Throwing salt on a sidewalk can be more dangerous than not salting at all. Salt will melt the snow and form a puddle which will freeze creating black ice. My last two wipeouts and close calls were from black ice. Salt is bad for dogs, the cement, and plants on both sides. Heavy salters usually have pock marked sidewalks that look terrible.

There is nothing wrong with a thin veneer of snow because it provides some friction. This is winter which means wearing a good set of boots. You can't expect to walk everywhere in heels ladies.

Is that man still trapping feral cats around the city?

It was on the news a few days ago http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2017/11/30/chicago-man-trapping-cats/ but I have not heard any updates.

I'm not sure how I feel about what he's doing. On one hand, I do not like the thought of half a million cats roaming the streets, and killing birds, and freezing to death.

But on the other hand, it is sad that they are going to an over crowded kill shelter.

Just curious to know if he is still at it?

Chicago Man Trapping Cats Hopes To Get City's Attention
CHICAGO (CBS) - A Chicago man, who has trapped more than 40 cats this week, was back at it on Thursday. Chicago's Animal Care and Control (CACC) asked Disgrace Felyer to stop, and even issued a warning to cat owners, or those who care for feral cat colonies, to keep their feline friends indoors.

The pest abatement program I was referring to had to do with pigeons and the barbed and sharp wires around CTA train stations and other areas. I didn't mean to at all suggest that birds of prey were being purposely used as part of any pest abatement program. My aim was simply to point out some problems with the overgeneralized outdoor cats vs birds argument.

These articles reference Bald Eagles being sighted in Chicago:

I see it didn't take long for this to turn into a thread full of comments about the alleged benefits of having non-native predators like cats running wild in the city. The thread topic really is about this guy who is acting within the law to trap illegally free-roaming house cats (not ferals, even) and turning them in to CACC, which is supposed to (but clearly can't) accept them.

Perhaps we should also talk about the fallacy that no-kill shelters are an actual solution to those which euthanize animals which cannot be adopted out. Because that's another thing that this trapper is demonstrating.

Painter Reccomendations

I had my condo painted a few weeks and the painter did a horrible job. He didn’t patch holes, didn’t use dropcloths, and didn’t paint the ceilings (this is an abbreviated list of what went wrong). I contacted Paintzen to get a quote and they said they would have to repaint everything, which I would rather not do.

  • I decided to go with Chicago Painters, Inc (http://www.chicago-painters.com) and they're coming on Monday. They came out for a quote last Saturday and were great and didn't try to upset. I asked about painting the kitchen cabinets and they said it wouldn't be worth it, since the paint would come off due to the type of cabinets. They gave a little discount if I booked before March and with that discount the whole job is about half of what I was paying the other company. I'll let everyone know how it all turns out, but so far their office manager and dedicated project manager has been extremely helpful and professional.

Rental properties in Lake View

Hi! My husband and I are moving from DC to Chicago in April and are looking to rent in before buying. We've never worked with a broker before but think that may be our best option, since we'll only have a day or two to visit and find a place.

Does anyone have suggestions on a broker/agent? Thanks!

(She's tiny so doesn't really startle people, but definitely want to help her to learn not to bark at people.)
I've gone to some training facilities and it's all great while we're there (and I do practice with her what we've learned), but I think it would be much more helpful to have someone who would walk with us and see what's occurring and give some training strategies. Know of anyone? Thank you!

CHICAGO - Residents of Chicago's Uptown neighborhood should be on guard after reports of three separate muggings that occurred in just 15 minutes Wednesday night.
The first robbery happened around 7:30 p.m. near West Buena and North Clarendon avenues. The victim said four males attacked him and ran east, toward Marine Drive.
Right after that, another man was reportedly beaten up and robbed in the 700-block of West Bittersweet Place.
Minutes later, the group reportedly beat a 50-year-old man to the ground, but he was not robbed. The attackers ran north on Clarendon. The victim was treated at a hospital.
There is surveillance video of one of the violent attacks. The robbers appear to be between 15-18 years old.
I have been in contact with the investigating officers of these incidents.
As I have recording cameras surrounding my estate on Hutchinson and Clarendon,
I will check to see if there is anything that can be helpful to police. I have reported this information to the police.

  • DEAR ALL:
Concerning the rampage of muggings November 8th, I received a call last night from the lead detective: one of the 4 criminals is in custody. The CPD is now interviewing the suspect to turn in the other 3 which I am confident he will in exchange for reduced charges. So this good news to enhance safety for our neighborhood.

I think they and the States’ Attorneys and defense attorneys all know about it.

Again, I haven’t researched it. But I doubt anyone has even qualified for those 3 strikes. Meaning nobody has had two prior, separate convictions for the heinous felonies listed and folllowed it up with another such conviction. I’d assume any of the felonies would have resulted in perhaps a 25-year sentence. Two of those would be 50 years. Assuming the person was 18 at the first conviction, and there were only 2 years between the first release and the second conviction. That’d leave you with a 70-year-old needing to commit another heinous crime.

It needs to be a broader list of what felonies count as “strikes.” And a system that doesn’t use those strikes to pressure perps into pleading to lesser crimes to avoid a strike.

Be careful out there today - streets and sidewalks glaze ice

I just returned from being out. I was east of Ashland Ave. at about Fullerton. The side streets and sidewalks are glaze ice. Cars are fishtailing and skidding trying to stop. I tried to stop at one intersection and forget it --- my car just kept going and stopped about the middle of the intersection. It was that way all the way until Western, where it's not so bad, but is still wet and looks icy in places.

Bicyclists are having a very hard time of it. They skid if they try to slow down or stop, and then when they put their foot down they slip.

So far the main streets are just slushy and are safer.

One day parking in Lakeview?

I have a friend who wants to come to the city (by car) and go to the museums, theaters, etc. and stay overnight. I live near Broadway/Waveland, in the heart of Wrigleyville and the parking is cost prohibitive. I looked at some of the garages and the one on Broadway charges $45 for 24 hours - ouch! Street parking is limited to 3 hours.
Would anyone know where someone could park for one day and overnight without paying with their life?
I also have relatives who want to visit.

  • the only answer here is spothero...it is simple, almost always significantly cheaper than regular charges and available spots all over city. Or she should plan to come on weekday mid morning and everywhere (except downtown or wrigleyville if cubs day game ) including edgewater you will find open free street parking. If either of those options dont work i suggest she use alternate form of transportation to get to the big city

We need to go with her down to medical appointments at Northwestern. She has a thing about riding with other people.
Thanks for any advice!!

She will easily qualify for Pace ADA Paratransit Service. It is a wonderful service for handicapped individuals and costs $3.00. Call their Help line at 312-663-4357. As with any service like this you may need to spend a little time getting to the right place to help you, but it is well worth it. They have all handicapped accessible vehicles with ramps etc.

  • Wow, this is great information, didn't realize any of this existed. Bookmarking for future needs. Thanks to all.

Anyone recognize this tag?

This was left on my building last night...anyone recognize it? Thanks!

I guess the only way would be to be familiar w gangs. but non gang related tags are usually more artistic looking. Cursivy type writing. Tags usually don't have symbols attatched. Again I'm not a graffiti specialist so I'm not stating fact.

I did a little research online on the difference between the two because I wasn't sure either. What I found was along the lines of what Mute said, that non-gang related graffiti is referred to as "tagging" and is more about artistic expression. Tagging artists or crews often try to get their "tag" (personal symbol) in as many places as possible (and in crazy, hard to reach places) because their reputation as a tagger grows based on the exposure of their tag. I also read that gang graffiti tends to be used to mark their territory or as a threat to other gangs.

I'm not a specialist either, just sharing what I read online, so take it with a grain of salt. :) Definitely an interesting subject though!

Anyone else have water damage from that all day storm yesterday?

Our 100+ year old brick 6 flat - we live on the top floor - had a small puddle of water on a front room window sill this morning. 'Must have come in from the roof and then down behind the wall. Drat.
I wonder if it is an insurance issue? Anyone have a similar experience?
Thanks for any advice.

  • Hi Anne. We used Bral Restoration for the masonry on the front and roof (e.g., parapet wall). It was not cheap (I don't think anyone is) but I really trusted their opinion. With all the rain we had last week we didn't have a drop come in the house. Al Kristoffer is the owner of Bral - their website is http://www.bralrestoration.com/. Good luck - I know this is a very unfun way to spend a lot of money :)
