10-story building planned for former site of ornate bank at Six Corners

Alderman Arena will hold a community meeting on former bank site at Six Corners at 6:30 pm Thursday, June 21, at the Filament Theater, 4041 N Milwaukee Ave. The planned 10-story building has been in the works for at least a year and most of the 265 units would be for assisted living, including memory care. http://nadignewspapers.com/2018/06/17/photo-gives-a-glimpse-into-the-history-of-the-parcel-targeted-for-senior-living-at-six-corners/

there had been the undertone that most people that oppose the project were racist, and that Jefferson park was rumored to be a community of racist. this has damaged the reputation and defamed the character of jeff park in the eyes of the lost.

Monarch Butterflies need "Common Milkweed"

For anyone interested in helping restore Monarchs by planting milkweed; not all milkweed offers full life-cycle Monarch support (not all gardeners/naturalists know the distinction). All types of milkweed will attract pollinators/butterflies.
But only Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) supports the full Monarch lifecycle; as the necessary food source for caterpillars of the Monarch butterfly that feast on its leaves.

Never saw the visitor to our garden, but we found its caterpillars! (pic)

Really, I think the firefly population has recovered somewhat from the 1970's when they had kids catching them, putting them in sandwich bags, freezing them, then sending them or taking them to someplace where scientists were studying them. When I was about 9 or 10 EVERY kid in our neighborhood wanted to "help scientists" and we decimated the population of fireflies in the area. After those years you'd see maybe 10 or 20 fireflies at dusk. I suspect it was pretty much the same all through the region.

Anyway, last summer I went outside right at dusk and the yard was blinking with literally thousands of fireflies. So beautiful. Made my heart glad.

I never saw flocks of monarchs, but as a kid saw many, and the caterpillars too, and many other kinds of butterflies that I don't see anymore. Now I might see one or two monarchs a season, and hardly any other kind of butterfly except those little white ones. Makes me sad.

Don't know a thing about the junebug... :-)

Firefighter kneels before football game

Has anyone seen a public statement from Ald. Sposato or Napolitano about this? I know I saw a picture of them at the game.

What do people think of this?

https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/black-firefighter-takes-knee-at-charity-football-game-cpd-cfd-garry-mccarthy-anger/

Black firefighter takes heat after taking knee at police-fire football game
A political and emotional brush fire is smoldering within a grieving Chicago Fire Department over a national anthem protest that marred a charity football game dedicated to the memory of two fallen Chicago heroes.
    https://chicago.suntimes.com
  • No, the NFL doesn't. They have banned personnel from kneeling if they are on the field for the national anthem. Which itself is a joke since the NFL takes money for those "patriotic" displays. Can't people find something else to get their panties in a bunch over? Who cares if someone kneels or doesn't kneel for the flag?

  • Chris, patriots care, freedom loving citizens care, widowed spouse of military veterans care. The point is that NFL management are hypocrites, and this display of disrespect is irreverent, unnecessary, unacceptable, and intolerable to many.

Suspected gang member shot early Friday in the 16th District

A suspected gang member was shot in his right bicep at 2 a.m. Friday, June 8, while he was walking in the 5000 block of West Newport Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that 4 gunshots were fired from a passing vehicle, which was described as an older model, dark-colored Ford Taurus, according to police.
He also told officers that he ran when the shots started and that he was a block away when he noticed his wound, police said.

  • Heard on Ch2 news that nearly 20 shooting injuries over this past wknd involved gang-related 'victims' who are NOT cooperating with police investigations.
Great people to have around, surely (sarc).
Kinda have to agree w/CHB in spirit.

  • Weebis Politically Incorrect Thought Criminal

Last night in the vicinity of Irving Park and St. Louis another choirboy way shot through the forearm.

He was obviously a gang banger, because when the dispatcher asked his condition the copper said, " he will live to be shot at again." Gallows humor at its best.

Wouldn't this be great for the Point site until something gets developed.

Instead of leaving a vacant parcel of land which they demolished buildings on to make way for the Equinox Hotel, Midwest Related set up a pop up market with shipping containers until they are able to start construction. This is what responsible developers do. HINT HINT Clark Street. Granted Clark Street would have to fill in that hole!

Pop-up container market comes to West Loop's Restaurant Row
Before Chicago's Equinox Hotel breaks ground in the Fulton Market District, the vacant site of the proposed 680-foot tower will host a temporary retail market housed in repurposed shipping containers. Starting on Friday, June 15, the lot at 725 W. Randolph Street will provide a rotating roster of local entrepreneurs and business with a chance to sell and test-out products.

Has Anyone Else Seen or Found any Dead Bats?

I came across either a dead of dying small grayish brown bat on the 4300 block of Lavergne I called 311, and was in formed that Animal Control would be immediately dispatched. The operator said they consider bats a priority because they can carry rabies.

A few years back, the area received a post card in the mail from a government agency (CACC?) that a bat in the neighborhood had tested positive for rabies.

  • Sam

I have never found a dead bat, but I see them flying every day. There’s a bat colony on the rooftop of a building by me. They come come out around 7pm and just fly in circles.

  • IMHO Been here long enough to know

I here they found several around 35th and Shields in Bridgeport.

Sears and Forensics

Does anyone know what happened behind the Sears today? At about 11am there were forensics cops and my wife was told the store would not be open today.

  • I think they were investigating the slow and painful death of Sears Holdings Corporation.

  • We recently purchased a police scanner. Things are very busy for our police. Recently I read about long wait times due to the lack of beat police. Its absolutely awful knowing you can wait ,20 + minutes for a squad to arrive.
There are incidents that never make it posted anywhere because of the amount of crime daily. As a person who is now privy to the calls, and the hold times of responses due to lack of sufficient police, you should call the alderman and mayor!

What is the truth Ald. Sposato

Yesterday, Nick Sposato posted on FB (in all capital letters for emphasis) that the new school being built on Oak Park Ave was going to be a neighborhood high school. Today I see an article saying that it will be a freshman academy for Taft with selective enrollment for 7th & 8th graders and that Sposato attended a meeting on May 8th where he said it was 90% confirmed. Does anyone know the truth? Are our elected officials purposely misleading the public because it is an election year?

The reasoning behind that would be to keep the kids in one school all 4 years. That would prevent current seniors, juniors, and sophomore kids from transferring from the Taft North campus to the Taft South campus. If this is the plan, then it should be honestly explained to the public this way.

I remember when Gordon Technical High School went co-ed. The first year plan was to allow freshman girls in, the second year, sophomore girls, third year junior girls, etc. The transition was smooth.

I'm in the process of doing this right now, probably much to my neighbor's dismay since I need to kill all the grass first and that's a rather ugly process. We have a city tree planted there already but it was not planted deep enough and the roots are all over the place making it near impossible to mow. And why not have something that requires little to no maintenance? The other day some city workers came to futz with our streetlight and trampled over part of my grass-killing bonanza, but I figure once I plant perennials and natives they will pop back up or be able to be replanted pretty easily. Unless they have to tear up the whole thing, in which case get yourself on some neighborhood facebook groups or freecycle and there are always people giving away plants for free.

K Seasay, that parkway tree with the shallow root spread sounds typical of what happens when they are planted as saplings and don't get heavily watered for the first few weeks. For parkway saplings, if there's no treegator, just set a watering hose inside their mulch ring on a steady light flow for a couple hours every evening to develop a deep tap root system. At least for a few weeks. We did that and our trees developed twice as full and sturdy as others the City installed that didn't get watered.

Dear Des Plaines River & Trail Stakeholder,

Active Transportation Alliance recently launched a campaign (we had our kickoff meeting in late February) to bring together key stakeholders, from local elected officials to Country, State, and Federal agencies to regional planning bodies, to form a coalition aimed at addressing access and connectivity issues along the southern end of the Des Plaines River Trail, from Touhy Avenue to North Avenue.

Among the objectives of the coalition are to dive into understanding the political, geographic, and funding barriers that exist along this section of the trail. We’ll also be examining how the forming of a coalition, the release of a Phase I engineering study, and the formation of a “Friends Of” group for this section of the trail can serve as instrumental elements in identify solutions and ensuring improvements are made.

You are invited to the next meeting of the Des Plaines River & Trail Coalition, which will take place from noon – 2 pm on Wednesday, May 23rd at the Franklin Park Police Department building (9451 Belmont Avenue, in the Community Room). Lunch will be provided. At this meeting, we’ll have a thorough discussion of the physical constraints (connectivity, flooding, access, etc.) along the southern end of the Des Plaines River Trail (from Touhy Avenue to North Avenue). We’ll also hear from one of the founders of the Cal-Sag Trail Coalition and the Friends of the Cal-Sag Trail on how they formed their organizations and how they identified and achieved their goals.
