Puerto Rican terrorist tells mainlander Americans to get off the island
Convicted terrorist Oscar Lopez Rivera is at it again, demanding that mainland Americans helping hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico return home. Lopez Rivera, who just celebrated his 75th birthday, leveled the Yankee-go-home rant Sunday in remarks broadcast on the Spanish-language TV station Telemundo. "They should go. Just go. Just go," he said.

if your puerto rican neighbors are upset by the sign, why were you complaining earlier in the thread about the deafening silence of your friends or whatever.

okay, fine, it's a community issue. a large part of the community is puerto rican, and many of those residents seem to have a different opinion than you do. you're not entitled to have it your way.

"thank god." story about dying dad in hospital, tank on e, needs gas, let me take your number and i'll pay you back. blah blah blah. i swiped my card for her on the pump and left. i knew it was probably a scam. thought, if she just charges the 30 bucks she really needs to get somewhere, it's legit. if she fills it up to 60, it's a scam. well, charge card showed 59 bucks. tonight, day after new years day, another woman (different, yet could have been the first one's mom- both were equally frantic and articulate...i admire their rehearsal skills if nothing else)in a suv waves me over (i'm on foot this time, but same gas station at calf and armitage.) "do you speak english -- thank god." same EXACT script. her mother's in northwestern, card is over-extended, blah blah blah. i guess word got around that it worked, so the scammers are working it. so adjust your need to respond (if any) accordingly. (by the way, i gave the second scammer the loose bills in my purse. it's a REALLY cold day, and she took the time to give me an education. that's always appreciated.)

  • If you were to tell the collection agencies/lawyers that this is your number now & to remove you from their call list that usually works. I had a similar situation with a phone number.

  • I keep a VoIP “land line” for unwanted calls. I never answer it unless it’s a known number in the caller ID. Well worth the $10 a month for the Ooma line. This is also the number I use for my primary number with grocery store rewards cards, etc. since I’m sure they sell the info. The scammers can call all they want.

Gunshot at Cortland and Armitage

Does anyone have any info on this? I thought I heard a single gunshot around 5:30pm on 1/9 but second guessed myself and didn’t call the police and now the police have the street cordoned off at Cortland and Albany with detectives looking around. Quite a bit of police activity.

  • E

The article also fails to mention that the victim was a gang member with his own criminal record. While it's great that an offender is off the streets, it doesn't really address the larger issue, which is the gang and other nefarious activities that that store seems to attract.

I've already put in a request to 311 to remove the gang graffiti and trash heap "memorial" from the tree across the street, and if others could do the same, that would be great.

  • What is the exact address...and can we do it ourselves????

Since we got such a positive response with the fence question, I thought I’d ask about waterproofing as well. Has anyone had a great experience with a particular company? I imagine folks close to the River in particular would have some suggestions.

West Humboldt Park gentrification?

At some point recently it seemed that HP was going through a slow process of being gentrified, but now it seems to have come to a standstill. For instance, west of california and north ave appeared to be improving and changing for the better, now it seems to be on hold. Has anyone else noticed this?

  • Djay, U can stay in the neighborhood, just pay the inflated taxes that come with gentrification!!! Or move along, it's that simple!!! Ur not going to stop it!!! It's a snowball in motion that will develop over time into a bigger snowball!!! Look on the bright side of things, aren't...

It's a snowball in motion that will develop over time into a bigger snowball!!! Look on the bright side of things, aren't U happy that because of such gentrification, Ur property either is or will become more valuable?!!! So pay the inflated taxes or take the $ and Run, it's that simple!!! Change is good!!! & this goes for every-one else on this site!!! Ur not stopping it!!! So embrace the future, cause here comes change in a good way for every-one!!! No-one said life is easy or life is fair, but in life, One has to be willing to accept change as it happens!!! Life is short, don't waste it on something that you can not stop!!! So, EMBRACE it!!!

  • Thanks Kevin,
But IMHO the taxes in Chicago aren't inflated because of gentrification, they are huge because of decisions by the only party in town.

There is a reason that property taxes are high in Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Californis but not in Florida, Arizona, Wisconsin, Kansas and the other states.

BTW, the only thing cultural in Djays list is the museum, which is only 5 years old as well.

On Tuesday, January 15, Duffy, woke up unable to walk and in horrible pain. We rushed him to the vet who sent him to a specialist immediately. The specialist ordered an MRI which revealed one ruptured disc and two compromised discs. Because Duffy is still young and has so much heart and love in him, putting him down is not an option. He’s a dearly beloved member of the family. He was rushed into surgery that night.

Now we are drowning in medical bills of over $8,000. He will be re-learning to walk for the next few weeks and will require therapeutic rehab, which will add to the bills. So we are hoping there are some dog lovers out there who will contribute to our fund-raising efforts and help Duffy heal. I know so many people are trying to raise money these days and people have to make choices. But every little bit helps, so If you are able to contribute, thank you.

Here's the link to our fundraising page:

The picture is of Duffy yesterday, the day after surgery. He's pretty sedated. We're bringing him home tonight, and I'm sure he'll be happy to be home. Now the long process of healing and rehab begins.

francis60647-- She put it on a credit card which maxed it out and will be hard to pay off. I'm an older retired woman on a very limited, fixed income. So I can't help with the finances, though I can with the care-taking while she's at work (she teaches special ed in a tough Chicago high school . . . also very stressful).

We don't live extravagantly and don't spend money recklessly. And we don't really expect to fundraise the entire amount. But every little bit of help we can receive is greatly appreciated and helps him get the therapeutic rehab he needs. We've also given to others during their vet bill time of need (at least one of whom posted on Everyblock and we didn't know them). We also have other rescue animals in our home that we care for.

We posted our fundraising link here because there are people who live with animals in this Everyblock community who understand and who help the animal companion community, as we have in the past.

  • Donated. FYI - Vets don't do payment plans, at least none that I've ever heard of in the city. Can you share this with the rescue group she got the dog from, they may be able to help spread it. That is one cute scruffer, good luck!

New aerial surveillance gives police an eye in the sky
There are already surveillance cameras outside homes, businesses and along streets, but a new type of aerial surveillance that's already being used in some U.S. cities could one day be looking at you. The technology comes from cameras mounted on an airplane that flies around cities and records hundreds of hours of video to better fight crime.

Are landlords required to fix cracked windows?

Generally, it is the landlord's responsibility to fix it but can fix it and charge you if it can be proven that you broke it (and the landlord even wants to bother with reimbursement). (I would venture to guess your lease doesn't obligate you to fix such things, especially in an owner occupied.)

Your obligation is to advise your landlord. Email if you have it or call and follow up with a letter. However you do it, let your landlord know ASAP that there's damage so s/he can address it.

Unless it's an emergency situation, I would advocate against doing any handyman fixes yourself. You may cause additional damage or even injury. Let the landlord know so s/he has the chance to fix it or hire someone who can.

I would like to touch base with the owner of a vacant piece of land near our home. Google maps gave me the address for this piece of land, and I found a name associated with ownership for that address via a website that is not an official city of Chicago website.

In looking up the address on the city of Chicago website's tax portal, I can't find the owner's mailing address to reach out to him - or even a pin number for the address (the message I get is, "No records have been found for this property location. Please try again."). I can't even verify the name I have is the accurate name of the land owner.

Has anyone run into a situation like this? Do you have suggestions for how I might touch base with the land owner? The land is NOT city owned, as verified by the Alderman's office. Thanks in advance for any help.

  • You're welcome Krisi! Good luck.

Upgrade water service on rehab

Has anybody been told they need to replace the water pipe from their home to the city service. I was just informed of this requirement and nobody can point me to the actual code reference. Also, drainlayer/contractor pricing is very hard to find. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

  • I too am looking to get a water main line installed at 1.5" in my 3 flat. I need the line from the main to the B-box and the line from the b-box to the house. Water main is on my side of the street thank god. I just called Terry for a Quote and will fill everyone in on his price. I already received a $14k quote from Mario Roque at Escamilla plumbing and a $16,900 quote from Apex Plumbing. Hopefully Terry can come under them all.

well, big, i have lived here, in the same location, for 40+ years.

when i came here logan blvd itself was peaceful (tho Kedzie blvd and Wrihgtwood w of the square were the badlands) - but people who walked even 1 block n or s of logan put their lives on the line because it was a shooting gallery with scumbanger corner boys peddling their poison on street corners and gang signs tagged on the fronts of buildings, and of course up and down the alleys.

with investment, the scum were driven further away (score one for gentrification!) ... but never out. they were always there. they are always there.

so sure, if there's no gunfire outside your front door don't worry about it, big. if armed robberies and armed assaults are not occurring on or around your block then h3ll - don't give it a second thought. and even if they are, big, you are free to ignore them, secure in the solitude of your own home.

the people who post here (and who should also be dialling 911) do not do so to boast. what an insult to them to suggest that is their motivation.

they post here and elsewhere as a Neighborhood Alert to let others know what is happening, where, when, and how often.

my point is that social media postings are not enough. this increasing level of gun violence on OUR streets requires us to take an activist approach to the problem. march. protest. make our voices heard. city hall and CPD HQ respond to that when it's on the 10 o'clock news.

and yes, it is increasing and it is spreading to parts of the community that have been peaceful for 30 years.

    part 2 of 2

there are 2 ways to boil a lobster:

    1) drop a live one into a pot of boiling water. it will thrash around and make a fuss because it knows it is in jeopardy. this is the equivalent of moving to the area around 69th and Paxton or Roosevelt and Sacramento - two particularly lethal locations. from the moment you park there, you know you are in the wrong place if safety is of concern to you. i know this because i have worked those areas - in the middle of the night.

    2) but drop the lobster into a pot of cold water and turn up the heat - it gets cooked without ever knowing what happened. this is the equivalent of living in LS. this is the equivalent of thinking the situation isn't an imminent danger, whatever is going on will go away, and it's not on your doorstep so why should i worry.
so, big, if you want to stick your head in the sand, that's your choice to make.

but i love LS. i care dearly about my neighbors. i know, understand, and have studied crime patterns city-wide for decades. the street shootings in LS have increased over the past 12-18 months. moreso over the past 8 months - just as they have become more brazen. the most recent ones have nothing to do with us - they are warring scumbanger factions and we are just caught in the middle.

    it is a trend.

and since even a handgun bullet can travel through open space for up to a mile - perhaps 1/4 mile in a dense city environment - no one who ever HEARS gunfire should EVER feel safe. if you can HEAR a shot then it CAN reach you.

i want my neighbors to realize that and to start raising holy h3ll NOW before the water in this pot gets any warmer.

and if you don't like what i have to say, just mute me, because i will not stop saying it until people wake up.

Peoples Gas Pricing | Survey

Hey Loganites-

I get a monthly email comparing my gas usage with similar homes to ours. Apparently, we are super inefficient compared to homes of similar size. We live in a north facing, late 19th-century brick cottage home with radiate heat. Most of the home is original, as there is no real insulation between the brick and the original plaster. Windows are fairly new and our house is around 1900 square feet. Our December bill came in around $270.

What are you gas bills? Thanks!

  • nearthehighway Logan Square resident since 2002

you can rent a infrared thermometer with a screen that will show you all the 'cold spots' in your house. Its pretty cool! It becomes very clear where your problems are.

  • I pay to heat 3 residential units (don't ask why) and I am always surprised when I get those usage letters telling me how well (or not) I am doing compared to my neighbors. According to those, I must leave the front door open on one unit and hardly heat the others!!! Neither of which is true so I am also curious as to how they make their comparisons...by the way, I keep my house at 68 in the day and 60 at night.

What if a murder could be predicted? What if police could intervene with the future victim or future killer? In Chicago, an experimental computer program is trying to do just that. It's called predictive policing and the city is counting on it to ease some of the worst gun violence there since the 1990's.

Don't it always seem to go

My business was a 20 year tenant in the building immediately north of the parking lot that was once the Olson Park and Waterfall. At the time of the waterfall that building (2850 N Pulaski designed by Alfred S. Alschuler) was the ILG Electric Ventilating Company of Chicago. It closed in 1990 or 1992. At the same time as the construction of the waterfall and park Mr ILG bought land in NIles in 1934 to create a park for his employees and built the Leaning Tower at 6300 W. Touhy. The family later donated some of the land and the tower to the YMCA. The Y deeded it to the Village of Niles and the Village recently refurbished it. It would be interesting to know if there is any records of interviews with Mr. Olsen and Mr. ILG discussing their two highly unusual public spaces.

I too remember the Olson Rug waterfall. When Marshall Fields took the building over ,they removed it to make a parking lot.

Garbage and Recycling Bins Repeatedly Stolen

Hi neighbors! This is driving me crazy. I live in a building with 3 units and once upon a time we had 3 green garbage bins for our building in the alley. Hi neighbors! This is driving me crazy. I live in a building with 3 units and once upon a time we had 3 green garbage bins for our building in the alley. Soon two had disappeared and we only had one bin for our whole building which obviously filled up quickly. I ordered new ones through the city's website. Right after getting these beautiful, shiny, new bins, one was stolen and another was replaced with a different older bin (our address was clearly marked). Now I have noticed that recycling bins are starting to be stolen throughout our alley -- there's seriously only 2 recycling bins on our whole block now. One day while taking out the trash I witnessed a man on a bicycle stealing a recycle bin and riding off, wheeling it with his bike. He was using it to fill with things from the donation bin in a nearby parking lot...I could see all of this happening. I didn't do anything, but perhaps I should have reported this? I was in a hurry and didn't want to stare at this guy because he didn't look very friendly.

Does the city charge for replacing trash/recycling bins? Should I be ordering new bins or should I report to the landlord? Is this a common problem?! I never had this issue in previous buildings after living in the Logan/Humboldt area for 14 years and am quite steamed!

  • This has happen in my neighborhood Chicago and Ashland. It was so bad people were throwing their garbage in the alley and all the rats came. I saw one on my porch and was trying to eat through my screen. We have called for replacements and they were delivered but they have gone missing again. Our address is on the front.

  • I have heard that thieves use recycling bins to haul their loot. Don't know if that's true in this case.

Maybe the city should install GPS trackers to find out where they're going.

Wilmot Properties currently demolishing 2942 W North Avenue

Residents of the 32nd and 1st ward should be interested in the fact that Wilmot Construction have made multiple large donations to both Alderman Waguespack and Alderman Moreno. This building was a contributing element to Humboldt Park, which is on the National Register of Historic Places the building faces it on North Avenue just east of Humboldt. Hopefully they can preserve the facade at least. https://www.illinoissunshine.org/search/?term=Wilmot%20Construction,%20Inc.&table_name=candidates&table_name=committees&table_name=officers&table_name=receipts&table_name=expenditures

    Search for 'Wilmot Construction, Inc.'
Search for candidates, committees and donors in Illinois
    http://www.illinoissunshine.org
  • Only buildings that are designated as landmarks by the city are protected, and then only the facade.

  • It's gone.

Cop cars at Humboldt and Dickens at 10:45 am.

Does anyone know why there were five police cars at Dickens and Humboldt this morning? I went to pick up one of my client's dogs for their walk at around 10:45. It looked like something was up at the church as they were surrounding and seemingly blocking off the church and the alley behind it.

Strack and Van Til closing Elston location

Strack and Van Til is closing its Chicago Logan Square location by the end of April. Usually my third or fourth choice, but a shame nonetheless. What will replace it I wonder? Ha Trader Joe's?

  • The original plan for Chick Fillet was the old brewery lot next to Home Depot where Value City "furniture" is now. Supposedly Proco Joe didn't like some of the views of their CEO and created a scene for publicity and used his famous third world thug tactics to halt them. The site across from Popeyes is a better location for a drive through so Moreno may have benefited them.

  • Chick-Fil-A and Popeyes are different. Chick Fil A doesn't do proper fried chicken, just cutlets and nuggets. I find them vastly overrated, but to each their own. There are several others in town now as well, so if you really, really want to pwn the libs you can just go downtown and have at it.

The project calls for replacing the two-story...

The project calls for replacing the two-story structure at 2942 W. North Ave., with a six-story building offering 40 apartments, ground-floor retail, 17 underground parking spaces and 23 parking spaces in back. “Why should we demolish an existing building with a great amount of character when there’s vacant land less than a block away?” one preservationist asked.

Humboldt Park historic building to come down, replaced by modern apartments
A century-old brick building just north of Humboldt Park's namesake park will soon be torn down to make way for a modern apartment building. This is unwelcome news to some local preservationists who argue the building that used to be the home of family-owned manufacturer Carbit Paints should be saved.
    https://chicago.suntimes.com

  • CFO

    What a shame. It’s a beautiful building

  • To develop a property of this size, one needs a considerable amount of money. It is easy to say the preservationists should have purchased this. These developers typically don't live in our neighborhoods and their focus is at business instead of the greater good. Ideally it would be great if the neighborhood had more input when an older building like this is on the chopping block.

He finally moved outta state where he had the room for all his junk and no longer needs city property to store it. I have a couple ex boyfriends parents do the same thing. Aquire multiple vehicles junk up their garages think they own the spot in front of their house cuz they pay taxes. Annoying.

Missing Cat

Our backyard cat got into a fight with another feral cat last weekend. She seems like she got injured and has disappeared. We hoped she would come back (she sometimes disappears for a couple of days), but we haven't seen since Sunday. Any news on a sighting is appreciated. She is super friendly (often mistaken as an escaped indoor cat).

Scylla is a female tabby, just about a year and a half old, smallish (but has her winter belly for sure!). She has some orange markings on her back. Please see attached photos. She was last seen around Rockwell/Lyndale on Sunday 1/7.

Thank you for any leads!

Recommendations for replacing building entry doors

Greetings, neighbors-

Asking for recommendations again. Our building's two entry doors are in dire need of replacement. Years of "wear/tear", weather and handling has caught up with these doors and now they are falling apart. I am looking for an expert matter that can replace these and hope it can be replace with auto door closer that will close these doors quietly and prevent these from being slammed. I have a neighbor that releases her frustration on these doors.

Please advise and again thank you all. Your recommendations have been life savers.

  • We went to American Thermal Window Products for our two entry way doors and are very happy with the results. americanthermalwindow.com

  • KPG Logan Square resident since 1987

We also used American thermal for a back door on a crooked porch. Others said they wouldn't or couldn't do it, but American Thermal had no problem and it's been two years now with no problems so far. They are very easy to work with. A little bit pricey, but it was important to get this door secured.

If your doors face south it's best to go with steel doors, if not wood always makes a home or condo building look beautiful.

Anyone know why CPD had Grand Ave shut down between Humboldt Ave and Kedzie last night?

  • My friend was detoured around Kedzie and thought it was something to do with a CTA bus. Never heard anything further.

  • Might have been related to a shooting in the area. At cortland and Albany. They were looking for the suspect and vehicle involved.

The General (2528 N California) closes its doors this weekend

Per The General's website (and elsewhere on social media), they're closing their doors as of Saturday.

Sad to see a place like this go. Also, this makes three empty storefronts in a row on this stretch of California (the old Olympus Laundry, The General, and Anong Thai).

Friends of The General, we want to thank you for supporting us the past two and a half years at our Logan Square home. It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing our last two days of operation will be this Friday and Saturday. Please come out and say goodbye with us one more time @thegenerallogansquare.

High pitched whining noise!? West Humboldt.

Goes on and off all day and night long! Sometime lasts for 25 minutes at a time then off for 30 and then back on for 3 minutes, off for 20 minutes, on for 15 minutes... no exact time pattern but pretty loud (can hear from inside when quiet in house, sleeping). We live on the 1500 Block of Harding Ave. and it sounds like it is near but could be far? Lived here for 3 years and only noticed this last month(ish). Any help in finding and addressing this annoying noise is appreciated. Thanks!!

  • dan yell HP homeowner

Found it. It's coming from the couple year old old folks apartment building on the SE corner of North and Pulaski. The heating units on the roof produce the nose when producing heat. Due to the high pitch frequency and the height of the 'transmitter / heater' it actually gets quieter as you walk closer to the base of the building which make is super deceptive to pin point. Going to try and get in touch with a building supervisor and see what can be done! Will post back.

Called it! Let us know how remediation goes. My neighbor is not interested in looking into his, 'Hmm, I don't hear it'. He owns a machine shop so he's probably half deaf. I talked to my HVAC guy and he says when he installs these, they do not whine like a giant blow dryer although he may be deaf too.

Side note, my neighbor's furnace woke me up at 0220 this morning - at some point I may crack...

Christmas Tree Disposal in Humboldt Park Still Operating?
