Founder of Crate & Barrel says goodbye to the Michigan Avenue flagship store he built

Crate & Barrel remains a strong brand, with stores all over the world, but Michigan Avenue increasingly draws tourists who aren’t shopping for dining tables and sofa beds. People who are can go to the giant Crate & Barrel nearby at North and Clybourn avenues, where parking is free.

On the corner of North Michigan Avenue and Erie Street, he recalled, sat an old terra cotta building, with small windows, that housed medical offices. He bought it, envisioning something radically different.

People shop at the Crate & Barrel store in the 600 block of North Michigan Avenue on Jan. 18, 2018, in Chicago. The location is closing after 27 years .

Founder of Crate & Barrel says goodbye to the Michigan Avenue flagship store he built
Two dining tables remained, and two stuffed sofas, a popcorn maker, a couple of stools, two rows of mismatched chairs, everything on deep discount. Gone were the shelves of white porcelain dinner plates and the parades of polished wine glasses, all that impeccably displayed tableware that once twinkled at shoppers with the promise of a bountiful dinner with lively guests in a lovely home.

Chris Kennedy got it right: people of color are being pushed out of Chicago intentionally

Want to get specific? Let's go back to the area around North and Clybourn. In 1981, it was dominated by Cabrini-Green, a public housing project with roughly 30,000 low- income residents, most of them black.

When I moved to Chicago in 1981, the community around the intersection of Clybourn and Division on the north side was overwhelmingly poor and African-American. Now, of course, it's one of the richest and whitest corners of town.

But wait, there's more. To the west of Halsted and Division is an old industrial area that's one of the hottest real estate markets in...

Redesigned Old Town apartment project to be discussed at community meeting

First revealed in late 2016 as a 14-story building containing 365 rental apartments, the mixed-use project at the corner of North and Larrabee was scaled back to 10 stories and 293 units. It was subsequently rejected in September due to lingering concerns over parking, traffic, and density.
