I figure that it's their karma, not mine, if a 'panhandlers' doesn't genuinely need the money. Any reason that compels someone to stand outside for hours in all weather asking for money suggests they have a problem - whether it's financial, mental disorder, or even lack of character. In any of those scenarios, the person is troubled.

I would also caution that just because someone is not homeless, it doesn't mean they're not in desperate financial trouble. Maybe they need the proceeds from psnhadling to help pay their rent.

The one panhandler I really wonder about is the guy on southeast corner of Ridge and Clark. He seems to be there every day. Anyone know his story?

  • Don

Month after month year after year they panhandle for rent. Seriously

The Philadelphia Church question on N. Clark

Hi Andersonville. There's a church at 5437 N. Clark, next door there looks like a thrift shop but I never see it open. Would anyone know if there is a next door thrift store and what the hours are? (BTW, the church never replies to questions)

Not 'weird' at all. For many people, there actually is a difference between working in/frequenting a neighborhood - and actually living in it. But thanks for make something negative of it - even on Christmas.

I'd be really sad to see it go. It's kind of a landmark, and so unique to Chicago. I wasn't crazy about the food the one time I ate there, but I always loved the look of the place.

Thanks, Larry. Another idea, probably not illegal, is to fill a decoy package with human feces. Not only will this deter thieves, but also save water. You might call it theft prevention with an element of sustainability. By the way, the police don't enforce traffic laws, don't catch thieves and burglars, and can't arrest people with guns. What do they do? What the heck are we paying for? Oh, and on top of this Chicago taxpayers are constantly paying out multi-million dollar settlements because of corrupt cops. Does anyone else find this disturbing?

Couple this effort with the Arcade building residential units - fill in the empty lot next to Green Element - and this part of the south campus will become vibrant and a positive addition to Edgewater.

Thank you Loyola!!! Since 1978 you have made tremendous improvements to your campus as well as to Edgewater and Rogers Park.

Would not have known it unless the woman that was with the guy hadn't rung my doorbell at 5 a.m. to try to get in to get her keys. 911 called and police dispatched. They took him out on a stretcher as he was so intoxicated (there was an empby bottle of grey goose next to him). The police treated the lady with the guy very dismissively not interviewing her at all or asking any questions until she mentioned that he was drinking due to finding out he had been diagnosed with HIV a week or so ago. THEN they scrambled.

no report filed just that they requested transport and treatment.

I'm just impressed by HarleyGrrl's bravery. In this day and age I would be really freaked out if this happened at my home. Tons of compassion for anyone with HIV, cancer, type 1 diabetes, what have you, but also compassion for someone being awakened in their own home by as disturbing an incident as this. Every building in Chicago needs to replace their crummy old doors with security doors. I just went nuts on our condo board for neglecting this after a new owner was attacked on her top floor landing by someone who had come in through our old door that never shuts all the way. Thank goodness Harley did call police. Sounds like this man ran the risk of dying from alcohol poisoning before HIV.

Technical Wizard needed

I am seeking to hire a person of any age who can be my go to person for all questions technical. Example: teach me how to download and play podcasts, create interactions between computer, phone, tv, tablet, firestick, echo and so on. We are PC and android users, no apple products.

We don't have any kids and neither of us are naturals. We are glad to consider teens/students who are responsible and interested in making some money. Best case scenario is that we have someone on retainer upon whom we can call as needed and will have time to respond or come over. I will pay better than minimum wage.

Lincoln Square residents.

  • I've got a great guy for you. He has been my go to guy for many years now. His name is John Cummings phone 773-412-3867

  • Richard Wolf …It takes two to lie; one to lie and one to listen

I speak as an IT professional.

If you want quality help, you're probably going to have to pony up substantially more than minimum wage…especially if you want someone to visit you, in-person, and be ready to take random calls from you…you should expect to pay at least $50 per interaction,...

I don't want to sound cynical, but I would extremely be wary of anyone (teen, student, otherwise) who would offer to provide you tech support for around $15 per hour…that would effectively be a "too good to be true" deal.

Does anybody know if Cookies & Carnitas will ever reopen? It was supposed to be open again November 1st, but I walked by and it is still closed.

Cookies & Carnitas To Re-Open Soon, Owner Considers Future Restaurants In Edgewater

To say that Brad Newman, the owner of Cookies and Carnitas at 5759 N. Broadway, has a diversified plan for his business is a pretty accurate statement. Well known for the delicious farm-to-table  food at his Edgewater restaurant and multiple farmer’s market booths including Green City Market, Newman has worked to build a quality reputation. However, many loyal patrons were surprised […]

  • Liz Houtz Tree House Community Cats Program Manager

The best way to get a lost cat back is by setting out a humane trap at the place he escaped. You can borrow one from tree house humane society at no cost, deposit only. Only trap when you are home to check every 15 mins, keep trap covered and never trap overnight

I wish Anthony would provide an update. Hoping no news is good news.

Presence Closing

I was in there this evening doing some holiday shopping, and was told that the owners are moving on. Being a guy, I didn't shop there much, but they've been there since I've live in the area. I can't think of any other non-grocery stores that have been on the strip as long.

  • HG - Hmm, I thought they had been there longer. But, as I said, I didn't shop there.

The two that I especially miss were American Hands, and Paper Trail.

  • HarleyGrrl Why YES! People actually DO live on Clark St!

it was so sad when American Hands owners retired and closed along with the owner of the Paper Trail retiring and closing.

Yeah, Curb shows where the cab is, how many minutes away, and tracks it as it gets closer. It also lets you add a note to the driver if you want to.

  • headsup not available

thanks - good to know. I will still use Uber as they are cleaning and nicer cars - but it seems we also have Lyft and Curb - awesome.
