Diagonal white lines on side of road? Am I allowed to park here?

Please see the attached picture. I don't think i've ever seen these road markings in the city before. What do these diagonal white lines mean? There were a few separated ones near the curb (this is the closest space to the intersection) I did not see any tow zone signs or yellow marked curb or anything else to indicate it is not a valid area for parking. I could not really find any information about these markings except for that they are sometimes used near handicap parking, however I did not see any handicap parking signs on the street either. Anyone have any idea?

  • I would not park in these spaces. I don't know how far the requirement is for parking near an intersection but it's pretty far. Call your alderman for more specifics.

  • I would have thought that means No Parking, but check this out from a City of Chicago, Dept of Finance web page:

    Parking Outside Diagonal Markings

Chicago does have parking spots that are marked by diagonal lines. You must park within these lines so that other motorists can park in spaces next to yours without difficulty.
    https://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/fin/supp_info/revenue/tips_for_avoidingparkingtickets.html

  • I think the painted line means something like "this is not the roadway."

If it's not the roadway (or public way or highway, etc.) then there's no right to put a vehicle on it.

I couldn't find a specific ordinance/statute/code to cite in case someone parked over such painted diagonal markings... but since the solid line nearest and along the street probably marks the "curb line," the violation would probably be for parking on a sidewalk or parkway or public property or something like that.

Water main replacement

Has anyone replaced their ancient lead water main under concrete using a trenchless/directional drilling method? I have a new box/meter in the front and need about 35' feet of new copper line laid under concrete. I got three quotes and they are all about $9000. Does that seem the going rate?

ATM Skimmer scams run rampant - even at bank ATMs

Word to the wise: No matter where the card reader is located - banks, stores, gas station pumps - ALWAYS yank on it before inserting your cards.

This story is about Lakeview, but it could just as easily be about Logan Square or anywhere.

Another ATM Skimmer Found In Lakeview; At Least A Dozen Devices Recovered On North Side Since May 1
Chicago cops recovered another ATM skimming device in Lakeview on Sunday afternoon. It's the second data-sucking contraption found on cash machines in the area since May 29. At least a dozen ATM skimmers have been found on the North Side since May 1st, according to police data.

Some time back, I grabbed a bite at a cafe near Loyola's downtown campus and paid by cc. They still had the old carbons and when I asked for mine, the server said they were already in the trash. Two weeks later, I get the statement and there's just of $400 worth in two large purchases I didn't make (@Walgreen's and Sportmart). Fortunately, the cc was with my primary bank which I visited directly and they removed the charges without any fuss; didn't hurt that they could see by my account history that I'd NEVER made a cc purchase at either retailer.

Cats Outside?

What is the policy on housecats being allowed loose outdoors? I frequently see one leaving an apartment near my house and it has been “aggressive-defensive” to my dog. Tonight was the most concerning because it sliced at my dogs face unexpectedly from underneath a car.

I dont know exactly know which apartment it comes from and dont plan to go knocking on doors asking who's cat it is. Im just curious if there is a cat “leash law” and who enforces it.

  • I totally understand! I was more responding to the other commenter who said cats who are allowed out are not loved. Obviously I would have to make more decisions if I felt our cat would be mean or distructive in anyway. She is super sweet and I am more concerned...

She is super sweet and I am more concerned someone will catnap her and drive away where she won’t know how to find her way home.

I have never run into issues with cats like you are but hate when people choose to leave their dogs off leash. My dog is very scared and becomes aggressive when a dog, even a friendly one, approaches her. So I get that!

  • Local Yocal Logan Square resident since 2000

I read about the wild cats (mountain lions) that once roamed the area freely, however due to humans moving into the now USA including Chicago. The local governments paid a bounty for each kill until they were gone. I know it's not helpful but wanted to provide a different perspective that maybe humans are far more dangerous than a house cat quietly and happily roaming outside with their caretaker's consent.

he weekend began with seven people shot in just an hour on the South Side. It ended with 10 people shot in two attacks on the West Side.

By Monday morning, at least 56 people had been hit by gunfire in Chicago over the weekend. At least nine of them died, according to data kept by the Tribune.

It was the worst weekend for violence in the city this year. But more troubling, it was close to comparable weekends in 2016 and 2017, when gun violence hit levels not seen in Chicago in more than a decade.

"Most of Chicago celebrated and enjoyed this weekend," Chicago police First Deputy Superintendent Anthony Riccio told reporters, referring to Pride Fest on the North Side and various Father’s Day celebrations. "However, we saw an unacceptable and frustrating level of gun violence in several communities.

“There’s too many illegal guns on the street,” he added, echoing a constant theme of his boss, Superintendent Eddie Johnson. “They’re too easy to get.”

As bad as shootings have been in some parts of the city this year, overall they have been down substantially from the previous two years. But not last weekend, an analysis of Tribune data shows.

At least 59 people were shot in Chicago during the weekend of June 16 last year and again during the weekend of June 17 in 2016.

Weather was no doubt a factor. Temperatures climbed into the middle 90s both days, drawing more people into the street later into the night. According to police, that usually increases the odds of rivals running into each other or arguments escalating into gunfire.

Two of the city's most violent police districts bore the brunt of the weekend gunfire: 10 shot in Harrison, 9 in bordering Ogden, the data show. The next highest was the Near West Side District: 7 shot in two attacks. The Englewood District to the south also recorded 7 shot.

'Unacceptable and frustrating': Chicago sees most violent weekend of the year

Puerto Rican pride on display at 40th annual parade
The city lit up with Puerto Rican pride with parades and cultural celebration in two parts of town Saturday. Division Street in Humboldt Park was lined with Puerto Rican flags and alive with music during the 40th annual Puerto Rican People's Parade.
    http://abc7chicago.com
  • When you say "it was just like last year" do you mean that after the blood was mopped up the police did not noticeably increase their patrols? Or did they increase their patrols and consider your area a hot spot and modify their behavior as a result of the violence and proven threat?

  • I chuckle.

No, it was just the same passive patrolling. I've come to the conclusion the best way to quickly get the police to attend to anything from shootings on down is to have a person in the background of your 911 call yell "Officer down!".

Sadly and cynically you will have ten officers at your door in five minutes when the call was about gang loitering in front of a bodega.

Getting hit by a car is around 100 times worse than a bike. It's false to equate the two like so many here have. Car drivers must burden 100% of responsibility. If you can't drive a car and avoid idiot bikers and pedestrians we would all be safer if you stuck to Uber.

On the contrary, the bicyclist in this example, Bart, did not appear to follow the rules and could have been seriously hurt as a result of his actions. Bart appears to be grossly misguided and misinformed about how to properly ride his bicycle.

Kittyhop - it's a long story what actually happened. I am amazed no one posted about it. The entire block was in our front yard yesterday.

Here is the short version: Minor, drunk, stolen car. It was around 4:30pm and I was watching TV when I heard this loud BOOOOM. I seriously thought the house next door blew up. So I ran outside and saw the car in the yard. Two girls jumped out of the car and ran. Then one of them came back to get the keys. I tried to call the cops, get a picture of them and not loose my calm. Cops showed up, interviewed everyone (at this point the entire neighborhood is on my corner). Then another neighbor showed up and was like " I saw them walking in the alley". So the cops looked at me and were like "you are coming with us to identify them....". So I experienced my first chase. In a police car. Nope, this was never on my bucket list. We finally caught the driver in an alley 3 streets over. By that time 6 cop cars showed up for back up. She was a minor and drunk. All this time I tried to get ahold of my landlords but neither of them answered their phone. Anyhow, the landlord came home right when the tow truck showed up (6pm).

Good thing no one was in the yard or on the sidewalk. This could have ended VERY bad

  • Looked and sounds like a episode of 'Chicago PD"...wow....

(The key thing is the surprise...esp since it was stolen...too much drama for a hot day..but thanks for sharing...)

Any recommendations for tree service?

The city recently cut down the ash tree in front of our house because of ash borer infestation. The tree still looked healthy but I’m no arborist.

Can anyone recommend a tree service to treat our two remaining ash trees?

I spoke with the Bureau of Forestry and was assured that they would not remove these trees if they were recently treated.

  • If the trees are on the parkway - the city does treat them - but it seems it does not help - the city tries to keep them up as long as they are not dangerous....sooner or later they take them down - and replace them later in the year......

Best place to sell appliances,etc?

We've recently (almost!) completed a reno and have a few things to sell that are in good shape/not used (coin op W/D, pedestal sink, light fixture, etc) that seem like things a landlord or builder would be interested in. Is Craigslist still the best place for this type of thing? I have tried the 'marketplace' on Facebook somewhat recently too and didn't have any luck. Are there better apps or sites? I've heard a lot of them people just try to get you down to giving it to them for free on the apps... Thanks!

Is it legal for a scooter with an out of state plate to park on a permit only street?

I have a friend visiting who will be bringing a scooter here. i know you can park scooters on permit only streets without a zone sticker with an IL plate, but does the same apply to out of state plates?

Thanks!

  • You can only park a scoot in permit parking if you have a city of Chicago patking tag. It's a little circle that you put on license plate. City clerk sells them $40 I think

  • The "little circle" is the equivalent of the city sticker on the windshield of a car. It has nothing to do with parking. Motorcycles are exempt from zoned parking restrictions.

Too bad...

Too bad the city will overspend on tax incentives to attract companies but won't pay to bring some worldwide focus...

U.S., Mexico and Canada win joint bid for 2026 World Cup; Chicago won't be a host site
The World Cup is returning to the United States, and this time, Mexico and Canada are along for the wild ride. Chicago, however, will not be among the host cities. A North American joint bid won the rights Wednesday to host the 2026 edition of the celebrated soccer tournament, defeating Morocco and bouncing back from an unfathomable U.S.
    http://www.chicagotribune.com
  • That is true in hosting an entire event...hosting a game or two wouldn't have nearly the same scale of issues.

  • That is also more true when you have to create infrastructure. Chicago would not be creating any transportation or venue infrastructure. If anything it might speed along some backlogged transportation projects.

Sure it'd be overcrowded for a week or so...but I think it'd be worth the visibility and potential investment.

Hi Neighbors,

This post is to notify you all that a steering committee have assembled and filed an application for a Dog Friendly Area (DFA) in Humboldt Park! We have the support of the park manager and the alderman, and there generally seems to be much support from neighbors, but to pull it off we'll need to show a lot of support from dog owners and non-dog owners in the neighborhood.

As some of you may know, we submitted an application at the end of last year, and it came back a few months later, denied not for lack of support or need, but because we simply asked for more land than the parks department maximum allowed for Dog Friendly Areas. With the huge area available in HP we thought it worth trying to break the rule on the premise that it could result in a vaster play area for dogs, and perhaps serve to attract more people to the park from other neighborhoods. We have resubmitted with a smaller designated area (15000 sq. ft.), and are hopeful.

Thanks to the community-minded trailblazers in other neighborhoods, the Parks Department has a fairly comprehensive website on Dog Friendly Areas. See this link:
http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/facilities/dog-friendly-areas/

If you scroll down there is another link after a few paragraphs, to procedures for establishing a Dog Friendly Area. Anyone interested should familiarize themselves with the process but in summary:

STEP 1. Assemble a steering committee
STEP 2. Communicate with appropriate authorities and establish a suitable location
STEP 3. File an application
STEP 4. If approved, petition neighbors for signatures (100 needed from both dog-owners and non-dog owners)
STEP 5. Conduct surveys of proposed area to determine potential impact, 4x over 1 year.
STEP 6. Raise $ and commit to at least 3 years of ongoing management.

We're in step 3 now, and looking for your support! Please reply below if you support having a Dog Friendly Area in Humboldt Park!

Dog Friendly Areas - Facilities | Chicago Park District
    http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com
  • We are there now! Places that have petitions available to sign are Archie’s Iowa Tavern, First Ascent, North Clybourn Group, and Boulevard Sports Lounge.

  • I support a dog park!! And I'm not a dog owner!

Shots fired at Grand and Richmond on 6/3 classified as Vandalism: Criminal Damage to Vehicle.

Again, that is how Chicago kills gun crimes. When you hear the Mayor say gun crimes are down, it is more likely, reporting them is what is down while they are getting higher every day. I have seen videos of MANY shootings lately and police who answered the call did not make a report. In one case in front of my home, a witness who had dash cam video of an entire shooting with vehicle plates was told to go to the station where he lived with a copy! I say, thank the ACLU for that one. A lot of people on EB defend criminals and their criminal activities, very few support the police that place their lives on the line to protect us. Does anyone have a speed heater/silent paint remover they'd be willing to rent?

We're removing tons of paint from our new/old two-flat, and are interested in trying an infrared paint removal system. The reviews seem mixed, so we'd love to try it out before making the purchase. Would anyone in the area have one they'd be willing to rent out for a day or two?

Thanks!

  • How did the speedheater work? Any chance you'd be willing to rent it out? We just bought a bungalow and have quite a bit of paint removal ahead of us and are trying to find the best approach - I found this post while searching to find a local source to rent.

    Thanks!

This has nothing to do with anyone celebrating and everything to do with reckless driving which can be prevented. Fathers Day in Humboldt park, some people will be celebrating and some will be driving recklessly and people WILL be injured. As the link above shows, people have lost their lives and have been crippled for life during these events when reckless driving is done under the excuse of celebrating. This is not hate or racism, it is fact. Please celebrate responsibly this weekend and then everyone can enjoy the weekend in peace.

BOOKKEEPER needed

Hi neighbors-
I am looking for a bookkeeper and a background in real estate would be a bonus. This individual needs to be able to enter receipts/invoices into an exisiting spreadsheet and help organize things between a few properties. This data entry would happen inside my Logan Square home and not an office. I estimate it would take 1-2 weeks initially to catch up and 1-2 days monthly to maintain.

Thanks in advance.

Honda Wheels Stolen

Got my wheels stolen Saturday night (06/09) right behand my house on logan blvd. My 2018 Accord was parked in the alley right behind my house on Logan Boulevard.

Worst thing is that these jerks had to do it on a Saturday, when all dealerships are closed on Sunday, so it just has had to sit there all day yesterday!

It's one thing to be a thief, it's another to be just that inconsiderate!

  • LL

Ooof, I saw the car propped up this weekend. Sorry this happened. It looks like the cameras point right at your spot. Any identifying footage?

  • Tomorrow is another day Happy resident of North Park Village

What a terrible thing to happen! Which block of Logan? You could have had the car taken to a tire dealership, such as Firestone or NTB. They're open on Sundays. Make sure you get wheel locks!

I have some siding peeling away from the side of my home. Any recommendations for siding repair?

  • bump

  • I tried last year to get someone to do repair work on my enclosed porches.. no one seemed interested in doing the job or if they did they wanted to charge a fortune. So I did some research watched some videos and ended up doing it myself...

Looking for someone to do freelance sewing

I have a couple small pet projects that require sewing. I have no skills in this area, but I expect the jobs would only require moderate skill (again, I have none). I would think probably a couple hours of work, I would drop off and pick up all materials. Willing to negotiate price.

If anyone is interested I can discuss specifics over private message (does EB have that?) or email

  • kate www.shopsinkorswim.com

Hi! I am very skilled in sewing. Bags, upholstery and soft goods. Message me if you are still in need. I'm near California and armitage

  • MT

If you have an upholstery project , I would call Jeff at Chicago Upholstery School. He has lots of students, that are talented and would take on projects. I know at least two in the area, but don't have direct contact info.

Why are there choppers over Logan Square this morning?

I can see multiple choppers outside south east of Kedzie and Fullerton. Does anyone know what has happened?

  • CL

I drove past it that morning; it was pretty ugly and lots of blood in at least one of the cars. I hope they are ok. Only one thing that causes that much damage in a car accident between cars — going way too fast.

ISO one time deep-cleaning of very old, small 2 bdrm apt in east logan.

Hello friends! I have been renting this little old 2 bdrm apt at fullerton/rockwell alone for over 6 years and the upkeep has just plain gotten past me. Im simply too busy to deal with the bathroom tiles, baseboards, wall dust, nooks and crannies, etc. No clutter/garbage, just build-up in an old 2nd floor apt building. Looking for recommendations on a one time, affordable, thorough scrubbing during the day- preferably on a weekday afternoon. Note: it will likely take a couple of hours and I will not provide cleaning supplies- this person should bring the industrial stuff, i want the real deal!!! Thanks! :)
