Some good alley finds!!

There are some really nice pieces of furniture in the alley between Yates and Oglesby mid 7700 block; dressers with the drawers, a wardrobe, a china cabinet with glass in place and wired for lighting.
They all look like quality older pieces, wood drawers and backs, no MDF. Finishes are rough but this is a good find for a handy person to fix up, use or sell!
Garbage day is tomorrow so move fast!!

  • Mickie53 Be kind, and be generous with your kindness.

Your concerns are probably well founded. While I certainly would never advise anyone to take anything with upholstery or padding, hardwood furniture can be dismantled to clean so I think it’s safe.
As an ER nurse I’ve seen many a bug brought in on patients and we don’t throw out our equipment like gurneys and beds after they are used! Lol! We’d go broke!

  • Shepisces Caring Resident

Lol! I shuddered at "seeing many a bug ON patients!". Nurses desrve so much more recognition! Thank you for all you do. But yes, I can imagine the daily cleaning and sanitizing that takes place. I've gotten an item or two from Craigslist. One being a GORGEOUS white chair with beautiful embroidery fabric. I was able to clean it well, no bugs thank goodness, and its now a staple peice in the living room.

Screening and Community Discussion

Yes, we are doing it again. Based on the feedback from the attendees of the viewing last month. We decided a 2nd showing would bring it full circle. Bring your family and/or neighbors to see this film. The information is mind-boggling.

When it comes to daily headlines, the black middle class is nearly invisible. The news tends to focus on dysfunction in poor black neighborhoods, confrontations with police, disappointing achievements in urban schools. There's a lot missing from that narrative....

When it comes to daily headlines, the black middle class is nearly invisible. The news tends to focus on dysfunction in poor black neighborhoods, confrontations with police, disappointing achievements in urban schools. There's a lot missing from that narrative. To find out more, we talk with journalist Bob Herbert, who wrote and produced the documentary “Against All Odds: The Fight for a Black Middle Class.” He brings decades of reporting and analysis together to explain what African-American families have confronted in pursuing the American Dream.

  • Have lived in S Shore only 14 years now. Always a north sider. “Things” have certainly taken a negative turn, especially after Dominick’s closed. It’s Still home 2 me now, tho. In my mind, Greedy Sandi J had much 2 do with the decline of our neighborhood. Will stay & enjoy my lake view & great neighbors! LOVE the South Shore.....

  • Yes so true I love my Shore Shore too. Born and raised here 48 yrs now. And the best best Beautiful part is our lake front. Me and my friends back in the day use to live at the lake front. With out a care in the world. Didn't have to worry about nothing just enjoy the beach. Oh how I miss those days.

U.S. STEEL LAND DEVELOPEMENT...

...deal off. Irish developers, Emerald Living and Spanish developer, Barcelona Housing systems, has walked away from their proposed development of the lake front site. The group cited land contamination as the reason. This despite the fact that the land was remediated years ago and EPA had given the okay to build housing. Enuf said about that. The real reason this land hasn't been developed is because this site and the neighboring communities has been long treated as the city's step children. Why? I don't know. Some say crime around U.S. Steel is deterring development. It didn't deter development up and down the CHA corridor of State street and Cabrini Green or the on going gentrification of Humboldt and Wicker Park. The real reason, as I see it, is that City has never put its' real thrust and resource toward developing this land and community. So what's up? It's not the location, beautiful lakefront property. It's not the land, EPA deemed site ready to go. Not crime, the State street corridor, Cabrini Green, Wicker and Humboldt Park attest that areas with crime can be developed and crime can be mitigated if not totally eliminated. Could it be leadership? How about it Aldermen, can you supply some answers?
