outgoing Congressman Luis Gutierrez explores bid for 2020 Presidential Election

Hope this absurd bid gets stopped ASAP. Gutierrez would appoint OLR to a Cabinet post

"A private birthday celebration in honor of U.S. Congressman, Luis Gutiérrez, 4th District, in a Humboldt Park restaurant Friday night revealed more than a great birthday cake.

It was announced, to approximately 100 family and friends at the event, that an exploratory committee will visit 25 cities in six months, testing the waters for a Presidential bid by Gutiérrez for 2020.

Gutierrez recently announced that he will not run for his existing Congressional seat and threw his support behind Jesus "Chuy" Garcia to be his successor."

New aerial surveillance gives police an eye in the sky
There are already surveillance cameras outside homes, businesses and along streets, but a new type of aerial surveillance that's already being used in some U.S. cities could one day be looking at you. The technology comes from cameras mounted on an airplane that flies around cities and records hundreds of hours of video to better fight crime.

West Humboldt Park gentrification?

At some point recently it seemed that HP was going through a slow process of being gentrified, but now it seems to have come to a standstill. For instance, west of california and north ave appeared to be improving and changing for the better, now it seems to be on hold. Has anyone else noticed this?

No one is lying, there are a few PR restaurants on Division. Only one has not flipped owns several times and all the rest went out of business. No customers I guess. There are two Mexican restaurants and one has been closed by the city on code violations for months now, Much more vacant lots, abandoned buildings for decades and buildings for sale or have you not been down Division lately? The puertoriqqueno house has filed for bankruptcy and is going a nasty court battle with it's own members fight to get money owed. The Puerto Rican pride parade is only here every single fathers day weekend is run by a racist and brother of a terrorist. Check this link on racist-http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/November-2014/Jose-Lopez-Humboldt-Park/. Check this link of what happened a few years ago at it-http://abc7chicago.com/news/shooting-after-puerto-rican-peoples-day-parade-caught-on-tape-/796956/
There are a half a dozen PR cultural centers on Division besides the art museum and it gets more to use it by renting it out than visitors looking at the art. The flags where put up by man which means they can be taken down just as easy.
Did you know that China Town was build by Chinese immigrants with their own funds and who love America. This is why it is such a successful community. The flags were built using tax payer funds. A few years ago when they needed maintenance, the PR community was asked to donate the funds needed to do so. This did not happen and Rahm used tax payer funds to do what the PR community would not. Don't believe me, read the plaques at the base of the flags that replaced the one Billy O. had installed when they were built.

  • 1.9 Million to install those Flags over 20 years ago!!! That's alot of $ Now and even more back then!!! $ that could have been better spent on Public Safety or our Failing School System!!! Both of those Flags should have cost no-more than 100k 4 both of them!!! That's...

Free Record Album storage sleeves, inserts, cardboard sleeves

Hey,

Found a stack of nice inner and outer sleeves for records as well as some cardboard sleeves too. Don’t need them and would like to give to someone with a record collection that could use them.

Text me (best) or call (second choice) at 312.493.1333 if you are interested in picking them up. Don’t wait! Text is fine 24/7; call between noon and midnight.

I am just off the corner of North Ave and Kimball Ave in the 1700 block of N Kimball.

Thanks!

They are a small business and very appreciative people...do you want me to e-mail them for you?

  • Thanks Kittyhop! I ended up with a ton of responses, so I’m going in order down the list and am pretty sure they will find a new home.

But I appreciate your advice! I will definitely keep it in mind!

    Predicting crime in Chicago

Hi neighbors! This is driving me crazy. I live in a building with 3 units and once upon a time we had 3 green garbage bins for our building in the alley. Soon two had disappeared and we only had one bin for our whole building which obviously filled up quickly. I ordered new ones through the city's website. Right after getting these beautiful, shiny, new bins, one was stolen and another was replaced with a different older bin (our address was clearly marked). Now I have noticed that recycling bins are starting to be stolen throughout our alley -- there's seriously only 2 recycling bins on our whole block now. One day while taking out the trash I witnessed a man on a bicycle stealing a recycle bin and riding off, wheeling it with his bike. He was using it to fill with things from the donation bin in a nearby parking lot...I could see all of this happening. I didn't do anything, but perhaps I should have reported this? I was in a hurry and didn't want to stare at this guy because he didn't look very friendly.

Does the city charge for replacing trash/recycling bins? Should I be ordering new bins or should I report to the landlord? Is this a common problem?! I never had this issue in previous buildings after living in the Logan/Humboldt area for 14 years and am quite steamed!

  • This has happen in my neighborhood Chicago and Ashland. It was so bad people were throwing their garbage in the alley and all the rats came. I saw one on my porch and was trying to eat through my screen. We have called for replacements and they were delivered but they have gone missing again. Our address is on the front.

  • I have heard that thieves use recycling bins to haul their loot. Don't know if that's true in this case.

Maybe the city should install GPS trackers to find out where they're going.

High pitched whining noise!? West Humboldt.

Goes on and off all day and night long! Sometime lasts for 25 minutes at a time then off for 30 and then back on for 3 minutes, off for 20 minutes, on for 15 minutes... no exact time pattern but pretty loud (can hear from inside when quiet in house, sleeping). We live on the 1500 Block of Harding Ave. and it sounds like it is near but could be far? Lived here for 3 years and only noticed this last month(ish). Any help in finding and addressing this annoying noise is appreciated. Thanks!!

Found it. It's coming from the couple year old old folks apartment building on the SE corner of North and Pulaski. The heating units on the roof produce the nose when producing heat. Due to the high pitch frequency and the height of the 'transmitter / heater' it actually gets quieter as you walk closer to the base of the building which make is super deceptive to pin point. Going to try and get in touch with a building supervisor and see what can be done! Will post back.

Chi techie, that was a good article link on the pension crisis you posted the other day from illinoispolicy.org. Thanks.

Do you or Citizen Pain or anyone else know why there hasn't been more movement to amend the Illinois constitution so the pension protection clause is eliminated? Currently the Dem controlled congress comes up with lukewarm measures that will help the situation some but then the state supreme court strikes them down for being unconstitutional (i.e., "benefits should not be diminished nor impaired"). This cycle has been going on for well over 5 years. I've seen almost nothing as far as getting an amendment written to help our state. I know that process takes years but you need to start sometime and had it been started a few years ago, it would probably now be law and the pension crisis would be greatly lowered. The only thing I can think of is Madigan and his minions are preventing it from going anywhere. Rauner though should be pushing for it. This is just as important as the term limits he was pushing for and Madigan squashed. Until this clause is eliminated, almost any reform will probably be much less than it could be.

From the Chris Kennedy camp:

It’s time for Illinois to face the truth: we have a corrupt property tax racket that thrives because it is making insiders very rich.

When big corporations and the very rich don’t pay their fair share, the burden gets passed to middle class and low-income families. So, beyond its crippling impact on our schools, the property tax racket is crippling the economy and opportunity in the state, and standing in the way of a progressive income tax.

Last week, I called on Joe Berrios, Cook County Assessor, to resign. Because I refuse to stand by and watch as political insiders continue to abuse their power in order to preserve a status quo that only works to enrich the entitled, politically connected few at the expense of the hardworking people of Illinois.

The property tax racket run by Joe Berrios and political insiders needs to end and it needs to end now.

Joe Berrios needs to go. But that’s only the beginning, we need to work to bring a radical change in leadership to Illinois’ state government.

  • "When big corporations and the very rich don’t pay their fair share, the burden gets passed to middle class and low-income families." Also applies on a national level.

I disagree with most of Chris Kennedy's platform, but I think he's spot on with the property tax system corruption. It's unfortunate that the Democratic party seems to have already held a coronation for Pritzker.

  • Mike P, I'm with you on that. What use is it to weed out one when another weed sprouts up; the Kennedy name alone represents dynastic politics--same as Berrios.

"A rising tide lifts all boats" quote that JFK popularized in 1963 is unforgettable. If the new Kennedy came up with something like that and then made it happen well I guess I'd vote for him...next time.

Anybody have the scoop on Toni Berrios whereabouts?

Just wondering if after losing to Guzzardi if she was given a cushy job working with her father in the Assessor's office, along with over a dozen other family members. Anybody know?

I read an interesting political analyst perspective on the Northwest side, including the 26th Ward. It does briefly mention the Aldermanic race that is at the forefront of our minds as election day approaches. Your thoughts?
