Carpet Cleaning Recommendations Needed, Cat Urine Stain

Hi all,

Hi all,

My cat (the one in my profile photo) has been peeing on my low pile carpet and the staining is present on the reverse/bottom side. The carpet is 6ft by 5ft 9in. I'm not sure of the material, but I'm guessing synthetic. I'm a renter, but the carpet was bought by the previous tenant, so it's technically mine. I'd rather get the carpet professionally cleaned than have to buy a new one. I don't care if the color changes, I just need a way to protect the wood floors and get the odor removed. I've already tried cleaning it by hand, but given the heavy staining on the reverse/bottom size, I'm concerned it'll eventually disintegrate and maybe stain the wood flooring.

Can someone please recommend an inexpensive place to get my small low pile carpet professionally cleaned in Edgewater? Can I take it to a regular dry cleaner or no? This is my first time having to do this.

Thanks!

(My cat is medically fine. He's recently been to the vet.)

  • If you clean or replace the carpet, the cat might go back to peeing on the rug again. Suggest to change the cat box more often or change what's bothering the cat, I.e drop the new flea collar or bell?

  • Mute Mute Me

Its not fair to other responsible renters with cats to not fix this behavior issue. Can u put the box where the cat is peeing? Have you tried different litters? Are you using two litterboxes for one cat? Cleaning twice a day? Tried feliway diffusers. Ive only had two cats in my adult life and both went outside the box til i prompltly investigated and the problem was fixable.sometimes removing the rug fixes the problem.

Saturday Apartment Search

A friend has a job interview this Friday that might mean he could be looking for an apartment Saturday but he is unsure of his schedule. Do you know landlords or apartment brokers that take walk-ins on Saturdays?

  • My new landlord probably would. Call 773.507.9668. They have several buildings in Rogers Park and Edgewater. They may all be 2 bedroom though.

  • You can also try my landlord. He has an apartment available.
You can text or call him at 773-510-2271. His name is John.

Angela Kinney, a Chemistry teacher at Chicago Math and Science Academy (CMSA), has been selected by the University of Chicago for their Outstanding Educator Award. Ms. Kinney teaches AP Chemistry, Honors Chemistry and regular Chemistry as well as College Readiness Science.

The Outstanding Educator Award has been in existence for over three decades. First-year students are asked to nominate an educator who has influenced them, challenged them, or helped them grow intellectually. “We receive letters back from hundreds of students, inspired by teachers who have changed the course of their lives, who taught them to re-imagine texts, to delve deeper into problem-solving, and to think beyond the border of the classroom in the pursuit of their own education,” said James G. Nondorf, state Vice President of Enrollment for the University of Chicago.

Ms. Kinney’s recognition marks the first time a teacher at CMSA has received this award. Ms. Kinney received her Master’s in teaching from North Park University in 2013. She is currently working on her second degree in biology from Northeastern Illinois University. She was born and raised in Cadillac, Michigan and spent five years in an undergraduate program at Michigan State University.

“I am beyond honored and it makes my heart happy that I have impacted students through science and through being human. This award is an amazing reminder of how important our work as teachers is to our students, and what impact we have on their future,” explains Ms. Kinney.

Since 2004, it has been the mission of CMSA, located in the Rogers Park community, to prepare students for college and the world beyond by offering high-quality, college-prep, STEM-focused education that changes the trajectory of students’ lives.

North Side State Sen. Ira Silverstein Accused of Sexual Harassment
CHICAGO - A state lobbyist said Tuesday during a hearing on sexual harassment in Illinois politics that she had been repeatedly harassed by North Side state Sen. Here's an excerpt from the 50th Ward Follies blog that explains why this incident of alleged harassment dramatizes a broader problem:

"There are many troubling aspects to this story, not least of which is the inaction of State Senate President Cullerton, who knowingly referred the matter to the office of a legislative inspector general who doesn’t exist as well as to an ethics panel that has done nothing about the charges for a year. Ira has been aware since 2016 that a complaint was filed against him. It’s been one of the best-kept political secrets in Springfield and Chicago, proof that the Old Boys Network has gone underground, but hasn’t gone away.

"The corruption that has so permeated every level of government in Illinois shows its ugly face here, too. Sexual harassment is so pervasive in Illinois government that legislators are rushing to amend the state’s ethics and lobbyists’ ordinances to include prohibitions against it.

"Unfortunately, the bill as proposed is weak, merely requiring that each state officer, legislator, and agency establish an anti-harassment policy and imposing $5,000 fines on state employees and lobbyists found guilty of such harassment. Those not taking anti-harassment training will have their names published.

"Imagine trying to shame an Illinois politician or lobbyist by telling the public that he doesn’t follow the rules!"

Key Rights for Tenants

The company I rent from is changing all the locks tenants only need one key for - the main gate, each separated entry, laundry room, etc. they have given each apartment one key or two - depending on how many people are on the lease, I think. I always lick myself out so neighbors have keys and I have a few myself. Does anyone know if they have to provide tenants with more keys if asked? I can't just take it and have copies made, I already tried. The hardware store said to talk to my apartment company and that they have to order them. Any feedback? Thanks!!

  • Mute - I'm curious about those lock-boxes. Are they the kind where you push three or four buttons to open it? I think that would make me nervous, and the owner still needs an extra key to put into it.

They wouldn't technically need an extra key they could put their original in there too. And use it to get in their own place.

I think this person said its just for the main gate and laundry room.

Historic Andersonville Home Survives Possible Demolition, Will Be Restored Instead
The historic home at 1436 W. Berwyn has been sold to a family that plans on restoring the property instead of the previous owner's intended plans of demolition. The previous owner of 1436 Berwyn, developer Aidan Development, was planning on demolishing most if not all of the building.

  • This is certainly good news. Much kudos to Maureen Murnane, who found the new buyer and made this all happen within the one month restriction. Maureen has been selling real estate in Andersonville for many years, but this still must have been a lot of work.

It will never be legally safe from teardown unless it is designated a City Landmark. It should be.

Exhibit Opening, Friday, Oct. 13, 6 p.m.
Exhibit Closes, Sunday Nov. 19

Gordon Strömberg is a retired garden and graphic designer who now creates collages. Gordon gets his inspiration from tings around him. He often uses things he finds while walking his dog, things form his garden or notes left on the streets. This can be grocery lists, police notes or children’s drawings and homework. They can be spontaneous or studied. Gordon gets inspired by seeing his surroundings in a fresh way. He finds discarded items that speak of our culture. Chicago street collages will adorn the walls of the Raoul Wallenberg gallery on the second floor.

The Museum’s upcoming exhibits could not be more different. In the main gallery space we will exhibit Swedish tapestry or bonader. One of the most remarkable examples of Scandinavian folk art is the painted picture indigenous to the Swedish peasant home. The commonly used name for these peasant paintings is bonader, and their provenance was to decorate the walls and ceilings of the homes at Christmas time and on feast days, thus adding a note of color and gaiety to the otherwise dark interiors. Between festivities, these canvas or paper panels were taken down and carefully kept, to become a part of the family inheritance. The collection of bonader at the Museum is a collection of extraordinary works on linen and paper, with vegetable and mineral pigments that achieve arrays of color. They were sized for specific wall spaces and hung unframed. Several of the artists were identified, and more than 100 may have practiced the craft. Donated to the Museum in 2000 by the Art Institute of Chicago, the 29 Bonader represent the eighth largest known collection. They originated in 1931 among acquisitions from world traveler Florence Dibell Bartlett of Chicago. Inspired by what she viewed as a decline in creation of folk art, Bartlett acquired pieces she found in 37 countries. She was the founder in 1953 of the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This exhibit will be up Dec. 5 – Jan. 7.
