Yesterday's death at the Bryn Mawr Red Line stop?

Hi, neighbors -- I'm just curious if any of you know more details about the man who was hit by the train and died yesterday. The Sun Times names him as "52-year-old James Dillen" -- but that's it. https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/red-purple-line-trains-shut-down-person-removed-from-tracks-at-bryn-mawr/ Does anyone know any more about the circumstances, or about Mr. Dillen?

Thanks,
Michael

52-year-old man fatally struck by CTA train at Bryn Mawr
Normal service resumed on the CTA Red and Purple lines about two hours after a person jumped in front of a train Friday morning in the North Side Edgewater neighborhood, according to police. The man jumped in front of the train just after 7 a.m.

I just feel like the word troubled has negative connotations attatched to it. We never say a person who suffers from a physical illness is troubled. Troubled is usually attatched to people with mental issues not physical.you know people who have behavioral issues are often labeled as troubled. Behavioral issues are generally due to mental health issues. Its a controversial subject.

  • ok, nitpick the word. but i am a hospice volunteer and i hear similar sentiment all the time.

One of the reasons Moody's beer garden became so popular was that it was all-ages: you could bring the family and eat outside. Also, the bar indoors was very dark--and, before anti-smoking ordinances were enacted--smoky as hell. So the outdoors became a refuge from smokers too--people still smoked outside, but they could wave the smoke away. (And you & they could see each other and move to a different table).

I never knew any other Moody's but the one on B'way. I know it's not the end of an era, but it's always sad when a person who established something beloved passes away. May his memory be for a blessing,

Moving to Edgewater

Hi! My wife and I are looking to buy our first condo, and we we're wondering what the general opinion is of Ardmore between Ridge and Clark and if there is anything we should be aware of. Thanks!

Depends on what part of Edgewater. East of B'way, parking is difficult because of so many apt. bldgs with so few garage spaces. West has more single-family homes and 2-flats with garages, so on-street parking's easier to find. I live less than 1/4 mi. from a Red Line station, and it has almost never taken me more than 45 minutes, even in rush hour, to get as far south as Jackson St. (Track problems & the like can happen on any line). Ubers & Lyfts are plentiful; and many of the city's taxi drivers live here--easy to flag down a cab on B'way.

I grew up in NYC, and to get from Queens to Brooklyn on the subway, you had to go through Manhattan. (My husband's commute to college--no dorms at CUNY schools--was 2.5 hrs. each way every day). The NYC subway system is deteriorating due to budget cuts. I lived in Seattle, and drove to law school in south Tacoma-->1 hr. each way). Be glad you don't live in DuPage or Kane County and commute into the Loop. And don't even ask about Los Angeles or the Miami-W. Palm I-95 corridor.

We Chicagoans don't realize how lucky we are when it comes to commuting from a residential 'hood to downtown.

This year we cut the ribbon on two exciting park projects: a brand new playground at Senn Park (Elmdale and Greenview) and a new dog park along the Lakefront Trail at Bryn Mawr. Both of these projects would not have been possible without the support and involvement of community members.

Following a three-year fundraising campaign, the Swedish American Museum (5211 N. Clark St.) installed a fiberglass replica of their iconic wooden water tank atop the building this summer...

Gallery 1070 (1070 W. Granville) is a new arts gallery and event space run by Edgewater Artists in Motion. We look forward to enjoying community events in this space in the new year.

The spike in violent crime that has plagued Chicago since 2016 has even more gravity when viewed in comparison with six decades of homicides in Chicago. I don't think this is entirely true. While we are all responsible for our individual actions all things being equal, we aren't making those decisions in a vacuum.

When government policies are in effect that encourages certain behaviors or does not adequately punish certain behavior, then I think the government policies are also at fault in some proportional value.

IE. If violent offenders don't believe they will be held accountable for their actions (either low risk of being caught or low level of sanctions), there is less disincentive to take certain actions. Thus the potential benefits could outweigh the potential risks even in a rational equation.

Put another way... if robbing a passerby of their paycheck will net me $1000 and there is a 5% risk of being caight or adequately punished, a subset of the population will take that risk.

If there is a 50% chance of being caught (or shot in self defense) and a 100% chance of being incarcerated if caught, even a hardened criminal might not take the action.

    Just my humble opinion...

  • Mute Truth is not determined by majority vote

Yes i get it but a certain type of person who only refrains from commiting a crime like murder in the first place because of laws has alot more to do with things outside of our leaders control.

Empty commercial spaces 1200-1400 Devon Ave

I moved just south of Devon Ave off N Wayne Ave a couple of years ago and have noticed that many of the commercial spaces on Devon Ave in my area remain vacant in both older and newer constructed buildings, leading the drag to have a certain gloominess. Does anyone know why this is? Are there just one or two landlords responsible that hold these spaces?

Laura_M, I can see why you would think that. But actually the whole Arcade building, which is a historical property and has housed PP for years, is coming down now and will be replaced by some condos, etc. So that housed my dentist, a coffee shop, and other businesses as well.

Swedish Covenant Hospital rents space in Swedish Bakery building

I'm glad that one of the many empty retail spots is being rent in Andersonville (seriously, I will say this again, the stretch of Clark Street is looking bleak), but I can't say I'm thrilled both personally and for the neighborhood that the best use for the old Swedish Bakery space is a Swedish Covenant doctor's office. Probably won't boost foot traffic much, and won't likely help neighboring businesses. Bottom line is that it's boring. Very boring.

Yea i seem to remember when i lived at wilson and seeley i saw the tax bill for the building and it said lakeview. Having neighborhoods inside of neighborhoods is a bit confusing to me. Such as ravenswood which is a part of lincoln square etc. Why do we need all these neighborhood labels?

  • Jersey Joe Recent Transplant

I like the discussion style here. We start down one topic and end up with a completely different one. How about we agree that Andersonville is no more than a state of mind? And that this criminal selected a neighborhood with a poor clearance rate. Like the bank robber, Willy Sutton said: I could rob a bank in Andersonville with one hand because no one will catch me. That, and there are a lot of good coffee shops around.

Any idea when the water will be back on at Granville Beach?

Went to get my mail around noon and there was a literal waterfall coming out of the ceiling in the lobby. The picture doesn't show the true niagra falls of water that was flowing.

  • It was freezing and we bought this window seal kit from Lowe’s, which did wonders...and a space heater. Most of the cold came through the Ac vents and a lot came in through the windows, I think cause they’re old.

  • Yeah we covered up all our air conditioning vents with thick plastic. I just carry a space heater at this point from room to room. I will definitely try the window seal kit! And my water is back on but it is brown so I will let it run for awhile. Thank you for the great tips! xLaura

Panhandles

There’s to many Panhandles on the Bryn Mawr strip !! And I know they’re not homeless !

I figure that it's their karma, not mine, if a 'panhandlers' doesn't genuinely need the money. Any reason that compels someone to stand outside for hours in all weather asking for money suggests they have a problem - whether it's financial, mental disorder, or even lack of character. In any of those scenarios, the person is troubled.

I would also caution that just because someone is not homeless, it doesn't mean they're not in desperate financial trouble. Maybe they need the proceeds from psnhadling to help pay their rent.

The one panhandler I really wonder about is the guy on southeast corner of Ridge and Clark. He seems to be there every day. Anyone know his story?

  • Don

Month after month year after year they panhandle for rent. Seriously

The Philadelphia Church question on N. Clark

Hi Andersonville. There's a church at 5437 N. Clark, next door there looks like a thrift shop but I never see it open. Would anyone know if there is a next door thrift store and what the hours are? (BTW, the church never replies to questions)

Keys Found @ Sheridan and Balmoral

Found at the bus stop on the west side of Sheridan. Currently at 5331 N Sheridan. Will be brought to Wing Hoe (if they take them)

  • They didn't happen to be on a faded blue carabiner, did they? Was there a black Divvy fob?

  • robin in WRP I support a 28th Amendment 4Free & Fair Elections!

I only saw them for a moment, and I don't really remember. The person who found them was going to bring them to Wing Hoe; they may have been forwarded to the police station

  • Mute Truth is not determined by majority vote

Of course there is a difference. Doesnt mean somethings "demise or survival would probably be negligible" to them.

I still work my magic on christmas no need to thank me!

  • I'd be really sad to see it go. It's kind of a landmark, and so unique to Chicago. I wasn't crazy about the food the one time I ate there, but I always loved the look of the place.
