Question about the carjackings

It seems that we have tens of carjackings every week. Got me thinking. What is this doing to the car insurance costs in Chicago? And can the victims whose cars get totalled sue the thieves direct or does the insurance sue the thieves?

  • We're probably seeing more car jackings because stealing a car the old fashioned way has become more difficult and thieves are less "talented." With social media we hear about it more often than before which injects bias into our observation. Insurance actuaries would know for sure. My guess is it isn't worse than years ago when thieves showed courtesy by stealing your car at night while you slept.

  • "White flight is real, its not about racism, its about survival."

It became racism as soon as you made it about races "surviving" by running away from each other.

GWCA asks that all neighbors in apartments, condos and homes to attack remaining street leaves and get them up. Please bag leaves and put them in your black garbage can or your condo dumpster for pick up. Remaining leaves migrate with rain and snow melt, clog sewer grates and freeze on intersections and crosswalks contributing to flooded basements, vehicles and intersections and contribution to falls.

Thanks everyone! Your leaf efforts will help everyone! Take advantage of the dry days we're having AND burn off some extra Thanksgiving calories!

CHICAGO - Residents of Chicago's Uptown neighborhood should be on guard after reports of three separate muggings that occurred in just 15 minutes Wednesday night.
The first robbery happened around 7:30 p.m. near West Buena and North Clarendon avenues. The victim said four males attacked him and ran east, toward Marine Drive.
Right after that, another man was reportedly beaten up and robbed in the 700-block of West Bittersweet Place.
Minutes later, the group reportedly beat a 50-year-old man to the ground, but he was not robbed. The attackers ran north on Clarendon. The victim was treated at a hospital.
There is surveillance video of one of the violent attacks. The robbers appear to be between 15-18 years old.
I have been in contact with the investigating officers of these incidents.
As I have recording cameras surrounding my estate on Hutchinson and Clarendon,
I will check to see if there is anything that can be helpful to police. I have reported this information to the police.

" I'm not sure why this keeps happening"

what has changed that would stop it from happening?

"My friend and his pregnant wife have a condo in that exact area, and I do worry about their safety"

im not sure if a pregnant woman would be seen as an easy target or just the opposite since if caught there are added charges.

why would anyone want to raise children in that area? Hopefully they dont plan to stay long!

  • DEAR ALL:
Concerning the rampage of muggings November 8th, I received a call last night from the lead detective: one of the 4 criminals is in custody. The CPD is now interviewing the suspect to turn in the other 3 which I am confident he will in exchange for reduced charges. So this good news to enhance safety for our neighborhood.

Rock Engravings of Dogs on Leashes Show Pre-Neolithic Good Boys
A new study of prehistoric rock art reveals how hunters in the Arabian Peninsula pursued prey with dogs over 8,000 years ago - and even controlled their packs with leashes. The engravings represent the earliest evidence for dogs on the Arabian Peninsula and might even stand as the earliest depictions of canines yet, as Science first reported.

How to get a referendum started?

Would anyone know where to go to get a referendum on the ballot? would it be the City or County? and is there a cost?
Thanks.

I think they and the States’ Attorneys and defense attorneys all know about it.

Again, I haven’t researched it. But I doubt anyone has even qualified for those 3 strikes. Meaning nobody has had two prior, separate convictions for the heinous felonies listed and folllowed it up with another such conviction. I’d assume any of the felonies would have resulted in perhaps a 25-year sentence. Two of those would be 50 years. Assuming the person was 18 at the first conviction, and there were only 2 years between the first release and the second conviction. That’d leave you with a 70-year-old needing to commit another heinous crime.

It needs to be a broader list of what felonies count as “strikes.” And a system that doesn’t use those strikes to pressure perps into pleading to lesser crimes to avoid a strike.

Neighborly Litigation (Chadha v. NPES)

Many on this forum talk about litigating, be it for some unneighborly thing or other. Well, here is your chance to read the behind the scenes workings of the Chicago Way in its entirety (link below - get some popcorn and settle in) and VOTE.

This is the culmination of 7 years of attorney fees and a waste of our taxpayer-funded court's time/resources, in my opinion, of course.

Absolutely worth the read. Citizens in this neighborhood need to be aware of how their neighbors are being treated and how their tax dollars are being squandered accordingly.

Ravenswood and Irving Park

Hi all, the police and fire department just shut down Ravenswood north of Irving Park Rd (9:15pm Tuesday 11/14) anyone know why?

  • There was a fire in the uniform company in the 4100 block of Ravenswood.

  • I left 4043 Ravenswood at around 10 and saw four ambulances, two fire trucks, and the police car blocking Ravenswood at Irving. Its odd that something calling for that kind of response wasn't covered in the media.

COYOTE

Holy Sh*t, I'm standing last night on my porch around 10:45pm having my drinks before heading downtown to Gibson's, and this huge animal which I later learn to be a coyote, zipped at 100mph past my house east on Hutchinson.
Unreal.

  • My sister saw that dude by the PNC bank a few months back. Got a good picture of him.

  • A picture of Yves? Or the coyote?

Be careful out there today - streets and sidewalks glaze ice

I just returned from being out. I was east of Ashland Ave. at about Fullerton. The side streets and sidewalks are glaze ice. Cars are fishtailing and skidding trying to stop. I tried to stop at one intersection and forget it --- my car just kept going and stopped about the middle of the intersection. It was that way all the way until Western, where it's not so bad, but is still wet and looks icy in places.

Bicyclists are having a very hard time of it. They skid if they try to slow down or stop, and then when they put their foot down they slip.

So far the main streets are just slushy and are safer.
