Copper Cornice Comeback

Newly constructed copper cornice meets the 109 year old cornice

    Copper Cornice Comeback
The Stewart School Lofts are nearing completion as new residents move into the unique floorplans to enjoy amenities like a gorgeous rooftop deck with beautiful views of the city. Outside, Morningside Development has been hard at work with tuckpointing, installing a new roof and repairing the copper cornice that was sagging in sections and in danger of falling completely off.

Northbound on Troy assault

To the man walking Southbound on Troy at around 1am. You threatened my daughter after she came home from work. You said some lewd comments and made obscene gestures. My girl is a tough cookie, but you just threatened the wrong girl! You promised you'd 'be around' and that you'd 'see' her again. You'll see me for sure if you come near or threaten anyone, especially my daughter, again. I'm reporting you to the police as well.

People who don't deserve pets.

A few minutes ago, your little dog ran out. You shouted at him to come back. And when he did, whatever you did TO him, made him squeal not once but twice. I yelled at you for it and I hope you heard it. And I'm not the only one who witnessed this.

Whose fault is it that the dog ran down the block out of YOUR control? What did you do to the dog that made him squeal in pain? You sir, are a jerk.

  • David Barnett Lived along Ravenswood since 1997.

The Anticruelty Society has a page that tells what counts as abuse under statute 510 ILCS 70/3 and how to report it. Since you don't know where he lives, you can't. But, if you see him again, follow him home (if that feels safe) and then you can turn him in.

    https://anticruelty.org/services-local-resources/report-abuse/

  • Literally makes me ill. I love how people "blame" the dog as if the dog has the ability to discern that running out is a bad idea. Im really proud of you for saying something because normally, no one says a thing. I speak up if i can ANY TIME i see something. GOOD FOR U!

People walking dogs

keep your dog off my yard and out of my planting. If you want your dog to dig and tear up the outside do it in your yard. The outside is NOT a dog park. Walk your dog, pick up your poop and go home to wreck your yard. Show respect for the community. You do not have the “right” to be abusive and disrespectful to the community’s work to keep it looking nice because you can’t train fluffy. My yard is not open to your dog!

looking for monthly parking rental

I live near Swift Elementary, and I'm looking for a monthly, long-term rental parking spot. I've already checked out the usual websites (spothero, parqex, craigslist, etc.). Any information about available spots would be greatly appreciated.

  • Except for walking past it often, I don't know much about it, but there is a fenced parking lot on the corner of Winthrop and Glenlake, one block from Swift. There is a telephone number on the gate.

Any suggestions for recycling plastic ware from carry outs?

Somehow, we have ended up with dozens and dozens of pre-wrapped plastic cutlery sets, and a lot of individual ketchup packages. It's crazy! I don't want to contribute to the landfill problem we're facing, so I'm putting this out there. hoping for suggestions. We can mail them to where ever they can be put to use.

herd, and others, why do I consume water in single-use bottles? well, let's see, it's been awfully hot this weekend, and I've been out and about. No way to carry water, so I buy it. Or perhaps I've been busy managing properties and going here, there, and everywhere. The water in my reusable bottle has turned hot, and I need something cold to drink. Or maybe I'm on the road, and I've drunk all the water in my reusable bottle, and I'm thirsty. The water in some fountain somewhere might be questionable, so my option is to buy water in a single-use bottle.

I agree that consuming water at home in bottles is such a waste! I have a Brita water pitcher and have reusable bottles. But sometimes, just as I have described, we do need cold water sometimes and the only option is to buy it. I do recycle them, BTW.

  • Water bottles may be single-use, but at least they're recyclable. They can also be refilled from the tap (I won't tell). However, I have a question about the carry-out containers from some restaurants, especially Chinese food. Does anyone know why many have no resin-code number (recycling symbol) on the container? Interestingly, the plastic lids do have a symbol, but not the main container. I hate to land-fill them, but the recycling companies will not accept them without the recycling symbol.

Moving within Edgewater area, CTA station question

Hi. Right now i have a studio close to Broadway and on Granville. I need a 1 bedroom and saw one on Granville but I'm looking for Aug 1st and they have to rent July 1st so it may be rented by the time i can move in. I saw another 1 bedroom on Bryn Mawr a little further from the Bryn Mawr CTA and half way towards Clark St.

How does the Bryn Mawr area compare to Granville? I will be traveling in the evenings. Also how do the neighborhoods compare?

I love the stores and accessibility around Granville!

Thanks!

  • Thank you for all the information and positive comments! Looking forward to my move!

  • headsup not available

Granville is a great place to live - you will enjoy the new buildings when they are finished - and the new restaurants are in place - you will see the art scene continues to grow. Granville is a growing street - Bryn Mawr ?? Granville is close to transportation and the lake - another plus is Granville is part of Edgewater - the place to live, work, and play. Granville and "Hip" come together.

Violence in Edgewater

Hey neighbors I just wanted to clue everyone in to what happened on Thursday night/ Friday morning on Kenmore Avenue between Foster and Berwyn. There was an attempted and fortunately unsuccessful drive by sometime between 9-11 pm on our block with multiple shots fired. The suspect who was a member of the Latin Kings was apprehended in the same location the following morning between 8-9 am as he returned to try to finish the job. He was armed at the time of the arrest. I wanted to post about it as a reminder to keep your head on a swivel and that we as neighbors have to look out for eachother.

  • You are absolutely correct !! Thanks for keeping everyone informed.

New to Edgewater and Chicago

Hi Neighbors,

I just moved here, was wondering if anyone had suggestions of good places/groups in the area to meet people. I work till around 7 in the evening and have to come home a walk the dog, so it limits my time span to meet new people.

  • If you mean the Edgewater Athetic Club,I love that place. Very unpretentious and relaxed. They also have a pool and it's never crowded. In fact, more than once I've had it all to myself. You may be talking about a different gym though. This one is on Kenmore just south of the campus.

My seats were heaven on earth. You had to climb up there to sit on em so that eliminated about 75% of ticketholders. Anyway, They turned those blocks into mini-gardens about 3 seasons ago. I was devastated. Haven’t been in the bleachers since, will never go back. So in reality, you are right. You can go at any age. I’m not that old so i don’t know why I picked that number. The only reason I’m down on the Bleachers is because they took my seats.

Just saw the video - that porch was not looking very strong.....not too solid - and attached to a 'frame' building - - what were those people thinking...?????? It was obviously not designed to hold a crowd. Just the size alone would be obvious to anyone that it was not a 'place for a PARTY'. If I had been there - I would of seen the danger in having so many people on that porch - and I would have 'shooooed' them down to the concrete and yard below....It is very nice of the owner to pay the medical bills.... I hate to say this - but I believe it was the host of the party that should have noticed that there were too many of his guests out on the porch - and reeled them in. In any case - I hope there are no lasting problems from the guests injuries...

Perhaps this publicized accident will help to alert others to be aware these things can happen anywhere - and not to 'push their luck'.

  • I have been on the very porch that collapsed and its large size does make it seem like it is able to hold a lot of people.

There are no set inspection schedules for porches in Chicago. The inspection that was done was probably by a private company the owner hired when he purchased the building, so nothing official or legally binding. That porch was attached to the building with nails and not lag bolts as is required via Chicago city code. Also the WGN story has been amended to correct that there actually has been no lawsuit filed as of the publication date. They merely spoke with a lawyer about what the legal ramifications might be.

  • If I was a landlord I would write into the lease the number of people allowed on a porch. Thinking back of that porch collapse in Lakeview years back that killed many .

  • Totally agree. Chicago city codes specify that number, so by including it in the lease it transfers at least SOME of the liability onto irresponsible tenants.

New Parent Child Care Recommendations

Hi Neighbors, I am a soon-to-be new parent (come November) in the Ravenswood area, and I am starting my research into nearby child care options. I know that's easier said than done and that I need to get on a waiting list sooner than later! Thanks for any recommendations or resources you can share.

When is the Foster - Balmoral yard sale?

Hey Andersonville, when do you plan to have the Foster-Balmoral yard sales?
I haven't seen too much advertising for yard sales in the Broadway/Foster/Carmen area.

You can either donate and sponsor a bench for a neighbor (either someone you know or someone who has requested one) or get one for your own parkway.

These benches are intended for the parkway or other public spaces to encourage walking and offer people a place to rest as they go around the neighborhood.

Our goal is to build 15 benches. If you would like to help build the benches please come to the work group Sunday May 20th at Waters School. All ages and abilities are welcome. You can rsvp to info@forwardchicago.org or call 773-633-8312. Please come support this project - thank you!

Rain date is June 3.

If residents aren't confident that they can get from here to there without a place to rest people won't walk. This impacts people of all ages - parents with children, folks with bad knees, someone with a walker. A new bench-building initiative addresses this issue: From Here to There: Benches to...

Water Usage Up over 50% in Andersonville

I know that our utility bills will continue to go up, but my water usage for my 3 flat went up over 50% for the months of January and February. I've spoken to 3 of my neighbors, all on Catalpa between Clark and Glenwood who have also experienced this huge increase in usage. None of us have leaks, some have boilers and some have central air, and we can't figure out why it says we used so much water.

I wrote Alderman Osterman's office and they said they would look into it. I remember there was a water main project in our neighborhood in January of 2018. Has anyone else seen this spike in their water bill?

  • Andrew Lehrer Edgewater resident since 2006

Our 6 flat on Victoria & Wayne experienced something similar - on Jan 1 of this year our usage double. No change in occupants, no meter work/upgrade, just doubled suddenly. We just had the city out and they cannot find any issues with our meter or any leaks in the building. No one in the building has a running toilet or any other suspicious water use. We are at a loss!

  • Thank you for all your responses! I contacted the Alderman, got the number for an actual person at the Chicago Finance/ Utility Department, and they said everything was legitimate. However, I just received a water bill that was $40 for this current period, over 100% less than the last bill.

    I think that is suspicious.

Anyone hear the alarm going off in the Bryn Mawr area, closer to Magnolia about 0330 hours? Just moved to the area so I'm unsure as to what it could be from.
