Fence Builders

Hi Friends! Wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a fence builder? We are looking to build a horizontal fence in backyard as well as our front yard. Any recommendations are appreciated!

  • Our friend was an award winning builder. Several years ago he had 2 clients back out of projects because of bad Angies List reviews. When he looked into it he found several horrible reviews from people he had never heard of. He contacted Angies List and they said they had no way of verifying if reviews were real. He suspected the reviews were initiated by a competitor but could not prove it.

  • I've used Angies List for at least 10 years. I never base my decision on just one or two good or bad reviews. I read ALL the reviews. I look at any pictures posted. There are always some people who are never happy with anything and it is important story...

I've used Angies List for at least 10 years. I never base my decision on just one or two good or bad reviews. I read ALL the reviews. I look at any pictures posted. There are always some people who are never happy with anything and it is important story see what the company does to resolve those issues. I look for someone who's been in business for a while thats licensed and insured if required. I also interview several potentials before I decide to hire. During the interview I ask questions and get a feel for how the company is to work with. Then I decide who to hire. I never take the first person I see on Angies List and I never take the cheapest or the most expensive. I also post reviews and have no problem if a potential customer wants to call me regarding a job someone did on my place.

Water line install pipe replacement Referrals needed

Hello, i'm getting a waterline install quote for a 3 flat in the Northside of Chicago. Looking for economical referrals if anyone has any. I've already gotten pricey quotes from Apex, and Parks Plumbing but am wondering if a smaller company can do better. Thanks everyone.

  • May I ask why the street to house line needs to be replaced? Is it leaking before reaching the house or having low pressure issue? When I replaced the lines in my building we did it from the point where it entering the house to all the fixtures and the boiler room.

  • Mike Goode Owner of Goode Plumbing in Chicago

When you say waterline, are you referring to the water service? This is the line that brings water from the municipal main to your building. If that’s the case, then your choices among plumbing contractors is going to be more limited than for work that does not involve going into the public way, which is required to replace a water service. Depending on the current size and fixture count, you may we’ll need to go into the street, requiring a street opening permit among other things. I’m not certain of the age of your 3 flat, but many older buildings in Chicago have a 1 inch lead (or iron) water service which no longer meets current code. You will need to bring things up to current code once you expose it. We do not do water services yet-it is one of the very few services we do not offer (but are looking to in the not too distant future) but would be happy to refer you to someone. If you are looking for inside plumbing, I’d be happy to give you any advice or take a look at things if you’d like.

My brother went to Gordon Tech in the 1990s and loved the auto and wood shops among other things. It is now called DePaul College Prep. My son is in the 6th grade and we are starting to look at high schools. A couple of items on their website alarmed me. One is that it seems that with the change to DePaul CP, they also did away with all shop classes. While my son wants to go to college, I felt it important that he learn to work with his hands as well. It seems so many people go to college only to come out and struggle to find work. Yet I have a friend who is an electrician and he makes fantastic money, and has always been busy.

The other concern was, is DePaul CP a racist school? I see they have a Black Student Union, but none for whites! I do not want to send my son to a racist school since we are a family that is proud of what God made us (I am white, my wife is Hispanic) so we would not mind him joining a group of others that would share like minded ideas about their culture, as I am sure the Black Student Union does, but to have one and not the other worries me in that, this may be a school that teaches that some races deserve special treatment based solely on the color of their skin. Does anyone have experience with DePaul CP? Many thanks for advise. We have a couple of years, but time passes quickly!

No guilt whatsoever on my part.

Yes these are both true. My electrician friend says that another complaint he has is when his customers go on youtube, assume each job is just like it is on the internet and then question his price, yet are unable to turn a screwdriver on their own. He charges $185 per hour for his labor rate, and even with overhead, that is not a bad living.

Never ending car alarm

Hi folks,

I wanted to know if anyone has experienced a never ending car alarm somewhere on Lawrence between Oakley and Leavitt. Today, I was woken up at 7am by this alarm, it is now 9:30am and it’s still going on. Tuesday afternoon and night it seems the same car had the same issue. The alarm went on till 8pm from the mid afternoon. I called 311 which connected me to the police they said they would bring a car out this was a little before 8am but obviously nothing has happened. Does anyone have any suggestions what to do about this?

  • I called 311 once for a car going off all night. They said the only thing they could do was put a noise violation ticket on it. Which wouldn't help get it turned off obviously. Another time was a neighbor's car that beeped outside my window everytime a car drove...

I called 311 once for a car going off all night. They said the only thing they could do was put a noise violation ticket on it. Which wouldn't help get it turned off obviously. Another time was a neighbor's car that beeped outside my window everytime a car drove down the street. It was going off several times a minute round the clock. I was starting to go crazy after a week of this. I finally put a note on the car explaining the frequency. After the note disappeared so did the sound. I think non nasty notes are the most effective. Unfortunately I don't think you can do anything in the moment because I don't think cops will tow the car. Unless you know how to get into the car and turn it off like that other guy!

Google the battery location of the make and model of the offending car, and use a hammer to put a chisel or long screwdriver through it.

Sidney did not mean that about the hatchet literally. He was using a mixed figure of speech. My unsolicited and maybe impertinent advice to Sidney: Use a smiley face to prove that it's a figure of speech or joke😂😂😂I agree with points made both by Sidney and by JoeFlatwoods. With Sidney I totally agree on his take on modern feudalism. With JoeFlatwoods I agree with the statement implying that some are very comfy pointing fingers, calling others on the way they frame race related language and what not but won't put a foot on Englewood. Would not even stop at a gas station in Decatur. Their lifestyle and behavior contradicts their sanctimonious discourse. Segregation has many sides.

Airplane Noise During Fly Quiet Hours: Are we Still Reporting It ?

So tired, two nights in a row woken up at 4:08 and kept awake til after 5 by loud jets flying over - same volume as during the past two days. I understand the new flight pattern trials are going on but this is too much ! Previous two days it was 11:30 to 12:30 am and starting up at 5 am. Hard to guess when to turn my sound generating machine on as we recently had 4 am theft in area ,don't want to be unaware. Are we still supposed to be reporting jet noise thesame

  • Yes, please do report it. Fly Quiet provisions are not mandates for air traffic, just suggestions. We need to make it clear that the runway rotation and Fly Quiet as it stands are not enough to mitigate noise.

  • Thank you for posting about this, Alice. The same thing happened to me and unfortunately I just cannot sleep with anything that blocks out normal sound. I'm an early riser but 4 AM is too early.

  • Report at www.chicagonoisecomplaint.com or call 311. . Heading toward 5 million noise complaints in 2017. let each of your elected officials know they need to work on controlling the O'Hare aircraft noise and air pollution problem.

Parent-Child Class?

Just moved to this neighborhood. Want to check out a Montessori school for my 14 month old daughter. Three blocks from where we live, there is a school called Montessori Gifted Prep. We toured there, but they are full. Thinking about to trying their Parent-Child class on Jan. 25 Anyone want to join together?

  • DQ

Thank you all for the recommendations. I will definitely check out other options in the neighborhood, I won't go so far like O'hare unfortunately. I was just so amazed by how well children at Montessori Gifted Prep spoke both Spanish and Mandarin at this early age when I toured there.

North Park is not a Montessori school, but they do incorporate Montessori principles for primary grades. https://www.npeschool.org/

Keep in mind that not all children do well in that environment; ours did much better in a highly structured, competitive program

Prepay your Property Taxes for 2017 Tax Deduction

You may want to pay the 1st installment of your property tax bill before the end of the year for a deduction on your 2017 federal taxes. You may not be able to utilize the deduction in 2018.

With the likely passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, it is estimated that the majority of taxpayers who currently itemize their deductions will take the standard deduction for the tax year 2018. Did you forget your scooter?

Hey neighbors! As of 6am this morning, Leland (west of Western) is being repaved. There's a sad, lonely, little black scooter that was left on the street between Western and Artesian. Sadly, he was lying on the street last night as it appeared someone backed into him and took off. The construction workers were kind enough to pick up the sad scooter and move him onto the sidewalk this morning, and now it appears someone moved him off the sidewalk. Just wanted to see if the owner wanted to put him somewhere safer... With all the 'No Parking' signs constantly going up, who can keep track?!

- All black, short hair

We’ve seen posts about similar thefts in the neighborhood during the last few days and we wanted to make folks aware of this incident as well. We’ve filed a police report with 311. Now on the hunt for a shop to get the catalytic converter replaced. Any recommendations are appreciated.
