Observing Epiphany With A Plunge In The Lake
Brrrr! No matter how long you live in Uptown, there's always something new to learn. Thanks to reader Bill Biederman, who was there to record it, we discovered that it's a religious rite in the Russian Orthodox Church to take a plunge into water on Epiphany, which is celebrated by Orthodox Christians on January 19th.

Car break-in with no theft

Sometime last night or early this morning, our car was broken into and the glove box ransacked, but nothing appears to have been taken. We could have sworn we locked the doors, but they were all unlocked. Apparently, the same thing happened to a neighbor. Anyone else! This is near Glenwood and Winnemac.

  • We had something similar happen a couple weeks ago, also thinking we had locked the doors but assumed we must not have. Again, nothing that we can tell was taken.

We had something similar happen a couple weeks ago, also thinking we had locked the doors but assumed we must not have. Again, nothing that we can tell was taken.

If thieves are doing that to determine if folks are home, not sure if that’s the smartest plan. We have garages, so while one car may have to park on the street most people around have a couple cars and one will always be on the street and one in a garage or parking space for the building. There have also been times when we’ve had to park a block or two away, so unless they’re continually doing a sweep it’s hard to be certain that folks aren’t home.

The ol' airport Armani scam...of course.

  • Here's the important info:
According to photos, the man is driving a silver Jeep with Minnesota plates.

If you are approached by anyone with an offer to buy jackets, call 911 to report a con game.

You can also call your local police district's CAPS Office if you have any details that might help identify him. South of Lawrence is the 19th District (312-744-0064) and north of Lawrence is the 20th District (312-742-8714).

Scams like this exploit the greed of their victims.

If it's not an outright scam it is someone selling stolen merchandise. Don't buy clothes in the street.

Lincoln Towing Stokes Again

The much deservedly maligned Lincoln Towing decided the best way to close out 2017 was to illegally tow a moving van packed with belongings and to make that burn a double their personal car too.

The incident occurred close to Broadway Lawrence...thank you Alderman Pawar for keeping up the pressure on LT. At least someone in the city council is paying attention.

Feeding Kitten

Hello EB neighbors! I found a kitten without its mother in sight. Because of the brutally cold weather,I didn't want to leave it outside. The kitten looks young enough to still require nursing. I asked my neighbor to pickup supplemental kitten milk and feeding bottles from Petco en route to his trip to Whole Foods. Do anyone know if there is a proper way to bottle-feed kittens? Is it best to feed them while they stand upright? On their stomach? Side?

Black Veil Brides are back in black, but they never left
Fun game: make an 80s hard-rock/hair-metal/stadium-goth/early-thrash-metal playlist, sneak a track by LA's contemporary Black Veil Brides onto it, and see if anyone notices. Bonus points if you pass it by anyone old enough to remember some of the junk-and-fire-everywhere hard-rock videos that looked like they were filmed in an unused corner of a Mad Max set and were de rigueur back in the day.

This year we cut the ribbon on two exciting park projects: a brand new playground at Senn Park (Elmdale and Greenview) and a new dog park along the Lakefront Trail at Bryn Mawr. Both of these projects would not have been possible without the support and involvement of community members.

Following a three-year fundraising campaign, the Swedish American Museum (5211 N. Clark St.) installed a fiberglass replica of their iconic wooden water tank atop the building this summer...

Gallery 1070 (1070 W. Granville) is a new arts gallery and event space run by Edgewater Artists in Motion. We look forward to enjoying community events in this space in the new year.
