Need help changing range hood halogen bulb

(Insert lightbulb joke here). Sounds simple, but I have already injured myself following mfr. directions and got only one changed out. Other one won't budge even w/mfr's tool. Maybe I'm not strong enough--definitely not young enough. (No, it's not just a matter of "hold the bulb & unscrew"--these range hood lights were designed by idiots or sadists who hate people who need to cook). I don't want to go through any apps or clearinghouse websites. I just want someone strong enough to come over soon and do this for a reasonable and normal basic handyman fee. (Abt, the merchant who sold me the hood, wants me to fork over an arm & a leg and wait a week--highway robbery even with a discount). PM me if you can do this.

I have on hand only smooth-surface clear duct-tape (the texture is stupidly on the adhesive side), but I will scrounge around for the real cloth stuff, which I hope has some grippy texture. (Maybe buried in my gig bag with extra cables, batteries, etc.).

How safe is the area near Lawrence/Racine, Racine/Broadway/Lawrence?

I recently signed a short-term sublet here for the summer after trying to do as much research as I could and surveying the area when I went to visit the unit. However, a building nearby, the Darlington Hotel, is apparently a shelter/drug trade haven? For some reason, given the non-activity during the day and run-down nature of the building, I assumed it was just abandoned.

Any info or tips I should keep in mind as a petite single woman, aside from the usual requisite city vigilance? Or is it/will it be extremely bad (given summer is on the horizon) to the point I should look for another subletter?

For me personally I would not feel safe going for a long stroll around there by myself, but I think it depends on what you're used to and what your tolerance level is for certain things. I do think that area is a bit better than other parts of Uptown because of the foot traffic and constant activity, plus it is really close to the train so you won't have to walk too far when you're coming and going. Where are you moving there from?

Heated debate with my brother about Chicago

He clearly points out how violent Chicago is-I told him well he doesn't live here and gasp-people do like living here, not everyone is leaving. He thinks he knows the city just because he works in Stoney Island full-time and then goes back to his bubble in Indiana. I told him working here and living here are two different things. It's too bad the news doesn't talk about the good things in Chicago. They really know how to scare people. I don't even know what to say to him.

We reconsidered because we realized how much we loathed Indiana and how it doesn't fit into the lifestyle that we wanted,my biggest concerns was the schools for my daughter but we figured it out. We are glad we decided to stay. I don't think there truly is a perfect place out there. My husband's best friend left the country after living on the east coast, west coast and here and from an outsider he said Chicago is the best city no doubt. This is even saying this after almost getting robbed on the redline where he just punched the guy in the nose to defend himself.

  • AS..I agree there is no perfect place out there and we all have different places that match our lifestyles and what we want out of life. Everyones "best" is different. Glad you figured out your daughters school and decided to stay.

More of an observation, but has anyone noticed a decline in this property? Seems like there's an unusual amount of people in and out of the building, now 2 broken windows that have been "boarded" over. Also, people are living in the garage behind the building, and it's NOT a coach-house. About 2 weeks ago, there was a Sheriff's vehicle in the alley adjacent to the property. This is immediately behind the Philadelphia Church.

  • Thank you, I saw that too. Then it was shown as OFF MARKET. 'I don't know what that means other than it's OFF MARKET. Appreciate your post. Thanks......

Water Usage Up over 50% in Andersonville

I know that our utility bills will continue to go up, but my water usage for my 3 flat went up over 50% for the months of January and February. I've spoken to 3 of my neighbors, all on Catalpa between Clark and Glenwood who have also experienced this huge increase in usage. None of us have leaks, some have boilers and some have central air, and we can't figure out why it says we used so much water.

I wrote Alderman Osterman's office and they said they would look into it. I remember there was a water main project in our neighborhood in January of 2018. Has anyone else seen this spike in their water bill?

  • Hmm... Interesting. Yes, there are residents in all the apartments, the same people who have lived there for years. No new people, no running toilets or leaks, no dripping faucets. They are all metered accounts. I have 4 neighbors who are now saying their bill usages also doubled.

Definitely dig into that suspicious spike in usage, because, even worse is what the city has done and is doing to water rates and water/sewer taxation! As I understand it from research I've done relative to making a decision on increasing laundry machine rate at some buildings I manage, between 2002 and now, the city increased sewer charges to be equal to the water charges, so they literally get you coming and going THERE! There is now a tax on BOTH the water and sewer portions which goes to pay city employee pensions. Between 2002 and 2021-2022--when that tax, incidentally, will progressively reach its currently planned peak--the City of Chicago, it appears, will have increased water and sewer rates 425%, an average of 21.25% per year across 20 years! Thankfully, come 2022, future increases will be limited to the rate of inflation/cost of living data for Chicago. Please share here what you discover about the cause of the increased usage. Likely to be useful to stem the flow and reduce costs!

An off-duty Chicago police officer working security at a Far North Side pharmacy exchanged gunfire with someone who tried to rob the store on Friday, police said.

The attempted robbery happened around 1:20 p.m. at a pharmacy in the 6200 block of North Clark Street in the Edgewater neighborhood, according to police.

The store owner and the off-duty officer confronted the armed robber, resulting in the gunfire.

The robber ran away, and no one was injured, police said.

I've long wondered how this pharmacy and others like it could survive in such a competitive market with the likes of CVS and Walgreens. And now we learn it had an off-duty cop working security and still had a robbery attempt. I wonder if it is another case of a crime related to opioid theft. Another case in favor of more sensible, relaxed state laws on medical marijuana?

O'Connor continues to suck up to Emanuel and tries to suppress investigation.Maybe it's time for him to go....

Aldermen want hearings about lead in Chicago water, but an Emanuel ally sidelines them for now
Mayor Rahm Emanuel's City Council floor leader on Wednesday sidelined for now a proposed public debate over whether the city's doing enough to lower the amount of lead in drinking water. A group of aldermen introduced a resolution Wednesday calling for committee hearings on whether the city and state violate federal water laws.

I just turned one of them away from my door, which is behind a secured outer door at ground level. Likely they are following people into secured residential buildings and knocking on every door to see who's home. To be clear: they are NOT affiliated with ComEd, your meter is not broken, and this is a slamming scam to get you to switch electricity suppliers.

Ignore their words: ask to see their identification badge (they wear an employee badge on a lanyard, likely so they can claim they didn't mis-identify themselves). Their badge will have the SparkEnergy company name/logo on it. SparkEnergy is one of MANY suppliers you can buy your electricity from. They are not the cheapest -- they're more expensive by far than ComEd and a majority of other available providers.

Basically if you cook with this produce, you're a Michelin certified chef.

For those new to CSAs, a CSA is an investment that you make in a farm when they need cash at the beginning of the season, which is paid off to you through a weekly share of their produce throughout the season. It's a really great way to get into cooking seasonally and support local agriculture.

Speaking from experience with CSAs, a close pick up spot is critical, especially if you don't have a car. If you're in the Uptown area and already considering a CSA, take a look at Green Acres!

Homeowner Tax Deductions

I found out that one of our neighbors never took advantage of this great deduction.
Do you own your home(or condo) and not claim the homeowner deduction every year? It needs to be signed up for every single year you live in your home. You can claim the money on your own for backdated tax years that you did not file for the deduction with a certificate of error. A tax group will fill it out for you in exchange for a cut of the refund or you can do it yourself with a little googling and some paperwork.

  • Bill and Larry, in that case, the wording of "The Cook County Assessor’s Office now automatically renews Homeowner Exemptions for properties that were not sold to new owners in the last year" is a bit misleading. Regardless, I'm not going to complain. The take-way from this entire thread, then, seems to be that homeowners should be sure to consistently check on whether exemptions have been applied to their bill.

  • Bill 4500 N Wolcott 30 year plus resident

Jeremy You are correct that the Assessor is to carry over the Homeowners exemption HOWEVER not always folks should always check their 2nd Installment BEFORE they pay - if it is not on the Bill they should request from the assessor a Certificate of Error (C OF E) and pty the lower amount

The finial is probably wired but to install something there today, I think an electrician would pull the old wire and install a new one. That can be done without disturbing the plaster. I had my finial replaced with a ceiling fan. In the late 90s, I had all my old wiring pulled out and new installed. He tied the new wires to the old and simply pulled it through the walls and ceiling. Because I didn't want holes in the plaster, he added outlets affixed to the walls with the wiring in wire molding on the walls, rather than under the walls.

We'd love to hear about how you feel about the sense of community there, things to do nearby, and also your thoughts on crime as the crime maps we have checked are a little vague!

east of Broadway offers more public transportation "at your door" - Sheridan Rd transportation includes 3 buses -2 run every 10 minutes - and the El stop is 2 blocks away. so if public transportation is important - worth a consideration. The Edgewater High rises offer many amenities - doorman, garage, and often retail.

  • I see
    everyone has a positive
    Attitude about this area,
    That's a thumbs up in
    my book.

Parking was very difficult.

I spent two hours trying to park. 5700 block of Winthrop. Ive been reading previous posts, and will try Broadway and the other side of Broadway as well.

@60660 - own a car - provide proof you have paid parking. end of problem. cant afford parking - then you cant afford a car in the city - move to the suburbs where they insist you do not par on the streets overnight -only in your garage and driveway....

Now there is a good idea. Why should the city be so generous in supporting some car owners while others have to pay their way? Doesn't seem right. No justification for this select support of some at the expense of others.

  • Heads..it is not the cost I am.debating..it is WHERE people are going to park. Not everyone lives in a highrise with a garage. Where do those of us that live in smaller buildings and SFH parking under your proposal? Not sure what you mean that the city supports some car owners???

Electric Company Scam - Again

And they're back. I found a guy in my building knocking on doors. Not sure how he got in the building - guessing they just try doors and ours pushed open. Really persistent and aggressive. He was on Clark St.

I asked him how he gained access but he wouldn't answer. He told me that as I hadn't declared any electric company that his company (I couldnt see the name on the laminated paper he handed to me all official)...

I asked him how he gained access but he wouldn't answer. He told me that as I hadn't declared any electric company that his company (I couldnt see the name on the laminated paper he handed to me all official) would be taking over and ensuring that I was not over paying and I needed to merely update my records and sign. (which is officially changing to their electric company)

He led me to believe that my tenant upstairs had let him in. I just found out that she wasn't even home. ARGH!!!

He wouldnt take no for an answer - I told him to leave - then I just said my landlord pays the bills and then I watched him go and I made sure the lock latched.
