    "A look at the latter case first. Near Norwood Park, GlenStar Properties wants to build a 299-unit apartment complex along the Kennedy Expressway, just east of O’Hare. As many as 30 of the units would be deemed affordable housing, which means rent for those units would be within reach for people making 60 percent or less of the neighborhood’s median income.

    The location would be ideal — within walking distance of CTA bus routes, the Blue Line’s Cumberland station, and a Greyhound bus stop.

    Up until recently, however, GlenStar’s proposal looked like a victim of aldermanic prerogative — an unwritten rule that gives aldermen veto power over projects within their wards.

    The complex is proposed in the predominantly white 41st Ward, where Ald. Anthony Napolitano presides. Last fall at a city Zoning Committee hearing, Napolitano said he opposed the project because of concerns about the impact on traffic and local schools. In a lawsuit seeking to get the project approved, GlenStar says Napolitano failed to back up those assertions with data. GlenStar says the real reason for Napolitano’s opposition was the project’s inclusion of affordable housing.

    The zoning committee deferred action on the project indefinitely, and the deadline for a vote on the project expired in January. However, GlenStar officials were recently told their proposal will be put on the agenda for the Zoning Committee’s meeting June 26."..."What do the GlenStar and Full Circle proposals share in common? They each offer affordable housing in a part of the city where the job market’s arrow is up and the demand for lower-wage earners is sure to grow. That’s something that should be enabled. Neighborhoods are at their healthiest when they strike a balance between growth and affordability. Arena gets that. Napolitano doesn’t."

    Why do the developers and their supporters insist on wanting to make this and other projects about race or poverty when all many of us are asking is not to put in high density housing? Keep the buildings to 4 stories or less and include the 30 assisted housing units and I believe they would find a lot more support.

    The Chicago Tribune editorial “Affordable housing in the Far Northwest Side: A tale of two projects” urges affordable housing to be considered in the Far Northwest Side of Chicago. For over a century, Far Northwest Side communities have, by design, been residentially segregated. Even today, aldermanic prerogative, an informal practice with no grounding in law, has been manipulated in an unjust manner to exclude under-represented populations. The Far Northwest Side of Chicago needs local and citywide leadership to step up and ensure healthy, inclusive and affordable communities are designed for the future, especially in light of plans to expand O’Hare International Airport.

    The O’Hare expansion is expected to generate 60,000 construction jobs and tens of thousands of permanent jobs in upcoming years. Airport workers will need affordable housing to eliminate hours of commute time. Lessening daily commute time improves quality of life for individuals and families, allowing more time to be spent with children, attend school, work out and become engaged community volunteers. Because of misuse of aldermanic prerogative, the GlenStar Properties project development, containing 299 units, including 30 units of affordable housing, has been in limbo for almost a year. Unless City Council zoning committee members take the high road for the greater good of the city and choose to ignore aldermanic prerogative, in a rare and almost unprecedented manner, the project will not be approved."

Operation Help A Hero
There are hundreds of homeless Veterans in Chicago. The City of Chicago is working hard to create a system where any episode of homelessness is rare and brief through the End Veterans Homelessness Initiative (EVHI). As we house these veterans, the transition from shelter or transitional housing to permanent housing, means many veterans do not have basic items to set up a home. Mayor Emanuel, the City Council, and Jewel-Osco are joining together in the month of June to help homeless Veterans in Chicago by creating move-in kits. Please help by donating new household items.

Who drove across our lawns today?

The 7200 block of Oketo Ave. is in the process of being paved, so someone decides to avoid the barriers by driving across our lawns today to the end of the block about 1pm.

  • I wouldn't complain about that if it is all that happened. A few years ago, someone drove up onto my parkway and right over a sapling tree. One tire on each side of the trunk, and snapped it off just above ground level. Then went back into the street.

We do not feel comfortable with that, as we would have no recourse, if something went wrong with the work. We are looking for a company that is licensed and bonded and that is EXPERIENCED and COMPETENT. We would like a contract to have the mold removed, assess for any tuckpointing damage, identify any moisture source/s and then repair the closet. We might be willing to use a separate contractor to put insulation against the bricks, install green board drywalls and re-install the few shelves and coat rack.

We are hoping to find someone any of you have used who can help us within the next two weeks. Has anyone used a qualified company they can recommend to us?

    Not all mold species are harmful in small amounts and may be addressed with a solution of bleach,depending on the size/severity of the area. If moisture is coming from the exterior it's recommended to open up the wall...

    Not all mold species are harmful in small amounts and may be addressed with a solution of bleach,depending on the size/severity of the area. If moisture is coming from the exterior it's recommended to open up the wall and dry out the wall cavity, naturally you'll need to address the moisture infiltration problem prior to closing up the walls . You never really know the full extent until you see inside the wall cavity which can make estimating the cost/scope difficult. Possible risk to persons can be elevated if there are people in the home with compromised immune systems,elderly,or infants.
    I no longer have contacts that specialize in that field,thus no one to recommend, but you may end up with a few different contractors, carpentry, masonry for repairs and remediation for removal, as not all companies have staff or credentials that will/can do the entire job. I would recommend if you are to hire contractors to get several bids and have the company(ies) you select provide you a certificate of insurance prior to starting work.

  • We have a raised ranch house with a front closet that does the same thing. No ventilation mixed with no insulation makes moisture a problem in that closet. Mold wasn’t bad kind so we used a mold killer spray and now use a rechargeable hanging mini dehumidifier for the last 2 years. No mold since then.

Participatory Budget for 41st Ward

Spread the word to all of your friends in the ward about the opportunity to have a say on how the 41st Ward budget of $1million gets allocated.

First, you will be asked to vote on the % of the budget that gets spent on street resurfacing.

Second, you will be asked to vote on how the remaining money should be allocated by ranking 3 bundled community project packages. One of these packages includes the repair/replacement of the NORWOOD PARK sign near the train station. Each voter can rank the projects (from 1 - 3) in order of importance to them.

And to for this tax to be approved, they only need 20% of the property owners to agree. What's worse, if the business owners don't respond to the vote, that counts as a YES!

EVERYONE NEEDS TO ATTEND ONE OR BOTH OF THE MEETINGS THIS WEEK TO SAY NO!

There are two meetings to attend this week: Go to one or both of these meetings to say "NO" to the SSA:

1. Tuesday, April 17, 4:30-5:30 pm, Edgebrook Library, 5331 W Devon, Chicago, IL (Although their mailer says there is street parking on Devon, they must not have noticed the street is undergoing a massive sewer expansion and there is no parking on Devon right now- allow extra time to find parking)

2. Wednesday, April 18, 5:30-6:30 pm, Edgebrook Library, 5331 W Devon, Chicago, IL

Even if you are a tenant and not the property owner, an increase in property taxes may flow to you if you have a net lease.

I don't want to see more businesses leave or fail because rents need to be increased due to a tax hike like this. I don't want to have to pay more when I got out to eat or pick up my kids from daycare because the taxes get passed along to us in the end, even if you don't own commercial property!

    I was at both meetings. It was pretty clear from both meetings that the business land owners and business tenants don't want any new taxes. They don't believe that the services proposed here would actually decrease vacancy or increase revenue for the existing businesses. It was also clear that despite the chamber saying they mailed notices in March to all of the properties, most people had no idea there were even meetings for this until they saw it on social media. Many of the land owners and business owners still do not know and were not at the meetings.

    The best way to stop all of this now is for everyone (whether a land owner, business owner, or just a consumer that doesn't want to pay more when they buy a pizza or pay for day care in Edgebrook) to call their Alderman as well as the Alderman of the two wards in downtown Edgebrook.
