BABY MONITORS! I was cleaning out the "drawer of entropy" that collects things we haven't seen fit to get rid of and found our old baby monitors. Upon seeing them several things occured to me. The transmit unit is both battery and wall wart powered so I can either set it up in the garage near the window or find someplace else indoors but near a window or other place where it can hear outside well. I further remembered how we would sit bolt upright in bed when we heard crying only to realize that we were on the same frequency as one of our neighbors! Ours are older models that do not have encryption or other things to keep cross talk from happening, so if a number of neighbors on your street have these and everyone sets them to the same frequency, you have a neighborhood audio surveillance network on the cheap! The sound of the tool used to cut off the converters is distinctive, but with the windows closed for winter, not so easily heard. FYI, the thieves use landscape blocks they grab up locally to put under the cars they take wheels from, so be on the watch for those being disturbed.
If we can catch just one bunch of these fools, the police might be able to follow their supply chain back to the buyers and garages that profit from our stolen car parts.
