Reminder to make sure garage doors are locked

This morning when I took the dog out around 515 I noticed footprints in the snow of someone trying to get into many garages on my alleyway. (Nagle & Peterson) It seemed that it was randomly selected going from the main garage door to the side.
To keep the main door really locked, place a screwdriver or a piece of wood thru the side slots to keep the door down at all times. As for the side door, make sure that the locks are tightly screwed on, even if possible add another lock, or even a motion detector light.

Want to know more about this national holiday? Keep reading.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent
question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” Against what seemed like
impossible odds, Dr. King and scores of his fellow citizens of all races came
together and, ultimately, helped bend the moral arc of the universe toward
justice. In recognition of Dr. King’s incredible legacy of service to all, Congress
designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of
service in 1994, and charged the Corporation for National and Community
Service with leading this effort. Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.” Today's commemoration of the MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 15 is an opportunity to remember that history. It is also a time to consider how much work still remains to fulfill Dr. King’s dream.

Sewer back-up & basement drain flooding

We are experiencing a basement drain flooding and sewer back up for a couple of days now. A plumber came to rode the pipes and pumped the backed up dirty water, but they can't get their rodding snake to get to the street - something is blocking it.
We wonder if this might be caused by the recent street utility work - some pipes work and some Poeple's Gas work.

Is anyone else experiencing a similar problem? We are the condo building on Gunnison and Kenneth's corner.

  • good advice from John, I'd follow it

  • Chandra Lynn Dagley Pre-Medicine Chaser From AP

Dead of winter last year, I want to say. I am on Avers. All good suggestion above me, we had someone come out with a camera, and it was a multifocal problem, because the neighbor (small bungalow) also had issues. Drain tiles were indeed a problem., and they are right about where city problem ends and ours began and some issues within the building where the landlords replaced some old pipe.

Can letter carriers read?

I have been so fed up with the mail being delivered when there is no one at the address!
The name is on the box, I’ve called and complained at the Lincolwood branch, I even approached the carrier and told them but I still keep getting them!
Never had I had this problem until they did their rotation. Don’t know who to complain to anymore, just have to get aggravated and complete the job they are suppose to do by either delivering to the correct address or walking to the box which is three blocks away.
Wonder if I can get compensated?
Just needed to vent, thanks for reading.

  • GoHawks! Life Long Resident

By law and per the US post office the mail carrier must deliver the mail. You need to inform the folks sending it if you no longer want to receive. Maybe you could just recycle the paper and move on.

Has anyone noticed our recycling bins not being picked up in the last month?

I had called Laurino's office an submitted a report, but wonder if this is a widespread issue.

Greetings My Neighbors!

Just got this urgent appeal from a sister American Legion Post. I'm asking you to contribute by Wednesday, December 20 to the 2017 Toys-for-Tots Drive, The Drive is short 10,000 toys in two age groups: GIRLS Ages 10 to 13 and BOYS Ages 10 to 13. Toys received by this Wednesday are able to be delivered on time by USMC 2/24 (2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment).

Toys should be new, in the original packaging, and unwrapped. Please – no stuffed animals.

Here’s two ways you can easily contribute:

1) Drop off toys at any IHOPS in Cook County. For our NW area, here are the nearby locations:
IHOP SKOKIE, 9500 Skokie Blvd, SKOKIE, IL 60077
IHOP NORRIDGE, 7056 West Forest Preserve Drive, NORRIDGE, IL 60706
IHOP CHICAGO, 2818 W Diversey Ave, CHICAGO, IL 60647
IHOP CHICAGO, 4210 N Cicero Ave, CHICAGO, IL 60641
IHOP CHICAGO, 5929 N Lincoln Ave, CHICAGO, IL 60659

For other IHOPS, please log onto: http://www.ihop.com/ihop-locations.

2) Donate online to Toys for Tots:
http://chicago-il.toysfortots.org/local-coordinator-sites/lco-sites/local-donate.aspx

Your donated dollars will go a LONG way because the Marines have special buying agreements (big discounts) with the toy stores with NO shipping and NO sales tax! (Toys for Tots is an registered 501c3 charity. So your dollars are also tax deductible).

97% of your donation goes to providing toys, books and other gifts to less fortunate children. 3% is spent on support - principally covering fundraising expenses. Not one donated dollar goes to pay for salaries or any other manpower costs.

Questions? Please contact me at jac.charlier@gmail.com or via Nextdoor or just around the neighborhood.

Folks, we can do this...together. Thank you, in advance!

On Monday, November, 27 he brought in 15 cats from the area between State to King and 67th to 74th Streets. This evening he brought 15 cats from the 6100-6300 blocks of N. Keeler to Kostner. We have been trying to work with this man on alternatives to bringing the cats to the shelter, but he is adamant that this is the route he wants to take. We will continue to try to work with him on other solutions. In the meantime, he says that he intends to keep trapping cats around the city every evening. If your pet cat roams the neighborhood, please keep him inside. If you care for community cats, please make sure they are all spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. If your cat has gone missing recently, please Check petharbor.com/Chicago or visit us at 2741 S. Western to look for him. If you need help with the community cats in your Chicago neighborhood, please contact Tree House Humane Society(north side) or PAWS Chicago (south side) or Whiskers & Tails Rescue Foundation for assistance. Lastly, many of these cats are friendly, so if no one comes for them, we’d love to see them adopted or transferred to one of our partners.
