Reliable Carpet Cleaner

Looking for a reliable carpet cleaner. Prefer a local owner with one of those truck mounted machines if around. Want to make sure he/she knows their profession and doesn't come in and overly saturate carpets to the point it takes days to dry. Not looking for "cheap" just want quality work at a fair price.

  • Jen Baron JBaron

Try Dan Leopold with Gentle Touch Carpet Cleaners. 708-715-5844
I've been using him for years and refer him to clients all the time. In fact, thanks for the reminder! I need to call him myself! He transforms carpets and it always usually dries within a short few hours. He comes out with a truck, works pretty fast, is reliable and reasonably priced. Good luck!

  • my friend does quality slow old school work all star carpet care in Lincoln square

  • Thanks Jen, Thanks Graner -- will call both. Jen, where is Dan located?

What A Difference A Year Makes

Google Streetview, August 2016

What A Difference A Year Makes
The new mid-rise a block south of Uptown, at Broadway and West Sheridan, is really taking shape. The exterior of the " Viridian on Sheridan" looks to be nearly complete, with windows in the brick (northern) portion still to be added. It will hold 100 apartments (one-, two- and three-bedrooms), and expects to start renting later this year.

Honking in alleys at sidewalks

Is this a strictly Chicago thing?? This is my first time living adjacent to an alley and it is SOOOOOOO obnoxious. Some cars honk 10 times as they approach the sidewalk and then still stop to see if anyone is coming (as they should), so the honking is basically pointless. What if someone who is hard of hearing is walking past, are you just going to keep going because you think a honk suffices at a pedestrian walkway? I hear people doing it at all hours, even as late as midnight in a clearly residential area. Anything that can be done about this short of me throwing eggs at every car who does it?

Welllll technically speaking (law student here): the right of way is given to the pedestrian not as a “right” as in “Bill of Rights.” A pedestrian is granted a generalised right of way for no reason apart from the fact that a human on foot or on a bicycle versus a two tonne automobile is, by definition, not a fair fight. But that does not mean that all vehicles are duty-bound to stop and wait out someone doing something ignorant in our streets. The impetus is on ALL of us to behave as though we’ve got some god damned SENSE. Joggers: be aware of your surroundings for your own good. Your kids would like to see you again. Bicyclists: don’t be so smug; there’s just as much incontrovertible proof that you’re not the environmental saviours you think you are as there is proof that motorists treat their cars like impenetrable tanks and behave in ways they would never *dream* of without automatic locks, steel doors, and the ability to speed away. We all just need to find a way to respect ourselves, our neighbours, our communities, and each other. Have a great SAFE day, everyone!

Apartment Forced entry

I was involved in an home invasion earlier this morning around 5:30AM. 3 Latino men dressed in winter gear from head to toe(and ski masks) was able to open my apartment door with keys or some other tool to let them in. They rushed in, grab me and threw me to the floor, ziptied my hands and feet, asked if there was cash, took that and phones then left.
Police and building management were called

  • I am still waiting to hear if other items were stolen and wondering why the phones were abandoned. And I know a lot of people who are up and/or up and out by 530.

  • 400 is the best time. Alarms start going off at 430. Lots of us workout early. After work we don’t want to do squat. We’ve got lives to live.

Thumbs down for honesty? Don't be upset with me. Be upset with the rehabbers that hire unskilled, unlicensed, illegals to "rehab" the buildings. Nice new drywall over 80 year old leaky plumbing and shorting out electrical systems, the cheapest of the cheap home depot fixins you can find for trim. The tenant then pays too much money for a nice looking place that is falling apart behind the nice new paint.

Please help: Looking for quiet/soundproof apartment

Hello,

I’m fairly new to the city and have had really bad luck with excessively noisy neighbors. I’m looking for a quiet apartment to rent for July 1.

I know it’s early for listings but I really need to find a soundproof or very quiet place to live (ideally with ENFORCED noise violation procedures included in every lease).

I know that sounds extreme but noisy neighbors have affected my quality of life and it’s my #1 priority in finding a new place. Any advice on location or building types or landlords would be much appreciated. Thank you!

  • Moving every 3 years seems expensive. I’ve had tenants for 8 and 15 years and a few for 2-3 years.

  • John Smith New to Chicago looking for new apartment

Thank you to everyone for your input! I really appreciate it! Please continue to share specific properties. I’lll be sure to repost in May when spaces may be available and I can sign a lease.

Indoor Basketball?

Anyone have any leads on access to an indoor basketball court in Edgewater or Rogers Park? I tried the Broadway Armory, but access is limited to Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30pm-9pm...even as a member of the park. Having a membership to a public park paid for with our tax dollars is already a questionable practice...let alone the public not having access to a public park. I went in there hoping to have a morning shoot around. Totally empty, yet I wasn't allowed to shoot around. Anyway, I don't mean for this be a rant...just kinda rubbed me the wrong way. Just looking for some indoor basketball recommendations!

Thanks!

  • Warren Park on Pratt and Western has men's basketball Tuesday nights beginning at 7pm. Maybe more nights, I'm only there Tuesday to see.

  • Just wanted to revisit this post and say I've gone to the open gym at The Armory quite a few times sine posting this and I love it! If you're looking for a great place to play basketball in Edgewater, this is the spot. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30pm to 9pm for only $5. $22 a month gets you full access to the workout facility and free access to every open gym. Pretty good deal!

They have been there for over 20 years and the landlord isn't letting them renew their lease. The owner has no idea why. The bank, dry cleaners, and other business in there have closed, not sure what the plan is.

  • This thread is quite conflicting and confusing. The store owners didnt have their lease renewed but didnt know why not? They didnt ask? They seem to be sweet but overpriced..yet throw in free items? Maybe if they didnt give away free things their prices would be lower. One person says its sad in there..another said bustling. Sarah are you the tenant there or is this someone elses report?

.....for timely shoveling/plowing/snoblowing.

Hello Neighbors - I've owned my home for 22 years on Paulina between Montrose and Wilson. It seems, particularly over the past few years, the use of salt on the public sidewalks - not just by multi-unit buildings and businesses - but also by homeowners has increased dramatically. As the owner of a dog that I walk twice a day for 40 minutes each time, I'm finding it impossible to get through a walk without my dog coming up lame from salt burns on his paw pads at least 6 times each walk - sometimes even more. Don't get me wrong, salt can be useful on those rare occasions when we have a glaze ice situation or when melting snow suddenly re-freezes. But to simply throw down piles of salt to avoid shoveling or - for whatever reason - throwing it down after shoveling, just doesn't make sense or is just a sign of laziness. As an example, after the last snow event, not a single grain of salt was used by the homeowners on the north half of the block, and yet the sidewalks have been and continue to be perfectly clear following conscientious shoveling or snowblowing by my neighbors. In fact, our sidewalks are actually clearer than many of the sidewalks where we have to dodge the piles of salt that remain day after day after application. In fact, with plunging temps so often coming immediately after snow events, as most people know, salt dramatically loses its effectiveness - yet it lingers on sidewalks for weeks.

Some might say "can't the dogs just wear those booties"? No. While some dogs will tolerate them the majority of dogs refuse to wear them and just push them off their paws.

I ask that homeowners - as well as tenants/condo owners, please ask your snow removal service or superintendent - to seriously limit the use of salt to those situations where it is genuinely needed and is actually effective. And please, do not throw it down just to avoid actually removing snow.

Thank for listening.

I've lived here for15 years and I always shovel in a timely manner after even the smallest amount of snow. Other posters are correct: There isn't anything I can do about snow that drifts and melts overnight and creates an ice skating rink on the front concrete. I do have a dog and do spent the extra on the expensive pet safe salt because leaving the ice on my front parkway so my elderly neighbors, my mail person, and any other passersby fall and break something isn't an option. Do you know what is an option? Twice daily trips to the Foster Beach Dog Park.

I agree that calling 311 to report those who don't shovel is import. What you're asking is just entitled whining.

  • Sorry for the late to the thread but I’m compelled to comment on one aspect regarding our dogs.

Lots of different angles on this that I agree with: Just do it, do it well, do it in a timely manner. Salt is okay (a comment that I agree with) but...

Sorry for the late to the thread but I’m compelled to comment on one aspect regarding our dogs.

Lots of different angles on this that I agree with: Just do it, do it well, do it in a timely manner. Salt is okay (a comment that I agree with) but not a substitute for shoveling and don’t dump. Salt is very helpful in drying up the sideway to help mitigate the risk of patches/falls. Pet safe salt is ideal - but it’s more expensive.

    HOWEVER...

I have been a dog owner for 25 years in the city. Now in a SFH - I do buy the petsafe salt. But to someone’s point, that’s not always completely effective. And, more importantly, as dog owners, we can’t expect people to pay a premium to make our dogs comfortable. I’m just appreciative when the sidewalk is safe.

I know dogs hate the booties. I know that they can sometimes come off. But, we are the boss of our dog. It’s a training/ obedience exercise to put them on. When I tell my dog it’s time to put the booties on - she physically looks bummed. And then I get the stink eye when I am putting them on (3 minutes) And then she doesn’t want to stand up. And then, once she’s up and out - she totally forgets. And yes, we lose one every now and again. But the ones I have found work best - Pawz- (www.pawzdogboots.com, Amazon, local pet stores) are very inexpensive while very durable and easy to put on.

I love my dog and I always want her to be safe and happy. But, I don’t expect my neighbors to accommodate her needs (which can be addressed by several other means) when they are taking the time/effort/ expense to help keep us safe from falls.

The terracotta looks nice, like it always did it's terracotta. But the black glazed brick? What do people think of that black brick as a choice? Supposedly there are going to be display cases...

Is this legal?

My landlord is redoing our back porches which is great because there were pretty much falling down. They have nailed the doors shut for safety reasons while they were building the porches. It has been over 3 weeks of being locked in our apartments, the porches are complete but not all of us have been let out of our apartments. Our landlord insists that they will be done "soon". I just wonder what my course of action is here.
