Hi, neighbors -- I'm just curious if any of you know more details about the man who was hit by the train and died yesterday. The Sun Times names him as "52-year-old James Dillen" -- but that's it. https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/red-purple-line-trains-shut-down-person-removed-from-tracks-at-bryn-mawr/ Does anyone know any more about the circumstances, or about Mr. Dillen?

My brother went to Gordon Tech in the 1990s and loved the auto and wood shops among other things. It is now called DePaul College Prep. My son is in the 6th grade and we are starting to look at high schools. A couple of items on their website alarmed me. One is that it seems that with the change to DePaul CP, they also did away with all shop classes. While my son wants to go to college, I felt it important that he learn to work with his hands as well. It seems so many people go to college only to come out and struggle to find work. Yet I have a friend who is an electrician and he makes fantastic money, and has always been busy.
The other concern was, is DePaul CP a racist school? I see they have a Black Student Union, but none for whites! I do not want to send my son to a racist school since we are a family that is proud of what God made us (I am white, my wife is Hispanic) so we would not mind him joining a group of others that would share like minded ideas about their culture, as I am sure the Black Student Union does, but to have one and not the other worries me in that, this may be a school that teaches that some races deserve special treatment based solely on the color of their skin. Does anyone have experience with DePaul CP? Many thanks for advise. We have a couple of years, but time passes quickly!

Being ranked as the third most segregated city in the country, Chicago is trying to break free of that distinction. Those groups rallying for better affordable housing in more idyllic Chicago neighborhoods found an opportunity to voice their concerns when Ben Carson, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary, made an appearance in […]

I moved just south of Devon Ave off N Wayne Ave a couple of years ago and have noticed that many of the commercial spaces on Devon Ave in my area remain vacant in both older and newer constructed buildings, leading the drag to have a certain gloominess. Does anyone know why this is? Are there just one or two landlords responsible that hold these spaces?

When the Swedish Bakery at 5348 N. Clark closed its doors almost a year ago, it sent shock waves through the neighborhood as residents scrambled to get there last sugar fix from the store. But what was really upsetting to some was that a bit more of Andersonville’s Swedish charm was being lost. However, the building has found […]

I wanted to know if anyone has experienced a never ending car alarm somewhere on Lawrence between Oakley and Leavitt. Today, I was woken up at 7am by this alarm, it is now 9:30am and it’s still going on. Tuesday afternoon and night it seems the same car had the same issue. The alarm went on till 8pm from the mid afternoon. I called 311 which connected me to the police they said they would bring a car out this was a little before 8am but obviously nothing has happened. Does anyone have any suggestions what to do about this?

I'm glad that one of the many empty retail spots is being rent in Andersonville (seriously, I will say this again, the stretch of Clark Street is looking bleak), but I can't say I'm thrilled both personally and for the neighborhood that the best use for the old Swedish Bakery space is a Swedish Covenant doctor's office. Probably won't boost foot traffic much, and won't likely help neighboring businesses. Bottom line is that it's boring. Very boring.

A man wearing a black winter jacket, black scarf, black sunglasses, black pants and dark gloves walked into an Andersonville bank yesterday morning and presented a note to the teller demanding money. Oddly enough, surveillance footage shows the suspect ready to perpetrate the crime with a cup of coffee in his hand. The incident occurred at a Chase […]

The Edgewater community once saw long blocks of beautiful lakefront mansions along Sheridan Road. Unfortunately, most of these properties were demolished through the past half century to make way for multi-unit developments. Now, one of the last surviving area mansions is in jeopardy as a new development proposal calls for its demise. The century-old building at […]

This weekend there are two opportunities for children to get their photos taken with Santa. The Edgewater Chamber of Commerce's Northside North Pole event Saturday will transform Bryn Mawr into the North Pole. Businesses will offer free treats and holiday activities for kids, Santa and his elves will lead a parade from the CTA station, carolers will perform on the street, and The Lytle House (5517 N. Broadway) will host photos with Santa! On Sunday, Steep Theatre will host an open house with Santa in their rehearsal space at 1113 W. Berwyn from 3-5:30pm. Both events will be accepting donations for Care for Real's Holiday Toy Drive as well.
That’s right! Santa will make a special appearance at the Northside North Pole (aka Bryn Mawr Ave.) this weekend and the neighborhood businesses are celebrating. It is a chance for everyone to meet Mr. C himself. He is scheduled to be at the Bryn Mawr el station on Saturday, December 16 at 11 a.m. accompanied by […]

I am seeking to hire a person of any age who can be my go to person for all questions technical. Example: teach me how to download and play podcasts, create interactions between computer, phone, tv, tablet, firestick, echo and so on. We are PC and android users, no apple products.
We don't have any kids and neither of us are naturals. We are glad to consider teens/students who are responsible and interested in making some money. Best case scenario is that we have someone on retainer upon whom we can call as needed and will have time to respond or come over. I will pay better than minimum wage.
