Does anybody have a recommendation for a good GC or somebody who can repair/replace the framing around a window that is leaking? The window is on the rear part of our home, on what would have originally been the back stairwell that at some point was fully enclosed and extended the length of the home. I have no idea how old it is. The weird thing is that it has started to leak today, about three days after the rain stopped. Water seems to be dripping out from between the wood laminate wall covering and the frame. Not sure if it is coming through from the roof or what. Any names would be greatly appreciated!

On a side note I contacted one large company but they actually required all those named on the mortgage to be present in order to just give me a quote. I think I am capable of making a decision without my wife being present, as I know she would be as well. Not interested in a hard sell. Just a hard worker!

  • K in North Center longtime North Side resident

Just used these folks. Not sure of their work long-term, but they fixed a window that other window companies couldn't fix and/or couldn't replace -- or the replacement cost was $2,500.

The Next Shiny Object?

What the media is concerned about: The soda tax, the Cubs, the Bears, the Blackhawks, Trump's next bowel movement, legalized marijuana, etc.
What they should be talking about: Alderman Proco Joe Moreno threatening a Chicago citizen, unprecedented property tax increase, woman shot in Rogers Park. I also notice the Harvey Weinstein scandal has fallen from / never been on the front pages. Maybe because the media was complicit in the cover up for years?

  • You think Joe Moreno is a problem?? You truly do not know what's going on my friend. You need to scratch below the surface.

  • Alderman Moreno! How ya doin?

Potential Missing Dog on Cullom??

I saw a little white dog (little bit like a Maltese mix) without a collar at Cullom and Albany, I waited around to see if the owner was lurking somewhere but no. I tried to speak to him and approach him but he was a little timid. He walked on to Cullom & Kedzie and seemed to want to get into an apartment building where I let him in. It was 4257-59. When I walked back he wasn't in the common area, so hopefully he found his owner.

If no, I'd suggest going over to that building now.

13 Chicago Tattoo Shops Offering Friday The 13th Specials
CHICAGO (CBS) - While superstitious for some, it's a tattoo lovers holiday: Friday the 13th. Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day to most in the Western hemisphere. It occurs when the 13th day of the month falls on a Friday. The event occurs at least once every year, and sometimes up to three times a year.

Aggressive energy salesman

A guy was triple ringing the doorbell last night around 7pm Monday). He asked to review my people’s gas and comed bills. I opened the door and pointed at the sign above the doorbell that clearly stated no soliciting. His response was “what does that mean?” I told him I wasn’t interested. Then he seemed to be acting as if he was offended. Then he took an incoming call and remained on the porch. I told him to leave and he did so slowly. As he exited, he left the gate open. I then instructed him to resecure the gate, and did so while giving me a hard look. Based on demeanor alone, I wouldn’t give his employer a chance.

Family Memberships as Tax Deductions

Looking for activities for your children in the fall and winter and also a possible tax deduction? Memberships to museums, zoos, and other 501(c)(3) organizations can be a great option. These can also be a great gift to family members for the holidays.

Missing street postal boxes

This may be a rant, but it's a big concern. I walked from Waveland to Belmont (and beyond) (10 blocks) down Broadway and saw only ONE street mailbox on Patterson. No boxes all that stretch and on the side streets. To me, this is disturbing that there are no accessible street mail boxes.
Where do people mail their packages and mail? I know mail sent is down, but surely people mail bills, greeting cards, small packages. Luckily I'm near N. Marine Drive and Waveland where there's a mailbox, but I'm afraid the PO will take that one away.

I have Exciting news from Kindergarten room 109… we’re ready to update our class with a new “Smart Board” (interactive whiteboard system)! This school year (and for years to come), I want to ensure that my students have what they need to succeed, so I've created a request on a 501(c)3 charity website called DonorsChoose.org.

I'm writing to ask for any donations possible for my students - no matter the size (seriously, every little bit counts).
If you can't donate anything now, no worries... just share this information with anyone who you know is passionate about education. Your donation will have a direct impact on at least 24 students this year and you'll hear back from our class about your impact!
Here’s my classroom request:
Go to this link https://www.donorschoose.org/donors/proposal.html?id=2743674# or go to Donors Choose.org - Mrs. Daye. “Technologically Savvy in Kindergarten”
Please don’t forget to spread the word if you know anyone who may want to show their support for public schools. Please share our classroom page and contribute if you can!

HELP! Comcast upgrade to DOCSIS 3.0--modem or line problem?

Neighbors, can you help me? Comcast says my cable modem is too old and needs to be upgraded to be able to work with DOCSIS 3.0. I bought four different brands of approved modems, but none of them can get past the Upload light. My old modem was working prior to my changing it starting Wednesday evening. I called Comcast twice and we tried the modems, including my old one, but it is the same problem--is stuck on the blinking Upload and unable to move to Internet Connection. I have a service call but it is a week away and I need to have access, as I do some work from home. Any suggestions? I have asked some friends but they have no idea either. Has anyone had problems when moving from DOCSIS 2.0 to 3.0? THANK YOU!

Felicia- Service technicians have a different skill set versus call center operators and the technicians cost a lot more. Many service calls can be resolved with out the need to send out a technician. I agree that it's extremely frustrating when the operator is just reading from the script but it wouldn't be cost effective to pay a technician to sit and answer phones.

I'm also a bit surprised that the changing the connector was all that was needed. While they can fail, it's not very common. Hopefully you didn't get charged for it.

  • No, no charge for this one.

Dog Walker in West Lakeview

Can someone please tell me how much they typically charge and recommendations please? I think I found a good one already but just want to make sure we are not over paying for the service. We have a 9 week old puppy, not sure if rates differ based on that?

  • future alderman future alderman

first you're a walker, then an owner-make up your mind! and all you dog-walkers please PICK THE WASTE UP!

  • Since when are walkers not pet owners? I didn't know you couldn't be both. First I was an owner then a walker though. Actually the first company I worked for wouldn't even hire people who didn't have pets. Now that I think about it is that even legal? Can you s
    Discriminate based on pet ownership?!

Is this anyone's lost beagle?

Just found this lovely beagle in Lakeview at Janssen and Byron, 60613. It's a female, and she seems to be a bit elderly. She is all bones mostly, so I think she has been missing for at least a week. We have bathed her and fed her, and will call PAWS tomorrow. If anyone knows where I can post or if anyone has lost a beagle, Please call or message me at 404-673-0856.

Jury Duty

I've been called for jury duty for the first time. I'm scheduled for the Daley Center.

Can anyone answer the following questions:

Is there WiFi in the jury holding room?
Can we eat or drink in the jury holding room?
Should I pack a lunch or are we released to get something to eat?
It says on my summons that cameras are not permitted. Does that mean they will hold my smart phone all day because it has a camera?

Does anyone have any other words of advice?

(I really didn't know where to post this, so I picked Lake View since I live there.)

  • One tip is that depending on your place of employment, you may need to hand over the check to your employer in order to get the day off as a paid day. Check with your HR dept. Last time I was at Daley, 2 years ago, they gave an hour lunch. But seriously, if you can afford the time, I would encourage you to perform your jury duty service and not try some weak excuse to get out of it.

  • d3 NOH

You can delay it 11 weeks automatically of the first time doesn't work too.
