Found this beautiful cat with no chip or tag!

Gorgeous tabby that followed me to my home and walked inside. I fed him some milk and chicken but he didn’t eat. I’m not sure what to do.

  • Take him to a vets office and have him scanned for a chip. Vets office will tell you what to do from there.

  • Thank you! He found his home :)

  • FYI please don't give cats milk to drink, they are lactose intolerant. Give them water instead.

Car break in

My daughter’s car was broken into on the 1800 of Belle Plaine in the middle of the night, as was my neighbor’s truck. Both cars had alarms. We don’t see anything missint unless there was change in the car and the neighbor was only missing change as well. Just wanted to give a heads up. Anyone have suggestions for cheap auto glass replacement. Someone suggested Fernando’s but it looks like theymay be closed today.

Tree trimming on public land...

We have a tree out front that is growing into our home's front. We would like to prune/trim it but are unsure if we are allowed.

Does anybody know if trimming or pruning a tree on the public side of the sidewalk is "legal"?

  • Scott Concertman - Is THAT the reason the city trees look so bad? I've seen that whole 'lion tale' effect for several years now - didn't know it had an official name, I just called it a high and tight - all the lower branches stripped off and just a...

Scott Concertman - Is THAT the reason the city trees look so bad? I've seen that whole 'lion tale' effect for several years now - didn't know it had an official name, I just called it a high and tight - all the lower branches stripped off and just a few sprouts left at the very top. Trees aren't hair - if you take away all the greenery, not only does it weaken the tree's architecture, it starves them. I wondered at the logic of it, now I know...there isn't any. I guess we just have to resolve watching the trees we have left die off slowly because of poor husbandry. Which way to the tree museum?

(BTW, don't mound up soil/mulch around the base of your trees - that's another way to strangle them to a slow death!)

  • The city owned tree in front of my house needed a few branches cut back, since they were resting on my roof. I just used a pole trimmer and trimmed away. Never thought about calling the city. That was several years ago and it still continues to thrive.

North Park Elementary School Celebrates as Chicago High School Acceptance Letters Roll In

North Park Elementary School (NPES), a small, independent school in Chicago’s North Center neighborhood, is pleased to congratulate its 2018 graduating class of eighth graders on their acceptance to the high schools of their choice. Of the school’s 17 eight graders, 13 were accepted to one of Chicago Public School’s selective enrollment high schools, highly-competitive schools that accept only 1 in 5 applicants. Additionally, two NPES eighth graders were accepted to prestigious magnet programs, Double Honors and Instrumental Music, at Lincoln Park High School. And two NPES eighth graders were accepted to Beacon Academy, an independent school in Evanston that matches a challenging IB curriculum with methods of Montessori.

NPES has gained a reputation over the years for its challenging curriculum and supportive, close-knit school community, both of which school administrators and parents credit for NPES’ long-running track record of placing 100% of its students into the high schools of their choice.

“We are so proud of the ways that we prepare our kids for their lives after NPES. The richness and rigor of our instructional curriculum sets a critical foundation, leading our kids to impressive results with the Chicago testing,” said Dr. Randy Needlman, Head of School at North Park Elementary. “Simultaneously, NPES provides a safe, caring environment in which students can learn to communicate effectively, understand their place as members of a global community, and ultimately become leaders in their high schools and beyond. “

NPES has approximately 240 students, preschool through eighth grade, and a dedicated faculty who develop strong relationships with their students throughout their tenures at the school.

"The entire school community is celebrating our 8th graders as if they were their own children – that’s the kind of closeness we have at NPES,” Needlman added.

  • Neighborhood Dad 27-year resident of North Center/St Bens/Lincol...

Involved parents/guardians are a huge asset. To each student; to the school; to the community; etc.

I’m not sure what a “fancy” education is. It’s elementary school. Teach them to read, write, and do math. Some fine and performing arts electives. A language. And encourage/shape them into good kids who will become good adults.

  • We looked at a couple of private schools that I thought were very “fancy” with beautiful buildings and grounds and a wide variety of offerings — and a price tag to match! NPES wasn’t one of these. That’s all I meant. I don’t think any of that “fanciness” is necessary either to have a good education and produce an amazing kid.

I saw a man in a wheelchair being pulled by a German Shepherd.

The dog was really struggling trying to pull plus he was way off to the side and was totally out of balance to pull.

He, also, had put an fairly large orange plastic safety cone around the dog's neck I guess his goal was to balance it on the dog's head for visibility but the cone had slipped off and was hanging from the dog's neck.

Sure looked like animal abuse to me but I'm not sure of the rules regarding service dogs, if in fact this poor dog was a "service dog."

If I see him again should I report it - to the Humane Society or ???

  • Becky - would you have a moment to contact the Anti-Cruelty Society? They have field service investigators. I've never worked with them but here is an excerpt from the ACS website .... "if you see any of the above signs or observe unusual or suspicious behavior involving an animal, contact our state approved investigators at 312-645-8090 or email abuse@anticruelty.org". This could be a good resource. Thank you for caring about this dog's well being.

Litter

Is anyone else as annoyed by the amount of litter they see outside? When I walk around our neighborhood, I see countless bottles, cans, cups, wrappers, straws, etc on the sidewalk and the street. This is also true for our parks and schools. I've even found several beer bottles at Coonley over the past few weeks. I try to do my part and pick up 3-4 pieces of trash anytime I am out for a walk with my kids or to/from the L. I just can't understand how rude you have to be to throw garbage on the ground.

  • Neighborhood Dad 27-year resident of North Center/St Bens/Lincol...

K - London did that in the 80's to combat the IRA. I doubt Chicago does it for bombs. Although I'm sure they use it as a reason. It's simply cost cutting. Fewer cans, theroretically fewer staff to empty and maintain them. Seems shortsighted but it won't change.

  • on the south side the trash can is just open you car window and throw it out.

It was not immediately clear when Ruth, of the 6300 block of South King Drive, was scheduled to appear for a bond hearing.

Classic Trib article. They blatantly post these stories before any kind of fact checking. If you read the article you'd think the second offender bailed after the driver hit some cars in the River North area. Completely untrue. The car did in fact enter the drive at Irving with police in pursuit, but soon exited at Belmont and sped down side streets before fleeing down Broadway/Clark. The passenger bailed somewhere on Broadway. He was taken into custody a short time later. The driver resumed the chase, eventually getting back on the drive at Fullerton and later taking officers on a wild goose chase thru the River North neighborhood. Unclear if the driver hit any vehicles, I've heard different reports, (one report that the drivers hit each other trying to avoid the offender) but the chase did not end with an accident. It was eventually terminated by police at Kinzie and LaSalle when the offender was lost in heavy downtown traffic, and the police did not want to put anymore bystanders in danger.

Furniture donation?

In an effort to make our spare bedroom less of a hoarder's cave, we are looking to get rid of some furniture we've outgrown (mostly baby's room furniture). We have a glider chair, changing table, and a few other pieces that are clean and in usable condition. Anybody know a good place to donate where these could go to new moms or families who would appreciate them?

  • Just a heads up, I contacted Humble Design Chicago and they are no longer accepting furniture donations.

  • Thanks for the update, Katie! I reached out to my contact at Humble Design Chicago who confirmed the warehouse is pretty full of big furniture items but they remain in need of the following household goods, if anyone is looking to unload:

-Kitchen- any small appliances (microwaves, toasters, crock pots), dishes, pots/pans, baking sheets, cutting boards, utensils, placemats, etc.
    -Bathroom- towels, trinkets, shower curtains
-Knick Knacks- vases, candles, baskets, book ends, etc.

Gunshots near Damen & Berteau

Did anyone else hear 3 gunshots at about 9:15PM (4/8) near Damen and Bearteau? I did call it in...

  • Peter in Northcenter Northcenter resident

Can confirm, heard them while watching TV, looked out my window facing that intersection and saw the fireworks in the air. No problems.

  • d3 NOH

Well fireworks are illegal so I wouldn't say no problems if they are being shot off and response ignored when it's only April.
