Gun shots and drag racing, 1:15 a.m., 7/8/2018

Anyone hear anything like this on Archer near Lock Street? The drag racing is one thing, but the gunfire/racing combination was a first for me since I’ve been here.

  • And have for as long as I can remember...Just part of every day life. Drag racing car and crotch rockets shooting guns ahhhhh no. That's dangerous and can get an innocent person killed. Train horn to my knowledge has never killed anyone.... Have a good day....Reality

    __

You sir are a classic definition of a troll.

    Consider yourself <MUTED>

  • The “drag racing” has been going on for years. They come from loomis and shoot down Archer and end up in the Mariano’s parking lot almost every Saturday night around 1:30/2:00am.

Not sure about the gun shots but if it’s the same group they haven’t had issues like that as far as I remember.

Unauthorized No Parking Sign?

There is a grassy event space behind the gate and they posted this no parking sign on their gate. It is not a sloped curb and there is bike racks in front of this gate so there is no need to have that sign since no cars will ever go in. They also tend to put cones out to hold parking spots but it's a busy street (Morgan and 33rd) with limited parking as there are businesses, restaurants, galleries, homes nearby; not to mention street cleaning twice a week and white sox restrictions. Called 311 and they were rude and said it may be a movers sign but this is not the case as there is no dates and it clearly does not say "City of Chicago" as other signs may say. Can anyone direct me as to what to do? Or whether it is even legal?

  • Official curb cuts are on file with the City. I also I recall that properties, which have them are supposed to be taxed extra on their property taxes.

I would confirm with your Alderman and they should be able to advise what to do. (If it was an official zone, the Alderman would have to approve it.)

I lost my cat, Squirrel Saturday afternoon. The door was left open during a move and she got out.

She was last seen by my apartment at 18th Street and Ashland in the Pilsen neighborhood.

She is a 6 year old female domestic long hair. She is grey with some cream, tan and white markings. She has green eyes and a tipped left ear.

She was timid and is still slow to warm to strangers but has really started to come into her own. I have had her as an indoor house cat for the past 5 years in Chicago. I assume with her behavior and personality that she is likely scared and hiding somewhere right now.

I am distraught over the whole situation.

  • I used to bang canned food around my home to find my guys if they got out. Try that, and call her, maybe you'll find her. Good luck!!

  • She is probably hiding somewhere nearby. Put out her litter box. When it is quiet, go out and call to her. She could also have gotten into an open garage so check with your neighbors. I am confident she will find her way home. My friend lost her cat the same way and she came home 28 days later.

  • So sorry that you lost your cat. I think that there are several facebook and other sites where you can post your pictures and see if someone has found her. If you need help with that, I am happy to search other threads for the links.

    Hope this helps.

Looking for info on old McKinley Park storefronts and taverns

Walking around the neighborhood you can't miss all the buildings, mostly sitting on corners, that use to be stores or taverns in the past. I'd love to hear from any residents that remember what some of these places were, when they closed down, and what it was like inside. I've tried doing research online, but it's hard to find specifics.

A couple buildings I've noticed close to me:

corner of 36th & wood
36th & honore
old bar at 36th & damen
wood & 34th pl
Wolcott & 38th st

Any info would be appreciated. I love learning about our neighborhood's history.

  • I don't have pics but I think 36th and Wood used to be called the FBI Tavern. Never had the chance to visit.

  • 36 and Damen was the 3600 Club alot of Daley family members patronized it

Merging Bridgeport Churches and Schools

Anyone have any update abouts what's going on with Bridgeport Churches and Schools merging?

  • emj1900 bp

Catholic school system has nobody else to blame but themselves for their dwindling church and school attendance. PERIOD! They are going merge whether you agree or disagree. And it's sad that the merging schools had to suck up their money in the red... The almighty Vatican needs to suck it up.... Maybe they can open that vast vault they have their and sell off a few gold chalices... of which they have plenty...

  • Lifetime, I agree private education are expensive and many people can't afford it. But there is also a dilema where without more revenues, the schools cannot be properly funded. I know the Archdiocese expect each parish to be self sustaining but its time they make an investment and open up...

Lifetime, I agree private education are expensive and many people can't afford it. But there is also a dilema where without more revenues, the schools cannot be properly funded. I know the Archdiocese expect each parish to be self sustaining but its time they make an investment and open up their pocketbooks.
In addition, St. Therese was able to increase their school enrollment with a long waiting list due to the high educational standards set. Many other Catholic schools are within a 1 or 2 mile radius from St, Therese. These other schools need to do more to reach out to the community and raise their educational standards. Their are people in the neighborhood willing to pay for a better education for their kids.
