Hi Everyone,

In preparation for winter, our 501(c)(3) organization builds 100 feral cat houses every year. We believe it is up to us to help protect the cats in our community and they need the protection from our harsh Chicago winters. These houses are the difference between life and death for our communities cats. The cost per house is $30.00. However, If you buy in bulk (3) or more, we will sell them for a reduced rate of $25.00 per house. We will only be accepting cash or check written out to Whiskers & Tails. The money raised from these shelters goes directly back to the cats in our community for Trap-Neuter-Return and Trap-Neuter-Adopt vetting. These shelters will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis (No Holds). So try to get yours early! • I think an important thing to realize here is advocating tnr gives the false impression to irresponsible cat guardians that its ok for cats to go outside and roam freely.

  • Feral cars are always outside.

White and grey cat found in Logan Square/Humboldt Park close to Mozart and California!

I found this beautiful little baby on my porch when I left for work this morning! Not sure if M/F but I tried to get pics of their markings. Looked sort of young. No collar or tags but could be microchipped? Poor little raincloud seemed tired and hungry. Didn't run away from me and came to the water bowl to drink, but wasn't trusting enough to ask for scritches or try to snuggle me. Does anyone have suggestions of pages where I should post these pics? Please share this and let me know if any of your friends are missing their fur baby!

Alley commotion early thursday (10.20.17)

Around 1:20am Thursday morning, I woke up to noise in the alley between Gresham and Elbridge. Sounded like trash cans being dragged and knocked over. Heard it repeat several times and then stop. This morning, I saw at least 4 garbage cans on their side. I imagine there were more that had been picked up already. My first thought is punk kids, but that seems a little late for just jerk kids' behavior. My second thought was someone was trying...

Anyone else see or hear anything? I didn't call 911 because i felt silly calling about trash cans being knocked over, but I'm feeling a little on edge after hearing gun shots a couple weeks ago, seeing more gang graffiti and the gang related murder on our block last week. Maybe I should call it in next time...

New construction taxes

Can’t seem to find this answer anywhere. New construction taxes are based on the land value. At what point do they become reassessed that a house has been built?

Is it when the house is done? Or is it when the house is sold/occupied.
Everything I find just talks about the new tax bill, but I’m looking for when the city considers it is a house and not land.

  • The Assessor is supposed to monitor new construction permits and update the assessment file accordingly. These projects are not picked up automatically during the triennial reassessment, since the triennial will reassess every property in the City. The assessor does not drive by every property in the City every three years.

  • The case that I cited was one of two houses that were built by the same developer at the same time. The other house was reclassified within three years. No explanation as to why they weren't both reclassified (except clout).

Not a courteous dog owner

I walked by this today in front of the church at Byron and Whipple. They have signs out asking pet owners to pick up their dog waste.

This "courteous" neighbor left this on the sidewalk no less than 20 feet from a sign.

  • So... you photographed dos poop for the internet so we could all see it? I suppose that's only fair.

Does anybody have a recommendation for a good GC or somebody who can repair/replace the framing around a window that is leaking? The window is on the rear part of our home, on what would have originally been the back stairwell that at some point was fully enclosed and extended the length of the home. I have no idea how old it is. The weird thing is that it has started to leak today, about three days after the rain stopped. Water seems to be dripping out from between the wood laminate wall covering and the frame. Not sure if it is coming through from the roof or what. Any names would be greatly appreciated!

On a side note I contacted one large company but they actually required all those named on the mortgage to be present in order to just give me a quote. I think I am capable of making a decision without my wife being present, as I know she would be as well. Not interested in a hard sell. Just a hard worker!

  • K in North Center longtime North Side resident

Just used these folks. Not sure of their work long-term, but they fixed a window that other window companies couldn't fix and/or couldn't replace -- or the replacement cost was $2,500.

Victory Grill?

Hi all. Does anyone have an update on the proposed diner at the old Cafeteria Marianao at 2246 N Milwaukee Avenue? The article mentioned opening "late 2017 or early 2018," but haven't seen much progress. We're fans of Cozy Corner, but they're not open for dinner and this has the potential of becoming a great local option. Thanks!

Stolen Packages

In just this past week I have had some packages go missing. At first I thought, well maybe they delivered to the wrong address and waited a day to see if they would turn up. Well the next day I cam home and just happen to see out of the corner of my eye a brown box with a label that looks very familiar. Low and behold there was the remains of my package with no contents inside. Along with a neighbors shredded package and missing contents as well! WTF man!!! I mean they literally opened the box up like 10ft from my door and just left the box there empty and sad.

  • angelranger 47 year Northside resident

Happened to me once or twice. Now I have most packages sent to my work address. Not always possible I know. Amazon has lockers now around the area, maybe one is convenient for you. It gets worse around Christmas time too. People literally follow around the UPS or Fedex guy and rip off minutes after they leave it on the porch.

What the media is concerned about: The soda tax, the Cubs, the Bears, the Blackhawks, Trump's next bowel movement, legalized marijuana, etc.
What they should be talking about: Alderman Proco Joe Moreno threatening a Chicago citizen, unprecedented property tax increase, woman shot in Rogers Park. I also notice the Harvey Weinstein scandal has fallen from / never been on the front pages. Maybe because the media was complicit in the cover up for years?

Potential Missing Dog on Cullom??

I saw a little white dog (little bit like a Maltese mix) without a collar at Cullom and Albany, I waited around to see if the owner was lurking somewhere but no. I tried to speak to him and approach him but he was a little timid. He walked on to Cullom & Kedzie and seemed to want to get into an apartment building where I let him in. It was 4257-59. When I walked back he wasn't in the common area, so hopefully he found his owner.

If no, I'd suggest going over to that building now.

I was there at least 20 more minutes. Police never showed. I don't care what this man's mental status is but scaring a woman and baby in a park is inexcusable.

The reason why this guy would be back weeks later at Horner park is because you can't "lock" away people in mental institutions anymore. I have lived this nightmare with my own brother. Decades ago families could legally "commit" a mentally ill family member to either a private or state run facility if a doctor and the family deemed the person was a danger to themselves and others. A danger to themselves was living in the streets and drinking all day in the simplest cases. Not the case anymore. We don't have a way to help these people legally and there aren't enough facilities anyway. The most frustrating part is that a person who is mentally ill doesn't believe they are mentally ill. Big pharma sold a load of bung down the river with their push of psychotropic drugs-just pop a pill and you'll be fine. Well who is going to make sure the mentally ill person takes their meds? Families. Then when the person decides that they aren't sick anymore they stop. Then they act out. Then they either get kicked out or walk out and boom, Homeless and now society's problem. Then they feel bad so-they self medicate with alcohol or streets drugs. And laws changed and the government pulled the money out. That is why the homeless problem and the addiction problem is growing in the United States.

  • Thanks for sharing what I'm sure is a night mare situation and we can only hope that the medical professions, society and us as people advance enough to truly help one another.

I have been calling the Lincoln Park/60614 center for 2 days. The recording says to stay on the line for the next available agent but then goes directly to an off-site "operator" recording that was not answered for at least 4 minutes before I hung up. I was not able to even leave a message.

Yesterday, the mail truck delivered a package on my front stoop in direct sight of any thieves walking by. Obviously, this carrier does not know how to read:

1. The sign on the door says to leave packages in the lobby.
2. The address label states to leave the package in the lobby. I now make that part of my address under the house number and street, above the "Chicago, IL 60614".

The package could have even been left behind the noticeable (to the carrier) brick hall wall by the door but out of street sight.

Then the carried LIED; the text sent to me saying it was delivered said it was "Left with and Individual". No, it wasn't. Yesterday, someone did answer at the carrier station just after 5pm saying they were closed.

  • At one time I too thought they were hiring illiterate carriers, mostly because we received so much mail that was not ours. I now believe the problem is that so many carriers are talking on a Bluetooth device while doing their route, and are not paying attention to what they are doing

Yes, I lived there for 23 years and mail delivery was terrible the entire time. It's not that they didn't see the message to leave the package in the lobby; they simply do not care. I had wrong mail delivered all the time and my mail was delivered elsewhere and I sometime received it up to a year late. There was no consistent mail delivery time and we would get mail delivered at 8:30 at night. That also happens at my new 60610 address, but at least we're more likely to get our mail and our packages are left inside.

Aggressive energy salesman

A guy was triple ringing the doorbell last night around 7pm Monday). He asked to review my people’s gas and comed bills. I opened the door and pointed at the sign above the doorbell that clearly stated no soliciting. His response was “what does that mean?” I told him I wasn’t interested. Then he seemed to be acting as if he was offended. Then he took an incoming call and remained on the porch. I told him to leave and he did so slowly. As he exited, he left the gate open. I then instructed him to resecure the gate, and did so while giving me a hard look. Based on demeanor alone, I wouldn’t give his employer a chance.

Missing street postal boxes

This may be a rant, but it's a big concern. I walked from Waveland to Belmont (and beyond) (10 blocks) down Broadway and saw only ONE street mailbox on Patterson. No boxes all that stretch and on the side streets. To me, this is disturbing that there are no accessible street mail boxes.
Where do people mail their packages and mail? I know mail sent is down, but surely people mail bills, greeting cards, small packages. Luckily I'm near N. Marine Drive and Waveland where there's a mailbox, but I'm afraid the PO will take that one away.

Tree Doctor Needed

I have two trees in my yard that clearly have something wrong with them, and I'm no arborist. Can anyone recommend a good arborist in the area who won't charge me an arm and a leg? Thanks!

  • After shopping around I went with SavATree and have been pretty happy with the service.

  • I cannot get anyone to call me back. I think I have called Care of Trees twice. Please let me know if you have luck with SaveATree.

Found koki bagatelle on Ashland & Diversey

Hi,

My husband found this bike bag on the intersection of Ashland & Diversey while on a walk just a few minutes ago (10/7/17). It has a plaid shirt inside and no name/id to match to owner. Is anyone missing this bag from their bike?

Gunshots?

Was that a round of gunshots I just heard near Belmont and kimball?

  • VPS Avondale

I heard and called 911. Saw police come down the street a few minutes later but don't know anything else

  • I've also noticed an uptick in gang graffiti lately. I report to 311 when I see it, but I wonder if the two are related and mean there's some sort of power struggle going on in our area right now.

HELP! Comcast upgrade to DOCSIS 3.0--modem or line problem?

Neighbors, can you help me? Comcast says my cable modem is too old and needs to be upgraded to be able to work with DOCSIS 3.0. I bought four different brands of approved modems, but none of them can get past the Upload light. My old modem was working prior to my changing it starting Wednesday evening. I called Comcast twice and we tried the modems, including my old one, but it is the same problem--is stuck on the blinking...

I called Comcast twice and we tried the modems, including my old one, but it is the same problem--is stuck on the blinking Upload and unable to move to Internet Connection. I have a service call but it is a week away and I need to have access, as I do some work from home. Any suggestions? I have asked some friends but they have no idea either. Has anyone had problems when moving from DOCSIS 2.0 to 3.0? THANK YOU!

Felicia- Service technicians have a different skill set versus call center operators and the technicians cost a lot more. Many service calls can be resolved with out the need to send out a technician. I agree that it's extremely frustrating when the operator is just reading from the script but it wouldn't be cost effective to pay a technician to sit and answer phones.

I'm also a bit surprised that the changing the connector was all that was needed. While they can fail, it's not very common. Hopefully you didn't get charged for it.

  • No, no charge for this one.

If you have a budget in mind I would be happy to help you search any neighborhood in Chicago and I would also be willing to go take a video for you because you can't physically be there to see it. We could even do a video call so you can ask questions while I'm there.
