Hello,

I am in the market to purchase a home. I was made aware of the enormous amount of construction activity taking place in Logan Square \ East Humboldt Park. We currently reside in a South Loop high-rise condo and are accustomed to living in VERY safe environments. The block I was directed to is 1700 N Albany (Intersecting with Wabansia) all the way to Bloomingdale Ave (606 Trail). I have heard horror stories about the gang activity near and around Humboldt Park and North Ave. but would love to obtain feedback from current residents living in the block or nearby about the current state of safety affairs, neighborhood improvement initiatives, closeness of community etc. My wife, my15 year old son and 18 year old daughter would live there. My son would have to commute back home via the Blue Line occasionally when I am unable to pick him up from the blue line stop ( I work mostly from home) My son goes to Whitney Young HS. He loves to take walks and we would utilize Humboldt Park for our periodic jogs. I have seen some gorgeous new construction homes on that block which indicates great progress and a good future. I am nervous about executing. Would you recommend we live there? I look forward to your feedback! Thank you.

Read his comment again and really give it deep thought and see if you don't come away from it the same way that I have that the comment was sort of a ngative dig at the neighborhood

  • Yeah. I got roped in, but when I saw the responses I realized it’s a troll. Probably some anti gentrification group trying to solicit a bunch of negative feedback. Lesson learned.

It was shipped from Santa Monica, CA, to my address on california ave. in chicago. please let me know if you have seen a package -- or the remains of one (if stolen, it might have been dumped when they saw what was in it) usps tracking says they "left by mailbox" which in my case would have been the sidewalk, instead of leaving it somewhere sensible, like the porch, so it could be anywhere.

  • This gets worse around the holiday season, with more thieves on the lookout for online shoppers and delivery drivers trying to keep a schedule. I came home to my apartment building last year in December and found 6 or 7 packages just left outside the front door on the sidewalk; thankfully I was able to bring them all in before they were taken. Have things shipped to your workplace for the next couple months if you can.

The police took statements but no one saw what happened except after the collision they saw the driver stopped then take off. No driver or car discription was provider either. However, one witness said the man flew up and over loosing his shoes in the process.

It was sad and humbling watching someone die in front of you in the middle of the street.
Call CPD in Lo Squ or Hermosa if you have any details about this accident. I havene't seen the story in any social media or news outlet to date. Sad.

Found Dog (Logan Square, Milwaukee and Talmand)

Found a pup wandering the Chase/Bubbleland parking lot this morning at 10am. He’s about 50lbs, Black/white/grey with white paws. Seems like a shepherd/lab/hound mix. Had a collar but no name/contact.

Let’s find this little buddy his family!

  • Thenk you for taking him in! Any luck finding the owners?

  • let us know if you do find the owners. Those ears look very familar to a dog I see on Dickens/Mozart area.

  • TWP

Thanks, Tim. We took him to Animal Control and they said he had a chip. Still no clear whether they've tracked down the owner, but I'll update when I hear more. Interesting that you've seen a dog so close to where we live.

    Gentrifiers Prefer Blondes
My neighborhood in West L.A. is like a gated community, but without the gates. Single-family residences only; no apartments allowed. No stores or home-run businesses. The homeowners association enforces its rules and regs with an iron fist. Occupancy limits ensure that a hot mess of "huddled-massers" can't move all 300 members of their immediate family into one house.

It might be because you're a real estate specialist you look at things at a different angle. I look at my house as a place where I was raised, raised my children and now my grandchildren see it as “grandma’s house”. Yes, it is an investment that I maintain so that we can enjoy it now. I’m not spending sleepless nights wondering about it’s value in the future. I’m not trying to argumentative, I would just hope people could try to be.....respectful, considerate and empathetic of others.

Bike stolen (Fyxation Eastside champion with stripes)

Hi Neighbors, if you see this bike anywhere, please reach out. I love this bike, and it was stolen while I was getting married, super bogus. I recently replaced the fork, so the front does not have the stripes that the body has, making it unique. It was stolen from our basement laundry room in Logan Square near Unity Park. It has a black rack and a copper bell.

  • Achilles Flaneur ear witness

Very sorry to hear about this and the timing is especially lousy. A number of everyblock neighbors had similar experiences earlier this year in this neighborhood, myself included. We think the thief used a credit card to jimmy the lock as there was no sign of forced entry and we had only a doorknob lock on our exterior basement door.
i wish you luck in finding it and best wishes in your marriage.

Suspicious Activity

Hi all,

I think there is a man casing the homes on the 2900 block of Wisner. He rang my doorbell on Tuesday evening, but had left my porch by the time I came to the door. I saw him pacing in front of my house and talking on his phone. Yesterday he rang again. When I answered the door, he asked me if we have Comcast cable and internet. When I answered “yes,” he said “Then I can’t sell you anything” and left. I didn’t take a good look at him. He was an Asian man with medium to heavy build. He was wearing light colored clothes.

  • Bonnie L. Braverman Logan Square Lover

If you are him again call the police. Don't answer your door unless you know who is behind the closed door. Be very careful and keep us posted.

  • You can also request 'suspicious activity' on you block by calling the police station and police cars will make extra trips down your block. (If you re close to a school, that helps in the call.) Do call because remember 'if it doesn't feel right, than is is mostly likely NOT right.." We watch out for each other..

PRCC CEO JOSE LOPEZ and HP Aldermen got loans from Chicago Gentrification Bank of Clout

Jose Lopez, anti-gentrification kingpin of Humboldt Park, got $680,000 refi loan on his Thomas St two flat in 2015 from tiny Belmont Bank & Trust. Bank of Clout BB&T is run by Chicago zoning lawyer James Banks and specializes in condo loans. Lopez joined political buddies Aldermen Roberto Maldonado and Joe Moreno in getting loan from bank which specializes in funding condo upzones & gentrification for developers represented by Banks zoning law firm who got Pay to Play up zones for teardowns approved by Aldermen like Maldonado & Moreno.

Stray cat problem

I have a stray cat that consistently sits on top of my car parked in my carport. Normally this wouldn't bother me but it's using my hood as a bathroom and a scratch pad. I intend to trap and bring to animal control unless someone has another suggestion.

  • PAWS has traps available. You can put a refundable deposit down and pick up the trap. You can then take the cat (in the trap) to Paws in Little Village for neutering or spaying. The cost is $40. That includes rabies shot, revolution flea and tick as well as a microchp and ear tipping.

  • There is a Facebook group called Chicago Community Cats..lots of very cat savvy on it who deal with strays and ferals.

Gunshots in Logan square?

At about 12:40am early Monday I hear what sounded like gunshots. 1 shot then followed by 7 after. Did anyone else hear this? I call 911 to be on the safe side I told them it sounded like it came from the direction of Diversey and Troy st.

  • bigbadron sorry.

yeah, i'm trying to figure out what exactly happened. we just got back from a vacation and found out our car was hit. judging by the trajectory, it looks like the shots went north from Diversey. our neighbor said the shots were loud enough as if they were in the alley. regardless if the shots were from the alley or Diversey, the CBS story doesn't make sense. so either they messed up the report, or the guy who was shot was lying about what happened.

  • I’m so sorry your car was hit! The story had it wrong - The shots definitely happened on Troy, I think the guys were heading south, two cars shooting at eathother, as cars windows were shot out from the front and back.

Trees damaged at former MegaMall teardown

Antunovich Associates were the developer here, Houston 7979 Parking is listed as the owner. Fences leaning on trees and falling all over, exposed roots on most of the trees on the lot along Linden, lots of garbage piling up and there are now some trees knocked over.

  • I agree it's a mess and the fence should be fixed before the whole place becomes a dump. Those maple trees are not part of the final design so don't get too attached to them.

Dog Owners Be Warned!

Please be aware there is rat poison in front of 2247 N Spaulding. This building is located on Spaulding between Belden and Palmer. The poison is in and around the planter boxes, right next to the sidewalk.

Please be careful and keep your dogs and kids away from this building/area.

We spent all night at the emergency animal hospital because a homeowner chose to be thoughtless and place poison in such a public space.

  • Hi Barbs, If you're responding to Mike’s comment - it’s not rat poison at that address.

  • If you see rat poison, instead of calling the city, just get a broom and sweep it up. It's not that difficult. Don't treat the 311 system like the front desk at your hotel. Just do it.

We tried to have Sparkie come live with us, but she’s afraid of our cats. We are trying to find Sparkie a new home with no dogs where she is the only cat – lizards, fish, and birds probably OK. If you don’t think you can be her new person, please feel free to pass this post to anyone who you think might be interested.

Thank you for being willing to help! Sometimes acclimating a cat to a new home can take a little time and needs to be done in a particular way when there are other resident cats. The new cat needs to be confined to a room where she can assess her new surroundings. Items, e.g., blankets, beds, between resident cats and new cat need to be introduced to the others. After some time and the new cat feels comfortable in "her" room, they can be allowed to see each other from a distance. New cat can be introduced to other parts of the house while the residents are confined, etc. It can be a slower than desired process but it can work out. I'm sharing in the hopes you weren't aware like may people and can then re-try the introduction. Thank you again for your kind-heartedness!

Carla is right, it can often take a ton of patience in bringing in a new animal. I just adopted 2 kittens about 5 weeks ago and it hasn't been easy for me mainly because I, like other humans want things to happen faster than fur creatures actually need. I'm definitely learning patience. I did exactly as Carla says above. It took 10 days to get Sammy kitten to come out from under a dresser in his room. About another week before he was able to leave that room. At least another week before he found his favorite spots to sleep in the house and finally he is playing with the other cats...but, he still runs from me! I've wanted to give up a few dozen times but the two kittens are bonded and at least Sammy is now comfortable with his fur brothers. But gosh, it does take some time. Cats DO adjust in due time. Hoping you give Sparkie more time? Its so hard to find new homes considering there are so so many animals out there needing homes. Best of luck to you!

The biggest & most important change that occurred during this "Great Crime Decline" period was completely overlooked. It was the INTERNET becoming available in every household in every neighborhood, all over the world, during this time.

People living in crime-ridden areas no longer felt isolated nor helpless because INFORMATION was now easily accessible. And KNOWLEDGE is the biggest catalyst for change that there is. All of the programs & organizations mentioned, benefited greatly by becoming part of the "bigger picture" by connecting to many other communities, sharing ideas, feeling empowered & growing as larger, well organized "movements," which grew very quickly.

The INTERNET also changed our surveillance of daily life, with a huge increase in the amount of "reality" that we now were exposed to.
The mobile phone's popularity enabled us now the ability to record life as it was unfolding. These shared videos when put on the internet, expose us all, to all things conceivable, including crime & violence. In a split second, any crime captured on a bystander's mobile phone camera, uploaded onto the "superhighway," could go viral in no time to millions of viewers.
I vigorously applaud the community members, the activists & the dedicated people that are doing such a noble job to bring about great changes by creating a better quality of life for all of us. Thank you!
But the birth of the INTERNET has greatly changed everything... everywhere... and forever.
    Just my opinion.

Orange tabby cat with pink collar and white and grey pendant abandoned.

This yoiubg cat has been wondering around since August. I thought it was owned until recently - I see it running around the alley between Rockwell, Hirsch, Evergreen and WashtanW. I started feeding it and it is super friendly albeit skittish. Does anyone know it’s owner?

  • The cats are owned!! Someone contact me through a neighborhood group. The tags are actually open an animal door when they are close to his home. I am so relieved.

  • Thanks for caring about these cats. It's unfortunate that people are letting their friendly cats outside. I'm not sure if these people are aware, but it is illegal to let your cat roam off your property in Cook County unless it is a feral cat.

Dog Abuse (Dalmatian) by Logan and Western Underpass

African American man with sunglasses and fatigues pulling Dalmatian in a Radio Flyer wagon! He was also carrying a bunch of signs. He was pulling wagon and the dog fell out - poor pup was obviously petrified of him. He picked dog up and then forcefully threw her back in wagon and beat her. I stopped car in middle of western and Logan and told him to stop. He got extremely irate and threatening to me. I had to move car. Please keep an eye out for this pup. Broke my heart that I had to leave her. This is NOT OKAY! What can we do???

    CPLS84,
I misspoke and I do now remember clearly that he called this dog his service dog.

I am in no way suggesting or condoning the people steal his dog.

It would be better if the dog COULD sit on the sidewalk, but he can't; he's all cramped up in a red Radio Flyer wagon. Either way, the guy is somewhat volatile, and the dog does not appear to be comfortable in the situations the guy puts him in. Add on to that that many people have stated he sometimes hits the dog, and something has to be done to help both of them, which is what I said the last time. So don't jump jump all over me.

Surprise Party

All, I'm looking for a good spot to host a surprise party for my girlfriend's 2nd 29th birthday. Does anybody have any good recommendations for places with an event space (hopefully with TVs as there will be at least 1 football game multiple people would like to have on) and possibly deals on drinks and things? Thanks in advance/

  • Whiskey Business, upstairs...

  • Park and field is a good spot. Dedicated party room with a fireplace, full private event menu, plus the ability to go outdoors and use the fire pits

Welding service needed

Hey guys,
I have numerous metal bar stools that have broken welds that need repair. I’ve taken them to a couple shops but no one wants to waste their time on smaller projects or they want a fortune. Looking for a part-timer or a side job who would be interested in fixing them, preferably on site . Please let me know if you know of any metal workers looking for off season winter work .
Thanks

  • I run a small metal fabrication shop and can do this. 773 316 8079, Just west of Logan.

Armitage & Washtenaw Development

Anyone know what kind of project is taking place on the south side of Armitage between Fairfield and Washtenaw? I never knew what the structure was, perhaps an above ground garage for the adjacent condominiums?

  • I live on the block and according to notices we have received, they are constructing a 4 story condo building with retail on the ground floor. I believe it is slated to be 54' tall. It was previously a warehouse.

  • Michael McDonough Resident of BelCragin

It used to be a warehouse for Goya Foods

  • This link will tell you more. It's from two years ago when they first announced the project. The owners hand was finally forced this last summer when a portion of the roof caved in from standing water. The city condemned the building. Given how slow things have been going I wouldn't assume they're going to start building the new structure right away.

This guy was creeping around houses on 3200 block of Evergreen and Hirsch today trying to hop fences and break into houses. Keep an eye out y'all. I hope he gets caught and I hope the police make fun of his dumb outfit.

He was looking straight at me and jerking off. Appalled, I turned and walked the other way. Then I get to my house not even a block away and another different man in a white Nissan sedan is doing the same thing in his car in front of my house not even 5 minutes later. Two different dudes, two different white cars within less than a block away from each other. I did not have my phone on my so I did not call the police to report either incident and I was too grossed out to go back out the car parked in front of my house to get the plate number. If you are in this zone of 60622, perhaps keep an eye out and be safe.

Mute, according to Illinois Statutes and City Ordinance no matter what size of taser it is considered possession of a weapon. But a small pocket size taser or mace would be a misdemeanor. But I don't know any Police Officer that would charge you if you were being attacked and you used it. Mace is sold practically everywhere. You want to get the stream and not the spray. The stream does exactly that. The spray goes all over and could spray an innocent. The stream is like a water hose and goes directly at your target. There is a saying that says it is better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6. The mace sells for about $10 to $15. I don't think you are the kind of person that would be walking down the street and be subject to stop and frisk. It is better to be safe than sorry. If you were my sister I wouldn't hesitate to get her both to protect herself. Stay safe Mute

Alderman Carlos Rosa introduced mega down zone of Milwaukee Ave (Kimball to Central Park) to City Council. Outcry forced belated "forgot to have transparent community meeting" Monday 10/30 6:30pm @ Hairpin Lofts (Milwaukee @ Kimball). Down zone to B2-1 is single family home residential development density. see Zoning chart. 2,500 sq ft of lot required to build each new dwelling unit with Rosa downzone. Some properties have existing zoning B or C dash 3 & higher. Rosa down zone to dash -1 lowest density devalues some long time owners tremendously. Rosa may not be around after 2019 electio; residents and community will be stuck with this for a long time. It's one thing to force developers who seek upzone to get Alderman and community approval, it's another to broad stroke Aldermanic prerogative mega down zone historic higher density business corridor near transit hub to uber low density to control all possible development. Some elderly Polish speaking affected long time property owners dont even know Rosa has done this.

Does anyone know of a reasonable mover for a long distance relocation? There are so many of them...but not with a lot of good reviews.

  • Thank all of you for your suggestions and help!! I was getting so frustrated but this
makes the process seem more sane...

  • My friends used Beacon- which is in the near suburbs -for international move and they were really delighted (of course it cost a fortune but that was because they didn't downsize.) Sorry I can't give you more information.

Everyblock with reporters?

Maybe Everyblock could step into the DNA info void and hire some local reports for its feed. They linked to DNA info all the time anyway.

Anyone from Everyblock listening?

  • The two most active pages:

Logan Square Neighborhood Watch (for crime and other related posts)
Logan Square Community Page (for non-crime related posts)

There are other pages depending on interest (parent groups, school groups, etc) but I don't subscribe to anything but the two I listed above.

  • Thanks.
