue everyone in to what happened on Thursday night/ Friday morning on Kenmore Avenue between Foster and Berwyn. There was an attempted and fortunately unsuccessful drive by sometime between 9-11 pm on our block with multiple shots fired. The suspect who was a member of the Latin Kings was apprehended in the same location the following morning between 8-9 am as he returned to try to finish the job. He was armed at the time of the arrest. I wanted to post about it as a reminder to keep your head on a swivel and that we as neighbors have to look out for eachother.

  • You are absolutely correct !! Thanks for keeping everyone informed.

Lawsuit filed in Andersonville porch collapse

Lawsuit filed in Andersonville porch collapse
CHICAGO -- The first lawsuit has now been filed over a porch collapse last weekend. 20 people were on the porch in Andersonville when it gave way Sunday during a party. Three people suffered broken bones and contusions and they're suing the property owner. Lawyers say it appears the porch supports were rotted.

Just saw the video - that porch was not looking very strong.....not too solid - and attached to a 'frame' building - - what were those people thinking...?????? It was obviously not designed to hold a crowd. Just the size alone would be obvious to anyone that it was not a 'place for a PARTY'. If I had been there - I would of seen the danger in having so many people on that porch - and I would have 'shooooed' them down to the concrete and yard below....It is very nice of the owner to pay the medical bills.... I hate to say this - but I believe it was the host of the party that should have noticed that there were too many of his guests out on the porch - and reeled them in. In any case - I hope there are no lasting problems from the guests injuries...

Perhaps this publicized accident will help to alert others to be aware these things can happen anywhere - and not to 'push their luck'.

  • I have been on the very porch that collapsed and its large size does make it seem like it is able to hold a lot of people.

There are no set inspection schedules for porches in Chicago. The inspection that was done was probably by a private company the owner hired when he purchased the building, so nothing official or legally binding. That porch was attached to the building with nails and not lag bolts as is required via Chicago city code. Also the WGN story has been amended to correct that there actually has been no lawsuit filed as of the publication date. They merely spoke with a lawyer about what the legal ramifications might be.

  • If I was a landlord I would write into the lease the number of people allowed on a porch. Thinking back of that porch collapse in Lakeview years back that killed many .

  • Totally agree. Chicago city codes specify that number, so by including it in the lease it transfers at least SOME of the liability onto irresponsible tenants.

Water Usage Up over 50% in Andersonville

I know that our utility bills will continue to go up, but my water usage for my 3 flat went up over 50% for the months of January and February. I've spoken to 3 of my neighbors, all on Catalpa between Clark and Glenwood who have also experienced this huge increase in usage. None of us have leaks, some have boilers and some have central air, and we can't figure out why it says we used so much water.

I wrote Alderman Osterman's office and they said they would look into it. I remember there was a water main project in our neighborhood in January of 2018. Has anyone else seen this spike in their water bill?

  • Andrew Lehrer Edgewater resident since 2006

Our 6 flat on Victoria & Wayne experienced something similar - on Jan 1 of this year our usage double. No change in occupants, no meter work/upgrade, just doubled suddenly. We just had the city out and they cannot find any issues with our meter or any leaks in the building. No one in the building has a running toilet or any other suspicious water use. We are at a loss!

  • Thank you for all your responses! I contacted the Alderman, got the number for an actual person at the Chicago Finance/ Utility Department, and they said everything was legitimate. However, I just received a water bill that was $40 for this current period, over 100% less than the last bill.

    I think that is suspicious.
