CHICAGO -- For the past seven years, Air Force veteran Anthony Johnson has been selling newspapers out of a beaten up stand at the corner of Milwaukee and Faragutt. Chicago Police Lieutenant John Garrido connected with Anthony about a year ago and decided to give Anthony a better place to sell his newspapers.

Garrido posted a Facebook Live video asking for help. Volunteers stepped up, and they spent the last few weeks transforming this stand.

All of this was done with the help of local sponsors like Tony Marino of Marino Jeep. They took Johnson to the local Dick's Sporting Goods and bought Johnson all new winter attire to help him stay warm.

Johnson makes about $120 a week from his newsstand, and most of the time, he's just trying to by. He says he sleeps outdoors more often than indoors. So, John set up a GoFundMe account to help with Anthony's living expenses.

"While this is not a long term fix, our hope is this will give Anthony a chance to get a leg up to take care of himself down the road. We will also look into other resources that may be available to him as a vet," the GoFundMe page says.

Today, the newsstand looks brand new, and artist Peter Bucks is painting two murals on the stand.

The new and improved newsstand will be unveiled Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.

Thanksgiving isn’t just an excuse to eat too much food and watch football, it’s a four day weekend to spend festive time with loved ones and Dovetail Brewery (1800 W. Belle Plaine in Chicago, Illinois; 773-683-1414) is the perfect place for memory making.

Cheers to the start of Thanksgiving weekend with a glass of Dovetail’s Holiday Bock! The brewery’s beloved seasonal brew makes its return to the taps on Wednesday, November 22 and to celebrate, the brewery has created a special cheese flight to pair with the brew. Stronger and darker than a typical lager, the Holiday Bock’s robust malt character is nicely balanced with a slightly candied-fruit sweetness and noble hops.

Enjoy the Holiday Bock in Dovetail Brewery’s tap room on Thanksgiving Eve and don’t forget to pick up a growler or two to enjoy on Thanksgiving Day. This 100% barley malt lager, with a 7.6% ABV, is ideal for warming up after a family football game or bringing more spirit to the dinner table.

Dovetail will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, but the tap room will be open from noon to 11 p.m. Friday, November 24. Take refuge from Black Friday shopping or stop by just to celebrate the day off. Don’t forget to bring leftover turkey sandwiches!

Protect Net Neutrality!
Join Dovetail Brewery in the taproom on Monday, December 4 to write letters to Congress asking them to protect Net Neutrality. Our buddies at Bloodshot Records will be on hand to set the mood (and they'll also have some goodies to giveaway.) Want to know more? Visit battleforthenet.com.

Comcast wants to control what you do online. Do you want to let them?
The new chairman of the FCC was a top lawyer at Verizon. And now he's calling for a vote to kill net neutrality, as a gift to his former employer. So on December 7th we're protesting outside Verizon retail stores across the U.S.

Currently, our neighborhood is overcrowded with cars on the street that I sometimes have to circle for over 30 minutes just to squeeze in somewhere. It's quite frustrating at the end of a very long day.

I was wondering if anyone in Albany Park might be renting their parking spot or garage out. Both my sister and I would be looking for a spot. We currently live right by Ronan Park and North Park University. Anywhere close would be a Godsend.

I'm not very hopefully we'd be lucky enough to find something, but I thought I would put out the call.

Thank you all for your help!

Kittyhop in Logan Square, I was standing at my rear kitchen window while on an important phone call, when I saw the perpetrator inside my truck. I yelled out as loud as I could and pounded on my window, which startled both the customer service representative and the a-hole in my truck. I ran out my backdoor towards my truck when he ran down the alley while clutching his, what looked like, a gun peering out of his shirt. I had left my vehicle unlocked (not any more), just to avoid damage to my vehicle in situations like this.

  • WOW!!That is quite something...and yes, scary that he might have had a gun....

Cat Sitter Up Here?

Hi there...does anyone have any recommendations for a good pet/cat sitter in the Albany Park area?

  • Heather from Bow Wow Meow, or Marcia from Fur & Feathers. I found both through Yelp recently since I’ll be traveling for the holidays, and I love that they’re both in my neighborhood! Heather lives just down the street from me, actually! I feel like I found my local cat community, and that’s a good feeling. Marcia might have more availability than Heather... Or you could always check on Rover, they do cats too

  • Chicago Cowgrrrl proud Albany Park resident & Irving business owner

We started using Greer at Mamabear Pet Care a few years ago when we had elderly cats that needed regular medications.
    https://www.facebook.com/mamabeargreer/?timeline_context_item_type=intro_card_work&timeline_context_item_source=618259609&pnref=lhc
She was fantastic. Now that we have young cats, we've continued to use her because she's not only super knowledgeable and trustworthy, but she can relax when she's caring for our cats. She sends photos via text. She plays with the cats. She's a bit expensive if you have low maintenance cats, but if they need meds, she's your savior.

Loud "Boom" Last Night? Argyle and Central Park?

Did anyone hear a loud boom in the middle of night last night? I think it came from somewhere near Argyle and Central Park or perhaps further west. Thanks

Also sorry to say very loud music from car in same general area early this AM. Please call police about this kind of thing also. Anyone else hear this? Both very unusual.

  • Ellen K. From the far NW side and now back.

I heard a loud Boom but it wasn't a gunshot unless someone has a cannon. It startled me and then a lesser boom followed. It seemed like a car but I'd never heard that noise before.

I live by Pulaski and Irving so I get traffic noise from all over.

AAFES to Open Online Shopping to Veterans
From an Army and Air Force Exchange Service News Release

DALLAS, Oct. 23, 2017 — With less than a month until the much-anticipated official launch of the veterans online shopping benefit, more than 225,000 honorably discharged veterans have already been verified to shop at online military exchange websites when the sites open to veterans Nov. 11.

The Army and Air Force Exchange Service online shopping benefit is the first military exchange benefits expansion in nearly 30 years. Beginning on Veterans Day, America’s 18.5 million veterans will be able to shop online at the military exchange websites: ShopMyExchange.com, shopcgx.com, mymcx.com, and mynavyexchange.com.

Shopping the military exchanges online provides veterans an opportunity to reconnect with their military community, allowing these soldiers, airmen, sailors, Marines and Coast Guard “members for life” to save money with tax-free shopping and military exclusive pricing while also supporting critical military quality-of-life programs.

Renters car put on blocks and tires stripped off his blue Honda Accord 2017 Belleplaine

At approximately 11/2/2017, any where from midnight to mid day Friday, our renter who parked his car on BellePlaine at 4056 North Springfield Ave. (our two flat), his car was put on blocks and tires taken off his blue Honda Accord 2017.

We later found out that the people that did this went to the front of our house, stole a large brick from our garden and used it to prop his car up.

Please report!!!!

Rham does need to go. Question is who will replace him.

Rahm Emanuel is about as close to center as Chicago could ever hope to elect. Good Luck with what you'll get in lieu of Rahm. My guess is that it would be someone who would drive us deeper into unsustainable pension debt than we already are.

Windy City Playhouse

Two years ago someone posted about seeing a play at Windy City Playhouse. I checked them out and decided to buy a seasons pass. Every play I see there is better than the last. The prices are cheaper than down town at Goodman ( also had seasons pass there ), the seats are roomy & comfortable with a little table for your cocktail, there is free parking right outside. You can eat at Leader Bar or Pitchfork and walk over to the play. The acting is superb. The plays are all awesome. I just saw "Becky Shaw" tonite and loved it. if your into live plays at smaller venues check this place out. All around a great night out.

  • Been there once a while back, thoroughly enjoyed the experience & acting. I should go back soon again!

Chris Jones (Tribune theater critic) wrote that with "Becky Shaw" the theater looked to be hitting its stride as a neighborhood playhouse. He pointed out that some of their productions were pretty dreary in terms of subject matter. I was not enthusiastic about many of their early productions, but I look forward to the shows they have scheduled. My wife and I are eager to go and I'll be purchasing tickets.

Anybody have a great pediatrician and OBGYN (and hospital) they would recommend?

I'm looking for a great OBGYN and a good hospital to have my baby at. (I've looked at the hospital reviews and because of them I'm kind of wanting to have my baby in another state at this point.) Please help! I also haven't been able to find a pediatrician or OB with great reviews who is nearby. I'd prefer someone close but am willing to go downtown too. Thank you so much for recommendations! I really appreciate it 😊

  • For an OB/GYN, hands down, I recommend Dr. Micah Garb at Northwestern-Lake Forest. We just delivered our first at Lake Forest in March. I know it is a bit of a drive, ( but if you were looking at going as far as out of state, I imagine you don't...

For an OB/GYN, hands down, I recommend Dr. Micah Garb at Northwestern-Lake Forest. We just delivered our first at Lake Forest in March. I know it is a bit of a drive, ( but if you were looking at going as far as out of state, I imagine you don't mind a bit of a commute.) Long story short, I began seeing Dr. Garb when he was at a private practice in Streetorville. He's fantastic enough that I followed him to the burbs. When choosing a hospital to deliver it, we primarily looked at Swedish, Prentice, and Lake Forest. I, too, was unimpressed with Swedish. Our delivery experience at Lake Forest was hands-down the best it could have been. The staff was amazing, and we felt like we were the only patients there. I was also a high risk pregnancy, and never once doubted any care or advice we received.

As far as a pediatrician, we're going to a Northwestern affiliated office at North & Clyborn. We've seen all but one of the Drs. there, and it's been kinda 'meh'. Definitely haven't clicked with any of the Doctors or been impressed, but not bad enough that I'd say to steer clear. PM me if you have any questions, best of luck, and congratulations!!!

  • Illinois Masonic was fantastic. The level of personal attention and care was incredible, and they don't rush you out of there, unlike Prentiss, which we were warned is baby factory. Their ObGyn faculty group has a lot of great doctors. Dr Melissa Dennis, Dr Popper.

We also highly recommend our pediatrician--Dr Nava Segall. She's with Lurie Children's but sees infants at Illinois Masonic as well.

Wooden Chairs stolen from front yard 4100 block of Mozart

Had some decent wood Adirondack chairs in the front yard for a couple of years - one day after Halloween they were stolen. These are heavy wooden chairs that would have required a vehicle to move. Who steals chairs?

People stole our metal garden fencing (the tiny kind that you just stick into the ground.) Sad. I'm sorry this happened to you. We even had to drill our front planters into the concrete to keep them from being stolen. Don't give up. Just chain them down.

  • Was this Halloween night?

  • Yes, unfortunately. I have lived in Chicago for 15 years .... 2.5 in this neighborhood and have never had any issues.

  • It was a group of neighborhood teenage kids who busted car windows on multiple vehicles with a baseball bat on Halloween night. If anyone else had their windows busted in the Avondale neighborhood or by the Target on Addison near Sacramento park send me a private message and I’ll pass along the information I have.

Greetings My Neighbors,

Saturday, November 11 is Veterans' Day. On this very special US holiday, we celebrate all of our living veterans who have served or are serving in any branch of the military, active, reserve or National Guard, peacetime or wartime. We also take time to remember our POWs and MIAs in active hope of their imminent return to their loved ones and our nation's soil.

Everybody can take part in Veterans' Day activities. Here's how in four steps....

1) Thank a veteran. If you do not know a veteran, head out to one of the many Veterans' Day ceremonies as you will surely be able to thank a veteran there.

2) Support a veteran. You can make a monetary donation to a wide variety of veterans' organizations. A good local organization right here in the Northwest Area is Chicago Veterans. chicagovets.org. You can also Google for other agencies to support.

3) Remember a veteran. Because Veterans' Day is about those veterans still living, we read the names of our POWs and MIAs. You can do that by going to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency here: dpaa.mil. Once there, select "Our Missing" and choose the list by war/conflict and then the state. You can also search the list by name as well as select names by branch of service. Take a few minutes to read the names.

4) Join with veterans. There are numerous Veterans' Day ceremonies going on. Give it a search for one near you. All are welcome to attend the annual Edgebrook Community Association Veterans' Day Flag Ceremony on Saturday, November 11 at 4 PM at Kinzua, Hiawatha and Lehigh. For the first time, we'll be raising the POW/MIA flag over Edgebrook. Check social media and the ECA website for more information as it comes out.

That's it. I hope you are able to join in Veterans' Day 2017. Questions? Please ask...Jac Charlier at jac.charlier@gmail.com.

    Chicago Veterans
What is Chicago Veterans? We're a community of military veterans who share a common passion for helping our brothers and sisters in arms. Whether it's veteran homelessness, PTSD awareness, trauma, benefits or camaraderie building we are committed building a better community.

About a month ago, I left for work in the morning and noticed that at night someone (or something) had placed a large chocolate chip cookie on the front doorstep of our home --it seemed placed (not thrown) because it was actually touching the door. The front gate was not locked, so figured it was either left by a wandering drunk vagrant who had decided to take rest on our doorstep during his nighttime travels, or perhaps had been placed there by an animal (though that seemed unlikely, since no part of it had been eaten). Weirded me out enough that I took note of it, but other than that, pretty much forgot about it.

This morning I woke up to find a large loaf of unsliced bakery bread (a little smaller than a football) on our back porch steps. This really weirded me out, because our gate was locked this time, and our house is surrounded on all sides by a 6-foot fence. Was way too big to have been carried by a squirrel/cat, showed no signs of having been bitten, nibbled or clawed. Nor, given the way porch is situated, could it have been tossed there from street or alley. Which means, some time between midnight (when we got home and entered via the back) and 8:15 a.m. (when I noticed it), someone climbed our fence, placed this strange loaf of bread on our steps, and departed.

Obviously, that’s a little disconcerting. Tried googling, and found this reddit thread (http://www.reddit.com/r/needadvice/comments/2qm1kh/does_anyone_know_what_leaving_bread_by_someones/) by someone who had experienced a similar thing, but which provided no further explanation. Suppose next step is to install some hidden cameras, but was wondering if anyone in the neighborhood has experienced a similar thing or had ideas as to what this might be. Little freaked out right now, would appreciate any alternative explanations that don’t involve a person climbing our fence in the middle of the night to leave some weirdness on our steps.

  • I have seen a couple of times where all sorts of bread is by the parkway of a tree at 2 different locations. The bread is broken up loaves of bread. I don't know why someone would put a bunch of bread at the base of a tree. I cleaned it up so rats wouldn't come. Why is someone putting break or cupcakes outside for animals to get?

  • George F in Ravenswood displaced New Yorker

I think it's a misguided, but well intended gesture at feeding squirrels, and birds. Ever see a rat and a squirrel fight over a piece of bread? Not pretty.

Dog Boarding

Any recommendations for someone on a strict budget? I live in the Irving Pk neighborhood. I have a place that is affordable but it's in Grayslake, but I'm looking for something closer to home.

I’ve used Valerie’s pet service at Wellington and clybourn for 20 years, can’t say enough good things about them. Prices have always been competitive with other places in the city
