The Next Shiny Object?

What the media is concerned about: The soda tax, the Cubs, the Bears, the Blackhawks, Trump's next bowel movement, legalized marijuana, etc.
What they should be talking about: Alderman Proco Joe Moreno threatening a Chicago citizen, unprecedented property tax increase, woman shot in Rogers Park. I also notice the Harvey Weinstein scandal has fallen from / never been on the front pages. Maybe because the media was complicit in the cover up for years?

  • You think Joe Moreno is a problem?? You truly do not know what's going on my friend. You need to scratch below the surface.

Stolen Packages

In just this past week I have had some packages go missing. At first I thought, well maybe they delivered to the wrong address and waited a day to see if they would turn up. Well the next day I cam home and just happen to see out of the corner of my eye a brown box with a label that looks very familiar. Low and behold there was the remains of my package with no contents inside. Along with a neighbors shredded package and missing contents as well! WTF man!!! I mean they literally opened the box up like 10ft from my door and just left the box there empty and sad.

Potential Missing Dog on Cullom??

I saw a little white dog (little bit like a Maltese mix) without a collar at Cullom and Albany, I waited around to see if the owner was lurking somewhere but no. I tried to speak to him and approach him but he was a little timid. He walked on to Cullom & Kedzie and seemed to want to get into an apartment building where I let him in. It was 4257-59. When I walked back he wasn't in the common area, so hopefully he found his owner.

If no, I'd suggest going over to that building now.

60614 / Lincoln Park US Post Office on Clark is Awful, Hiring Carriers Who Can Not Read

I have been calling the Lincoln Park/60614 center for 2 days. The recording says to stay on the line for the next available agent but then goes directly to an off-site "operator" recording that was not answered for at least 4 minutes before I hung up. I was not able to even leave a message.

I have been calling the Lincoln Park/60614 center for 2 days. The recording says to stay on the line for the next available agent but then goes directly to an off-site "operator" recording that was not answered for at least 4 minutes before I hung up. I was not able to even leave a message.

Yesterday, the mail truck delivered a package on my front stoop in direct sight of any thieves walking by. Obviously, this carrier does not know how to read:

1. The sign on the door says to leave packages in the lobby.
2. The address label states to leave the package in the lobby. I now make that part of my address under the house number and street, above the "Chicago, IL 60614".

The package could have even been left behind the noticeable (to the carrier) brick hall wall by the door but out of street sight.

Then the carried LIED; the text sent to me saying it was delivered said it was "Left with and Individual". No, it wasn't. Yesterday, someone did answer at the carrier station just after 5pm saying they were closed.

  • At one time I too thought they were hiring illiterate carriers, mostly because we received so much mail that was not ours. I now believe the problem is that so many carriers are talking on a Bluetooth device while doing their route, and are not paying attention to what they are doing

Yes, I lived there for 23 years and mail delivery was terrible the entire time. It's not that they didn't see the message to leave the package in the lobby; they simply do not care. I had wrong mail delivered all the time and my mail was delivered elsewhere and I sometime received it up to a year late. There was no consistent mail delivery time and we would get mail delivered at 8:30 at night. That also happens at my new 60610 address, but at least we're more likely to get our mail and our packages are left inside.

Aggressive energy salesman

A guy was triple ringing the doorbell last night around 7pm Monday). He asked to review my people’s gas and comed bills. I opened the door and pointed at the sign above the doorbell that clearly stated no soliciting. His response was “what does that mean?” I told him I wasn’t interested. Then he seemed to be acting as if he was offended. Then he took an incoming call and remained on the porch. I told him to leave and he did so slowly. As he exited, he left the gate open. I then instructed him to resecure the gate, and did so while giving me a hard look. Based on demeanor alone, I wouldn’t give his employer a chance.

Lost Kitten

Hi everyone - Our little grey and white kitten escaped this morning from Addison and Fremont. Kerri is about three pounds and fluffy. She is a foster kitten, so she hasn't been chipped yet. She is super friendly and loves a good cuddle, so if you see her, don't be afraid to pick her up! Please call if you find her, she's greatly missed already. Thanks so much! Randi, 916-765-5241

  • Good news, we found her! She had escaped into the stairwell and my neighbor had taken her in, then left for work. Thanks everyone for the messages. Luckily we got a happy ending!

  • Fantastic ... a special thank you to the neighbor!

Missing street postal boxes

This may be a rant, but it's a big concern. I walked from Waveland to Belmont (and beyond) (10 blocks) down Broadway and saw only ONE street mailbox on Patterson. No boxes all that stretch and on the side streets. To me, this is disturbing that there are no accessible street mail boxes.
Where do people mail their packages and mail? I know mail sent is down, but surely people mail bills, greeting cards, small packages. Luckily I'm near N. Marine Drive and Waveland where there's a mailbox, but I'm afraid the PO will take that one away.

I have Exciting news from Kindergarten room 109… we’re ready to update our class with a new “Smart Board” (interactive whiteboard system)! This school year (and for years to come), I want to ensure that my students have what they need to succeed, so I've created a request on a 501(c)3 charity website called DonorsChoose.org.

I'm writing to ask for any donations possible for my students - no matter the size (seriously, every little bit counts).
If you can't donate anything now, no worries... just share this information with anyone who you know is passionate about education. Your donation will have a direct impact on at least 24 students this year and you'll hear back from our class about your impact!
Here’s my classroom request:
Go to this link https://www.donorschoose.org/donors/proposal.html?id=2743674# or go to Donors Choose.org - Mrs. Daye. “Technologically Savvy in Kindergarten”
Please don’t forget to spread the word if you know anyone who may want to show their support for public schools. Please share our classroom page and contribute if you can!

Lathrop, Largest Public Housing Complex On North Side Breaks, Ground

It's a "long time coming" for proponents of the project, who have been tangled up in a heated debate and legal battles with residents and housing activists over the future of the 32-acre complex, bordered by the Chicago River, Diversey Parkway, Clybourn and Damen avenues, for more than 15 years.

Felicia- Service technicians have a different skill set versus call center operators and the technicians cost a lot more. Many service calls can be resolved with out the need to send out a technician. I agree that it's extremely frustrating when the operator is just reading from the script but it wouldn't be cost effective to pay a technician to sit and answer phones.

I'm also a bit surprised that the changing the connector was all that was needed. While they can fail, it's not very common. Hopefully you didn't get charged for it.

Jury Duty

I've been called for jury duty for the first time. I'm scheduled for the Daley Center.

Can anyone answer the following questions:

Is there WiFi in the jury holding room?
Can we eat or drink in the jury holding room?
Should I pack a lunch or are we released to get something to eat?
It says on my summons that cameras are not permitted. Does that mean they will hold my smart phone all day because it has a camera?

Does anyone have any other words of advice?

(I really didn't know where to post this, so I picked Lake View since I live there.)

  • One tip is that depending on your place of employment, you may need to hand over the check to your employer in order to get the day off as a paid day. Check with your HR dept. Last time I was at Daley, 2 years ago, they gave an hour lunch. But seriously, if you can afford the time, I would encourage you to perform your jury duty service and not try some weak excuse to get out of it.

  • d3 NOH

You can delay it 11 weeks automatically of the first time doesn't work too.

Last night around 9:10pm, I was traveling northbound on damen Ave. at the 4 way stop at Barry & damen, I proceeded to enter the intersection when it was my turn & I was hit by someone driving an old dingey white or light silver SUV with a darker front bumper. They were traveling wesbound. I don't know if they ever stopped for the stop sign. I saw them enter the intersection, coming right at me as I was midway through the intersection. We briefly made eye contact & there was no indication in that moment they cared about what was about to happen. My car became undriveable & I thought I saw this car pull over on the northbound side of Barry once they made it through the intersection but if they did, they quickly drove off. If anyone has any security cameras in that area or knows of any that could have captured this incident please advise. It's a busy intersection right, with Hamlin park being on the corner south/west corner. No one stoped to help. There were a group of kids that quickly dispersed after witnessing the accident & SUV speed off but they were unable to see the plates. They were confident it was a Chevy, possibly a suburban & that the driver was a woman with tattoos.

Thanks for any and all of your help,

Rats On Lakeview Street Out Of Control, Residents Say
LAKEVIEW - When John Nydam parks his car at night at his home near the Belmont "L" stop, his first thought is whether he'll be able to get inside his house without crossing paths with a rat. "Every time I'm walking, I'm nervous," he said.

Well be careful what you wish for. Our alderman refuses to install needed trash cans in Rogers park citing this exact reasoning.... Not enough money to fund maintenance

The construction project to repair these crumbling bridges and add new bicycle lanes are now underway. The project includes structural repairs to existing steel beams, repairs to the concrete decks, construction of new parapet walls and installation of shared-use (bicycle and pedestrian) paths on the sidewalks underneath the viaducts. Wilson and Lawrence Avenues will each temporarily be closed to vehicular traffic for a brief duration during nighttime, but not at the same time. Those who were staying under the viaducts are being assisted by the city's Department of Family & Support Services--which has had case workers on site on a daily basis for more than a month--as well as other non-profit providers who specialize in identifying and accessing shelter and permanent housing. I fully support a "Housing First" approach with the goal of finding permanent, affordable housing and then providing connections to community-based support for long-term success. I will continue to work with agencies such as DFSS and non-profits, as well as listen to the concerns of the community at large, in order to meet the needs of all members of our community."

The result of all this policy is a few dozen or so tent-less nomadic homeless with no place to live in Uptown, an area which does have plenty of vacant public and private land big enough, unused, and not under construction, for tents to be set up. But no one with power or authority, including Ald. Cappleman or the Mayor, want to make the decision to legally have tents set up anywhere in Uptown or other areas of the city, (per recent CPD messaging) using variances or exceptions to the law. In this scenario, the homeless would lose what little shelter they have now, loose their property, still be homeless and un-housed, still attempting to get basic services in Uptown, more at risk of increasing their health problems including soon, risking death by exposure to cold weather, as well as more distrustful of others. All under an Alderman , Mayor, and City whose publically stated policy is in favor of the "Housing First" model for helping the homeless and in favor of supportive housing with wrap-around services. That really does not make much sense and seems unnecessarily mean and cruel towards the homeless of Uptown and Chicago.

Sorry, Robert. Wasn't trying to twist your words. Was just pointing out the consequences of the "answer" to your rhetorical question.

I am hardly a "true-blue 'law and order'/NIMBY citizen." And I well understand the police chain of command.

My point is that the homeless have no law-based claim to erect tents (even privately-funded tents) wherever they'd like. Even if that land may be private, otherwise unused, and not under construction. There are zoning and health codes for a reason.

If a private citizen owns land that he or she wants the homeless to use, he or she should make the land suitable for occupancy by erecting a building with plumbing and heat and electricity and in compliance with the various building, zoning and health codes.

A cluster of tents with no accessible bathroom facilities is not good for the health of the occupants or neighbors.

You are correct that I did not attend the meetings about which you write. But I have read most of the articles and posts to which you provided links. Thank you. It seems clear to me that the city has tried to work with the homeless and/or their advocates but there is only so much that can be done. And what can be done seems unacceptable to the homeless and their advocates. So it comes down to what must be done.

And that is to not allow people to sleep in tents on the public way or anywhere that is not suitable for long-term occupancy.

How does one go about reporting a violation of certificate of occupancy?

I live in a Condo mid-rise. We have a business on the first floor. They have taken over our basement with the blessing of the board. However, they do not pay rent, nor have they signed a lease. I live in a Condo mid-rise. We have a business on the first floor. They have taken over our basement with the blessing of the board. However, they do not pay rent, nor have they signed a lease. When the condo looked at using the basement a few years ago, it was found that we could not use the basement as in doing so it would incur more than $20,000 in cost to get a COO, so we decided not to incur the cost. The business on the first floor decided to take over the basement and not pay the money for the COO (we know this because there are no rails that were needed to get the COO on the stairway). We know that they are using the basement as they have told us that they have several million dollars in inventory and there are lights on in the basement 24 X 7. We know that one year they paid rent to the association as it showed as income in the annual report, after that however they have paid no rent. The board is complicit in this violation.
Any suggestions as to how to proceed to get the business out of our basement would be appreciated.

As a condo owner in that building isn't it in your interest to have a viable business at the retail level?

It is no difference say if I have five pianos out in the hallway. That is a common element, and I have no right to have those pianos in the common element. Just like he is not to use space that is not part of his unit. The IL condo law says Limited Common Element *CAN NOT be given, sold or otherwise used, except when the condo has a vote for it and that the vote is 60 percent". That is what the IL condo act says. I am sure you can google it and read it yourself.

    Its not a zoning issue.

Their use of LCE, I agree.

Their created loading dock however is. I did not bring this up as a condo issue, it is a zoning issue. This is where it gets tricky with zoning. Like I said I am no expert in zoning issues. But it would seem to me that a loading dock in a residential area is probably wrong.
