Copper Cornice Comeback

Newly constructed copper cornice meets the 109 year old cornice

    Copper Cornice Comeback
The Stewart School Lofts are nearing completion as new residents move into the unique floorplans to enjoy amenities like a gorgeous rooftop deck with beautiful views of the city. Outside, Morningside Development has been hard at work with tuckpointing, installing a new roof and repairing the copper cornice that was sagging in sections and in danger of falling completely off.

  • Uptown does have a lot of cheap apartments.

  • I think they've done a great job. And the location is perfect. Granted, there are probably a tiny handful of 'activists' who'd rather see tents and Helen murals here. Fantastic use of this great building I think!

Where are the yard sales?

Hi there Uptown just wondering is your neighborhood having yard or community sales? Esp. looking for Condo sales.

  • Check online for block clubs in the area, then check their activities. Margate Park's is actually the Carmen Winona Block Club and it used to be in June. Selling takes place along Winona and Carmen. There's a fee to participate. Send an email to carmenwinonabc@gmail.com to inquire.

  • Jeffrey Littleton If you can't be a poet, be the poem.

The sale I was thinking of is between Sheridan and Marine Drive. A lot of quirky sale items.

Violence in Edgewater

Hey neighbors I just wanted to clue everyone in to what happened on Thursday night/ Friday morning on Kenmore Avenue between Foster and Berwyn. There was an attempted and fortunately unsuccessful drive by sometime between 9-11 pm on our block with multiple shots fired. The suspect who was a member of the Latin Kings was apprehended in the same location the following morning between 8-9 am as he returned to try to finish the job. He was armed at the time of the arrest. I wanted to post about it as a reminder to keep your head on a swivel and that we as neighbors have to look out for eachother.

  • You are absolutely correct !! Thanks for keeping everyone informed.

Excessive Heat Warning Today Through Monday Night

It's gonna be crazy hot and humid through Monday night, with little relief after the sun sets. WGN says that "Conditions similar to the 1995 deadly heat wave could evolve." This is serious stuff. So we urge you to not only be careful for yourself, but for your pets and most vulnerable neighbors.

Openly gay boxer to visit Chicago for Pride, Puerto Rican parades
He's a legendary professional boxer, but Orlando "El Fenomeno" Cruz has also made a name for himself as the first openly gay man in the sport. That's why officials in Chicago decided to honor him at two of the city's biggest summer events: Saturday's Puerto Rican People's Parade in Humboldt Park and, a week later, the Chicago Pride Parade that travels from Buena Park to Lakeview.

One more key item to mind: Beware of limited street-crossings. Halsted and Broadway are closed near the beginning of and during the parade, so don’t get caught on the wrong side of the road.

Grace Street at Halsted Street

Addison Street at Halsted Street

Roscoe Street at Halsted Street

Wellington Avenue at Broadway

Cornelia Avenue at Halsted Street

Oakdale Avenue at Broadway

During parade weekend, the main Pride event (besides the parade) will be the women-centered Pride celebration Back Lot Bash, which runs from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and offers a post-parade party from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. Both will be in the parking lot behind Cheetah Gym (5248 N. Clark St.).

On parade day, between road closures and traffic, your best bet is to hoof it a little. Try Clark and Belmont or Clark and Addison, or, if you’re coming from the lake, Broadway and Belmont.

As the plaque inside the library says, "This branch library is a fitting and living memorial to the life of an outstanding young American, born and reared in Uptown Chicago, who loved books and learning, and who had dedicated his life to a writer's career until he volunteered for military service and gave his life for his country."

  • This post is about another business coming into Uptown which adds to a wide diversity of options for people to stay in the neighborhood when they eat, shop, and play. That's worth celebrating.

  • Jeffrey Littleton If you can't be a poet, be the poem.

It should be the biggest thing since Popeyes closed...bigger than Harold's since they also closed down.

Or the Chicken Place on Clark that lasted less than a year, or the Jamaican Jerk chicken that also closed after getting their windows shot out then robbed 2 days later.

Or Chester's that lasted a matter of months a block away.

Hopes and prayers for the chicken joints of Uptown?

Annual Literary Festival at Printer's Row.

This weekend the Chicago Tribune hosts the annual Literary Festival at Printer's Row, with author interviews at Jones College Prep in the auditorium. One of the authors speaking will be Erik Beckman. His recent book "Us Against You" offers a quote that is (I believe) pertinent to so much nowadays. "He learns that people will always choose a simple lie over a complicated truth because the lie has one unbeatable advantage....the truth always has to stick to what actually happened, whereas the lie just has to be easy to believe." I'll be at his event.

Go to the Lit Fest. It's worth the visit (Sat. and Sun. 10 AM - 6 PM). See: https://printersrowlitfest.org/
