Needed: 1-2 wide-mouthed mason jars

Dear neighbors, I am looking for 1-2 *wide-mouthed* one-pint mason jars with lids for a project. I can trade you normal mason jars if you like. Thanks!

  • Hey Stephanie, they sell them at some Target stores; I saw them on the Target website. I think they are sold by the dozen, which might be more than you need, but they're useful for a lot of things.

City crews to combat mosquitoes this week in West Ridge

Crews working with the Chicago Department of Public Health this week will be dropping “larvicide” in catch basins in the West Ridge community (located west of Ridge Blvd.). This annual activity is done to decrease the number of mosquitoes that can transmit the West Nile virus.

Catch basin treatment in West Ridge will take about one week to complete. No spraying will take place at this time.

The Rogers Park community (located east of Ridge Blvd.) is NOT being treated because mosquitoes that carry the West Nile virus are not present close to Lake Michigan.

For more information on this effort, visit:

Worst case scenarios: What if someone has a heart attack while stuck alone in an elevator for a long time? What if someone has a seizure and needs immediate medical attention? What if a pregnant woman is ready to give birth and no one is there to assist? Well, I could go on and on.

Among other things lacking in our society, I believe, is the lack of compassion for others. A lack of the milk of human kindness, if you will. Is our president a role model?

Lost Golden Lab/Retriever

I met a woman last night who was looking for a friend's lost dog. I can't remember exactly whether she said it was a golden lab or a golden retriever. A large dog in any case. Has anyone seen this lost dog? I hope she has found her dog, but if not, the dog went missing at Albion and Bosworth. Unfortunately, I have forgotten the owner's exact address. It would be easy to locate the owner by knocking on a few doors. Or, if you have spotted the dog, feel free to message me.

Cedar siding contractor needed for exterior work

I own an old Victorian in the neighborhood (Rogers Park) that needs cedar shake shingle replacement on the 2nd story exterior. It also needs some light carpentry work in the process, trim replacement. It also has a turret.
I need a good reliable contractor who does shake shingle siding work, not faux vinyl panels, but actual shake shingle siding. Recommendations with references are appreciated.
Thanks!

  • I had similar work done on my home. I hired Agustin Rojas Roofing and they did a fantastic job. You can reach him at 773-425-7631.

Chicago Math and Science Academy earns top honors from U.S. News as #1 ranked charter school

In addition, CMSA was one of only 115 high schools schools in Illinois to receive U.S. News & World Reports’ coveted Bronze Medal, which is awarded to “high-performing schools based on state exam performance.”

CMSA’s rankings are all the more impressive given that its students do not come from privileged backgrounds.

Ninety-eight percent of CMSA students are non-white and 95% qualify for free or reduced lunch, which means they come from families with incomes at or below 185% of the poverty income threshold. The vast majority of the students come from Rogers Park families where neither parent attended college.

I agree Live. The concern is regarding the ones that are not doing a good job and are public charter schools. It's important that all schools in Chicago do an excellent job, which will keep families here vs. moving to the suburbs in order for their children to receive better a education. That benefits both the students and our city. Select schools are difficult to get into, even for excellent students - I know, we tried to get our son into Lane... but so many applied, I believe less than 25% actually made it and the percentage could be less.

The goal should be to raise the bar and bring all Chicago public schools up to the select level.

One problem we face is that children in he poorer neighborhoods or even many of the better areas of the city, do not get the support they need from their parents, which is unfortunate and I certainly don't know how to fix that, yet I recognize it's broken.

As previously stated, my son went to Rickover Naval Academy, which is a Chicago Public School, not a select, magnet or charter school... and one of the primary benefits of going there was the support given to them by the US Navy personnel onsite as well as additional money from the Navy to support their education, which was disciplined, yet not as military as one might think.

Although Chicago public schools and public charter schools are allowed to stand side by side, there exist under performing charter schools, and they should be closed and the students and the money that goes along with each one of them, should be put into the Chicago public school.

CMAS is example of a great public charter school, while there are others that are only in it for the money and generate under performing students.

  • robin in WRP I support a 28th Amendment 4Free & Fair Elections!

Charter schools can hire non-qualified teachers. On average, charters do not out-perform "regular" public schools.
What we need is a way to replicate the quality of resources at high performing schools (both neighborhood and selective enrollment) across CPS

Can anyone recommend a good exterminator to get rid of mice?

Thanks

Cats are amazing little exterminators for all sorts of pests!! We used to have a cockroach problem in our apartment building, even with monthly exterminator treatments... but since we adopted two cats last year we haven't seen a single bug in our unit :)

But yes, obviously don't get a cat if you don't want a cat.

I did not know any of them,
I just walked towards them,I was so relieved to see these people.
Then the guy who was following me, stop an stood
    There on the corner,
I look back at him an he
    Was looking dead at me.
Then I walk away from the
car in went into my building.
But I did not go to my
entrance, because I did not want him to know where I
Iived. He had the nerve to
    Just stand there an watch
    me, he would’nt dare come
    across the street.
I had turn away from his stare,
an when I look again, he
    had vanished.
    It creeped me out.

Anyone know about car smashing and police on Farwell?

A car crashed into a parked car by Farwell and Wayne a few minutes ago. Lots of emergency vehicles. Anyone know more?

Another quiet night up here north of Howard

  • Apparently cops were chasing a car and several cars were smashed up on Farwell between Glenwood and Sheridan. No word on who fired shots and whether they hit anyone. (When I lived north of Howard last year, I heard a young man get shot in the head while I was having breakfast. Besides the point in this thread, however, which is about a specific occurrence and not a survey of bragging points.)

  • I once received a ticket on Foster between Clark and Ashland for not paying meter in a space that was one car length long and between bus stop sign and pay to park sign. I contested in person with photos of spot. It got dismissed but the hearing officer said it was actually a bus stop according to the addresses but sign was placed wrong. I asked him how in the world is person would know this because we don’t have access to the database. He had no answer.

Taking our budget back...one sign at a time

Our fellow everyblock Rogers park neighbors have pointed out the the pavement markings and signage indicating end of block no parking are unnecessary. People should just know it's illegal and we can save the money by not maintaining these indicators. Join us in helping remove these from the neighborhood as they are wasting unnecessary moneys that could fund things like basketball hoops for the kids.
please help identify unnecessary signs around rogers park and post them so we can create a list.

The Assessor’s office last week mailed notices of the assessments to every property owner in Rogers Park. On average, Rogers Park home owners were hit with a 19.2% increase in the assessed value of their home. Some, of course, were hit with an even greater percentage increase.

Though it's a sign of an improving neighborhood, this significant increase in the assessed value of our property undoubtedly will result in an increase in our property taxes.

You should not pay more than you are legally required to pay. If you believe your property assessment is improper, you have a right to appeal that assessment.

Come to the meeting tonight to find out how.

  • Beezil perfectly summed it up!

Good Neighbor - Summed up what? That some folks don't know the difference between a tax rate and a property assessment?

Join me in opposing the closure of the Belmont and Western courthouse

I urge you to join me in opposition to the planned closure of the branch courthouse, located at 2452 W. Belmont (at Western).

The courtrooms at the Belmont and Western courthouse hear preliminary felony and misdemeanor cases for Chicago’s north side neighborhoods, including Rogers Park. Under the proposal, most of the cases heard at Belmont and Western would be shifted to the courthouse at Harrison and Kedzie and a few might be heard at the Skokie courthouse on Old Orchard Road.

To learn how you can help me in opposing this misguided plan, visit:

Amazing! In the span of less than two days, we went from winter to summer temperatures in the 80s! The National Weather Service predicts it will cool down this Saturday to a perfect spring day with sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 50s.

I can’t think of a better way to spend a spring morning than to join your neighbors in beautifying the neighborhood!

We’ll meet at 9:00 a.m. for coffee and rolls at the 49th Ward Service Office, 7356 N. Greenview (at Jarvis) and head out into the neighborhood for some sprucing up.

We’ll return to the office at lunchtime for a fabulous “Taste of the 49th Ward,” featuring food from around the world donated by a vast array of 49th Ward restaurants and guaranteed to satisfy every culinary taste.

I hope you can join us!

Riding to the top of the Red Line is worth it for these must-see spots

Here you will find countless types of cuisine, theatre and shopping, and a community that looks out for one another. And on Howard near Paulina you'll find Sol Café, a spot designed to grab and go — or sit for hours on end.

Walk off any decadent calories inside the century-old Bishop building at the corner of Howard and Rogers, and inside Lost Eras, which in its 40 years in the neighborhood has acquired thousands of square feet of costumes and antiquities, including seemingly anything unusual or obscure.

Riding to the top of the Red Line is worth it for these must-see spots
While the Red Line carries more riders than any other, many commuters don't know about the fantastic places found blocks away from its stops. So WGN's Amy Rutledge is Riding the Red Line from Rogers Park to 95th St.

Charter schools choose dehumanizing disciplinary measures.

Wiil RP charters adopt the same life threatening rules?

A network of Chicago charter schools has policies so strict that some menstruating girls are bleeding through their pants for lack of permitted bathroom breaks.

In early April, NPR Illinois outlined the “dehumanizing” disciplinary practices at the Noble Network of Charter Schools. Teachers and students subsequently reported other practices, including strictly limited bathroom visits.

  • This posting is not only embellished and misleading but, when compared to the original NPR Illinois article by Dusty Rhodes, presents fake comments as fact. For example, the original article makes no mention of a "lack of permitted bathroom breaks". This posting also fails mentioning that NRP received information that parts of the story were “exaggerated or plainly false” and that at least two principals sent messages encouraging teachers to ignore the piece. Was this posting intended to inform or to inflame?

FOUND: Set of Keys on Red line at Howard - April 30

I found a large set of keys on a Red Line train at Howard station this evening, Monday, April 30 at around 7:00pm. 7-Eleven and Marino's rewards cards, and a distinct leather key strap. Message and I will try to get them back to you.

  • robin in WRP I support a 28th Amendment 4Free & Fair Elections!

If the Mariano's card is registered on the website, they can find the owner. Otherwise, I would give them to the CTA

  • soder606 Mother, Grandmother, Cook, Reader, Liberal

Yes, turn them in to the CTA. The Red Line has a lost and found at the Howard station. I lost a car key on the train. Some angel found it and turned it in. I was able to retrieve it at the lost and found.
