Found Cat Tabby with white chest and paws male

Grace and Narragansett Ave. Very affectionate. Checking tomorrow if microchipped. Posting on Lost Cats Illinois - Facebook as well. Very nice boy - was very hungry. I bathed his chest and paws so his picture might not be a very good representation. In my home tonight and my own cats are in the basement. Let me know if you or someone you know is missing this guy.

Last night my former Tom Cat came into my bedroom - the two stared each other down for a few minutes than the stray attacked my Tom Cat (now neutered) - all is well, but no, I don't think he is ready for the "general population" in my house. I am getting him all his vaccinations, etc. dewormed etc. (haven't seen signs of worms or fleas) and then he is getting neutered Dec. 5. After that I will try to find him a home. I will post today flyers around the neighborhood, but I think he is one of the few that hang around here, eating when they can out of neighbors' garbage.

New Mexican Restaurant

Hey Everyone,

Noticed a sign a few doors down from the Binny's (in the old Pineda's Taco spot) that a Mexican restaurant is opening soon.

This little shopping center is really shaping up to be a great place. Looking forward to it.

  • joanie 20+ year Resident of Jefferson Park

    Good to know, thanks.

  • I saw a food truck parked on that strip. It was from Taco Grill and Salsa Bar. We tried it and enjoyed it. They have a salsa bar on board the food truck, yummy.
www.TacoGrillAurora.com is their website for anyone interested in checking out. They do cater, it said so on their truck.

Chicago's Safest And Most Dangerous Neighborhoods Based On Shootings
Last week I posted on Chicago's safest and most dangerous neighborhoods based on the murder rate. Although that's a pretty popular way for people to make a determination of a neighborhood's relative safety it's actually a pretty narrow definition. A lot of bad things an happen to people without them getting murdered.

I was looking at NYC and their numbers are significantly lower. For a city larger than ours, anyone know what they are doing that Chicago is not?

  • Weebis SWCC Vet. (Ret.)

Checkout Heyjackass.com. They have a lot of data on murders and shootings in Chicongo by neighborhood.

The clearance rate on homicides is absolutely pathetic. Bad detective work or "no snitch" culture, or both?

Hi neighbors. If you live on Cornelia west of Long where the Peoples Gas/NPL line work has been taking place over the past few weeks, be sure to carefully inspect your home's foundation, walls and ceilings.

In our home, the ceilings closest to the street where the work has been taking place are showing a substantial amount cracking since they started work in late October.

For those who aren't home during working hours, the work currently taking place requires a substantial amount of pounding that actually "shakes" your home from the bottom up.

I have contacted the Alderman's office as well as People's Gas directly about this, but wanted to spread the word to those who might be similarly affected and not even know it.

As new gas lines came in a few years back, I watched heavy equipment get driven over yards and sidewalks, damaging both. I pressed for replacement and they sent some jerkw@d who showed me lo-res photo captures he said came from video taken prior to the work. The images seemed to depict the new damage as pre-existing, with blurs or debris obscuring all detail, like they'd been messed with in Photoshop. I wasn't buyin it and said the coloring in the images looked weird, like before and after frames were put into one, the guy gave-up and marked the damaged sections for replacement.

XSport on Irving Park - Lock your doors!

Hey neighbors! My husband returned to his car after a workout to find a young man rummaging through the trunk of our car. The young man then got into an awaiting car and they drove off slowly. Yes, my husband called the police but he hasn't heard anything regarding filing a report, go figure.

  • My son has had 2 thefts at different XSport locations from the lockers... I think they are running their own theft ring myself... they don't give a rat about doing anything about it either... one was Lakeview and the other was either Portage or Norridge... I mean you have cameras, why are you not catching the scumbags doing this? Pathetic!

Old Irving: Safe?

Hi,

I'm considering moving to Old Irving Park, and am wondering about safety. Do you feel safe walking around the neighborhood in the evening? Also, I saw on the Chicago Tribune homicide tracker that there have been 3 murders to date in the area, and only 6 total last year. Seems like crime is becoming more of a problem.

Specifically, I'm curious about the area south of Irving, north of Addison, and west of the freeway to Kilbourn.

Thanks in advance for your input.

  • My Daughter and SIL live in old Irving and are very happy there although the school is a lottery they have there kids at St Viator’s. My SIL is a realator.... if interested message me. This is there 2nd home in OI, it took the better part of a year to find it. Good Luck!

Can I borrow a Large cat crate?

I recently rescued a stray cat from my backyard but need to train her to use litter box. I was hoping someone had a large cage that could fit a litter box and bed that I can perhaps borrow?

  • Try laser-pointing a twisting trail to treats for happy and nimble cats. :-)

Apparently a world full of garbage doesn't bother some people. If they're driving, it's even easier. They drop it in someone else's neighborhood and don't have to look at it. Then it looks like WE are the ones who don't care.

Ald. Arena pledges to bring 50 CHA units to the ward
by BRIAN NADIG Alderman John Arena (45th) has pledged to bring 50 Chicago Housing Authority-sponsored apartments to the 45th Ward by the end of his term in the spring of 2019. Arena and six other aldermen recently signed the pledge as part of an effort that they say will help end segregation on the North and Northwest Side.
    http://nadignewspapers.com
  • It would have been totally different if Arena didn't declare war on his constituents. I found out back in April the state wasn't going to fund this fiasco and the more people like RR continue, the less likely 5150 will come to pass.

  • noman50 in this together

Isn’t it part of Arena’s responsibility to at least make an attempt to sell his aspirational projects to constituents in his ward? You know, work with the people living around here, who have some “skin in the game” on major ideas bubbling up by the powers that be. I would think that if he feels very strongly about an issue he would want to effectively marshal as much public support. Or doesn’t he think this kind of way of governance is possible?

Do you want to provide an outdoor kitty with a heated home during winter?

I bought this one on Amazon and we love it, the kitty loves it too. It was only about $45. There are so many feral cats in our area and they keep the rat population to a minimum for us so the least we can do is provide homes for some of them. If you have a covered outdoor area with an outlet you can plug this in, takes very minimal power to run. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004ZJOH06/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 here is a picture of the kitty in my backyard enjoying her house.

AAFES to Open Online Shopping to Veterans
From an Army and Air Force Exchange Service News Release

DALLAS, Oct. 23, 2017 — With less than a month until the much-anticipated official launch of the veterans online shopping benefit, more than 225,000 honorably discharged veterans have already been verified to shop at online military exchange websites when the sites open to veterans Nov. 11.

The Army and Air Force Exchange Service online shopping benefit is the first military exchange benefits expansion in nearly 30 years. Beginning on Veterans Day, America’s 18.5 million veterans will be able to shop online at the military exchange websites: ShopMyExchange.com, shopcgx.com, mymcx.com, and mynavyexchange.com.

Shopping the military exchanges online provides veterans an opportunity to reconnect with their military community, allowing these soldiers, airmen, sailors, Marines and Coast Guard “members for life” to save money with tax-free shopping and military exclusive pricing while also supporting critical military quality-of-life programs.

postal service

Suggest people with postal problems email congressman Mike Quigley. His office helped me when I complained about postal employees parking in "No Parking" areas while they walk around delivering mail on our narrow streets, and causing dangerous conditions at intersections.

The original post is well meaning but not very effective. The Executive branch, not Congress, is responsible for how US government agencies and department operate. The influence of your local Congressman on the USPS is limited, since all Congress does with the USPS is approve their requests for rate increases and budgets and changes to the days upon which mau[il is delivered.

The USPS is organised like a private business, which means that the local postmasters are responsible to regional managers and to the independent security group that monitors mail for theft and mishandling, the Postal Inspectors.

Each post office has service complaint forms which go to the local PO's postmaster. ou keep a paper copy. The online USPS.com website has a similar form which is sent to the office of the Postmaster Generl, and copied to the postal Inspection group and the local postmaster. I recommend the online form because it cannot be intercepted or lost. You can print a copy of your online submission, which gets a tracking number.

Regarding paying bills online, many people, including those who use online services are unclear on how it works.

The way to minimise your chances of identity theft is to limit the number of organizations with whom you voluntarily share personal information. Paying bills is not a leak of the information needed for identity theft. At most, it can be used in combination with public information to compromise that particular account.

Whether you physically mail a paper check or have your bank handle the transaction, the information in that transaction is the same. The one easiest to be lost or stolen is USPS mail.

If you wish to reduce exposure of personal information, do not directly pay bills at each payees site by credit card; have your bank do it. Set up the payments with them, they use direct electronic transfer when possible and send checks at no cost to you when not. Those payments contain the account number that the merchant has assigned to you and the bank's account number, not yours.

You can use online bank payment services just like writing checks. You can maintain a check register, enter the transaction number and amount assigned to each payment. If a paper check mailed by the bank does not clear within 10 business days, your bankl notifies you. You can print copies of transactions individually, or in groups. Most banks will still mail you a monthly paper statement unless you opt for email.

When necessary to pay at a website, use Paypal or a similar service, which will not reveal your credit card number to the merchant, or one of the credit cards with 0 liability for online fraud. When possible, using an aggregation site like Amazon, Alibaba or Walmart will let you buy from many merchants while sharing limted crdit card account information only with the aggregator.

Congratulations St. John's Lutheran Volleyball on reaching #4 in the state LSL tournament!

I think one of the students on the team (A.J.) said it best: "Although we weren't satisfied with the end result, I don't think any of us could be unhappy with our play this season. We truly played our hearts out and no one ever dreamed of going this far in the state tournament. I'm very proud of the way we carried ourselves this whole year. We truly played our hearts out and no one ever dreamed of going this far in the state tournament. I'm very proud of the way we carried ourselves this whole year. We played non-selfish volleyball while representing God throughout the whole year. We couldn't have had better coaches and parents to help us get to this point in our season. This season, and especially this weekend, has been so much fun. We have put in a lot of work, and it has paid off. I will always remember this tournament and all the great people I had the privilege to play with. All these guys are amazing volleyball players and all of us greatly improved as individuals and as a team. This has been one of the best experiences I've had during my time at St. John's, and I will never forget it. Good job eagles!"

Homeless Man On Six Corners

I haven't seen the homeless man that sits in the bus enclosure on Irving park near cicero for about 2 weeks now. He is the man that never begs and has been out there a few years now. Does anyone know what happen to him?

  • Kapel2 Neighborhood Resident

Thank you Lindsey for being so instrumental in helping Joe and so many other local homeless folks re-integrate into a more normal life. You are truly a blessing to the community! As time allows I will send you and/or Gayle a note as to how my wife and I came to know about Joe and we will be sending another card for him and making a donation to HTH ministries.

  • Kapel Local Resident

Hi Lindsey P L, I am getting ready to send a donation to HTH Ministries and was wondering if Joe is still in the nursing home and basically how he's doing. I will be sending a card for him with the donation if you guys still have contact with him.

Knox Studio Water Tower - what's up?

Anyone know what's happening with the water tower that looms over Knox Studios? I noticed they have a crane above it and workers on top. I hope they're just doing some repairs - I'd really hate to see them take it down. It's sort of a landmark and has an "urban decay" look going - I'd miss it if it's gone.

  • They’re taking it down. Wasn’t structurally safe anymore

  • Yeah, I spoke to them as it was coming down. Apparently the City was making them do improvements and it was going to run more to fix it vs. just take it down.

What's interesting was that Knox wanted to fix it up a few years back and "brand" it...

What's interesting was that Knox wanted to fix it up a few years back and "brand" it as part of their studio and they were told they couldn't because it was a Historical Landmark - yet they could just tear it down????

I know not related, but to me this was a cool structure that's been there since 1919, almost 100 years - just gone. We also just had to tear down the Bank building at 6 Corners and now have a lovely hole that just sits there - and this is progress?

Presidential Proclamation Honoring the Victims of the Sutherland Springs, Texas Shooting

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

We are deeply saddened by the shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas, which took the lives of more than 25 innocent victims while they were attending church. As we mourn the victims of this unprovoked act of violence, we pray for healing and comfort for all the family members and loved ones who are grieving.

As a mark of respect for the victims of this senseless act of violence perpetrated on November 5, 2017, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, November 9, 2017. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this fifth day of November, in the year of our Lord two thousand seventeen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-second.

DONALD J. TRUMP

**Unable to lower your flag?
Attaching this black ribbon to the top of a U.S. flag is an acceptable alternative for flags that cannot be lowered to half-staff. See the attached picture.

Central and Waveland

There was a question asked in another thread about what the status is at the empty lot at Central and Waveland. There was a meeting at Chicago academy in the spring about a Alzheimer’s memory development to be built. Is this one going to stay vacant as long as the Belmont and Narragansett site?

  • Maggiemay 45 year resident @ PP

I'm surprised they haven't found any dead body in there yet. It's gonna turn into a dumping ground soon

  • This is another project just like the one at Belmont and Narragansett that just sits. It’s a shame there is no transparency with Villegas. Locking back it’s a good thing many residents got involved in stopping Villegas from pushing thru that section-8 housing development. Everyone should be Leary of what is going on with these 2 areas.

FOUND SIAMESE

On Saturday night, we found a Siamese cat around keystone and montrose. He is a young un-neutered male. Very sweet, and not chipped. Please note, this is not the missing cat named Jon Snow.
