Photo adds to controversy surrounding Alderman Arena's use of police lot near Wrigley - Nadig Newspapers - Northwest Side Local Newspapers
by BRIAN NADIG and KEVIN GROSS and A Facebook photograph shows that Alderman John Arena (45th) attended a May 11 Cubs game with other elected officials, contradicting his statement to reporters that he parked at the 19th (Town Hall) Police District Station near Wrigley Field so that his 75-year-old mother would not have to walk too far.
    http://nadignewspapers.com
  • Pretty sure most people aren’t shocked by the fact that Arena is a liar. This guy’s behavior can only be described as unhinged, so bullying his way into free parking and then trying to make up a story about needin it for his elderly mother is just par for the course.

Mixed-income housing developer for 5150 Northwest Hwy reviews options after state denies tax credits

State board explains its reasoning for not approving tax credits for Northwest Highway proposal, while a local pastor charges that the housing authority is enabling the “forces of white supremacy” to maintain segregation on the Northwest Side. http://nadignewspapers.com/2018/05/21/fate-of-5150-n-northwest-hwy-uncertain-following-tax-credit-decision/

Fate of 5150 N. Northwest Hwy uncertain following tax-credit decision - Nadig Newspapers - Northwest Side Local Newspapers
by BRIAN NADIG The fate of a controversial mixed-income housing proposal in Jefferson Park remains uncertain after the Illinois Housing Development Authority last week did not approve low-income housing tax credits for the proposal. "We are still reviewing our options at this point," said project developer Joshua Wilmoth of Full Circle Communities.

  • I hear ya, IU.
It's complicated for sure. We know ppl w/Master's degrees who grew old and became stricken with various degenerative conditions and who rely on assisted/affordable/senior housing that's accessible and secure. And part of the sense of security is in knowing it won't be sold to some developer and they get ousted.
People get sick and old and many of them need assisted/affordable housing. Can't just set them out for the coyotes.

  • OParker Native Chicagoan

Many including myself don't see the assisted housing component as being the primary issue, it's more about the high density buildings we are opposed to. Keep the buildings at 4 stories with a percentage being assisted housing and I think you'll find greater support from the community.

Ald. Arena pledges to bring 50 CHA units to the ward
by BRIAN NADIG Alderman John Arena (45th) has pledged to bring 50 Chicago Housing Authority-sponsored apartments to the 45th Ward by the end of his term in the spring of 2019. Arena and six other aldermen recently signed the pledge as part of an effort that they say will help end segregation on the North and Northwest Side.

"Just a few months ago, the mayor gave remarks criticizing efforts to create the first affordable housing for veterans and people with disabilities in Chicago’s 129-year-old Northwest Side neighborhood of Jefferson Park. The mayor to date, has refused to support the 5150 N. Northwest Highway project. The 5150 development represents the first Chicago Housing Authority supported housing on the far Northwest Side, ever, within a community that has historically fought bitterly against the integration of CHA housing since the 1960s, when Dr. King marched in Chicago’s Gage Park and Fred Hampton was spit on in Jefferson Park for marching for open housing. Residential segregation of the far Northwest Side of Chicago has always been purposeful.

The mayor supports giving taxpayer dollars to persons of means who want to live in safe communities, with good schools and access to one of the best transit hubs in the city, but refuses to support affordable, accessible and integrated housing for lower-wage individuals and families to live in the same communities. We need a mayor willing to construct inclusive housing programs and practices for all of Chicago’s neighborhoods, to end residential segregation once and for all.

What is the truth Ald. Sposato

Yesterday, Nick Sposato posted on FB (in all capital letters for emphasis) that the new school being built on Oak Park Ave was going to be a neighborhood high school. Today I see an article saying that it will be a freshman academy for Taft with selective enrollment for 7th & 8th graders and that Sposato attended a meeting on May 8th where he said it was 90% confirmed. Does anyone know the truth? Are our elected officials purposely misleading the public because it is an election year?

http://nadignewspapers.com/2018/05/21/freshman-academy-for-taft-hs-appears-almost-a-done-deal/

Freshman academy for Taft HS appears 'almost a done deal' - Nadig Newspapers - Northwest Side Local Newspapers
by BRIAN NADIG The Taft High School Local School Council at its May 8 meeting received good news about the prospects of a new freshman campus to help relieve overcrowding at Taft. "It's almost a done deal that it's going to be a freshman academy," Alderman Nicholas Sposato (38th) told the LSC.
    http://nadignewspapers.com
  • RALPH PAWLIKOWSKI I am Chicagoan

According to the decision of the May meeting, the school will be a freshman academy for Taft with selective enrollment for 7th & 8th graders.

Sounds like he is playing word games. Technically speaking it is going to be a "neighborhood school" because students from Canty, Dever, Smyser, and Bridge will all have an opportunity to attend. The misleading part that is being left out is that the neighborhood students will only be able to attend for their freshman year, and possibly 7th and 8th grade.

  • The Truth is, U never get the Truth from these City Alderman!!! The old saying , How do U know when a Politician is Lying?! ANSWER: When his Lips R Moving!!!

  • @ Mary D.

Yes, someone always knows the truth but you will not be told if it does not line up with their agendas or the peas in their brains.

I am just trying to get rid of it without having to bag it for the garbage people, so feel free to come by and take it. I plan to put a sign up tonight, but as described above, if you drive west on Montrose, turn right on Narragansett, turn right on Sunnyside, then turn immediately right into the alley and drive down a bit, you will see the sod stacked up on the right right inside my fence. Take as much as you want, all of it if you can.

5150 N Northwest Hwy proposal left off state housing authority agenda

Preliminary agenda for state board meeting on low-income housing tax credits does not include proposal for 5150 N Northwest Hwy. Barring any late changes to the agenda, it is not clear what impact the lack of tax credits would have on the feasibility of the housing proposal for this year. The developer, Full Circle Communities, could not be reached for comment. Tax credits are often required for affordable housing developments. One local housing group has questioned the neutrality of the state board. http://nadignewspapers.com/2018/05/15/5150-project-not-on-preliminary-agenda-for-low-income-housing-tax-credits/

I'm in the process of doing this right now, probably much to my neighbor's dismay since I need to kill all the grass first and that's a rather ugly process. We have a city tree planted there already but it was not planted deep enough and the roots are all over the place making it near impossible to mow. And why not have something that requires little to no maintenance? The other day some city workers came to futz with our streetlight and trampled over part of my grass-killing bonanza, but I figure once I plant perennials and natives they will pop back up or be able to be replanted pretty easily. Unless they have to tear up the whole thing, in which case get yourself on some neighborhood facebook groups or freecycle and there are always people giving away plants for free.

K Seasay, that parkway tree with the shallow root spread sounds typical of what happens when they are planted as saplings and don't get heavily watered for the first few weeks. For parkway saplings, if there's no treegator, just set a watering hose inside their mulch ring on a steady light flow for a couple hours every evening to develop a deep tap root system. At least for a few weeks. We did that and our trees developed twice as full and sturdy as others the City installed that didn't get watered.

Active Transportation Alliance recently launched a campaign (we had our kickoff meeting in late February) to bring together key stakeholders, from local elected officials to Country, State, and Federal agencies to regional planning bodies, to form a coalition aimed at addressing access and connectivity issues along the southern end of the Des Plaines River Trail, from Touhy Avenue to North Avenue.

Among the objectives of the coalition are to dive into understanding the political, geographic, and funding barriers that exist along this section of the trail. We’ll also be examining how the forming of a coalition, the release of a Phase I engineering study, and the formation of a “Friends Of” group for this section of the trail can serve as instrumental elements in identify solutions and ensuring improvements are made.

You are invited to the next meeting of the Des Plaines River & Trail Coalition, which will take place from noon – 2 pm on Wednesday, May 23rd at the Franklin Park Police Department building (9451 Belmont Avenue, in the Community Room). Lunch will be provided. At this meeting, we’ll have a thorough discussion of the physical constraints (connectivity, flooding, access, etc.) along the southern end of the Des Plaines River Trail (from Touhy Avenue to North Avenue). We’ll also hear from one of the founders of the Cal-Sag Trail Coalition and the Friends of the Cal-Sag Trail on how they formed their organizations and how they identified and achieved their goals.

Incident on Kennedy Early Sunday A.M.

Does anybody know what happened on the eastbound Kennedy I-90 Sunday morning around 6 a.m.?

It happened just east of the Austin Ave exit and it appeared that first responders had the Kennedy completely shut down. Thankfully I was able to exit at Austin Ave to avoid the gridlock but others were not so lucky.

  • I keep getting thumbs up for this post.

This is somewhat puzzling as I'm asking a question about a presumed incident on the Kennedy last Sunday morning.

    Does anyone know what happened???

5200 W. Roscoe

Noticed the construction going on inside this building of the corner of 5200 W Roscoe/Laramie. The ground level has framing going on front to back. Any ideas what they are doing?

  • Is framing going up inside the existing building or outside?

  • From what I seen that night in the dark, the framing is going on inside the first floor, front to back. Please note, I was inquiring if anyone had ideas what business establishment was coming. Or what they are building inside the place, not if there are permits. I'm not one to report people. I'm glad the building was purchased and work is being done instead of sitting abandoned.

Tree Cutting

Hi neighbors,

I have a 30+ foot tall pine tree between my house and garage I'm looking to get cut down. Does anyone have a recommendation for someone to do this? Any idea how much I should be prepared to spend?

Thanks.

Tree Trim vs. Removal

I am noticing some of the orange no parking signs from Dept of Forestry. They are sporadic though, not on a full block like I have seen before. Is there anyway to determine if a tree is slated for removal vs pruning? I see one with a blue tag on it (think it means its been treated for a disease), but no markings/tags on the other trees, yet they have the orange signs on them also. Thanks for any info you can provide.

  • @scott concertman, I have my parkway Ash treated every few years by a local tree company. It's in great shape. How do I get it on the "list" to not be cut down? The company that treats the tree puts on a new / current tag every time they treat it. I'm assuming they're pulling a permit because they are well known in the city.

First, thank you for patriotically protecting our urban ecosystems keystone species presently facing functional extinction in the wild. If most beneficial thing a conservationist can do for local ecology...is plant a new tree. Then protecting an already maturing tree, which literally represents physical definition of ones local ecosystem. Is exponentially more beneficial, so great job Chi-girl! If you did not check it out yet, here is link to my historical EAB info blog with photos of two oldest cook county ash trees I am voluntarally protecting....https://scottieashseed.wordpress.com/

Yes permit on record is first line of defence, and revised tag affixed to trunk showing date last treated is only thing defending it from city removal. Know that even with all that, if treatment had been applied poorly. And tree showed decline, city could remove based on diagnosis.

You are right to be worried since city has already begun removing numbers of recently retreated ash trees when still fully healthy, for reasons such as just because they are ash, and will require inevitable removal anyways in upcoming years.

So I have already begun working with one senior forestry rep to help organize an official protection program. In fact first time I had discussed this issue with him, he was confident that required permit entered into city wide system with trees exact location was intended to prevent mistaken removal.

In closing, forestry no longer marks trunks of trees to be removed with big Green painted spot. But now few days before...applies orange parking restriction posters on multiple trees, to allow crews more room for felling. And no poster differentiates which tree or trees are selected for removal, or will not be touched. So six trees with six signs for one removal. Hey Chi girl, here is link to front page story written about my work http://www.oakpark.com/News/Articles/5-9-2017/%27Scottie-AshTree-Seed%27:-Trees-don%27t-have-to-die/

Missing Recycling Bins

There used to be 3 recycling binds for our apartment building. Now two of them are gone. The same thing happened to the building next to ours. One bin will not hold all of our recycling.

Is the city deemphasizing recycling [again]. Or is there a ring of recycling bin thieves hitting our neighborhood.

  • Usually if the scavenger is going to replace damaged or chewed up cans they are replaced within a week. Still suspect the best thing is to check your Scavenger contract to find out if anything has changed. Most landlords/Associations do not advise unit owners/tenants when this is done.

  • If they were the blue bins from the city just call 311 they will bring out more. Mine were stolen as soon as they replaced the previous ones that were stolen. People apparently don't realize they can get their own for free by calling 311

Armed Robbery

Last night, Tuesday, April 24th approximately 10:30 PM a man and a woman were held up at gunpoint in front of 3750 N. Kilpatrick.

I will again say Alderman Ariel Reboyras has not done enough to bring more police officers to our neighborhood. The area has progressively gotten worse and the Alderman has had street roll calls one after another, yet not doing anything to actually protect us.
I will encourage my friends and neighbors to vote out Mayor Emanuel and Ariel Reboyras. We need more than just "lip service" and "dog n' pony shows".

  • Weebis Politically Incorrect Thought Criminal

I worked with a woman that went to Lakeview High School with Reboyras. She said he was a VERY active member of the latin kings street gang.

Maybe, if the 30th ward residents were all latin Kings, he'd do something for you.

I've heard rumors about his ties to gangs. Although I failed to actually challenge him last election, I befriended a lot of new people in the ward. In the Belmont-Central business district, business owners told me that he's very thuggish and rude. Last year, a friend of mine said that his nephew I believe was involved in a shooting that occurred in front of his building. I definitely wouldn't doubt that he is somehow more involved in the crime in the ward than some people would want to believe. If Gutierrez wins the alderman seat, she won't investigate him nor the suspicious activity of his entire office. He refused to grant the Chicago Inspector General with the authority to investigate alderman without their consent. I wonder what he's hiding...
