Carpet Cleaning Recommendations Needed, Cat Urine Stain

Hi all,

My cat (the one in my profile photo) has been peeing on my low pile carpet and the staining is present on the reverse/bottom side. The carpet is 6ft by 5ft 9in. I'm not sure of the material, but I'm guessing synthetic. I'm a renter, but the carpet was bought by the previous tenant, so it's technically mine.

I'd rather get the carpet professionally cleaned than have to buy a new one. I don't care if the color changes, I just need a way to protect the wood floors and get the odor removed. I've already tried cleaning it by hand, but given the heavy staining on the reverse/bottom size, I'm concerned it'll eventually disintegrate and maybe stain the wood flooring.

Can someone please recommend an inexpensive place to get my small low pile carpet professionally cleaned in Edgewater? Can I take it to a regular dry cleaner or no? This is my first time having to do this.

Thanks!

(My cat is medically fine. He's recently been to the vet.)

  • Mute Mute Me

Its not fair to other responsible renters with cats to not fix this behavior issue. Can u put the box where the cat is peeing? Have you tried different litters? Are you using two litterboxes for one cat? Cleaning twice a day? Tried feliway diffusers. Ive only had two cats in my adult life and both went outside the box til i prompltly investigated and the problem was fixable.sometimes removing the rug fixes the problem.

  • Cats pee outside the box for different reasons. Perhaps he or she has a medical issue or you may not be keeping it clean. I’d take your cat to the vet. This isn’t normal vevahoir and needs to be addressed in addition to cleaning the stain which hopefully is your bigger concern.

Saturday Apartment Search

A friend has a job interview this Friday that might mean he could be looking for an apartment Saturday but he is unsure of his schedule. Do you know landlords or apartment brokers that take walk-ins on Saturdays?

  • My new landlord probably would. Call 773.507.9668. They have several buildings in Rogers Park and Edgewater. They may all be 2 bedroom though.

  • You can also try my landlord. He has an apartment available.
You can text or call him at 773-510-2271. His name is John.

Break into silver 2001 bmw

Last around early morning, any where from 11:00pm-6:30am my car was broken into. $250 was stolen from my glove compartment as well as my debit card and other cards that were in the car. They also took the WHOLE change compartment as well. Always remember to lock your car doors. Happen by oakley between winnemac and argyle. If anyone has camera and captured it please message me.

  • I work midnights and wasn't locking my car doors after using it during the day expecting to be using it again "soon".Silly me - someone went thru my door pockets and glove compartment recently, might have had an emergency 20 dollar bill in the glove box, it was long ago,...

So I lost probably nothing except my naive belief that crime takes place in the wee hours - all good advice, lock doors and keep nothing of value in your vehicle , property crime is obviously up in the city - do what you can to not be a victim.Even if they don't take anything you're left with that creepy feeling of finding papers and stuff scattered all around your car, hard to shake.

  • I had the money in my car because I’m a sever and forgot to go to the bank after work because i was so tired and had to rush home because my little brother was sick.

Does anyone else miss DNAinfo?

116 people lost their jobs thanks to billionaire Joe Ricketts. It was a valuable neighborhood resource for information and discussion along with EB.

  • It is suspicious that he didn't see the business, he just shut it down. It leads me to believe it was an ideological as opposed to financial decision. How do you know he did not make a profit, or at.lwast was not on track to do so? You don't know, you are taking his word for it.

A “savvy billionaire” would be unlikely to shut down a business just because the workers unionized. But it could have been the straw that broke the camel’s back. Or just one more hassle he didn’t want to deal with to eventually, hopefully, make DNAInfo and Gothamist work.

Again, just speculation. You’d have to ask Mr. Ricketts his real reasons. Please report back!

Crosswalk Signage Needed

There is a crosswalk at the intersection of Foster and Claremont, however there are no signs in either direction notifying drivers of this. I've seen children on their way to school almost get hit by speeding cars attempting to make the light at Western and Foster. This needs fixing immediately. I've requested 311 to do this at least 6 times over the summer. So far....

  • Bob Kastigar 15 Years North Park, bike rider, retired

It's not 'walk one block' - it's TWO blocks: one was to, and one way back from.

Cars should stop for pedestrians. What has a one-way street got to do with this question?

I saw a driver stop for pedestrians, that's the polite and sensitive thing to do, instead of drivers complaining on Every Block about things that get in their way and slow them down.

  • Citizen Pain Citizen Pain

Cars should respect pedestrians if the pedestrians are using a crosswalk. If the pedestrians are jaywalking the cars should also stop (of course) sans the respect part. That's the civilized way.

Question about sewer gas smell

Hello, Wanted to see if the community had any insight about a building issue.

This past summer our building had the catch basin outside the basement cleared out of sludge. The following day we noticed a sewer gas odor inside the basement area closest to the catch basin. Seemed like it was coming from the inside drain.

We've poured water down the drain, thinking maybe the trap was dry, but it didn't do much for the odor.

I'm not sure whether or how the drains are connected, or if there's a ready fix for the odor.

Any insights would be appreciated! Thank you.

  • Not like paint thinner to me.

  • @MikeGoode appreciate the offer. We're still discussing as a building a good way forward. @DJH no, definitely not like paint thinner. Much more like the smell you get walking near Chicago manholes on a hot day, or by the river.

Last night walking home from the L around 10:45pm. I saw a black kid - 15-18? - trying the handles of all the cars on Claremont north of Lawrence. He then crossed Lawrence and tried the handles of all the cars in the lot where the CorePower and PureBarre are (I did call 911). Then when I got home (2600 block of W Carmen) my mail had been dumped and only catalogs were left scattered around. I hope nothing important was stolen (yes, I have LifeLock). Stay vigilant.

Yes 911 was called & they quickly ran off down Lawrence when a neighbor yelled at them.

Apartments?

Just curious if anyone in Ravenswood/Lincoln square have any other resources for looking at apartments in the area? As opposed to craigslist - for all intensive purposes is fine. But I feel there are people in the area who own townhomes that have rentals and just don't feel the need to put them online? Perhaps it relates to just walking around the area and looking for signs.

anyone have any thoughts?

  • If you want a quality place, go to a realtor. It will cost you nothing because the property owner pays. I'm a landlady and I assure you I would never use Craig's list..

  • Andrew Carpenter Realtor Edgewater home owner and Chicago Reator

I'd be happy to help and it might surprise you that you would be able to buy instead of rent. A condo in Ravenswood can be had for under $1200 per month including everything but utilities. There are down payment assistance programs to help you with the initial cost of home ownership.

if you have to buy liability insurance why should you have to pay a security deposit or move-in fee? answer-you shouldn't. so yeah, i'll pay 12 bucks a month instead of your draconian move-in fee.

  • Oh hi! You either live in my building or another managed by the same company! My individual renters policy met the requirements. I just called my agent and had them add the management company. Super easy!

Gunshots in Edgewater

Did anyone else hear what sounded like 5 gunshots just before 2am this morning? It seemed to be around Balmoral and Sheridan.

  • My wife and I were up talking when we heard the shots. We called the police instantaneously. From where we are we could not see anything. But it sounded like the shots were coming from Sheridan and Balmoral.

  • There was also 5 gunshots this last Friday at the same time around Wolcott and Touhy friends said.

What's happening to our neighborhood?

Been in Ravenswood 30+ years in the same house and over the last few years I've seen more and more younger families move into the neighborhood which is not a bad thing it's a breath of fresh air to see the community grow and flourish but the amount of racism that has come with it is sad especially when your told "This is my neighborhood you don't belong here" from a couple young enough to be your children that is fairly new to the neighborhood so the question is do you believe we are losing our charm as a family friendly neighborhood to these young transplants?

  • robin in WRP I support a 28th Amendment 4Free & Fair Elections!

There are many neighborhood schools that parents are clamoring to get their kids into! Off the top of my head, Rogers, Blaine, Wildwood

  • smartypants Be Nice

Robin, true, but Blaine, Coonley, Bell, Hawthorne, Nettlehorst, etc. are not in affordable neighborhoods....even for renters. I don't know of anyone clamoring to get into Rogers but would be thrilled if that happens.

Humidifier Installation?

Hi,
I'm interested in installing a Humidamist humidifer in my condo, as my furnace enclosure isn't large enough to accommodate anything else. I'm interested in if anyone else has installed these units, and what sort of experience you've had, as well as who you used to install them.
Thanks,
Chris

Angela Kinney, a Chemistry teacher at Chicago Math and Science Academy (CMSA), has been selected by the University of Chicago for their Outstanding Educator Award. Ms. Kinney teaches AP Chemistry, Honors Chemistry and regular Chemistry as well as College Readiness Science.

The Outstanding Educator Award has been in existence for over three decades. First-year students are asked to nominate an educator who has influenced them, challenged them, or helped them grow intellectually. “We receive letters back from hundreds of students, inspired by teachers who have changed the course of their lives, who taught them to re-imagine texts, to delve deeper into problem-solving, and to think beyond the border of the classroom in the pursuit of their own education,” said James G. Nondorf, state Vice President of Enrollment for the University of Chicago.

Ms. Kinney’s recognition marks the first time a teacher at CMSA has received this award. Ms. Kinney received her Master’s in teaching from North Park University in 2013. She is currently working on her second degree in biology from Northeastern Illinois University. She was born and raised in Cadillac, Michigan and spent five years in an undergraduate program at Michigan State University.

“I am beyond honored and it makes my heart happy that I have impacted students through science and through being human. This award is an amazing reminder of how important our work as teachers is to our students, and what impact we have on their future,” explains Ms. Kinney.

Since 2004, it has been the mission of CMSA, located in the Rogers Park community, to prepare students for college and the world beyond by offering high-quality, college-prep, STEM-focused education that changes the trajectory of students’ lives.
