Log Cabin Republican Calls Police on Wrong Woman

In what appears to be another case of calling the police because someone is Black, Morry Matson, Log Cabin Republican candidate for Edgewater's Mayor, has a lot of explaining to do. His last claim to fame was promoting a multi-million dollar carnival boardwalk in front of lots of people's homes and cutting off their unobstructed views of the lake.

Black woman says CVS manager called police because she had wrong coupon
Camilla Hudson wanted to use a manufacturer's coupon at CVS on North Broadway on Friday night, but a manager who said he'd never seen a coupon like that called the police, she said in a Facebook post. "So, THIS just happened: I had the police called on me for attempting to use a coupon @ the CVS Pharmacy located at 6150 N.

You are right that I don’t know for 100% sure that he wouldn’t have called the police on a White woman. The point is that the odds favor my perceptions while they don’t favor yours. Given the immediate context of today’s politics and the emboldened racism of many, my chances have only increased while yours have only eroded.

You can walk cross the street on a red light but it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be hit.

  • I hear your point,Gabrial, and I totally agree with you about that gut feeling when you just know the motivation is prejudice, and it very well may have been in this case, but it's a dangerous thing when people who were not there and don't know the whole story jump on the band...

I hear your point,Gabrial, and I totally agree with you about that gut feeling when you just know the motivation is prejudice, and it very well may have been in this case, but it's a dangerous thing when people who were not there and don't know the whole story jump on the band wagon of self righteous indignation. Whenever a conclusion is immediately made,no questions asked, a red flag should go up about motivation. It could be just knee jerk, emotional reactions that come from frustration with this growing epidemic of racism in this Trump era. Most of us are suffering a form of PTSD since he took office, wouldn't you agree? The point is, we are far more effective if we remain rational and ask the necessary questions without assuming the answers. If we jump to conclusions and are later proved wrong, than we loose credibility and legitimate cases of racism will be completely dismissed and ignored. There could also be political motivation behind jumping to the conclusion that this guy was acting out of racial prejudice. In my opinion, Al Frankin is an example of being the victim of the republicans exploiting the "me too" movement to suit their own purpose and we're paying the price for that now. I'm just saying, it's in the best interest of social justice to get the whole story before we crucify this guy.

Farewell Dear Neighbors

It’s been a good run here on Everyblock. May you all do well and be safe. Thank you for being caring neighbors.

"Primed for redevelopment": Cedar Street Cos. leads wave of Uptown luxury projects
With 710 apartments, Cedar Street Companies' proposed development at Broadway and Argyle Street Uptown stands out, but not just for its size. The complex - along with similar projects by CRG and Praedium Development - is part of a growing number of luxury apartment mega-projects in a neighborhood previously known more for affordable housing.

We have owned our 3 flat for 15 years and are overjoyed!! How exciting to see the beginnings of returning Uptown to the grandeur it saw in the 20’s.
I finally feel there is hope for this community with this development and the renovation of the Uptown theater.

Save Andersonville Charm

Morning neighbors - as many of you know, developers are coming into our neighborhood, threatening the charm, character, and available green space. This isn't just relegated to East Andersonville, but South Andersonville, too. Our block club is trying to do what we can to preserve a rare Victorian on Carmen. If this is important to you, please consider signing this petition.

If we all work together, we can try to preserve the Andersonville we all know and love.

The noise was deafening- the sparks showered down on observers - and the Cycle and Saddle show was completed blocked out. Despite the very dangerous situation- Not a policeman in sight despite the obvious illegal activity. Watching Cycle and Saddle fireworks was impossible. Many finally left - and i suspect will never return to Osterman Beach for fireworks. This is a shame - a few individuals were allowed to ruin what should have been a great event. I suspect the high rises surrounding Ardmore were not happy either. Did they call police? The Alderman needs to give this appropriate attention next year. What a shame.

  • headsup not available

not the black high rise - we were on the Ardmore side of Osterman beach and they were shooting big rockets on that beach - sound blasting off the high rises and had sparks settling on the beach causing people to scatter creating a wide 'no man's land"

  • Helen NoH North of Howard for 55 + years

Why don't you just join Saddle and Cycle, headsup? I believe you claim to have the proper upbringing and background. That way you can enjoy the fireworks from the club next year and won't have to put up with the riff raff on the public beach. If you apply, though, I suggest you use the proper name for the club and not Cycle and Saddle as in your OP.

Is there a place to meet nice people?

I've lived here for 4 years in a great building and I love the neighborhood. The only thing is, most of my friends and social events are south and I have to travel to see them.
Is there a hangout or someplace where I can meet and get to know my Edgewater neighbors?
Thanks! :)

Revival - Final Good-bye

Exciting and busy night at Revival. We will miss this fine establishment

  • The failure rate in the restaurant business is pretty high and Revival had some strong competition that it simply couldn't match. At Revival's price point people understandably expected more than just a little glitz sprinkled on top of average food. The market place is ruthless in a competitive environment like Chicago's.

  • darn....
We were given a Revival gift card, and had hoped to try them out for brunch.

New to Edgewater and Chicago

Hi Neighbors,

I just moved here, was wondering if anyone had suggestions of good places/groups in the area to meet people. I work till around 7 in the evening and have to come home a walk the dog, so it limits my time span to meet new people.

  • Walk your dog early in the morning =and of course on weekends - ( not to mention when you get home from work) - - - Since you are lucky enough to have a dog - you don't have to worry about where to meet people = = by now I am sure many people talk to you while walking the dog..... I can think of no better way to meet folks of a like mind..... Everyone has given you good ideas.....you can't go wrong - enjoy your new neighborhood.....

  • Here’s hoping something good goes in that nice space, it will be a welcomed change :-)

Internet service advice

Hi. I'm moving to W Hood and the building doesn't supply the internet like my last place did. I had hi point with my last apartment that was included in the rent. Any suggestions for internet service? I don't need tv or phone just internet, and I'm not a gamer, I just work at home and watch some netflix at times.

Thanks!

Moving within Edgewater area, CTA station question

Hi. Right now i have a studio close to Broadway and on Granville. I need a 1 bedroom and saw one on Granville but I'm looking for Aug 1st and they have to rent July 1st so it may be rented by the time i can move in. I saw another 1 bedroom on Bryn Mawr a little further from the Bryn Mawr CTA and half way towards Clark St.

How does the Bryn Mawr area compare to Granville? I will be traveling in the evenings. Also how do the neighborhoods compare?

I love the stores and accessibility around Granville!

Thanks!

  • Thank you for all the information and positive comments! Looking forward to my move!

  • headsup not available

Granville is a great place to live - you will enjoy the new buildings when they are finished - and the new restaurants are in place - you will see the art scene continues to grow. Granville is a growing street - Bryn Mawr ?? Granville is close to transportation and the lake - another plus is Granville is part of Edgewater - the place to live, work, and play. Granville and "Hip" come together.

When is the Foster - Balmoral yard sale?

Hey Andersonville, when do you plan to have the Foster-Balmoral yard sales?
I haven't seen too much advertising for yard sales in the Broadway/Foster/Carmen area.

Water Usage Up over 50% in Andersonville

I know that our utility bills will continue to go up, but my water usage for my 3 flat went up over 50% for the months of January and February. I've spoken to 3 of my neighbors, all on Catalpa between Clark and Glenwood who have also experienced this huge increase in usage. None of us have leaks, some have boilers and some have central air, and we can't figure out why it says we used so much water.

I wrote Alderman Osterman's office and they said they would look into it. I remember there was a water main project in our neighborhood in January of 2018. Has anyone else seen this spike in their water bill?

  • Andrew Lehrer Edgewater resident since 2006

Our 6 flat on Victoria & Wayne experienced something similar - on Jan 1 of this year our usage double. No change in occupants, no meter work/upgrade, just doubled suddenly. We just had the city out and they cannot find any issues with our meter or any leaks in the building. No one in the building has a running toilet or any other suspicious water use. We are at a loss!

  • Thank you for all your responses! I contacted the Alderman, got the number for an actual person at the Chicago Finance/ Utility Department, and they said everything was legitimate. However, I just received a water bill that was $40 for this current period, over 100% less than the last bill.

    I think that is suspicious.

We are in the office building at 6228 N Broadway and have been experiencing disturbing activity in the back of our building for months. The building is on the police watch list and we have instructions to call 911 for any disturbances. Please be on the lookout for people hanging out in the parking lot or under the steps in the back of the building. They typically look pretty drugged out and sometimes are on bicycles or in cars and sometimes just on foot and almost "camping" out. They are always there to "see" an upstairs tenant. They knock on the back windows and wait until they are let in then leave after a few minutes. Use your imagination as to what might be happening. This is really disturbing and on Thursday, we could not get out of our door to get to our cars and leave work. Please call 911 if you ever witness any of these people hanging around. I've been told by the Caps Officer and the tactical team that the more calls they receive about this building, the better their chances to remedy the situation.Thanks.

2018 State of Edgewater event

I noticed in Ald. Osterman's weekly update that there will be a State of Edgewater meeting held on June 7th. It "will feature elected officials representing Edgewater talking about their work and how it impacts Edgewater business owners and residents." That, and the list of confirmed elected officials sound great. Though at an inconvenient 8am time, I'm considering attending.
But I was surprised to see a price for admission -- $37.22, including "a small breakfast." Does that make sense to anyone?

  • It doesn't make sense to me either. The event has sponsors as well.so it seems like a lot of money is generated at the event. I can see a much more reasonable "charge"..like maybe 10.00

  • Jeffrey Littleton If you can't be a poet, be the poem.

Technically it's a fundraiser for the chamber of commerce.

  • I've been curious about that myself. I'm wondering if it may be an expansion of the theater next door.

  • Could also be connected with red line work- they will have staging areas for equipment and workers. Check with alderman’s office.
