i haven't thought out the details, because i know we are all from different neighborhoods...but calling it chicago-northsiders or something comes to mind. there are already a couple of NWside sub-reddits, but they are vastly underused. we could at least just start one and see what happens.

your thoughts?

  • I wouldn't consider /r/ChicagoNWside vastly underused and I'm sure they'd welcome even more activity.

  • Thanks for this post. I really appreciate it. How do I sign up?

Governor Rauner chose criminals over children and families when he announced today he would veto a public safety measure that would protect communities from illegal gun trafficking.

We are outraged the Governor sided with the gun manufacturers, their lobby and the criminals who continue to cause death and injury with firearms purchased from unregulated gun dealers. His statement reflects that he has little, if any concern for the children who are murdered each day by gun violence in Chicago and the rest of our state.

Corrupt gun dealers in Illinois flood our cities and towns with over 4000 crime guns every year. The Combating Illegal Gun Trafficking Act, a bipartisan measure that passed the General Assembly with a wide margin of support in May will save lives by holding corrupt gun dealers accountable and reducing the number of guns getting into the hands of criminals.

By stating he would veto this bill, Governor Rauner proved once again the gun industry and their lobby are more important than the lives of Illinois children and their families. We urge our lawmakers to be a part of the solution and do whatever is necessary to combat the Governor’s dangerous commitment to veto this bill.

Rauner Signs 'Red Flag' Gun Law

Gov. Rauner also signed a law that would extend a 72-hour hold on all guns.

SPRINGFIELD, IL — Gov. Bruce Rauner on Monday signed a new law to keep firearms away from those who may use them to commit acts of violence against themselves or others. Rauner announced the news on social media, saying the "red flag" law, known as the Lethal Violence Order of Protection Act, gives law enforcement and family members the chance to prove in court that a person in possession of guns is suffering from mental health issues and is a threat.

The new legislation allows courts to prohibit gun possession or purchase through what Rauner calls emergency civil restraining orders.

To my neighbors who'll be transitioning to the new site, please be careful what you divulge or report, remember, the bad guys also go through these sites to find out if their cover has been blown and to see who is reporting them, of course they probably did it in Every Block I'm sure, but at least here, we remained anonymous. Please remember that anyone can lurke these open sites, not just your good neighbors and the bad guys never post, they just listen, so please be careful, be safe, prosper and be well, I'll miss you all.

Eugene Field(house) River Dumping

Hi Albany Park Neighbors,
On more than one occasion I have seen someone dump plastic bags with animal parts into the bridge passing over the river here. They simply get out of their GMC walk to the river bridge and throw in a bag of animal parts. This also has happened at Central Park. Has anyone else witnessed this and has anyone got a license plate number? I'm hoping to take information to the Alderman. Thanks for your help!

  • What they're doing is gross & wrong on many levels (what type of animal parts and obtained how, etc...?). Hope you can collect enough info to have them caught and stopped.

  • future alderman future alderman

i would call 311 today and the alderman tomorrow

Why Are There So Few Bars in Albany Park?

Why are there so few places in Albany Park where one can sit down and have a drink? There are a ton of good restaurants, but so few of them have liquor licenses. What gives?

A neighborhood is defined by neighbors, and having places where one can have a drink with strangers goes a long way to turning those strangers into true neighbors.

Where Can I Find This Taco Corner?

"Albany Park, for example, and its neighboring north-side enclaves remain (for now) a safe place where the professional taquero can thrive in America. A case study: on a side street off one of the busier thoroughfares in this part of the city, there's a family who each weekend set up a tent along the sidewalk, sheltering a table and chairs, coolers, cold drinks, a salsa bar, and a gas-powered comal on which the patriarch of the clan griddles piles of hissing carne asada, al pastor, cesina, and chorizo con papas. The smell of warming corn tortillas and caramelizing meat casts a spell that's palpable for blocks. People who don't even live in the neighborhood drive their cars to this corner, line up under the tent, and wait patiently to place their orders with a teenager scribbling in a spiral-bound notebook."

I would like to those tacos, but for obvious reasons, the exact corner wasn't disclosed in the article. Would someone who knows of this spot be kind enough to provide it here? I think that would be safe, as this site gets far less traffic than the Reader, but feel free to message me privately, if you think that would be more appropriate. Thanks in advance!

I also spoke to the owner for a bit and it seems hes been at that tent for 2 years now and just recently opened up an interior restaurant up the street. But mentioned that the street set up actually brings in all his clientele as opposed to the actual restaurant.

Comcast to end hyperlocal site EveryBlock, agrees to send users to rival Nextdoor

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-comcast-ends-everyblock-20180711-story.html

Last Tuesday (the 19th) around 1pm I witnessed what looked to be animal abuse in the area by (what I think) a dog walker. I love dogs, especially Golden Retrievers so this was definitely unsettling. As I look back, I definitely should have called 311 or atleast said something but did not want to cause any more issues.

This happened at the corner of Oakley & Addison. The (presumed) walker came down Oakley towards Addison, away from Waveland, at this point the dog laid down and the walker kicked it a few times. The dog then got up and they crossed over Oakley where the dog laid down again and the walker continued to kick the dog. They then walked down Oakley towards the school/Waveland.

I tried to follow them in hopes of seeing where the dog went to stop by later and inform the owner but unfortunately ran out of space/time and had to get to work.

If you know this dog or the owner, I strongly suggest showing them this video so this doesn’t happen again.

A young (teenage I am estimating) boy was standing up in the back with this torso out of the sunroof shooting at the car ahead of them. I witnessed about 6+ shots fired. Both cars turned onto Irving Park from Troy. I called the police and gave them the pertinent details I was able to witness. I wanted to post this to encourage others to be safe and on alert for gun related activity in the neighborhood. I am upset I was not able to get the license plate.

Is it illegal to honk?

A dormant discussion that was shut down some time ago, when the question was asked: "Is it legal to honk when exiting an alley?" (original discussion in Zip Code 60641)

An answer to this question from the Chicago Police Department:

“Technically, the horn is meant … to prevent an accident. It’s not to be used at all times, 24 hours a day,” said Officer Michael Carroll, a Chicago Police spokesman.

Instead, drivers should pull up to the end of the alley and stop, Caroll said. Then they should pull up to the street, stop again and drive."

Cook County Towing/Avondale Collision - Open Meeting at City Hall

Neighbors - we've all complained now we must insist the City follow through! Please attend an open meeting at City Hall, 121 N LaSalle, room 805 on Thurs, Oct 5, 10 AM.

The purpose of this meeting is to address the numerous complaints of reckless driving, aggressive behavior, noise at all hours of the day and night, misuse of the lot at Keeler & Milwaukee in accordance with zoning, and overall "junkyard" state of the property occupied by these businesses.

Please attend. Please bring your neighbors. Please call the alderman's office, and more importantly 911 when you see issues happening in real time.

We deserve respectful neighbors in our community and these businesses are infringing on our safety.

To address the concerns and take steps towards being better neighbors, AC was advised that they needed to operate inside the scope of their business license. Their working hours should not go past 6 p.m. They should provide their contract with CCT for review. They are only permitted 15 (possibly 16) spaces on their Milwaukee-facing lot. They should not load out or receive any cars on the Keeler side. Drops on the Milwaukee side must be on the property (street drops not allowed). Signage was required (and subsequently displayed) pertaining to driving cautiously and being quiet. Vendors are to use the Milwaukee-side entrance only to conduct business.

Per the owner of Avondale Collision, they used to but do not currently have a contract with Cook County Towing.

I call all this non-progress because the last meeting with Chicago Business Affairs and Consumer Protection it was deemed that AC provided all documentation and signage to maintain their business and continue to operate at Milwaukee and Keeler, and since then we've seen the number of cars in the lot continue to grow again, CCT continue to drop off cars after 6pm + AC being open beyond 6pm. The only "win" I've witnessed is that the CCT are less likely to idle next to my home, but, from the comments here and recent comments on Facebook, it sounds like they have just found new spots to and neighbors to disturb. Please keep calling 911 to report reckless driving, please keep telling the Aldermans this is unacceptable behavior from a neighbor.

  • No contract with CCT...what a joke, I’m going to snap a photo every chance I see a cct truck dropping a car off

Take action today by signing our letter to Governor Rauner.

The bill amends the Illinois Vehicle Code to add information about bike safety to the state's Rules of the Road manual and driver's license exam. The added information includes a description of using the "Dutch reach" method when opening a car door to prevent a "dooring" crash if a cyclist approaching from behind.

This past spring the bill passed both chambers with strong bi-partisan majorities. But the final step is still needed.

Tell Governor Rauner to sign HB 5143 to make Illinois streets safer for everybody, especially the most vulnerable users on foot and on bike.

Gun control activism is risk to bottom line, gun maker says

The maker of Smith & Wesson firearms said gun control activism poses a risk to its business, according to a company filing.

American Outdoor Brand Corp., which on Wednesday reported a 25 percent decline in fiscal fourth-quarter revenue compared with last year, listed the "actions of social activists" as a risk factor in its annual report.

Shares fell as much as 12 percent Thursday in New York, the most intraday in six months, and were down 4.6% to $12.62 at 12:13 p.m. Rival gunmaker Sturm Ruger & Co. fell 4.8 percent to $57.45.

    Cigarettes. Drunken driving. Next: Guns?
One of the greatest public health triumphs of the last century impressively still gains momentum: Millions of Americans have quit smoking - and more will follow. Smoking among adults hit a record low in 2017 - to about 14 percent from nearly 16 percent a year earlier.

  • Sorry, one of the highest gun violent city’s. I am not here to argue with anyone. I am just saying we have bigger issues to tackle then worrying about law abiding citizens. That’s all. Have a good week everyone.

  • To J Sebek, No, I will not stop worrying about the inner city. All that garbage is moving our way, slowly but surely. You can't just bury your head in the sand and pretend that it does not effect you.

Editorial: The Endia Martin heartbreak: How a gun changed everything

The death of Endia Martin began with something so ordinary, something that happens in every town across America. Two teenage girls were competing over a boy.

Those squabbles usually remain exactly that, simply squabbles. Sometimes they get physical. Arms and faces get bruised. Pride gets bruised too. But in Endia’s case, a grown-up inserted a silver Smith & Wesson .38-caliber revolver into the fight.

And the gun changed everything.

Putting limits in what a mag can carry before reloading is asinine--as someone here supports. What happens when there are more than 2 assailants? (It's not like criminals always act alone. Quite often, there are 2 or 3 of them.) Politely ask them to hold on so I can reload?
As for pro-gun people being "paranoid" that more laws will lead to confiscation, I would surmise you don't read the reports of confiscation actually being a very real issue in the uber-liberal east and west coasts of America.
Even in Deerfield they tried this make a certain gun forbidden, with ridiculous fines per day for non-compliance to their illegal law. It was stopped by a judge with common sense.
So let's not be disingenuous when we mention confiscation because first it starts with registration, then which type of gun we can own, followed by limits on how many rounds, followed by attempts at confiscation.
Give gun grabbers an inch, and they take 10 miles. If they don't want to own a gun, nobody is forcing them. But their state of mind demands that we not be allowed to own what we choose to own.
Again, law abiding citizens aren't the problem, as some here can't seem to comprehend. Criminals. Are. The. Problem.

  • Neighborhood Dad 27-year resident of North Center/St Bens/Lincol...

Tony B - thanks. But explaining why we register to vote and what information needs to be provided does not debunk my “theory” that one must register to vote in order to exercise the right to vote.

It’s not a theory. It’s a fact. And facts cannot be debunked.

Car Break Ins

Hello fellow neighbors! Was just wondering if anyone else has been subject to any car crimes on their vehicles? In the past two weeks on the 3100 block of Berteau Ave cars have been broken into and windows have been shattered. They’ve managed to aim at the same block for some time now. Keep on the look out and keep your car secured at all times!!

  • Dorothy Schmidt Neighbor

It may sound odd, but if you leave your car unlocked, with nothing of value in it, they won't shatter window to get in. Or get a good alarm system that sounds in your home.

Helicopter in east Albany Park

Anyone know why there's been a helicopter hovering near Lawrence just east of Kedzie (maybe Albany or Troy)?

  • CPD and the Wards are probably more concerned with answering and reacting to calls rather than posting online what's going on. Especially when they're unfounded calls.

  • A helicopter hovering over people's homes for 90 mins is a big and incredibly expensive deal. If they can't find 5 minutes to address it they are incompetent, and we should replace them.
