    Reid Hyman;
I assure you that I have attended a half dozen PB meetings. My two suggestions were rejected as non qualifying. I have not sat on a committee to develop a project. One of my suggestions, video surveillance at the remote Red Line entry on Lunt, was later implemented by the CTA and eventually assisted in isolating a rapist. I am aware that Joe deserves a great deal of the credit as a pioneer in PB as an outreach tool to provoke community involvement, but he has never made secret that it is modeled after similar referendum type elections in foreign countries. In conjunction, he is abridging the use of the community's tax dollars by allowing aliens and non qualifying minors to vote in "his non binding elections."

In terms of crime, I expect the Alderman to take a much harsher stance against the criminals who commit violent acts.Gang assembly on public ways, gang graffiti, drug trafficking, prostitution, vandalism, and curfew violation should not be tolerated. Dysfunction such as addiction and homelessness should not be tolerated, and chronic these individuals should be institutionalized for assistance. Parents and offending juveniles of minority age should both be held responsible for criminal acts committed by juveniles, and we should be seeking the court's support in mandating satisfactory family counseling and treatment. Further, in cases of violent offenders or chronic problem areas, I do expect the Alderman and his staff to act as court advocates on behalf of the community in substantially more criminal cases than they appear to be .participating in that capacity at this time. I find it ironic that the Alderman himself openly admits responsibility to represent the community in criminal matters, yet his supporters here constantly deny that responsibility despite his admission,

You want the Alderman to sit in the courtroom audience all day to passively influence a judge's decision?

    Sounds very efficacious. <sarcasm>

We learned from Jawanza Malone of Kenwood Oakland Community Organization and the Obama Library CBA coalition about why CBA's are a growing movement in Chicago and around the country!

Regarding your question "What is your plan to stop welfare for those that can work and what is your plan to improve retail choices for those that work.", Are you referring specifically to the Caroline Hedger Apartments seniors, who many of which are disabled and have an eligibility requirement of being 62 years of age and older to live there?

Carjacking and murder charges have been filed against a Wisconsin man who was in a stolen vehicle during a crash that killed his alleged accomplice Wednesday morning on the South Side.

Deangelo M. Williams, 21, was charged with one felony count of aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm, one felony count of robbery armed with a firearm and two felony counts of murder while committing another forcible felony, according to a statement from Chicago Police.

Williams and a 19-year-old man were wearing masks when they carjacked a male at gunpoint at 9:48 a.m. Wednesday as the victim was getting out of his vehicle in the 1000 block of West 61st Street, police said.

They drove off in the stolen vehicle with police pursuing them, police said. The stolen vehicle crashed less than 10 minutes later in the 4900 block of West Wentworth.

The 19-year-old man driving the stolen vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene...
Why do we point this out?
We were told in roll call in 007 that the surviving offender was charged with murder approved by the ASA only later the great office of Kim Foxxx denied the charges. Then the Chief of Detectives over turned them and charged him with murder again. You can only guess what's going to happen in court. Ridiculous.

This has nothing to do with affluence

  • This individual case does not have anything to do with affluence , or a converse lack of wealth., jurisprudence has been distorted by affluence for eons. Now, at the other end of the spectrum, we are being seeing a model of jurisprudence also being abridged by indigence.

Neighbor leaving food for animals

I have a neighbor who keeps dumping food (bread, kibble) in the alley behind our building. I have asked her about this and she says she's "feeding the birds". However, we have a problem with racoons and rats and I'm afraid she's only helping to attract them. I have seen racoons, squirrels and rats go at the pile she leaves, but no birds. I know that other folks in our building have asked her to stop & she just doesn't get why. I'm wondering, I know there are laws against feeding wild animals in other cities - but does Chicago have one?

  • JMG

Please be considerate and think of your neighbors!!!!

rice and breadcrumbs result in disgusting bland meat. If you feed squab nuts the flavor is more favorable but even regular bird seed is better.

  • To Live From Rogers Park I heard that is a myth that birds blow up from rice.

The development is allowed under the property’s current RT4 zoning designation. No zoning change, variance or special use permit is required.

I asked the developers to present their plans to the community as a courtesy, given that the development will represent a significant change to the property in question.

On Wednesday November 8th, Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce President, Bill Morton, traveled to the Back of the Yards neighborhood to meet with the Midwest Workers Association at their headquarters to find a solution to poverty in the Rogers Park neighborhood.

The Midwest Workers Association is a free and voluntary unincorporated membership association which services workers, temporary workers and other low-paid workers and their families. The organization’s mission is to alleviate our member’s most important-poverty- at the root.

“We will participate with the Midwest Workers Association at future Illinois Commerce Commission meetings to fight for keeping utilities affordable for residences because nobody should live without heat in the winter time” said Bill Morton, president of the Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce.

The actions that Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce will take to support Midwest Workers Association are distributing the Association’s postcards, inviting them to speaking engagements in Rogers Park, and offering outreach table opportunities at our local stores.

The Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce spent a busy day last Thursday, November 16, 2017, at Northeastern Illinois University NEIU.

The Chamber participated in the College of Business and Management Career Fair. Chamber President Bill Morton and interns, Emilia Jamarillo and Trudy Leong, greeted and discussed Chamber internship business, social media, and legal opportunities with many of the 1,000 students majoring in Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Management and Business Administration.

After the Career Fair, Biil Morton and Trudy volunteered with the University Honors Program at the North Park Village Senior Apartments at 5801 N. Pulaski Rd. to help at the Apartments' annual Thanksgiving dinner for the residents.

UHP Director Dr. Jon Hageman sent out a last-minute call to UHP students for help and eloquently stated the need.

"Many of the residents are alone and have no family in the area (or at all)--the holidays are times when those residents are particularly alone, and even something small like a meal served by a smiling face lets them know they matter—it gives them a sense of worth and human dignity that is otherwise lacking, or in very short supply.

For me, it’s easy to see work and other things as overwhelming. Taking a couple of hours to serve others whose lives are in many ways much more difficult than mine helps me keep things in perspective. I have seen how a small amount of time on my part can make a big difference in the life of someone who otherwise feels abandoned. Ultimately, we all depend on help from others, and it’s important to repay that in some way."

Chamber President Bill Morton appreciates giving back and providing interns with a well-rounded internship experience, which includes Chamber volunteer work.

Mr. Morton looks forward to Chamber involvement in future university career fairs and supporting his interns' volunteer opportunities. Trudy is an NEIU student and enrolled in the University Honors Program.

  • Didn't the University actually provide the food? You helped spoon it out and got a free meal in exchange. Isn't that correct? And didn't Bill Morton also get a free meal because he was with you? Didn't both of you get a free meal for spooning out food that the University paid for? Is Bill Morton doing some fluffing here?

  • Trudy Leong Student Trustee, Northeastern Illinois University

North Park Village Senior Apartments provided the food and asked the University Honors Program to serve the seniors. Volunteers having a meal with the residents help instill community presence with the residents. The UHP Director, the students, and Bill Morton were the only volunteers at the dinner.

North Park Village Senior Apartments wanted the UHP volunteers to help reduce the residents' sense of isolation from the community if no one else except the residents themselves attended the Thanksgiving meal.

Broadway Bank space

It looks like something is moving into the Broadway Bank building. Does anyone know what’s happening there?

  • I think that event space that wanted to go in on Ridge Avenue and was turned away by the area residents is opening up shop there. I could be wrong but that's my guess.

  • If you look at the posts on their Facebook page (linked above), they seem to have been working on turning the bank building into an event space since the end of 2015 (nearly two years), so it is not likely related to the event space on Ridge.

New Public Art Gallery & Venue on Granville Avenue and Winthrop

It's really cool to see that someone who has the means, support a neighborhood they believe so much in versus hoarding their cash or investing it elsewhere. Not sure if others heard about the new venue that Rae Ann and her husband developed and instituted in the neighborhood recently.

Hi all,

My cat (the one in my profile photo) has been peeing on my low pile carpet and the staining is present on the reverse/bottom side. The carpet is 6ft by 5ft 9in. I'm not sure of the material, but I'm guessing synthetic. I'm a renter, but the carpet was bought by the previous tenant, so it's technically mine. I'd rather get the carpet professionally cleaned than have to buy a new one. I don't care if the color changes, I just need a way to protect the wood floors and get the odor removed. I've already tried cleaning it by hand, but given the heavy staining on the reverse/bottom size, I'm concerned it'll eventually disintegrate and maybe stain the wood flooring.

Can someone please recommend an inexpensive place to get my small low pile carpet professionally cleaned in Edgewater? Can I take it to a regular dry cleaner or no? This is my first time having to do this.

Thanks!

(My cat is medically fine. He's recently been to the vet.)

My initial post was over a year ago. I resolved the issue then.

In case someone else runs into the same problem, this is how I successfully dealt with it.

    1) My cat had recently been to the vet who said he was medically healthy.
    2) I got a spray bottle of "Nature's Miracle 3in1" and heavily sprayed the carpet, following the directions on the bottle.
    3) I got a very large clear thick painter's tarp and folded it up to fit the carpet. I then duct taped it to the underside of the carpet to prevent any moisture from going through the carpet.
    4) I moved my furniture around, so that the spot my cat was peeing in would be blocked, in case his scent was still there. The areas around the litterbox are now also blocked, so none of the wood floor is exposed. (The litterbox is wedged in a corner with an additional tray to catch kitty litter as he exits the litterbox.)
    5) I also created additional barriers to keep my dog from getting to the litter boxes around my apt. I'm guessing that my dog's litterbox intrusions are what caused the problems in the first place. As disgusting as it is, it's common for dogs to want to eat cat feces. One theory is that cats pass a lot of protein into their feces, and that's why dogs want to eat them. Dogs are scavengers. And yes, my dog regularly goes to the vet for his annual exam and shots and is medically healthy.

  • Get a pheremone spray. Our cat did this a few times on our door frame when he got a whiff of another cat next door. We sprayed this stuff on the doorframe called No Mark that I got at Pet Co next to Jewel and it works SO WELL. He is like an entirely different cat now. It relaxes them and takes away their urge to spray and go outside the box.

Everyone had a free taste of Tequila Cazadores inspired tacos. This was a complement to our neighborhood restaurants, not competition. This celebrity event brought visitors to Rogers Park, who patronized both Empirical Brewery and Mayne Stage. This was not your regular for-profit, food truck, taking dollars back to where they came from, instead of being cycled throughout our community again.

It is good to have philanthropists visit the neighborhood. What I especially enjoy about Chef Aaron Sanchez, is that he launched the Aarón Sánchez Scholarship Fund, an initiative empowering aspiring chefs from the Latin community to follow their dreams and attend culinary school.

Every year hundreds of filmmakers, agents, producers and industry players from Chicago, New York and LA join the Chicago Comedy Film Festival.

I attended the Q&A with the directors of the short comedy film "With Great Purpose." On the Q&A they shared some of their experiences doing this film, and what inspired them to create this film

Later I went with Bill Morton, president of the chamber, to a meet and greet with the movie makers where the red carpet was sponsored by Lagunitas. It was fun to be there and be able to talk to some of them.

Will Binny's be a short drive away?

Some of us, especially those on the north end of RP, have been missing Evanston's Whole Foods South store since it closed in March. Binny's is interested in the site. Wonder what the neighbors up there will think of that.

Binny's Proposed For Former Whole Foods Site
EVANSTON, IL - A libational replacement for the shuttered Whole Foods store at 1111 Chicago Ave. in Evanston is being considered, as Binny's Beverage Depot is interested in moving into the site. A community meeting has been scheduled by 3rd Ward Alderman Melissa Wynne for next week to discuss the plans.

Brad and Soter, it's pretty clear from the article in Patch as well as one in Evanston Now, that Binnys is interested in the site so I'm unclear why you would question their interest. The only strings attached seem to be possible objections from the neighbors. There's no way I would drive to Lincolnwood to buy a few bottles of wine or beer, but a Binny's a mile north of me would be great.

Sandy, yes a CTA bus, #205, runs south on Chicago Ave. from Church St. to the Howard terminal and north from the terminal to Davis.

Since Mr. Binstein himself turned up for Ald. Wynne's community meeting on Wednesday night, I think it safe to say that Binny's is seriously interested in this site. No surprise, the local liquor dealers, including Vinic, object to the competition.

As you may know, the City Council last Wednesday voted 48-1 to authorize the acquisition of 30 acres of vacant land in the City’s West Garfield park neighborhood to construct a training facility for police officers, fire fighters and paramedics. Mayor Emanuel sponsored the measure and because it involved a real estate transaction, it came before the City Council Committee on Housing and Real Estate, which I chair.

Allow me to explain why I was one of the 48 alderman to support the proposal. Simply put, the new academy is a necessary step in the long road to reforming our broken Police Department.

The proposed public safety training academy is in direct response to the U.S. Justice Department’s call to improve police officer training procedures and facilities.

For a further explanation, please read my full statement on this important police reform issue:
