Why I voted against the taxpayer subsidy for Presence Health
The City Council yesterday voted to provide a $5.6 million tax increment finance subsidy to Presence Health. I was one of 18 aldermen who voted against the subsidy. Allow me to explain why. The subsidy was given to entice the health care provider to move its headquarters, and the 200 jobs that came with it, from the suburbs to downtown Chicago.

Graffiti/tagging?

I found some graffiti or possible tagging on the fence of our building today--not too legible in the dark but I'll try again tomorrow. Anyone else a target of this around Hollywood and Glenwood?

Grace Owner Set To Open New Restaurant Near Loyola
The Loyola community will soon welcome a restaurant owned by Loyola alumnus Michael Olszewski, who owned recently-closed restaurant Grace. This comes after the sudden closing of the high-end downtown Grace.

Crime near Juneway Terrace

Hi potential neighbors!

I’m interested in purchasing a home 🏠 between Jonquil and Juneway ( around the 1500 blk ) and was wondering if you could give me some true neighborly feedback on what the neighborhood is really like vs what the Realetor is saying ... Thru my own research it appears 400 plus crimes are listed in the last six months ! YIKES!!
I’ve lived in Chicago neighhoods all my life but always in apt complexes ( l know things happen I’m wondering is this a safe move for my family and I?
Would appreciate any info I can gather before making this big decision. Thanks kindly ,

Loyola Redline Mugging This Weekend

I'm not seeing it in the news yet but apparently a young man was mugged Saturday night and has now died from the head trauma he sustained. A friend of his posted this on facebook. "He was found early Saturday morning at the Loyola station in Chicago. He was laying at the bottom of the stairs with his wallet missing and with serious head trauma."
This is all the info I have and just wanted my neighbors to be aware.

The problem with the city's system is they close out duplicate requests as being fixed but don't corelate the requests back so you can track the original as a master request. You're then left wondering why the city doesn't do their job...

Join your Rogers Park neighbors for the Resistance as we march with hundreds of thousands of Chicagoans to send a strong, unified message to Donald Trump that we continue to stand united and support each other in protecting and furthering women's rights and the rights and civil liberties of all people.

The 49th Ward Democratic Party is one of over 100 "supporting groups" that are providing support and marchers for the March to the Polls, the Second Annual Women’s March on Chicago, taking place this Saturday, January 20th.

We are sponsoring a bus that will take you directly to the site of the rally and march at the intersection of Congress Parkway and Columbus Drive and bring you back to Rogers Park that afternoon after the march and rally have ended.

Meet us this Saturday, January 20th, 9:00 a.m., at the 49th Ward Democratic Party office, 1774 W. Greenleaf (at Ravenswood). We will have complimentary coffee and donuts to help get your morning started.

Space for the bus is filling up quickly, so please RSVP as soon as possible to guarantee yourself a seat. To RSVP, visit:

https://goo.gl/forms/QPLLXYAcnHocT2Xi1

Complete the form, letting us know how many people will be joining you. Or call us at 773-973-4949.

Last year, we packed three buses with over 150 Rogers Park residents, who traveled downtown to join 250,000 women and their allies who raised their voices for issues each of us hold dear. That historic day embodied the ongoing fight for women’s rights.

This Saturday, we will come together again to celebrate the spirit of the resistance efforts over the past year and unite to focus on the 2018 elections and beyond.

The 49th Ward is clearly strong and united and the March to the Polls this Saturday is an important act of resistance. Please join us for this historic march.

Women's March to the Polls with the 49th Ward Dems
Travel together with fellow progressive Democrats to the 2018 Women's March to the Polls. We will meet at 9 a.m. at 1774 W. Greenleaf Ave (at Ravenswood) and ride together to Congress and Columbus where the Women's March will begin. Please RSVP below so we can arrange travel.

Two Chicago aldermen want to limit release of condo owners' personal information
Two Chicago aldermen who represent most of downtown want to reverse a state law that makes condo owners' personal information more widely available to their fellow association members. A proposal introduced this week by Aldermen Brian Hopkins and Brendan Reilly would allow association boards to limit the release of owners' names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and weighted votes in Chicago condo buildings and complexes.
    http://www.chicagotribune.com
  • Wazzup not available

being able to contact neighbors in an emergency - like flooding from above - is important. Not every condo has a manager on site - and not every condo has a contact person at night. This ordinance is important and will be appreciated when an emergency arises. There could be an exception for those condos with 24 hour on site contact -like manager or doorman.

  • Some smaller condo associations automatically distribute a list of telephone numbers to all residents for that purpose. This is different and was supposedly quietly stuck into another proposed Condominium Act change. I understand that several state senators and representatives are already starting to work on repealing that one part of the change.

Safety in Rogers Park

Hey all,

I'm a female in my 20s looking to move to Rogers Park in the spring and wanted to hear what you have to say about the safety of the neighborhood. It seems like there's been a lot of gun violence reported...has this always been an issue? Are there certain areas that are better than others? Are there any programs in the neighborhood to increase safety? Thanks for any advice!

I confronted them and they seemed completely unconcerned about the mistreatment. I switched cars to call the police, and also informed the driver. Two other witnesses said that after I switched cars, the couple became verbally belligerent. I don't believe any action has been taken yet.

If you see these people carrying this dog around, please report to police or animal shelter!

I am a former student of the school and looking back, I can say it was a very rich and rewarding academic experience. Honestly, the biggest con of Waldorf is the cost of tuition, but you definitely get what you pay for. The other main concern is college prep. The curriculum certainly expands the creative mind and emphasizes a non standard approach to problem solving, but in the real academic world many students have problems adjusting to standardized tests and the rigors of college examinations.

Yesterday's death at the Bryn Mawr Red Line stop?

Behavioral issues are generally due to mental health issues. Its a controversial subject.

Many a warm summer night was spent there with a burger and a beer...or two..or three...

One of the reasons Moody's beer garden became so popular was that it was all-ages: you could bring the family and eat outside. Also, the bar indoors was very dark--and, before anti-smoking ordinances were enacted--smoky as hell. So the outdoors became a refuge from smokers too--people still smoked outside, but they could wave the smoke away. (And you & they could see each other and move to a different table).

I never knew any other Moody's but the one on B'way. I know it's not the end of an era, but it's always sad when a person who established something beloved passes away. May his memory be for a blessing,

Christmas Tree Pickup/Recycle? - YES!

I just wanted to give an enthusiastic shout-out to the non-profit group, Do The Right Thing - Recycling (http://dtrt-recycling.org/). They just came to my 3rd floor walkup (yes, at 8pm on a Saturday!) and did an exceptional job removing my tree and taking it to be recycled. Well worth the door-to-door $25 donation/charge. (It's only $15 if you meet them at the curb.) Check them out and schedule away your worries of the schlep.

Tree Recycling Program - Do The Right Thing! Recycling
Do The Right Thing! Recycling is offering holiday tree pickup services for the north side of Chicago. We pick up your tree directly from your living room floor. We come equipped with reusable tarps and cords, and all we ask is that you remove all decorations from the trees including lights and tinsel.

I thought those first 4 fences were buried on site under the dirt that was hauled in to fill the hole.

Moving to Edgewater

Hi! My wife and I are looking to buy our first condo, and we we're wondering what the general opinion is of Ardmore between Ridge and Clark and if there is anything we should be aware of. Thanks!

  • Parking is difficult there. More then most places.

Depends on what part of Edgewater. East of B'way, parking is difficult because of so many apt. bldgs with so few garage spaces. West has more single-family homes and 2-flats with garages, so on-street parking's easier to find. I live less than 1/4 mi. from a Red Line station, and it has almost never taken me more than 45 minutes, even in rush hour, to get as far south as Jackson St. (Track problems & the like can happen on any line). Ubers & Lyfts are plentiful; and many of the city's taxi drivers live here--easy to flag down a cab on B'way.

I grew up in NYC, and to get from Queens to Brooklyn on the subway, you had to go through Manhattan. (My husband's commute to college--no dorms at CUNY schools--was 2.5 hrs. each way every day). The NYC subway system is deteriorating due to budget cuts. I lived in Seattle, and drove to law school in south Tacoma-->1 hr. each way). Be glad you don't live in DuPage or Kane County and commute into the Loop. And don't even ask about Los Angeles or the Miami-W. Palm I-95 corridor.

We Chicagoans don't realize how lucky we are when it comes to commuting from a residential 'hood to downtown.

Shovel your sidewalk

Resident :

If you have not shoveled your sidewalk, please do so on this Sunday.

It is supposed to reach 30 degrees.

....... ( The cold temperatures will not be an excuse ).

By city ordinance, you are to shovel your sidewalk.

.......( Make walking SAFE for everyone , especially the elderly ).

Thank you for being a responsible resident.

Kenny P.

  • Wow. A simple posting about shoveling snow sure got someone all triggered up and all defensive about protecting the boys.

No Helen. Why are you opposed to original content on this site and just providing information people want?
