How safe is the area near Lawrence/Racine, Racine/Broadway/Lawrence?

I recently signed a short-term sublet here for the summer after trying to do as much research as I could and surveying the area when I went to visit the unit. However, a building nearby, the Darlington Hotel, is apparently a shelter/drug trade haven? For some reason, given the non-activity during the day and run-down nature of the building, I assumed it was just abandoned.

Any info or tips I should keep in mind as a petite single woman, aside from the usual requisite city vigilance? Or is it/will it be extremely bad (given summer is on the horizon) to the point I should look for another subletter?

I would take that to mean that it hasn't taken a turn towards being an undesirable neighborhood. I lived there a few years ago, if you do stay, some of the things I recommend are The Golden House Restaurant & Pancake House. You are right next door at the Darlington. I also recommend GiGio's Pizza, it's also super close and the carry out special can't be beat. Take advantage of the Aragon Ballroom and The Riviera if you like to go to concerts at all. Since I left the Wilson Red Line station has been updated and is now also a Purple Line stop.
I would be interested in your take on the neighborhood if you decide to stay, especially at the end of your sublease.

Perhaps you could enlighten us as to why a realtor cannot tell you how safe or unsafe a neighborhood is? Is this a professional rule or a state law? I would be curious as to the history of this law, and how it was legislated because it just sounds like the moral low road. Is it because you represent the seller? Would the buyer's realtor be able to assist in this matter? Just seems kind of an "awful but lawful" thing to do to a customer.
    Just curious.
(By the way, I did a lot of crime research before I moved to my neighborhood, and surprised that someone didn't do the late night cruise by at least )

  • Could also be connected with red line work- they will have staging areas for equipment and workers. Check with alderman’s office.

Need help changing range hood halogen bulb

I have already injured my shoulder & wrist trying to get the second dead bulb out.
I don't want to go through any apps or clearinghouse websites. I just want someone strong enough to come over soon and do this for a reasonable and normal basic handyman fee. (Abt, the merchant who sold me the hood, wants me to fork over an arm & a leg and wait a week--highway robbery even with a discount). PM me if you can do this.

Never touched the old ones before they failed, but will take your advice. Wonder why they don't make LEDs with that kind of socket--halogens burn very hot and suck a lot of power. LEDs are less delicate, too.

  • Range hood lights? So, definitely not inside oven? If they're not for inside oven use, you can replace with LED. The manufacturer will usually not be selling an LED replacement but you can buy one as long as you match the bulb socket type, diameter/width, length.

I've replaced an E17 T6-1/2 with an E17 LED that's shorter (diameter was important but length was not). I've also replaced the two 20W halogen bulbs (G-something, forgot type) under the OTR microwave oven with 3W LEDs. For this one, it wasn't just the Pins that mattered. The size and the shape of the base mattered.

What will $1,300 rent you in Chicago?
Curious just how far your dollar goes in Chicago? We've rounded up the latest rental offerings via rental site Zumper to get a sense of what to expect when it comes to finding housing in Chicago if you're on a budget of $1,300/month. Read on for the listings.
    http://abc7chicago.com

  • headsup not available

$ 1300 a month = $ 15,600 to your landlord and forever out of your pocket. $ 1300 towards your condo or home payment = $ 1300 to you as the landlord. Not difficult to understand. In 20 years you would have paid down $ 312,000 ! Did I mention you would also enjoy an increase in your real estate value. That is a lot of money in your! pocket.

  • If you don’t have the money on hand to start the process (at least half of society and I’m being generous) or the consistent income to maintain it and build an 8 month untouchable emergency reserve on hand, then it’s a non-starter. Plus people pick up and go a lot...

Plus people pick up and go a lot more than we did 30 years ago. If everything doesn’t go to plan you could end up in the red within 2 years. More variables than not have to be in your favor. I don’t think the majority of society can do it. Wages are the same as they were 15 years ago. It’s only going to get more out of reach.

' I seem to recall that some past discussions about bike lanes (thinking about Glenwood in particular) were less than productive when people with strong biases, and not a lot of empathy, weighed in on the discussion.'

  • To the contrary, public meetings about bike lanes are highly productive when people clearly express their strong preferences and opinions so that decisions can be made. In some past meetings there was strong opinion that bicyclists requests and demands neither reflected the general feeling of a community nor were in the general best interest of a community. Democratic decision making requires votes and opinions which some call biases. Empathy isn't a requirement of the democratic process and never has been.

Heated debate with my brother about Chicago

He clearly points out how violent Chicago is-I told him well he doesn't live here and gasp-people do like living here, not everyone is leaving. He thinks he knows the city just because he works in Stoney Island full-time and then goes back to his bubble in Indiana. I told him working here and living here are two different things. It's too bad the news doesn't talk about the good things in Chicago. They really know how to scare people. I don't even know what to say to him.

We reconsidered because we realized how much we loathed Indiana and how it doesn't fit into the lifestyle that we wanted,my biggest concerns was the schools for my daughter but we figured it out. We are glad we decided to stay. I don't think there truly is a perfect place out there. My husband's best friend left the country after living on the east coast, west coast and here and from an outsider he said Chicago is the best city no doubt. This is even saying this after almost getting robbed on the redline where he just punched the guy in the nose to defend himself.

  • AS..I agree there is no perfect place out there and we all have different places that match our lifestyles and what we want out of life. Everyones "best" is different. Glad you figured out your daughters school and decided to stay.
