Hi Everyone,

In preparation for winter, our 501(c)(3) organization builds 100 feral cat houses every year. We believe it is up to us to help protect the cats in our community and they need the protection from our harsh Chicago winters. These houses are the difference between life and death for our communities cats. The cost per house is $30.00. However, If you buy in bulk (3) or more, we will sell them for a reduced rate of $25.00 per house. We will only be accepting cash or check written out to Whiskers & Tails. The money raised from these shelters goes directly back to the cats in our community for Trap-Neuter-Return and Trap-Neuter-Adopt vetting. These shelters will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis (No Holds). So try to get yours early! You can get them at our friend's wonderful establishments during these following days and times;

  • Feral cars are always outside.

Alley commotion early thursday (10.20.17)

Around 1:20am Thursday morning, I woke up to noise in the alley between Gresham and Elbridge. Sounded like trash cans being dragged and knocked over. Heard it repeat several times and then stop. This morning, I saw at least 4 garbage cans on their side. I imagine there were more that had been picked up already. My first thought is punk kids, but that seems a little late for just jerk kids' behavior. My second thought was someone was trying to see into backyards or gauge a response to alley noise. Anyone else see or hear anything? I didn't call 911 because i felt silly calling about trash cans being knocked over, but I'm feeling a little on edge after hearing gun shots a couple weeks ago, seeing more gang graffiti and the gang related murder on our block last week. Maybe I should call it in next time...

New construction taxes

Can’t seem to find this answer anywhere. New construction taxes are based on the land value. At what point do they become reassessed that a house has been built?

Is it when the house is done? Or is it when the house is sold/occupied.
Everything I find just talks about the new tax bill, but I’m looking for when the city considers it is a house and not land.

  • The Assessor is supposed to monitor new construction permits and update the assessment file accordingly. These projects are not picked up automatically during the triennial reassessment, since the triennial will reassess every property in the City. The assessor does not drive by every property in the City every three years.

  • The case that I cited was one of two houses that were built by the same developer at the same time. The other house was reclassified within three years. No explanation as to why they weren't both reclassified (except clout).

Not a courteous dog owner

I walked by this today in front of the church at Byron and Whipple. They have signs out asking pet owners to pick up their dog waste.

This "courteous" neighbor left this on the sidewalk no less than 20 feet from a sign.

  • So... you photographed dos poop for the internet so we could all see it? I suppose that's only fair.

The window is on the rear part of our home, on what would have originally been the back stairwell that at some point was fully enclosed and extended the length of the home. I have no idea how old it is. The weird thing is that it has started to leak today, about three days after the rain stopped. Water seems to be dripping out from between the wood laminate wall covering and the frame. Not sure if it is coming through from the roof or what. Any names would be greatly appreciated!

On a side note I contacted one large company but they actually required all those named on the mortgage to be present in order to just give me a quote. I think I am capable of making a decision without my wife being present, as I know she would be as well. Not interested in a hard sell. Just a hard worker!

  • K in North Center longtime North Side resident

Just used these folks. Not sure of their work long-term, but they fixed a window that other window companies couldn't fix and/or couldn't replace -- or the replacement cost was $2,500.

What the media is concerned about: The soda tax, the Cubs, the Bears, the Blackhawks, Trump's next bowel movement, legalized marijuana, etc.
What they should be talking about: Alderman Proco Joe Moreno threatening a Chicago citizen, unprecedented property tax increase, woman shot in Rogers Park. I also notice the Harvey Weinstein scandal has fallen from / never been on the front pages. Maybe because the media was complicit in the cover up for years?

Potential Missing Dog on Cullom??

I saw a little white dog (little bit like a Maltese mix) without a collar at Cullom and Albany, I waited around to see if the owner was lurking somewhere but no. I tried to speak to him and approach him but he was a little timid. He walked on to Cullom & Kedzie and seemed to want to get into an apartment building where I let him in. It was 4257-59. When I walked back he wasn't in the common area, so hopefully he found his owner.

If no, I'd suggest going over to that building now.

He started yelling at people, including a woman pushing her baby in a stroller. I called the police, told him I called the police, he started yelling at me and walked away. I was there at least 20 more minutes. Police never showed. I don't care what this man's mental status is but scaring a woman and baby in a park is inexcusable.

The reason why this guy would be back weeks later at Horner park is because you can't "lock" away people in mental institutions anymore. I have lived this nightmare with my own brother. Decades ago families could legally "commit" a mentally ill family member to either a private or state run facility if a doctor and the family deemed the person was a danger to themselves and others. A danger to themselves was living in the streets and drinking all day in the simplest cases. Not the case anymore. We don't have a way to help these people legally and there aren't enough facilities anyway. The most frustrating part is that a person who is mentally ill doesn't believe they are mentally ill. Big pharma sold a load of bung down the river with their push of psychotropic drugs-just pop a pill and you'll be fine. Well who is going to make sure the mentally ill person takes their meds? Families. Then when the person decides that they aren't sick anymore they stop. Then they act out. Then they either get kicked out or walk out and boom, Homeless and now society's problem. Then they feel bad so-they self medicate with alcohol or streets drugs. And laws changed and the government pulled the money out. That is why the homeless problem and the addiction problem is growing in the United States.

  • Thanks for sharing what I'm sure is a night mare situation and we can only hope that the medical professions, society and us as people advance enough to truly help one another.

Aggressive energy salesman

A guy was triple ringing the doorbell last night around 7pm Monday). He asked to review my people’s gas and comed bills. I opened the door and pointed at the sign above the doorbell that clearly stated no soliciting. His response was “what does that mean?” I told him I wasn’t interested. Then he seemed to be acting as if he was offended. Then he took an incoming call and remained on the porch. I told him to leave and he did so slowly. As he exited, he left the gate open. I then instructed him to resecure the gate, and did so while giving me a hard look. Based on demeanor alone, I wouldn’t give his employer a chance.

Missing street postal boxes

This may be a rant, but it's a big concern. I walked from Waveland to Belmont (and beyond) (10 blocks) down Broadway and saw only ONE street mailbox on Patterson. No boxes all that stretch and on the side streets. To me, this is disturbing that there are no accessible street mail boxes.
Where do people mail their packages and mail? I know mail sent is down, but surely people mail bills, greeting cards, small packages. Luckily I'm near N. Marine Drive and Waveland where there's a mailbox, but I'm afraid the PO will take that one away.

This school year (and for years to come), I want to ensure that my students have what they need to succeed, so I've created a request on a 501(c)3 charity website called DonorsChoose.org.

I'm writing to ask for any donations possible for my students - no matter the size (seriously, every little bit counts).
If you can't donate anything now, no worries... just share this information with anyone who you know is passionate about education. Your donation will have a direct impact on at least 24 students this year and you'll hear back from our class about your impact!

I have a service call but it is a week away and I need to have access, as I do some work from home. Any suggestions? I have asked some friends but they have no idea either. Has anyone had problems when moving from DOCSIS 2.0 to 3.0? THANK YOU!

Many service calls can be resolved with out the need to send out a technician. I agree that it's extremely frustrating when the operator is just reading from the script but it wouldn't be cost effective to pay a technician to sit and answer phones.

I'm also a bit surprised that the changing the connector was all that was needed. While they can fail, it's not very common. Hopefully you didn't get charged for it.

  • No, no charge for this one.

If you have a budget in mind I would be happy to help you search any neighborhood in Chicago and I would also be willing to go take a video for you because you can't physically be there to see it. We could even do a video call so you can ask questions while I'm there.

Dog Walker in West Lakeview

Can someone please tell me how much they typically charge and recommendations please? I think I found a good one already but just want to make sure we are not over paying for the service. We have a 9 week old puppy, not sure if rates differ based on that?

first you're a walker, then an owner-make up your mind! and all you dog-walkers please PICK THE WASTE UP!

  • Since when are walkers not pet owners? I didn't know you couldn't be both. First I was an owner then a walker though. Actually the first company I worked for wouldn't even hire people who didn't have pets. Now that I think about it is that even legal? Can you s
    Discriminate based on pet ownership?!

Is this anyone's lost beagle?

Just found this lovely beagle in Lakeview at Janssen and Byron, 60613. It's a female, and she seems to be a bit elderly. She is all bones mostly, so I think she has been missing for at least a week. We have bathed her and fed her, and will call PAWS tomorrow. If anyone knows where I can post or if anyone has lost a beagle, Please call or message me at 404-673-0856.

Jury Duty

I've been called for jury duty for the first time. I'm scheduled for the Daley Center.

Can anyone answer the following questions:

Is there WiFi in the jury holding room?
Can we eat or drink in the jury holding room?
Should I pack a lunch or are we released to get something to eat?
It says on my summons that cameras are not permitted. Does that mean they will hold my smart phone all day because it has a camera?

Does anyone have any other words of advice?

(I really didn't know where to post this, so I picked Lake View since I live there.)

  • One tip is that depending on your place of employment, you may need to hand over the check to your employer in order to get the day off as a paid day. Check with your HR dept. Last time I was at Daley, 2 years ago, they gave an hour lunch. But seriously, if you can afford the time, I would encourage you to perform your jury duty service and not try some weak excuse to get out of it.

You can delay it 11 weeks automatically of the first time doesn't work too.
