What can we middle age Chicagoans do to promote some positive soulful popular music such was the norm in the 1970s with music like Motown, R&B, Soul, Chicago Blues. I even liked a lot of Disco like Donna Summers and I sadly note that today's youth music is not in any way couples' dance music. When did it become reality that American youth, including Black African American youth doesn't know how to dance? I did hear that there is a small "step dancing" community, I hope it includes some young people. When is this terrible rap music plague going to finally end? It's gone on longer than the Bubonic Plague Black Death lasted in Europe!

Thank you @Zan and others for shedding the truth on the matter. If I had been the original poster, I would have at least done some cursory research on Google before displaying such ignorance on a public forum. That way the poster would have known Chance is not a "gangster rapper" and if s/he had gone past page one of the search results they would know rap/hip hop culture is complex and varied and so-called gangster rap is one small part of it. Also, the idea that he should dress differently or use his given name in order to speak up for what's going on in his community just smacks of classism. On one hand the poster wants to condemn an entire genre of music s/he clearly knows nothing about for "promoting violence" but then he wants to sit on his computer and criticize a rapper who's trying to have a dialogue with community leaders about education. He could be partying in Ibiza or polishing his Grammy, but he chose to try and make his community better for average citizens. I don't see the Taylor Swifts or Justin Biebers of the world doing anything close.

What's needed here is some Chicago music visionary like Detroit "Motown's" greatest ever music visionary Barry Gordy.

Barry Gordy envisioned a Black AA form of popular music that would appeal to all Americans - that would be authentic, Black AA soulful music, but also have great crossover appeal to middle Americans - something that wasn't "good 2shoes" syrupy but also wasn't vulgar or promoted criminality.

Barry Gordy and Motown had "finishing schools" that would teach talented young artists how to dress better, social manners that sort of thing.

And Barry Gordy hired talented musicians - ie real musicians that played real instruments that performed class lyrics with chorus - songs were about every day life, love, romance but also had some serious urban themes - like in the Temptations "Run away Child Runner wild", "Poppa Was a Rolling Stone".

Why can't some similar Chicago based music visionary do something similar with the likes of "Chance the Rapper"? Maybe clean him up a bit, teach him how to dress in a hip but fashionable manner - get some back up musicians that play real instruments, hire some song writers like former Commodore singer/song writer - Lionel Ritchie.

Do people here know that the great Lionel Ritchie has been forced to write Country Music songs these last 20 years?! That's how bad the Black AA popular music scene has deteriorated.

    "Bad" does not mean "Good".

Carpet & Upholstery - Great Job!

Yesterday in preparation for the Holidays we had our carpet cleaned by Double A Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning. He did an excellent job without the truck, hoses, water and mess that we have experienced with other Carpet Cleaners. The icing on this cake was that the carpet dried in 2 hours, is clean and fresh with all natural products and amazingly reasonable. This is a family owned business and the owner Darrell is a local resident. His # is 773-895-9424.

  • Thanks Ruby! That's great info. Will pass it on.

  • We just had ours cleaned by New Dawn Carpet Cleaning. They also took care of our delicate Persian area rug and my sofas in the man cave. They were reasonably priced and the best part of all much like your experience it dried fast. I don't have their number but their website is www.NewDawnCarpetCleaning.com They have a coupon for new customers so don't forget to click and print that to save some money :)

Cautionary Tales of City Life by Chicago Painter Bill Walker

He was the driving force behind the historic mural, the Wall of Respect, which debuted in 1967 at 43rd Street and Langley Avenue.

Cautionary Tales of City Life by Chicago Painter Bill Walker
A new exhibition looks at rare works of art that are powerful and sometimes graphic. The historic work was made by an artist with a strong connection to Chicago public art. Bill Walker was a muralist on a mission to display beauty and culture, but he also reflected on the harsh realities of life on the streets.

Fall Lawn and Garden Clean-ups and Snow Removal

Dear Neighbors:

My husband scheduled Panama yesterday. Although summer and fall weather was beautiful, it’s time to clean out gardens/side lots, trim the bushes back and aerate the lawns in preparation for winter. For years we have used Panama Maintenance 773-967-8343 because they are in our community all the time, they’re honest and do a great job at a fair price. Panama also does snow removal in the winter. Call Panama to get on his schedule early for fall cleanups, snow removal and other services.

  • Ruby in Bronzeville Engaged neighborhood advocate

E.J., Panama is black and a black owned locally run business. You may see his white truck, trailers and equipment all over the Southside of town.

Leonard, for handyman services we use Shelley Odell 773.407.2346 he is honest, competent, fair and reliable. He lives in the community and is also black.

  • Leonard2003 kyria

For the record, I am Happy to have good and honest people working at my house regardless of ethnicity or background . It's hard to find that in my experience.
